Small cascade

Some time ago I started building a small cascade with two NL11F compressors. In the first stage I use 200cm of 0.026 captube and a 4,5m long HX with 2x 3/16 in 1/2" tubing. In the second stage I use 230cm of 0.026 captube and a second HX to desuperheat the gas before it enters the main HX.

20mm thick insulation is frozen after 1 hour of running :D

First stage holds about -60° HX in and out when 2nd stage is running. I don't know why but this cascade is working better than all my previous cascades, where I used valves. I will put her under load today, lets see what it can do :D

-60 sounds tad low for capacity concerns. Looks really good though. What do you mean better? more stable or just better temperature?

Lower temperature and less problems with charging (amount of refrigerant..)

Hey thats looking great, im making a 2x 1/3hp compressors cascade too,but ill use TXV on first stage and AEV on second stage,ill make a building thru topic.
What gases did you used?

I used R404a in first and R1150 in second stage. The compressors have 1/3HP

cool cascade, what is the 2nd hx for? are you using the suction on the second to cool the 1150 also?

Try to get -115.0 *C :D

I think this desuperheating HX helps a lot interstage HX and affects on boiling temperature.

Also I think you should next time add a subcooling HX. So, a discharged gas (~60*C) would pass through
desuperheater (~45*C), next through desuperheating HX (~-40*C), through interstage HX
(~-60*C) and finally through subcooling HX (~-80*C).

Those temperatures are speculated, I wanted to show how it should +- work :)

But with greatly subcooled liquid you can do wonders :D

Didn't make a screen with exactly -115°C...
But today I put her under load. I'm very happy with it, it does -93,5°C with 180w heatload (maybe more because there's no insulation on the loadtester). The first stage holds about -45°C to -41°C (have to play with the charge a bit)
I had to add some refrigerant to both stages, in the second stage I end with a iunloaded temperature of -110°C. I think this is very good for such small compressors.
I hope I can test my new P4 670 with the cascade soon. LN2 is here too :D

No need for larger compressors. it is just amazing how good results you can see when using the SLHX before tha main HX...enven tough it is unlogical but still it works :=)

That is one badass lil' cascade man, -90C with 180W load is amazing!!:eek:

A rock stable first stage is the base for a good second stage. So maybe a bigger compressor (maybe SC15) in the first stage would lead to some better temps. But I think -44° on the HX with load is not bad at all.

What are you smoking? Doubt even 670 @ 7ghz will pull out even 200W (real wattage not some guestimates) You would have fried your CPU or mobo components well before 400W, believe me.

Getting over 200w with any single core is damn near imossible.
