I'm really curious about the results that people get with the XP-120 on A64s (especially on Winchesters).
So here are mine :
XP-120 + Papst 120mm @ 1600RPM
A64 @ 2200 @ 1.45v
IDLE : 35-36C
LOAD (with S&M 1.6.0) : 51.5C
My temperatures are too high in my opinion and I wwould like to know what other guys are obtaining. BTW : the ambient temp. was ~24C when I've made the tests.
some things you can try,
first IMO you have the fan blowing down into the xp120 like most hs's, try reversing it so it sucks up through the hs. Made a 3c improvement with mine at load and also improved mb temps. I think it sorta depends on the airflow around your case as to weather you see an improvemnt.
second, what is the cfm rating of the Papst @ 1600rpm ? you might want to consider a higher cfm fan.
Also your cpu temp is very dependent of airflow through the case so adding an additional exaust fan will help alot.

*edit* ahh K see from your sig, its 3200 - hmm well in that case they are not great, but still acceptable for 24/7 use shirley?
try putting a blank 120mm shroud inbetween the fan and the sink to reduce the deadspace of the fan
I have 1 x 80mm @ 1500 RPM in front of the case, 1 x 80mm @ 2000 RPM that takes out air (just near the CPU) and another 92mm @ 1600 RPM that takes out air (this one is above the PSU).Quote:

Not really sure about the CFM of the front intake 80mm.

It sounds like you have good air flow through the case, and your 120mm fan has plenty of cfm.
reverse it and give that a try, also I know its a PITA but you may also want to try reaplying the tim and see what happens. BTW what are you using as TIM ?
No improvements with the reversed fan. In fact I got higher temps (about 1.0-1.5C). I am using Arctic Silver 5 and I have spread it in a very thin layer with a credit card. I applied it ~1 month ago so it should be at the max "performance" by now (burned it for 5 days after I applied it). If I keep my case open I get 50C at load, so an 1.5C improvement, but that kind of proves that the airflow in my case is pretty good. There could be another explanation : the A8V sensor. I'm really not sure how reliable it is and I have no other way of finding out the CPU temperature :(.
Man sorry, I didn't even think aobut looking at your sig ! ya my A8V reads higher than either the MSI or the DFI too, I'd say if your OC is stable don't worry about it ! lol
is the 120 better than 90?
Wasn't really worried about stability :D .. It passed days of PRIME95, Memtest & 3dmark2001 :D ... but I was kind of pis**d off because a friends XP90 + Enermax 90mm @ 2500RPM gives him better temperatures at 2400 @ 1.45v :D (with a DFI nF4). And his airflow isn't as good as mines either :) ...
By how much is the a8v off when compared to the MSI Neo2 or the DFI ?
temp sensors are horrible on all the boards.
My winchester @ 2600mhz 1.60v reads as 66c load S&M with a Zalman CNPS7700-cu on it, but if I put a temperature probe on the IHS it is 36c or less.
3000+ Newcastle @2.3........24/7 full load 52-56......app 1.6v.
DFI UT....230 x 10.
1 X 120mm intake/1 x 120 mm exhaust.

Typically doesn't Asus read temperatures on the low side? Back on topic I have a A64 Winchester 3000+ @ 2.4 with a XP-120 and 120CFM fan. Here is a picture of the load, according to uGuru, which I suspect is wrong. In the picture you can see my CPU/System/PSU temps up top, my core voltage and my CPU fan RPM.

To get an idea of what your case flows like what are your temps on your video card at idle?

Well according to my DFI I get about 30°C during normal browsing etc, goes up to maybe 40 during load.
This is a 3000+ winchester at 1.45v at 275x8. :)
I have the same question, I'm idling (open case) at 37-38C @ ~2800mhz w/ 1.7v vcore and 51-53C load temps w/ the XP-90C using 92 x 38 Delta 3blade (~80cfm) the wierd thing is when I mount the 92mm tornado it only improves the temps by 1C... ?? I have the IHS removed and lowered the xp-90c using a spacer between the clips and the xp-90c mounts... (had to use a longer bolt)
Anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve the air cooled temps?
Winchester 3000+ @ 9x300 (2700mhz) 1.69v on Zalman 7700cu nets me 49.1c according to software/bios measurements... lol.
100mhz less and .1v less gave me 66c before.. this is really quite funny.
Guys: Stop trusting your probes. Go out and buy a DMM with temp sensor built in then measure as near the CPU core as you can. Sure its not going to be perfect, but it will be a heck of a lot better than what the bios/software is reporting.
Well I made some changes and got my load temps down to 47C vs. the 51-53C I was getting before...
I first tried using another fan casing between the fan and the XP90C and didn't improve anything...
Second removed the clips that come with the XP-90C and made some small brackets that would bolt in the place of them and used the mounting hardware used for the Swiftech 6400V, and increased the contact pressure.. (By the way a much better mounting system)
So, if you can increase your contact pressure on the XP-90C, 90, or 120 it will improve your load temps anyway.....( note, I have also removed my IHS before this, and had to mod the original clip mounting system to maintain the orginal pressure)

Here is some pic's of the mounting mech. I'm using on the XP-90C... I was using the mounting hardware from the Swiftech 6400V, but I ended up changing the backplate, bolts, springs, etc.. from the SLK-948.
As you can see I used the little tabs off the 6400V heatsink, and just modified them a little. You could used just about any metal tabs as long as they wouldn't bend....
If you are going to remove the IHS, then some kind of similar mounting hardware would benefitial.....
XP-120 w/ a Low speed "12L" Panaflo.
Ambient temps are 23*c.
3200+ winnie @ 2600mhz, 1.6v sitting at a solid 47-48*c load (prime95) according to my motherboard which seems to be pretty random as far as temps go.
Base of the XP-120 and heatpipes feel warm, maybe 40-45*c.
To use XP-120 without IHS just unscrew the 2 screws holding the clambs a bit.
Then you dont have to wiggle it so much.
Also an ATI9800 shim has good size to use on cpu.

That was one of the things that was holding me from removing the IHS.
With specs in my sig
100% idle : 26c
100% load : 43c
Removed the XP-90C and lapped it w/ 2000grit and remounted and have come out with 33-34C idle, and 43-44C prime small fft's load temp.... :slapass:
Running ~2805mhz 11*255mhz w/ a 4000 Claw..
Something I learned when lapping a heatsink is to use a piece of glass and wrap the sand paper around it to provide a flat surface. I constantly run water over the sandpaper, and start around 600grit and work my way up 200grit at a time. Takes alot of time, but it always improves the temps... I would use polish,but I would think that would make the surface uneven...
I am using stock HSF. OC my winnie to 2250Mhz @ 1.52vcore.
I run Prime 95 for 30 minutes on Small fft
Idle: 30 degree C
Load: 42 degree C
I have 2 80mm fan at the rear of my case and one 80mm on top of the casing.
At this rate, I don't think I need aftermarket HSF.
