I bought a AMD A64 -3200 to use to test mountings on my cascades. Well it didn't like the cold. I booted to desktop before the evaporator got sub-zero and all was well. When my processor got below zero I got a blue warning screen.
Does the 3500 do better with sub-zero? Do any of the A64 939s do well in the cold? I would like to take this 3200 and trade it in for something that will work. I'm planning on a fx55, so I don't want to spend awhole lot more money. ;)

is your 3200 a 939?
if it is, chances are you just got a winchester, and well... theres just not much you can do about it, they just don't like the cold all that much usually.
you can either look for a newcastle 939, a 754 CPU, or a FX... oh yeah, or a 4000.
those are about the only CPU's that work without much hassle for sub zero.
winnies of weeks above a certain point dont have the cold bug:

The processor I have is a socket 939 - 3200. Do the 3500 or 3800 (socket 939) do okay with the extreme cold? That's as much money as I want to spend.
The 3800+ should be fine, the 3500+ should be ok IF it is 130nm Newcastle core, not 90nm Winchester :)Quote:

GeForce ti4200 - Jason5757 has been telling me about the 90nm 55s. Do you have any more specific information about them and on the market dates? :D

in green font, it says fx55 san diago and the month of March. I also see resellers say they are expecting new shipments either the end of feb or beggining of March so this is 2 weeks from now :D However be prepared to pony serious cash, could cost $999 :eek: theres also a 4000+ that may be much more tolerable to your budget. You could always just stick with your 3500+ newcastle if you dont mind an air cooled fx55 being faster than your chilled 3500+ castle
I traded the 3200 in on a 3800 :p: LMAO. The NewCastle works fine with sub-zero,but OMG, it is a terrible overclocker. :( Maybe I'll take it back and exchange it for a FX53 when I get my allowance next week. :D
My 3200+ winnie does great on an old Mach I, and a really junky refurb neo2. 3ghz is rock stable, and I am expecting more wehn it goes in the dfi nf4 this week. I don't think the bug is in the chips. I think it is in the boards. It took some effort to beat the bug on this neo and the previous one (that I killed) but it has been kosher since, and my temps are -15c idle and -5c load on-die via probe. dont pay much attention to pi socre, this board only lets me do ddr400 :confused:

I have tried two Winchesters and both wouldn't go with a LightSpeed on a MSI Neo2.

The 3800 castles won't clock for nothin. As a matter of fact it won't even boot past Windows logo now. I think I froze it. :brick: It will post to the logo but reboots righ before going to desktop. I took the cascade off and put the stock fan on it and it still does the same. I'll let it sit over night and try it again tomorrow. Its not all about a mobo issue.
When i tested the neo2 + winnie 3000 with various bioses none of them changed the situation with the cold bug. stock, modded etc. none of them changed anything but overclockability.
All of them hanged when i entered the temp monitors in bios showing 40C or sometimes 255C (im not 100% sure on this but it was a large number). In windows hardware monitoring the temp was a constant 40C. Once the temps go below 0C, pah 40C on the monitor.

I got the Neo2 0411 (November) batch because I read somewhere that this does not have the cold bug. From the first time i booted this Neo2 it would run all CPUs I have tried without a hitch. The BIOS shows 40c all the time, but its running just fine.

I wish I had known of this earlier. I was using 1.36 and tried the dreaded 1.52 which hosed my motherboard. I've returned the board and cpu. I'm in the market for replacements.
I wonder if reflashing 1.5x a couple times would do the same thing. And I wonder what it's doing.
It would be great if someone else could confirm.
You're the first person I have run into who had the problem, flashed to 1.5x and fixed it. Everyone else either can't get it to work, or can't get the problem :D.

okay, no one's experence is all that surprising to me, and I am still not convinced it is not jsut a mobo issue. first I can not speak to any experience apart from Neo2, so if you runsomething else, my advice doesn't apply.
I can't go into the bios hardware monitor page either, at least for more than a second, in and out, otherwise it goes to 255c and hangs. this has not changed.
before you say it does not work, attempt the triple flash method.
and RUNMC, man, sweet problem to have! you got a cascade? you seem to be running into an alltogether different problem - your winnie being too cold. evaps that cold have caused many problems for people with winnies that have had them run fine at subzero. unlike NC's and CH's winnies do have problems at that temp, and I think there is nothing that can be done about that thusfar.
people are making the switch to DFI en masse right now, mostly from neo around here - advise to check with some of those people and see what they are experiencing with frozen winnies. I myself will be able to tell you by this time next week.
don't give up, my friends. I was ready to toss this combo in the dumpster (figuratively) but very glad I did not.
It's very cool that you beat the bug!! :cool: Although I did trade my 3200 winnie in on the 3800 Castles, I did notice ZipZoomFly is running the 3200 at a decent price. I might just pick up one and see if I can beat the bug using you tripple flash method. The winnie is a really nice cheap overclocker. Kinda like the 1.6a Intel chip from a few years backQuote:
