AMD Readies Radeon HD 5830, Seals Upper-Mainstream Gaps (tpu+nordic)

Having reclaimed the positions of having the fastest graphics cards and the most powerful GPU with the DirectX 11 compliant Radeon HD 5000 series, AMD is looking to make DirectX 11 accessible to all market segments. Later this month, AMD is expected to announce its lower-mainstream Radeon HD 5600 products, but with it, also an addition to the Radeon HD 5800 series: the Radeon HD 5830. This product is expected to fill the gap between Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5850.

The Radeon HD 5770 is priced in the sub-$200 range, while the HD 5850 at around $300. This gap is currently held by the previous-generation Radeon HD 4890, which faces competition from some NVIDIA GeForce GTX 200 series products. It is expected that the Radeon HD 5830 will be about as powerful as a Radeon HD 4890 in current applications, while being priced slightly lower, and a little more competitive owing to its feature set and future-proofing. The new product could be announced on the 25th Jan. No additional details or specifications are known at this point.

I was a doubter that this would happen, but then again I bought my HD5850 for $250 soon after release prior to the price jumping up.

Wait, it will perform the same as the 4890, but at a slightly lower price point? That doesnt make any sense. The 5770 performs kinda close to the 4890 spec wise, the only difference is the 128-bit mem bus vs 256-bit. The 5770 is about $170 and the 4890 is $199. How can this fit within that $29 price range? This really should perform better than the 4890 by a little bit and be around the $225 area if they want to fit it some place in between the current gen

I'm expecting this to be around $200 with around 1200 or so shaders and 700/1000ish clocks? Can't really compare the HD 4890 prices since it's older generation and this should beat it fairly solidly. If it was at $200, AMD would have a $600 (I realize the 5970 is realistically at $650-700, but I'm talking MSRP), $400, $300, $200, $170, and $140 card for the 5000 series. Seems reasonable.

Most 4890 cards were around 220$-230$ for a good one. So I bet it will be closer in that respect than 200$. So maybe 210$-220$ range im guessin. Now I got to choose 5850 or 5830 for my soon to be purchase:shrug:

If it is cypress I assume some rops and tmus will get disabled, shader count? but I cant really see it being much more than 800, 1120 tops?

Man, HD5770 is slower than HD4870 1GB in most games, so performing the same as HD4890 is nice :up:

Speculation time!

Some of the stuff above doesn't make that much sense though.

i - Rather than being 15-20% faster than the GTX285 (5850) or 10-15% slower than it (4890), this could fit in the middle. Aka faster than 4890 too.

ii - MSRP is $200++. 5770 goes down to 140-160. 5750 goes down to 120. ATI would rather make it faster and earn more money per GPU sold snce this is not a mass market castration.

iii - Depending on Cypress yields, they'd either cut more SPs from 1440 or reduce clocks even more. I'd expect TDP in the 130W range.

iv - (hopeful) 1 6-pin connector. Would be perfect for those with puny PSUs upgrading from their GTS250s.

Most likely these are sub par 5850 cores that didn't make the cut.

I doubt it. That wouldn't really match up with anything, since that'd be = to 4890 performance, which isn't far ahead of the 5770.

Here is my take the card will have one less cluster then 5850,1280 Sp's yields might be bad now ,but they can only get better and it wouldn't make any sense to cut off more then they have to .But it should be clocked at about 650 mhz which is where the whole around 4890 performance comes from,does that sound right ? 4830 did not have a reference card as far as i can remember ,long story short it is very unlikely it will be Vcore softmoddable .

It's Cypress, but I can imagine it won't be as limited in hardware department as the 5770, which means overclocking will result in greater boosts ;)

I applaud this development. Hopefully we can see some nice low power DX11 budget cards soon as well. Not many people play games, and some go for ultra low power cards with great video processing engines.

You know what? ATi has got one of the most confusing, annoying product names in history. If you are actually looking to purchase anything but the high end, I've found myself really scratching my head. Especiallly in trying to remember the names. Yes, it does make sense if you think about it, but it's like numeric dyslexia, it all looks the same to me.

You can say a lot about nVidia with all the renaming, but I do like the GTxxx naming scheme.

I actually like AMDs naming strategy more, it looks less confusing to me. Namely, the naming strat for the 4XXX series was spot on (and only got slightly confusing at the end, when AMD tried to offload cores stockpiled via region dependent products). As for the 5XXX naming, it looks good for me atm.

Just omit an "0" at the end and these "HD" cards are pretty much the same as NVIDIA's naming.
eg:
HD597 (0) - supreme
HD587 (0) - extreme
HD585 (0) - strong
...
HD575 (0) - lightweight

It will probably be lasercut, since the 4830s were not able to unlock the extra shaders. I'm just hoping they use the reference 5850 pcb so we can have some vcore softmod fun :p:

Hope they'll keep decent cooling and decent memory speed.
Also I suppose it'll support double precision floating point which is a nice difference from 57xx.

i hope its an "unfit" 5850 core... my last ati card was a sapphire x800GTO2 that i unlocked to X850 and clocked up to x850XTPE speeds... it'd be awesome if they released some more "limited edition" cards like that...

That takes me back, Roadcone. I once bought an X800 Pro AGP that was notorious for being a perfectly good XTPE core. Sure enough, a BIOS flash later and the card booted and worked just fine for the rest of its days as a Radeon X800XTPE. I was unsure of what to call it when listing specs since I bought it as an 800 Pro but in every sense it was an XTPE. :)
