I am hoping to get a HD5870x2 with a nickel plated EK block to replace my HD4870x2 that has a DD block on it.
Nickel plated blocks are so much prettier than exposed copper blocks which are susceptible to tarnishing and oxidation.
it's always a race to come out with a waterblock first the a new GPU, but i think they have to wait for it to launch to get dimensions. there's never a case where the block comes out the same day the card launches.
Come on Eddy any word on the 5870 EK blocks yet?

are the mounting holes for gpu only blocks the same as older generations?
I'm more interested on the GPU only block and unisink support. Gabe, are you planning uni-sinks for these new cards?
I don't know about "the same", but [H]ocp had some pictures yesterday of the GPU area. And most GPU only blocks have enough flexibility in their mounting to make any variance a non-issue.Quote:

Performance between full cover and gpu + heatsink are equal, but, the second one, at last have one part that you can reuse.
With full cover you simply cant . . . perhaps they look better, but now that vgas last only half an year, they dont look like a "better looking" option to me :shrug:

$30-40 is a lot easier to stomach then $100-200
Another thing to consider dean.. or gabe.. or anyone whose on the ball with unisinks... ASUS has announced their TOP version of the 5870 (and 5850 later I assume) which will allow software voltage tweaks.. now this might mean non-reference PCB which puts the full-block option a pain for both you and the consumer, but a uni-sink is a lot better approach. Not to mention, it allows adding a fan onto the vrm area for additional cooling if needed...
correct me if I'm wrong, but no full-cover gpu that I've seen yet has flow over the VRM's
My advice to you guys
for your best chance at not getting a block that wont fit your card.
