which corsair PSU to power my i7?

As it seems I'm going to build a i7 rig:up:, and was thinking about which PSU to use..

It will power my system about 3 hdds and my water cooling with fans.. but the pump is about 10W and I guess the fans combined are about 10 aswell the i7 will be over clocked

I'm going to use a Ati 3870 in the beginning but probably gonna get me a Nvidia gtx285 or similar.. whenever I feel the need to get my gaming on again :)

I can choose between the HX520 and a little bit newer TX650?

or should I sell the HX520 and get another one? (kinda last option)

Any thoughts? :shrug:

The HX520 is modular and the TX650 is not, so that may be something to consider. The TX650 will power any single card setup you build and the HX520 probably would too, but for peace of mind/insurance i would go with the TX650. I really prefer modular PSU's for ease of installation though, so i would see if you can get the HX620. Not sure if that is an option at all.

yea.. well it wasn't an option but now I got one :) Hx620 it is!

I would think the HX620 would handle it. However Corsair's own "Power Supply Finder" seemed to be tossing the HX520 at a lot of systems I would have thought were a bit much.

The 620 is a good PSU. I have one and it works perfectly.

Are you overclocking? If you want to push the CPU to 4+Ghz with a GTX285/295 none of those will be enough.

This is can be a 250w to 300+w processor; that is why you have people seeing 80-90°C temps in Prime95. The card is 200w+. Add the brick and brack and some degradation over time...not enough.

Also, depends on your tolerance for noise. A look at nearly all PSU reviews show that as you get near capacity, the fans speed up. What is nearly always less than 20dbA under 50% can be 35-40dbA under load.

I would be looking at an 850-1000w unit for that setup. The Corsair 1000w is really a 1300w, but rated at 1000w to keep it in a high efficiency range. Frequent rebates at NewEgg keep the price around $200-250.

You don't know what your talking about as your estimation is WAY overkill, the hx620 is perfectly fine as is the tx 650. this user has no reason to buy a 750w PSU much less a 1000w lol.

Get it, and never have to worry about PSUs ever again.

Especially with the way GPUs are headed, you don't want to be hovering at 90% Load often.

Spend the money now to get a good PSU. It's the foundation of your whole computer. You can upgrade everything else down the road, and it WILL Require more power. Fyi

i7 965 stnd. voltage @3.85Ghz //max so far at 4.2
6gb ram
DFI jr.
a 320gb samsung
and two 7200.12 500Gb
2x4830

about 4 fans, and a aquastream xt usb, (heatkiller 3.0 is nice!!)

now as far as i notice this setup runs fine.. i might try to use 2x4870 in the enar future

Sounds like a nice system! I was tempted to build on that DFI, but I ordered my P6T before it came out. What case you sticking the JR in?

Get a Corsair HX1000 and be done with it, its got a 5 year warranty, chances are in the next 5 years you will be upgrading again and need the extra power it offers, my Corsair HX620 went pop recently (as a lot of them seem to do) but I can tell you the HX1000 is a completely different animal than the 620, the 620 would make odd crackling noises if I chose to switch the PSU off after usage... not good, the 1000 is fine when I do this.

Ultimately the 620 died on me, but fortunately never took out anything with it.

Sad part is, I've got an Antec 900 case, so PSU's have to be built with the open fan grill facing upwards and at the bottom of the case, on the very first day of building this rig and while fitting a graphic card, I dropped a screw and it fell into the PSU :( So out with the PSU to try to retrieve the screw, upside down, it would not fall out, shake it a bit, still nothing, so I had to unscrew the fan grill and pull out the screw with tweezers ... dodgy, lots of high voltage I know ( DON'T DO THIS AT HOME FOLKS) but as a result I had to destroy the "warranty void if removed sticker" so even though the PSU went pop within one year after the build I cant get it sorted :rolleyes:

I live and learn.

Moral of the story is ... if you have a case with a PSU at the bottom and its fan grill has to face upwards, cover the fan grill with something until the build is complete.

i use 450VX's in all my Core 2 Duo/Quad systems, single vga. i have two systems powered by 620HX's. 620HX is solid and all you need.

every brand, every model of every product will have bad ones.

Most people overestimate their PSU requirements, which is why 1000 watt PSU's are selling at all. I have a relatively power hungry system running on a 40 dollar Enhance (seasonsic built) 350 watt PSU. I will have to upgrade to the HX620 (futureproofing) due to my soon to by GTX260 upgrade, but had it not been for that, 350 would be fine.

In some reviews they measure the total power consumption and it always surprises me. A system with the following specs only pulls 687.6 from the wall, and with 82.6% effeincy that means the PSU is supplying 567.6 watts to the System. That means that a Corsair 620HX is more than enough PSU for this incredibly powerful system. Most people on XS would say the system listed below would need 750watt+ PSU to handle it. The truth of the matter is that is absolute BS. I imagine that this misinformation is propegated largely in part from the PSU manufactures, so that they can sell more powerful (read more expensive) power supplies.

A 620HX is more than adequate. In fact this thread is the -first- time I've heard anyone having trouble with them, generally reviewers and users love them do to their robustness and the fact that they are underrated at 620W.

With the system in my signature, I've yet to see the PSU fan increase speed from it's default 'slow as freaking hell' speed, or the air coming out of it get more than 'slightly warmer than room temp'.

get the 620hx,nice modular psu,it has been tested on 2x2900xt+q6600@4ghz no problem for it.
i will soon get similar pc with 620hx psu

my god, that had to pull alot of power. Those 2900XT's are like black holes when it comes to power consumption.

i use hx620 in my new i7 system and cant report anything quirky.
I did buy a VX550 and it came with a faulty fan. The motor was audible. But our local dealer tested it in front of me and gave me a new unit immediately. Great service!
