AMD Shanghai is officially out

AMD today announced widespread availability of its 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, delivering up to 35 percent more performance with up to a 35 percent decrease in power consumption at idle. With IT decision-makers looking to do more with less, the newest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor can help drive data center efficiencies and reduce complexities with innovations that offer superior virtualization performance and increased performance-per-watt. Global OEMs are expected to immediately offer enterprise and SMB customers more than 25 systems, available between launch today and the end of the year, based on the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, codenamed “Shanghai.”

Powerconsumption looks very nice. And the increased L3 cache helps the scaling. But performance looks more or less onpair with 65nm in IPC.

I wouldn't hold my breath too much about Deneb. I don't think desktop performance is gonna be too good.

If the IPC has had no improvement (other than the cache), then it's a bit of a damp squib for us gamers.

Poor ipc gains, Great job on power which will mean a lot for the intended market, Does not look good for deneb though.

It was like that since the begining and nothing has changed.
I know that some websites state for November/December but afaik thats not true.

Thats due to cache. And not that much faster after you remove the extra clock. Plus remember this is FBDIMMs. Not Regular.

Deneb is january 8th (Atleast embargo) on the last AMD slide.

It's better than a 23% gain even after you remove the clock gains. That is huge. Also saying "it's just the cache" is pretty silly. Caches can make a massive difference. Intel proved that.

Well but Deneb will be AM2+ + AM3, so if you have AM2+ mobo now, you can buy Deneb and then just change mobo for AM3.
And AM3 will be released much later.
And yes, this Cinebench test is quite interesting.
17% higher clock and 44% higher score.

I'm sure there are some other tweaks but nothing to write home about. We already knew Barcelona was a decent server chip, just low clocks.

Looks like Shangai will keep AMD in the race for a while, especially when it ramps to the 3ghz mark.

I still think for a desktop they will have to have low low prices to compete with intel. I'm sure a 3.0ghz deneb will be a nice chip for the price it will come out at (ie low). Personally I don't care about OCing any more, I just prefer a chip that runs fine at a price point (watts/performance means nothing to me in a home environment).

That road map is a bit weird. Shows it out in December but embargoed to Jan????

If that means they are releasing late Dec before Christmas, they are afraid of the reviews it would give!

I wouldnt count on it. There are 2 SKUs for Deneb. One AM2+ and one AM3. Hopefully there is another reason for it.

Ah yes you're right. It will be possible to put AM3 SKU into AM2+ mobo, but not AM2+ SKU into AM3. Sorry for confusion ;)
