more serious HDD tester: post IOmeter results

It will take a few minutes to set this benchmark up but IOmeter is a much better way to test a hard drive performance than Hdtach etc... Post also what setup you have

Here is a quick guide how to set it up:

1. Download IOmeter

2. You can try opening iometer.icf file (see attachement) or set it up manually
Set target and disk size (8GB)

3. Create a new test

Access specification will look like this:

4. Last parameters

Then simply click start tests (green flag). Run time will be 5min*4=20minutes

It will save results in CSV file. Next you want to open the file in Excel and format to something like this (raptor 150GB raid0):

That's really interesting. For small queue depth raid 5 is not good but for higher depth it gets better. Probably with more disks and higher depth it will be even better. That's why raid 5 is typically for servers and server applications :)

the results are a little more useful than simple HD tach results imo

This is a older server with two independent arrays

newer c2q based server but with slow disks ORZ

Excepting the OP's I-RAM tests (which I can't really explain unless the 1GB size makes any difference), the ACARD ANS9010 in RAID-0 with itself on a PERC 6/i appear to pretty well dominate at this test:

Ram drive is 14GB. Soon to be 26GB when I go to 32GB system RAM next week.

Everything is instantaneous.
