Really doesnt offer much difference nnstep. I bet that a x1900GTX gets released at 512mb to spite nvidia.

Hopefully the extra quad will be unlocked easily.

I can tell you right now that Difference of 256Mb of Ram does make one heck of a difference in the EyeCandy and FPS in Large Screens :fact:
Plus the GPU folds alot better the more Graphics Ram you have..

Well, ATI had to dump their defective cores some day. Through a performance perspective, 7900GT can always be OC'd to 7900GTX since it's fully unlocked by default. We don't know if X1900GT is yet, so 7900GT may be the better pick. On the other hand HDR+AA is a nice feature, as is H.264 decoding. Let's hope this tightens the competition and fine SKUs at fine prices is the result. :)

Yup, ATI benefits especially from the extra memory. This will definitely hurt performance, but how much is hard to tell from case-to-case bases.

Here is one article showing some differences between 7800GT 256 and 512. There are lots more out there, just to tired to find them. Remember, the better the GPU the more the bottleneck 256MB will show. And again performance hit on ATI parts when frame buffer is exceeded is worse than on Nvidia.

In the past the GT version of ATI cards were not meant to compete with the GT versions of Nvidia cards. I'm sure the X1900 XL will be the direct comptetition for the 7900 GT just as the X1800 XL was the competition for the 7800 GT, X800 XL, 6800 GT, and so on...

The GT ATI cards are there to compete with the 7600 series, just as the X800 GT competes with Nvidias 6600 series.

Let's not forget the 7900GT only has 256MB as well

At the same time the 7900 is not remotely as Memory sensitive as the X1800. :fact:
Compare the difference between a 7900GTX and a 7900GT at the same speed.. it is reasonably close..
Do the same for the X1800XT (512) and the X1800XL at the same speed.. and it isn't even funny how different it is...

It doesn't matter. The X1900GT should still perform better than the 7900GT.

I've come to the conclusion that those scores are bugged. In most of those situations, the graphics card doesn't even use up the 256MB of RAM.


EDIT2: This is very strange. VideoMemWatcher states that most games don't use more than 256MB (optimized for 256MB), especially when run at only 1280x1024. Why would it make a difference then?

Here you can see the amount of video and system RAM different games allocate. Most games seem to always allocate some system RAM, even though video RAM isn't full. But at 1600 and 1920 resolutions, 256MB quickly becomes very small, especially if you add some AA and AF to the mix in addition to HDR. And just like nn_step said, ATI is much more sensitive to cache trashing (or whatever running out of buffer memory is called) than nVidia. Why is anyone's guess and has caused lots of speculation.

I personally think it's really clever, the specs.

A 12rop/36ps 256mb part with 1.4ns (1400mhz) ram.

Even if ATi didn't go full-out to keep them from unlocking, and just flashed a different bios disabling the quad, there is no product that this could flash to. There is no 256mb x1900 part (other than the AIW, which I doubt would work) and besides the XT's use faster stock-clocked ram via the bios then the 1.4ns chips can most likely handle, especially with the stock hsf. I don't know the gpu/vmem voltage on the GT vs XT's and if the differance would allow for that speed bump over what they're rated for, but I doubt it.

If this can be flashed, it will be to the x1900xl, which will come much later, probably around (if not later) than the time we see the Rv570 x1900gto which will replace the gt and most likely be cheaper than the GT because of it's cheaper production costs, but with the same specs.

Why would they do this? Obviously Rv570 will not take the bios flashes since it's a different core, and stopping something retroactive like gt->xl at that point will not be as big of a deal, as people at that point will be buying rv570 cores that cannot be flashed to the newly released XL.

That's my guess anyway, and that's why I think the product is clever. I doubt many are made, as it's obviously a stop-gap until rv570 which will do the same thing, but be smaller/cheaper (even at 90nm) since it was made to be 12/36.

does it matter that it if unlocked it won't match a product? i have an x800gto unlocked to 16 pipes by simply changing the quad lock in the bios using hexeditor and rabit, and it still recognizes it as an x800gto... would that not work the same with the x1900gt?(well, like the x800gto's, im sure not all can be unlocked, but assuming some could..)

That'll probably change by release day, but for now, they're wanting an insane $400 for this card... $30 more and you have a x1900xt.

That looks really good. They should have included some benchmarks from Oblivion and NFSMW.

Also, I saw it had 1.4ns from the pics, and its only running at 595MHz. Last time I played with BJ14 it went to 693MHz on super tight timings and 800MHz relaxed. So there is a lot of room for that here.

It's replacing pretty much the x1800xl/xt products, which are outdated, and it will be replaced itsself by it's doppleganger the rv570 ASAP, to fight the 7900gt. Kinda the same thing appears to happening with rv560 replacing the x1600/x1800gto series to go against the 7600gt. All should be good parts in their price-range, at least by looking at specs...

I imagine when overclocked it'll be slightly faster than a X1800XT. The 1.4ns memory is indeed a nice middle-ground as well, I likey, 600+/1400+ should be good, even at 12/36. It should indeed be worth it's $300, as that is the going rate of an x1800xt and this should end up faster when overclocked on decent cooling me thinks. They are pitting it to the 7900gt afterall, and from the looks of it, the 19GT scores similar to a x1800xt at stock from the comparisons i've seen on the x1800xtvs7900gt.

Pipes and overclocks are the questions indeed to answer if it's another deal worthy of the standards of the 9500pro/GTO2 or not, but regardless, it looks like the GT/GTO will be good cards.

Judging by the statements in the article though...If an X1900XL ever sees the light of day after rv570 is released, that will be an EXCELLENT card, basically a 256mb 1900XT in disguise. Too bad they didn't release it now, if indeed the GT's are all cores that have a broken quad. :(

We might get lucky because I've heard that they have such good yields with the R580 cores that many of the GTs will just be bios locked which leave someone who's handy with a hex editior to fix that up and we get a 16/48 card for cheap.

Even the x1800XL score is low, so it seems pretty even. When I had the x1800XL it did between 7400-7500 in 05 easy. Stock.

Those 3DMark2001 scores look really low. The way they setup the bar graphs is bad statistics and misleading. They used a P4 to bench the cards as well.

$379 :eek: you can get a 7900gt for $289 at newegg now. hopefully prices drop when more stores start stocking it.

Prices are high right now because only a few shops are willing to sell it before the release date. Others seem to be slow on egtting them up so supply is low right now. It'll probably go down in a few days.

Best Buy has them in stock in my area for $299.

Also X1800XTs are in at $299 aand I'm pretty sure they can do 9k with minimal effort if the rest of you system isn't letting you down (like my PSU and RAM)

The Inq does a benchmarking run with both cards. Though I still havent swallowed by whole pack of salt yet (its a tad bitter this time), the the 7900GT comes out the winner.

Looks like the slower mem bandwith affects performance by quite a bit, but not as much as the inq likes to shout about. It claims that the 7900 GT is up to 25 fps faster...yes it is, if you like playing at 2048x1536 with no AA or AF...typical stupidity at the hands of Fuad the salad tosser.

As a side note, I would like to see performance comparo of the X1800GTO vs X1800XT 256MB vs X1900GT. I have a feeling the 256MB X1800XT (with the best cooler of the bunch) will be better bang for the buck.

Card should be solid, my XTX is from powercolor and has ran great from day 1, doesn't oc half bad either.

It would have been nice if he included what video card driver settings were used. If that 7900GT was kept at Quality filtering then they don't really mean a whole lot.

What he means is that nVidia excels in OpenGL

it shouldn't really be surprising that when you lose 25% of the pipelines that performance would suffer

the X1000 series may not have alot of pipelines, but it sure needs what it can get. that's what it seems at least.

how is this different from an X1600? other than the 36 shaders, and the 256bit memory bandwidth

Like usual, ATI has problems to compete in mid/low budget section, while in highend section that's another story. But until I see more benchmarks I won't make any rush decisions of this X1900GT vs 7900GT battle. Unlocking pipes would definitely give a nice performance boost for X1900GT if it's possible. But every1 knows how much these 7900GTs overclock after a simple voltmod even on decent aircooling...

Once again you see at high res & quality, the ATI card starves with only 256MB memory. The games used were slightly in Nvidia favor (Q4,D3,SS2), but BF2 and FEAR for example it was still behind and in HL2 X1900GT only won in low quality test. Still I think only Doom 3 or Quake 4 should be used and not both in a test like this.

What's the price range for X1900GT? I say this because if you can unlock the shaders, you can get a vf900 and you're (almost) done. You still lack the 256mb...

I have a hunch that you can flash to X1900AIW... the AIW part would just be undetected and there may be errors at boot, but it should work.

The main problem with X1900 GT is that even in idle it reaches 63C deg. :(
Could it be just a coolers fault?

The last comment in the review really makes the Inq look dumber then usual. ATI needs more pipelines? Clearly they don't seem to remember that the x1900gt has half the pipelines of the 7900gt and really is about the same perfromance at standard resolutions. What Id like to see is a standard review which also shows temperatures during each test, and acheivable clocks on stock heatsink.
Lets not forget x1900 has soft-vadjustments!

I think it's because nVidia doesn't have any cut-down versions of the G71 yet.
If a 7900XT or 7900LE is released with 20 or 16 pipes then that might be something to compare too.

I agree with this. I think the 7900 GT is supposed to be compared to the X1900 XT (or X1800XT maybe?), and the X1900 GT to like a 7900 vanilla. (Just like X800 GT compared to 6800)

I agree with oshua and CPLB, but if you can get a 7900GT for the same money as an X1900GT......

the gto is on par with the 7600... the GT should be a little bit faster than the GTO imho but not on par with the 7900 series

They're both at the $300 mark, thus making them comparable.

Another thing is, a lot of 299$ 7900gt's come overclocked by default, so that would lead to even more of a beating for the X1900GT, tbh.

I think pprices will drop pretty quick (they always do) so that isn't a valid argument when a card is brand new. Maybe when its been out 3 weeks but not this early.

I still think the X1800XT is the best bang for buck (got one humming away quite nicely here, albeit loudly) considering how cheap they are. Hopefully they will be able to work out mastercardless xfire for the X1800 and then I'll be rocking. :D

Oh yeah, and now you can get them so cheap (£170) it really is a bargain.

The thing is, what place does the X1900GT have in the market? I dunno how much it goes for in the UK, but i'll hazard a guess at £230 to compete with the 7900gt. Yet, already, one of Ati's products beats the 7900gt, and can be got for £60 cheaper.
So why would one want an x1900gt? Beats me.

We've just discussed the texture unit layout with a couple of journalists on Beyond3D's forums, and found that what we were told wasn't quite the whole story. While the texture units are decoupled from the shader units (there are three shader units enabled on Radeon X1900GT), they are still configured in blocks of four texture units per shader unit.

This means that the texture units are not completely separate from the pixel shader processors. With only three of the four shader units enabled on the Radeon X1900GT, the 36 pixel shader processors are only able to address 12 of the 16 texture units that are turned on. Obviously, this means that the hardware still keeps its 3:1 shader-to-texture ratio.

If you notice the pictures, the fan on the Powercolor one is slightly bigger than both the HIS and Gecube models, an indicator of which should be cooler than the others ;)

I don't believe anyone with a phase change setup would get an X1900GT over the real deal (XT or XTX).

Very true.. Lately I've been working my ass working on the XS Benchmarking OS project [link in sig] which should be completely ready by the time Quad cores come out (and at that time people will rather quickly realize that windows XP does not recongnize 4 cores.. it will be able to deal with 2Physical or 4 Virtual but not 4 physical) And with a couple boat loads of work already into it.. we have made it so that it actually runs benchmarking Programs faster and allowing [the user to] obtain better scores. Chalked with features, Tools (still being made) and Be the able to support 64 Physical or 128 Virtual cores as well as 128Gb of Ram.
If you have a spare Drive.. trying it out and letting us know of any flaws you find in it will be greatly helpful.
Or if you are really ambitious you can become an Alpha tester.. PM me if you are interested.
