Fun with 805D

So one of my roommates needed a new computer and i suggested a few parts for him. We ended up with

ASUS P5WD2
Pentium D 805
500w Rosewill PSU
my old X850XTPE Graphics card
1gb G.Skill DDR2

He assembled it yesterday and we got to clockin. Cooling is on a Scythe Ninja that i lapped.

Got to 3.8 GHz with stock volts but needed a minor voltage boost to get prime stable

With more volts it'll go past 3.9 and benches past 4 Ghz, haven't tried more than 1.45v yet, these things get toasty.

But it's good to know that a 129$ dual core can do 3.8 Ghz on aircooling with nearly stock volts.

That is a warm little bugger. Nice job. You just cant beet that CPU for the price.

Nearly 4GHz on two cores for that price sure is a damn good deal. Nice results, you plan on freezing it real quick before it goes 24/7?

What rpm/cfm was on fan(that used on SCJN-1000) ?

is that 60c with the scythe, that is hot hot hot !!!!!!!!

LOL, hard to use my phase change when it's built into my Lian Li V-2000 case and the 805-D is in my roommate's newly built computer ;)

Anyway, the poor guy has been on a 2.53 Ghz Dell with < 1gb ram and a GF4 Ti4200 for years now. With the 805D he could afford the leap to dual core, 3.8 Ghz dual core isn't too bad coming from 2.53! :toast:

The fan on the scythe was bundled with the heatsink, 120x25mm fairly low speed i think. I'm sure it would be cooler if the fan were more powerful. I did use Arctic Ceramique so i'm giving it a few days to set, i expect ~2.5c from that alone.

Nice, if i could just sell my spare S754 rig i'd get one of these in an instant.

Lap the IHS and the temps will go down. You will be able to hit 4200Mhz.

Man 4200 Mhz prime stable on air is pretty hard to do lol! THG needed watercooling and 1.67v to do 4.1 Ghz.

Which we're about to hit on air with 1.5v... ;)

Very Nice MATE! GJ! tell me.. can you check the cpu with stock cooling and see if it stable @ 3.32GHZ with normal temps? it will really get me know the cpu better.. because i wanna buy one and :P i dont have much money spending on cooling :(

You have a real nice chip there and with a little bit more voltage and better cooling 4200Mhz is possible. I have seen this chip on air at that speed. In our country this CPU is best buy and a lot of people got it, because it's cheap.

If you lap the IHS you'll see a lot better temps ... 4100@ 1,4 volts right now is 61c. I think that you will be able to run around 50 at least after good lapping.

Got one here on stock cooling @ 3.4Ghz, runs @ ~ 56c with 2 folding clients running on there ;) Although I did clean the standard intel TIM off and put some AS5 on there, its been up less than a week so I'd expect to cool down a little bit more as time goes by. Great result @ 1.4v Absolute_0, I'll push mine once I get some good cooling on there.

nice.. but you aren't in israel.. we got now 25-30C outside here :(

i plan to play with an 805 when i can get my hands on a conroe board, then upgrade to conroe.

I really don't think lapping the IHS is going to give 10c, i've lapped IHSs before and it doesn't do that much. What we need is some watercooling.

The voltage has some pretty bad vdroop. For 4.1 Ghz we set 1.50v and it droops down to 1.4v under load. We are contemplating doing the Vdroop mod but we need a VR iirc.

Its given me at least 10 degrees lapping the IHS on my 805, as it came from intel it was utter rubbish, full load temps of 60 degrees on high end water!

I'll run it by my roommate, if we actually get it down 10c and he does the Vdroop mod, then we'll have a ton of headroom :toast:

Lapped the IHS down to pure copper, no significant temp gains. Sensor on P5WD2 is crappy, reads 48c one second, 44c the next second (under load) and after a restart it says load is at 60c again.

Still guessing it helped out temps a bit, probably not 10c though. I think the Ninja could use more pressure on the CPU, especially now that the IHS has been shaved down a little. I think what it really needs is a good waterblock bolted down nice and tight.

well the temps will (theoretically) get better over the next few days as the thermal paste settles... so make sure to compare what it's getting now at full load to what it gets in 5 days time.

also, could you run some superpi 1M, if you can get 32 seconds or lower, this may be worth it for me to get a "future conroe but 805d right now" system, for some fun with OC'ing one of these things.

Yeah it'll break 32s, more ram dependent though and we've got DDR533 stuff.

The weird thing is i never saw the temp improvement from paste settling the first time, i'm not expecting it now. Temp sensor is weird, i'm used to my DFI sensor which is very consistent.

You definitly need to lap that thing...
A higher speed fan does not always help. My case has an ambient temp of 26.8C with the case fans set to low. Set to high the ambeint temp goes down to a super low 26.4C... I sometimes wish my CPU fan spun a little faster but it does not make much of a diff anyways.

Do the pencil mod. Will limit droop to 20 millivolts with a #2 pencil and 2 minutes work

can we see any superpi 1M/32M runs then? :D

The IHS was fine on mine, lapped it but made no difference.

Do the Stilts Vdroop mod on the P5WD2 it works perfectly.
I get .007v droop idle - full load at 3.9ghz

I've managed to get mine SPi 3D mark and PC mark capable at 4.2 ghz
I can't get it 100% stable above 199 FSB though

:clap: This is not a bad clock, but I have seen ever better results with this processor. Something about 4.2ghz, BOX cooling.

tell me... will the Gigabyte GA-8I945PL-G with 945PL chipset overclock well with the 805D?

805D gets too hot to do that kind of speed with stock cooling. Even if you had a chip that could do 4.2 on stock volts, the Mhz increase alone is enough to raise power consumption tremendously, and that'll overheat the stock cooler.

I'm looking up the Pencil Mod for P5WD2. Keep in mind, i'm an AMD guy, i don't know much about the Intel scene lol - i'm learnin. :D

I lapped the IHS down to solid copper, temps didn't budge even a degree. I guess we got one of the 805Ds that made good contact ;).

The comp has been running dual 100% load 24/7 for while now and it is solid as a rock at 3.8 on air. A very satisfying build.

Yeah, no telling what you'll get with a pecil mod. Don't give up on it yet. Take some measurements and try it again with solder.

It's still the roommate's setup so he'll decide, he's got a soldering iron so maybe i can convince him to try the V-mod again.

But as my title says, school's out for summer so i don't think i'll be seeing much more of my roommate for a while. No more Intel for me until Conroe.

can ya contact him and get him to do some superpi 1M/32M runs?

i have had it to 4014Mhz so far, load temp was 54c on watercooling at 1.63v measured with dmm
i will have to do a vdrop mod as the vcore drops .073 at load.
i will post some benchs shortly.

thanks, i'm seriously considering either one of these, or a 631, as a cheap processor to have a future conroe rig waiting for when i can get a 4MB L2 cache conroe for cheap.

Where where those 805's purchased from, if you don't mind my asking? My apologies if I missed that in the thread...I did look before asking.

It seems that ZZF has the best prices (around $126, shipped), but most sites have them priced pretty cheap so I'm more interested in finding out whose got a good batch than I am in saving a few dollars.

It was newegg or ZZF i don't remember.

Doesn't matter where you get it though. No such thing as good batches or steppings with these. All the same stepping SL8ZH IIRC.

Got my 805 today, and on my P5WD2 Prem. I'm having issues as soon as i get up to about 200 MHz FSB. Using the newest BIOS, and cooling with water.

Any ideas?

Should go over 200 easily. What issues exactly?

What are your PSU specs?

setting the FSB 200, the computer reboots before hitting the desktop. 199 is prime stable for hours though. Shouldn't be maxing out the CPU just yet as temps are good.

PSU is a Tagan 580 Watt unit.

Gotta be a mobo issue, but the P5WD2 my roommate used had no such problems at 200fsb, stock bios i am pretty sure.

I'd try one stick of RAM at a time to rule out RAM issues.

Just throwing something out there... Is that board a refurb or anything? Seems like you have a solid PSU.

Tested it with one stick of RAM, and a new BIOS, same issue. Even tried cooling the CPU with a Vapo just to make sure that it wasn't a heat issue.

Gonna try another board the -E version og the same board.

And no, new board, works great with other CPU's :)
