Recently PCWatch interviewed Daryl Ostrander - AMD R&D vice-president. As he stated company will introduce new chips production tech using Germanium. This will increase transistors speed up to 15% comparing to current SOI technology.

So, the reports are accurate. AMD 65nm launches in 2007. It'll be interesting to see if they use the K8 to tweak the process before hitting with K8L
I wasn't aware of how soon the 45nm builds were coming out. In fact, I didn't even know they were really on the schedule yet. That's quite impressive to hear.
Not really, you've just awash in nonsense from all the people who're saying AMD is gonna cave now and they keep falling farther and farther behind, etc.
That chart sums it up nicely, while they've always been behind Intel on process development, the delays have been consistent and not getting farther and farther apart.

Why are they building 65nm cores from mid 2006 and then only product launching 6 months later ?

So the question isn't if Intel is working on something new to take on K8L, of _course_ they are!!! The question is when they'll have it available AFAIK they haven't released any info. on any K8L-killers that are coming anytime soon (though to be fair all we've had on K8L info.-wise is increased FP units (which does not necessarily equate to increased FP performance) and some vague data on process improvements...).

Process development has nothing to do with the on die memory controller, that would be an architectural design feature that you could build on any modern CMOS process...Quote:

The product launch for 45mn is not listed, And where does K10 fit in? I not sure that K8l is going to be a big change. AMD may have a good 2H08, maybe not.:confused:
Intel 45nm launch is sooner than the chart said too.
The first photo is interesing. If that reflects Frecuency and leakage scalability, expect that Processors leakage increase as Frecuency increases would be fairly lineal and that most of them will overclock around the same.

Personally I couldn't care less about 65nm K8 CPUs. I'm only concerned with finding out what K8L has in store.
i'd love to see a 65nm K8, would give me a reason to by the DFI CFX3200 :D
So far the k8l's claim to fame is the doubling of floating point, which is matched by Conroe(both doing the same amount of work per cycle). It'd have to be clocked higher to achieve a win in fp over Conroe. That still leaves integer performance to address, which is where most of the crushing by Conroe is happening.
There is still some low hanging fruit in the way the x86 decoders work for the K8 that they could make use of, wouldn't hurt to have more L2 bandwidth either. It will supposedly also clock alot higher, but this is all rumours at this point, were gonna have to wait ~6 months before we know anything for sure....
There seems to be a lot of conflicting reports, is SiGe going to be on all 65nm processors, introduced on a revised 65nm process and standard for 45nm, or introed on 90nm and standard for 65nm?
I always thought they were going to go 90nm SiGe this year, then move to 65nm SiGe.
can anyone explain with details why sige is so good? or the benefits of it?
Its basically a way to boost the speed of a transistor much like strained silicon. It can be implemented on a current process and we'll get a boost in speeds. Quite how much of a boost is unknown, but a boost is a boost right?
Supposedly it's a 22% boost from 90nm DSL
Is it a 22% boost from 90nm DSL to 90nm SiGE, or from 90nm DSL to 65nm SiGe?

I guess Amd have to do something to boost their 90nm chips after all, even in the summer of next year the majority of amd chips will be 90nm, and SiGe should be enough of a push to keep them competitive. (much like the 130nm SSOI FX55 before the proper migration to SSOI on the 90nm process)
