a few Razer Copperhead questions

i currently use mx510 with teflon tape feet on a steelpad 4d. i love the motion of this combination, its very smooth. however the logitech is the cord is too thick and no matter what i do to secure it it has an influence on direction. ive been reading the Razer mice use a thinner and more flexable cord.

secondly, i am starting to think a smaller mouse would suit my style better. as i am uncomfortable with palming the whole mouse and using my arm to move it, i more or less use my fingers for fast transitions. the problem with this technique and the logitech mx design is the peripheral buttons basically become unusable, i can only access the Back button with my thumb, the others are awkwardly out of reach. the design of the coppehead looks much better for me.

i have a few questions before i order the copperhead, i cnat seem to find answers for.

2. do i have to use this mouse USB? understand it affects cpu performance and would rather keep it on the ps2 port. my mx510 is USB but i use a ps2-usb adapter, ive never heard of this with the Razer b/c it boasts 1000hhz with usb.

2. Yes. The CPU usage is next to nothing, don't worry. Mabey if you had a 200MHz pentium 1 you would have a problem, but even if you have anything 800mhz or faster you won't notice a thing.

4. No, but I'm sure you could. It would void the warrany however, so if something went wrong you'd be pretty much screwed.

BTW, to get full 1000Hz polling you will need to search google for a file called "usbmrs11.exe", it will modify the usbsys file in windows to support 1000hz, by default it only supports 500hz and the razer drivers don't change this.

thanks for that info, i thought standard usb poll rate was 125hz, do the razer drivers up this to 500hz? ive been reading about negative effects of using the patch, it overclocks all the usb ports an can cause problems with other usb devices

The copperhead drivers allow you to select up to 1000Hz, but it will still stay at 500hz unless you use that usb tweak.

Having used both the MX518 and copperhead for extended periods of use in competitive gaming, I can safely tell you that the copperhead kicks the sheit out of the MX518 in every way imaginable.

Now that the copperhead is more mature, and is working properly, this has to be the best damn mouse I've used. Ever.

In answer to #2, I do not believe that the Copperhead will work in a PS/2 config. I can verify this for you when I get home in 3-4 days.

i ordered the copper head sunday and it should be delivered tomorrow(tues), ill be sure to post my impressions vs the mx510. i do like the logitech shape but i think for gaming the button positions are too casual, i want my fingers to resting on the triggers at all times and it seems the copperhead will let me do that better, lik ei said i use my fingers for movement more than my palms..

Err a bit off topic, but doesn't running the USB at 1000hz harm the USB controller? Running USB at 500hz for a long period of time did a bit of harm to the controller on my P4C800-E.

Mabey with a cheap motherboard, but I've never had a single problem with my Ultra-D.

I don't believe the Razer will work with PS/2. In fact, Razer specifically said this is not possible and that is why they do not ship an PS/2->USB adapter with the mouse.

i have a mx500, 518, g5, diamondback plasma, copperhead and i can tell u that the razer mice excel in so many ways over the logitech. the layout of the buttons and feel of the mouse shape are excellent, and the performance and weight are wonderful, not that the g5 doesnt have an edge in that department, but ive always found the logitech mice heavy to begin with

I was dead set on a G5 and that razer sucked because of the design but I wanted a steelpad S&S with it... and only the razer had a working firmware for hard mousepads. I got the copperhead and was blown away by how comfortable it is. Takes a bit of time to get used to. The side buttons are a bit junky and hard to press compared to the logitechs but overall the mouse kicks ass.

Converted my friend from logitech to razer as well. He loves it. He's leik uber pro cod2 gamer like me ;)

You can remove the weight from the MX500/510/518. :fact: 2 minute job and makes the mouse so more comfortable.

im using the copperhead now, it has a completely different feel than the logitech but i am liking it. the light weight is fine and also the LEDs are much less gay than i imagined, i got anarchy red and i was worried it would look pink, not so its pretty deep.

i have a "hitchhikers thumb" so the side buttons on the this Razor fit my thumb position perfectly, now i am always resting my thumb on both buttons simultneously. i always had to readjust my thumb to hit the side buttons on the mx-510 and usually couldnt even reach the browser forward button without a serious stretch.

the cord is also alot more flexable which has completely eliminated cord tug. the Razer scroll wheel is 100% better than the logitech in size, feel, and motion IMHO, and the scroll wheel pushbutton is actually usable on the Razor, its way too stiff on the logitech..

i do still prefer the arched shape of the logitech, im finding it awkward to hold my wrist so straight with the razor, maybe ill readjust in a couple days. also as many have mentioned the side buttons on the right are basically unreachable so im not sure i will use the adjustable dpi feature often.

also the software doesnt allow nearly as many windows button functions as the logitech, but otherwise i think the software adjustment options are really great, i need to start toying with x/y axis adjustment for easier headshots.

there is one MAJOR disappointment for me though, when you lift the copperhead off the pad it still records motion for like 1/2". this is reallly going to take some getting used to.

i have a question about the DPI setting and sensitivty adjustment. right now i have the DPI at 2000 but the sensitivity is only like 4 or 5(any higher and FPS are really jerky), it feels the same as having the DPI at like 800 and the sensitivty at 9 or 10. so whats the benefit of having a higher DPI?

technically, a higher dpi is more accurate than a low dpi with a high sensitivity.

yea ive been noticing on the higher DPI settings its slightly easier to move the pointer single pixels.

and i just found the macro fuction for the mouse buttons, by assigning keyboard shortcuts you can custom program functions. i have the wheel button assigned to launching new a browser window and automatically directing window to home page (Ctl-N + Alt-Home), and now i REALLY would like to be able to access those two right side buttons.

I've done the weight removal on the MX510, but it should be the same on any MX500 series mouse..
On the underside of the mouse, there is 3 screws. 2 on the FCC/CE sticker, 1 on the MX logo sticker. They are marked by cross marks, stick a screw driver in each one and remove the top of the mouse. Weight is, if I remember, held in by a couple of screws remove those and the weight should just come out with no force. Screw the bottom of the mouse back on, done. Make sure you keep anything you take out incase you wanna put the weight back in of course. When I did this to my MX510 a long while back, a spring came out with the weight, I can't remember what it went to, but it didn't do any harm to the functioning of the mouse. I'll try it on my MX518 later so I can write a more detailed guide with pics.

Crap. I just opened my MX-518 and the scroll wheel fell out along with its holder? And two springs. I will post pic in a sec. This is trouble!

just put it back in, it's not much trouble :) same happened to me when I took my MX510 apart.

Update Ok, I managed to get the scroll wheel to work and back in place. However, problem is, it now doesn't have any stops (hitches, the places it stay). Now it just scrolls freely. Which isn't how it's intended... it's got probably got to do with either or both of those springs. Frustrating. What spring(s) have you got connected to your mouse wheel?

Looks a bit different to the MX510.. stick the wheel holder and wheel back in, spring #2 is the spring that came out of my MX510, don't bother putting that back in unless you can find where it goes.. could you get me a higher res of the lid? The weight on the 510 was a metal block screwed into the lid.

Just took mine apart, I can't see where spring 2 goes to, but 1 attaches to the wheel holder. I can't find a weight in my 518 either..

So there are no weights to remove in the MX518? That sure is a bummer since it's very heavy and especially since I now have two springs loose. Anyway, let's try to get Spring #1 back in place. Could you post picks of how it's attached to the wheel holder? Also where else it attaches? Actual wheel maybe? Any ideas on how to get it back on? What edge of the wheel holder, exactly where is it attached and what side of Spring #1? Anything like this. Thanks!

EDIT: I notice after reconstructing my wheel assembly, it only needs a light touch to press MOUSE3, probably loosened the whole thing a bit.

Thanks bro. I now managed to get the lazy scroll back with the stops. However, we still need to fix Spring #1. There is still the problem of the Scroll Wheel / MB3 never goes to it's up-position. It stays down. Spring #1 is supposed to make sure it goes back to it's top position. Could you please take some pics of how Spring #1 is mounted in your MX-518?

Those pics were of spring 1 ;) I have no problem here getting Mouse3 to go up. The other spring was attached to the wheel-holder and the other end was resting on the 2nd button. It fell out here too, I haven't figured out what way it goes back either, but the spring fell out of my MX510 too, and the middle button works fine. Could you take a pic of how you stuck spring 1 back onto the wheel?

The thing is, the button 3 won't bounce up as far as it did before I opened it. It works, but not as good as before.

Instead of looking like this ___/ \___ it looks like ___ n ___ ... it's a bad ASCII drawing but I think it helps get my point forward. The bulge is the scroll wheel / mb 3 of course.

Yeah I understand what you mean now, my Mouse3 feels a bit wierd, really sensitive, I'm going to sleep now, but I'll take a look at my mouse tomorrow and see if I can fit the other spring on.

spring 2 slides over the nipple in the center of the wheel and just rests on those two notched raised platforms on the right hand side of this pic. it uses its own tension to support the right side of the wheel. if you bend spring 2 to be more flat it will reduce the force required to push wheel button 3, but if the tension is too low it wont recoil and it will keep button3 pushed in. masterofpuppets the reason its easier to push button3 is that without that spring the only resistance is the actual microswitch.

if you bend spring 1 down it will lessen the "notchiness" in the scroll wheel turning, if you remove it the wheel with spin freely. i bent mine up b/c i wanted it to be more notchy so i wouldnt accidentally scroll two clicks like i have been doing.

The newer MX510s don't have weights in them.

I managed to fix the issue by getting Spring #2 back in place.

The coil of Spring #2 is placed around the cylinder on the scroll wheel marked by a red circle. Much like the old in-out-in-out. xD
While the two :banana::banana::banana::banana:s on the edges of Spring #2 goes into the cavities marked by green circles. I'm sure you can understand by thinking a little and looking at the marks on the pic. Good luck!

Yes indeed. My MX518 is incredibly un-ergonomic due to its weight. Considering upgrading to a Copperhead for that reason alone. As far as I can understand, the Copperheads are significantly lighter, no?

At least I got my MX518 back together and learned something in the progress. :)

yeah the copperhead weight is hardly noticable and also perfectly balanced. my mx510 is ass-heavy, it makes the back of the mouse droop when i pick up up from the sides.
