Nvidia will not enable SLI support for Intel chipsets.
Sorry about the short answer, the reasoning was a bit odd.
"Intel chipsets do not provide enough bandwidth to support SLI"

Load up the 66.81 drivers with a couple 6800 cards, works just fine.
Its all political.
What about the patch that Asrock released which apparently made the drivers think that they were running on an Nvidia chipset no matter what chipset the board actually used, has anyone tried them?
Really? Strange considering Xfire uses more bandwith....
It appears they have forgotten that more than half of the market is strictly Intel and that will continue to grow with the arrival of Conroe. :slapass:

So you can sell your cards to buyers with an Intel platform, this will hurt Nvidia.
Some people prefer Nvidia based graphics, its a shame that Nvidia wants to play this way. it only hurts them and their customer base.

PR guys from nVidia, are you listening? I have owned 12 7800GTX/7900GTX cards in the last year. My last ATI purchase was an x850XT when it first came out. Guess who just bought a pair of x1900XTX cards for CF? Yep....this guy.

There is a third party patch, I have it right here on my desktop, I just dont have an SLI system to test if it works....
Crossfire will take all top spots on the ORB, this includes 2K5.
Conroe spanks 3D hard, no score is safe on the ORB.
keep in mind that nVidia is only a competitor for Intels Chipsets? oO most people prefer Intel Chipsets for Intel Processors (yeah, me too). so it's clear if Intel would ask: "Well, dude, can we add SLI support to our Mobos?" for sure nVidia says: "no, sweet, I'll bring out my own Chipsets to RULE THEM ALL!! kehkeh ^^" mkay, mixing up several films is bad... sry, for that.Quote:

The only thing I miss about nVidia and its cards is their drivers, or rather their drivers' control panel. ATi's CCC simply sucks, I learned to hate it in the past few months.
Other than that, I don't like those politics either, and the reply FUGGER got is a straigt out lie, I guess nVidia will need to learn the hard way where that gets them. Not into my new rig, that's for sure.
am i the only one suspecting that nv is working on a new chipset for conroe? if they are, at least it makes some kind of sense. if history repeats itself, their next intel chipset should be good, and by not enabling sli on intel chipsets, they are limiting competition.

i saw a guy toss some 6600gt's on a p5wd2-premium 955x in SLI with hacked drivers and it dominated basically every single nvidia chipset based score out there with air cooling

I'm not convinced nvidia will not support conroe unless Intel have decided to stop them and it is Intel's decision. nvidia spent a lot of time getting into the Intel camp to want to go back to putting all their eggs with AMD when it looks like Intel are in the driving seat now.
What's more likely is that nvidia supports conroe but does not overclock as well as Intel chipset ..just like with P4. Possibly some interesting choices to make in the coming months.
I'm not convinced the ORB will be turning red soon. I take it from k|ngp|n's comment that MM is constucting an nvidia GX2 quad SLi system and so this is likely to have massive graphics power at least. Whether that causes the AMD cpu to choke is another matter, doing Sli causes cpu overhead, does quad Sli cause 2 x cpu overhead ?

What? C19 was just made for Intel? All nVidia did was spit out a south-bridge which I could imagine that it's not a part "that" sophisticated to make, so "that" ammount of time just showed how much effort they put into a P.O.S. chipset which 90% of people got burned by not being able to overclock their CPUs nowhere near an Intel Core Logic can. I'd take an ECS with an SiS chipset before I take a P2ND2-SLI or any other nForce 4 chipset.Quote:

I think guilt goes to both of the player, Nvidia and Intel. Nvidia has ho have permision to produce (legaly) chipsets for intel platform. so they must have an arrangement with Intel.
Same goes with Sli for intel chipsets. If Intel would be really interested in SLI on their chipsets, I think they could come to some sort of agreement, cause Intel can just said to Nvidia: "no more nf for Intel then".
Some of the facts just saddens me, that we, enthusiast are left out, be honest, Sli today presents a much better solution for dual GPU than CrossFire, single GPU Ati can really much presents a competition, but CrossFire needs a lot of work. Especially that you need a master card is real bad. Why can't you just put two 1900XTX together?
well it looks like this to me.... amd is nvidia's chipset cash cow... once conroe is in the wild, we will have alot of people buying conroe's instead of amd's chips. this puts a hurting on nvidia's chipset sales. so to combat this, they will not support conroe, nor let intel enable sli on its chipsets to force people into buying thier chipsets for amd chips. this will preserve their chipset market.
there seems to be alot of interest in conroe compared to am2. i dont think sli is going to be enough to persuade people from buying conroe. ati needs to do a little work on their xfire, but after they figure that out i dont think nvidia will have any leverage to force people not to buy intels chips.
if intel enabled sli on their chipset, im sure it would own anything nvidia could come up with.... their best bet is to allow intel to do this, and sit back and collect the royalties. :fact:

As to the bandwidth comment, Crossfire uses up way more bandwidth than SLI. Especially in mastercard-less configs.

This is really stupid of nVidia to say the least. Frankly this sort of "we are going to push for OUR format becasue we're better" mindset is what killed Glide and 3dFX.

While ATi's arrogance is astounding this really takes the cake. Not only are they going to miss out on almost all the market but they are not going to be fully directX 10 complient, instead it will be a butchered version like current X1k cards for atleast another generation (not good).
The fact of the matter is they need to sit down and admit they cannot build good chipsets. The only reason why it flies on AMD is because VIA and SiS are so :banana::banana::banana::banana:ty that it makes them appear awesome but on Intel that isnt going to work.
If they want to get into the Intel market they need to fix their power specs and their memory controller issues. Maybe then people will buy it, but preventing people from using SLI on intel chipsets is suicide.
Need I remind everyone that the RV570 does not need a dongle to use Xfire, it is for all intensive purposes identical to the SLI mechanism that nVidia uses. Their time of dominance is quickly coming to a close.
As far as I'm aware making a chipset support SLI is simply a case of providing the relevent PCI-E lanes, there is no technology that needs licensing other than PCI-E. Ergo anyone can produce an SLI chipset if they can produce a PCI-E chipset, the only limitation is NVIDIA's drivers.
NVIDIA licensed the Intel FSB technology to produce NForce 4 for Intel systems, but they refuse to open up there drivers to allow SLI to operate on non-NForce chipsets. Simple as that.
well, i was going off the posts that i have seen on the web, and on this site in paticular. conroe is showing very strong. that alone probably has nvidia thinking about what it needs to do. i think not supporting conroe is a big mistake, and they will hurt in the pocketbook for that mistake.Quote:

I think that its going to come down to conroe comes out and if Nvidia is the best GPU available at the time people will mod drivers, if ATI is the best it will take awhile.
It is not a technical issue.
It is a money/licensing issue.
You see the NVidia NForce4 Ultra and NForce 4 SLI chipsets are the same, technically. As you could see in the past, you can turn Ultra equipped mainboards into SLI boards with some simple traces on the board. However, while the chipsets are the same technically, they have been sold differently. If the motherboard maker only payed for a set labeled "ultra" then NVidia will not allow them to make a SLI board from them. If they bought the same chipset but it was labled "SLI" and they payed extra money then they can make a SLI board.
I have to remind people that many U.S. versions of the DFI Ultra-D board, which is normally easily moddable to SLI, have been "protected" against the modding by applying a load of epoxy above the modding area. By DFI, after NVidia slapped them.
Given all the above it is absolutely clear that NVidia cannot allow any independent chipset maker to run SLI if they didn't receive their SLI "tax". If they would allow Intel to do so, then all their customers who have to pay the SLI tax, or who cannot make a SLI board from an Ultra chipset, would cry "foul".
its normal that nvidia dont want that sli works on intel chipsets, they want to sell their own. but i think they would only win if sli would work on intel chipsets...
Look at the profit of selling two high end video cards vs one low end mobo, chances are the mobo would be returned defective anyway (check return shelf at Fry's)

From PC Perspective
Over the past few days I conducted an email interview with Regeneration. He's the man responsible for modifying the ULI "SLI Driver" (properly known as the PowerExpress utility) to run on chipsets not SLI-certified like VIA K8T890 and Intel 975X. NVIDIA and Regeneration have since reached an amicable resolution, but the interview is still insightful and gives a closer look at the man who drew the (legal) attention of one of the world's biggest graphics companies.
PCPer: What is your background and what motivated you to write the "SLI Patch"?
I’m dealing with computers for 13 years. I must say that I didn't write the SLI Patch myself. ULi/Asrock wrote it, I just added modifications in order to enable it for other chipsets. However, it’s not easy because to make perfect because of equipment issues. For that patch I tried to obtain an Asrock motherboard but I couldn’t find it in the shops here. So without many choices, I had to use beta testers in order to make the patch work well. It was very hard to the find right beta testers. I used Google to search for users with an Asrock motherboard with an ULi chipset and tried to convince them to beta test for that project and I must say that the success rate was very low. That’s the main reason why the SLI Patch is far from being perfect. With the right equipment, I will be able to increase the success rate up to 100%.
My motivation is the crazy street price. In my country (Israel) hardware is over-priced. For example, 7900GTX is around to 1000$ and 6800 is still around 800$. The target audience for both NVIDIA and ATi are gamers and I think that most of the gamers are young. In Israel the average salary is around to 1000$ and it’s hard to afford all these products. They always talk about MSRP but they never speak about the street price, especially outside of the USA.
I’m just trying to help the community and hope that everyone will be capable to enjoy from the latest technology. We all know that Radeon X1600/1300 series are capable to run together with software emulation. I always believed it’s possible for both SLI/Crossfire platforms. However, both NVIDIA and ATI are not providing much information to developers. For example, it is possible to adjust voltages in G70 via software but Nvidia is not providing the information to developers, only to their OEMs. SLI Motherboard in my country is around to 250-300$, we pay extra 100$ for their software. Another example is Intel. The only motherboard I know that support SLI for Intel users is nForce4 Intel Edition and it’s not easy to find it in the shops. After all, the “poor” deserve to play the latest PC games as well.
Just to remind you that if you want to go with SLI, you’ll need a very powerful power supply, SLI motherboard and two 3D cards. Most of the people can’t afford even a single card.
PCPer: Did you have any contact with ULI or NVIDIA prior to writing the software?
We had relations with ULi but few months before they were bought by NVIDIA we stopped receiving emails from them.
PCPer: Did you expect NVIDIA to send you a cease and desist letter? What did you expect from them?
No I didn’t expect it. I expected they will contact us nicely and in respected way. We’re giving them a lot of media exposure and the minimum we ask is just a small amount of the respect.
PCPer: Assuming you can continue writing the software, would you even consider it? Has this turned you off from it?
I will continue with my projects and I must say that yesterday I really wanted to drop all GeForce-based projects. I’m not asking for people to thank me but all I want is a small amount of respect. After all, we serve NVIDIA's customers and we do it for free.
PCPer: Regardless of how this incident with NVIDIA turns out, what are your plans for the future? Any other projects you care to mention?
I’m not a person for plans or schedules. I just live the moment and every day/hour/minute/second I might start a new project. I usually think about it when I try to sleep. However, I’m very busy recently because I’m trying to run NGOHQ and you probably know what it's like to run a website. A lot of reviews, news, articles and downloads are taking most of my free time - especially, when you do most of it on your own. My plans for the future is to make NGOHQ into a famous website and when I will have enough free time (and equipment) then I could start some new projects (without the need to beg people to beta test for me). Until then, I will keep working on my modified drivers and keep supporting the community with everything I can, in my available time. Oh and speaking about NVIDIA, today they called me and we solved everything. [ See update after this interview. - Ed. ]
PCPer: From your responses I get a sense that a major motivation is to allow people with limited money access to better performing technology. It is a noble cause, but software like yours can be easily abused by others. Do you think it's possible to balance/regulate this? Is it a concern for you?
You can see people abusing stuff everywhere. But when you receive positive emails and you see posts in forums that your work helped people and you see letters like: "You saved my LAN party" then you don’t care about the "abusers". It’s my only motivation. There is a negative side in everything, but you just learn to look at the positive side and appreciate it.
Look at overclocking software for example. It's very useful but on the other side bad people (virus writers) can use it to cause huge damage. I’m sure your hardware won't like too much voltage, but it’s not preventing us from using it right? Same thing goes for P2P and everything in life.
Do you draw any similarities between yourself to other contemporary code modders/hackers like Angel Trinidad (author of Omega drivers), or Jon Lech Johansen (aka. "DVD Jon" - the one responsible for breaking CSS encryption on DVDs)?
I don't know DVD Jon and I'm not dealing with cracking. Angel “Omegadrive” Trinidad is a good friend of mine and yes I agree we have some similarities between us. But he’s currently very busy (even more than me). There are many skilled people in the community and it's too bad not everyone is using their skills fully.
Both of us are dealing with modified drivers, some people think we are just taking registry entries and stuff like this but they don’t know that somehow we have to find out about these entries and to research it on our own. No one is providing that information and we have to do it all. Most of our users are gamers and Anti-Cheat applications don’t like when you make “cold” modifications. One time I made few modifications to the OpenGL driver and everyone who tried to use it got blocked by some anti-cheat application. Since then I’m trying to play it safe.
PCPer: What is the most positive / rewarding experience you gained during the whole process of creating the patch? Did you learn anything interesting? Do you have any regrets? How has this experience changed you as a person?
I don’t have any regrets, but sometimes I do feel it because I’m trying to help and many people refuse to beta test or support me. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting sick of it until I see the happy faces as a result of all my projects. And yes I learned that with some knowledge, desire and some free time you can make everything. And I mean EVERYTHING!
This case we have seen here is just one of many such stories we read about on a regular basis whether it be HomeBrew for the PSP, or modchips for the latest console system. As we have more enterprising consumers do more with their goods than was originally intended, you will have companies that will see it as a violation and pursue different avenues to secure their brand or intellectual property.
Occasionally a company will nurture grassroots innovation and even integrate it into their offerings. In those rare cases everyone wins.

you can still run SLI with Nvidia chipsets..........the fact that those chipsets don't perform as good as Intel ones is a different story........i think Intel needs to start REALLY supporting companies like Nvidia and ATI and get them to develop chipsets with full Intel support...........i'm sure that one of the main reasons for lack of performance from nvidia chipsets for Intels is lack of real support from Intel so have a genuine alternative chipset maker on the market.........you should be telling Intel to get their act together here as wellQuote:

Intel seems to be working closely on motherboard development. The low end DG series (sub 100) HTPC capable mobos are all Xpress chipsets nowsold under Intel part #.

I don't know how it makes any sense for Nvidia to cut itself out of more (less?) than half of the high end graphics market by not enabling SLI on Intel. That's one of those "cut your nose off to spite your face" kinda things.Quote:

I read a review on the 590 sli and it was Ok but it brought the power consumpion to be 40watts more total system power to above that of an Intel 3.73 EE . Not good if people are really using power usage as a guage to judge systems. The 590 fails miserably . Hot running chipset that is power hungry beast. NV
