DFI Expert = CPU death

I had my second expert die on me a few weeks ago. The first expert passed away in early December but not before it took out a 3800 X 2 and an FX 55. The replacement expert lasted for 3 months with no problems, until one sunny morning when I went to turn it on and nothing happened. R. I. P. Opty 175

Now some may consider me a NOOB, I've only been OC'ing for 20 years and I've worked with some troublesome boards in the past. But by far this is the most Psychotic board I've ever seen. Now we all know that according to DFI fans this board as no problems at all except for the CPU overvolt which was Unofficially fixed in BIOS 12/07 and the high end PSU problem which requires a resistor be put into the 5 volt line to prevent the cold boot issue ($15 RMA to fix a problem this board doen't have). Darn those PSU MFG's for not adhereing to DFI spec. But when all is said at the end of the day every time you turn your rig off you need to say a little pray and hope it will will not take out your CPU.

Were you using VID special? The reason I ask is that it was implicated in the original Expert CPU deaths and for another reason - I have lost 2 CPUs inexplicably using the Asus A8N32 and its overvolt function. I haven't (yet) lost a CPU to either of my Expert boards, but don't use VID special on a daily basis.

I don't know if VID special uses extra regulation; certainly A8N32 overvolt adds the second 4-phase and the stability that brings was my reason for using it. I'd be interested to find out what circumstances your CPUs failed in.

The First time I was using low Vcore with VID. Specaluation had it that Using low vcore with VID at 110% or higher could cause the cpu to see up to 3 volts at start up. Lost my first two CPU's with that combination. I haven't used VID since then even with the 12/07 BIOS. I ran the CPU at 260 X 10 at 1.42 NO VID Everything was Fine for 3 months until the last time I turned it on.

What voltage where you feeding the mems?

Vdimm was set at 2.7

Both my eXperts went away (and took 170's with them) without using special VID on either... Vdimm @ 2.6... Fortron 500PS in the first build, OCZ 520 in the second... MOSFET's up in smoke! So I'll soon have a replacement eXpert in the FS thread as I'm not rolling those dice again. :(

Well it may not be too soon, you understand it you've ever had to RMA anything through Monarch... :D

How long did you have them? Were you doing anything... unusual? This is a major concern to me, with one on phase and one about to go on water.

The thought of killing my cpu every time I reboot my machine to do some tweaking concerns me as well. I keep my cold boots to a minimum and always have my PC on 24/7, but sometimes it's necessary to totally power down (when changing ram, ect). Soon as a new board that I like comes out, waiting for the new sapphires, I think I will be putting this one back in the box and sending it to the closet for storage... :para:

The RDX200 has the same layout with Expert , it killed 2 CPUs of mine after 1 month running fine

Before that i used DFI NF4 SLI-D and no problem in 1 year

I scare the 4 phrase layout of DFI :slapass:

The first one lasted for 30 days, the second lasted 67... They were close to identical situations. #1 - Just playing on the net, no benching, clocking, testing or anything else. Turned the machine off and went to bed. Next morning got up hit the switch smoke rolled from the MOSFet's near the CPU, end of story (board and chip gone)... #2 Same story, turned the box on in the morning, checked mail, browsed XS and then shut it down to go out on calls. Came back 2 hours later, hit the switch, same thing without the smoke... :(

I'm never going there again, good luck with yours though......

Yeah, I'm on the same page... Either going 580 Sapphire when released or Asus when their bios issues are resolved... Which ever happens first. :)

pcdoc1, what are you using now out of interest?

I tried an A8N 32-Sli deluxe, but the temps were really hot on it. First boot and Asus probe was in the red.

The expert is my first DFI board. After reading these scare stories, among other things, I have been considering going for the ultra-d (non expert). Does that seem like a good move or not?

Were any of you who got burnt, able to get the cpu's replaced on warranty? Not sure if that is a daft question or not.

I had a lot of boards laying around so I just through in an MSI Neo4 Plat to run while sorting out the 580 stuff... Interestingly, (and I won’t respond to what could become another debate), I’m running all the same components I had in the previous build including a 170 that I’ve owned for 6 months, and previously tested in an eXpert, and have all the same stability with a 150MHZ higher OC… Hmmm… ;)

I can’t give you an opinion of the Ultra-D as I’ve never owned one…

Both 170’s were replaced by AMD, which it exactly why I’ll only purchase retail processors from here forward.

Similarly to you. I mentioned this in another thread, my asus premium gives me a higher overclock than the expert on same voltage. Obviously limted bios and no special vid on the premium. I've never used a multimeter before so didn't actually check whether these were real readings.

In addition two other guys here in Thailand, with same stepping chips from the same retailer, are getting better OC's on their ultra-d's. I know that isn't saying anything necessarily.

Sorry to go a bit off topic ie.e dfi expert - death, but if these experts are dodgy then alternatives have to be considered. Including MSI;)

I've run 11/7 bios on my AB0 rev EXPERT with both a 170 and a 3800+ for benching at up to 1.85v with 3.8vdimm and all is fine. These boards are so flakey though. Sorry for your losses :(

So your mobo and cpu died cause of the cold boot issue?

I’ve seen some people beat this boards severely without issue, maybe the AB0’s are actually fixed… :confused:

It's also possible that some of us just aren't "Man Enough" to handle a DFI board.... LOL :)

I've never seen any advantage over the Ultra-D.
I recall the first Xperts that came out, those killed a number of CPU's as well.

Well, I don't quite like that the original poster gave no information whatsoever about the voltages used (intended), the equipment lost and fine details like whether he used hard power on (on the PSU) very shortly after powering down the unit.

I'm not going to blame a board just on that.

I lost 2 DFI experts, 1 CANBE 0530 AMPW Opteron 146 that freakin did 3.1ghz on air, and a 4200X2 that died at stock.

Thats almost 1.5g's down the drain due to DFI's :banana::banana::banana::banana:ty design.

Why oh WHY didn't I stick with my sli-d?

to be honest: maybe dfi makes good boards but most of them have strange issues. remember my nfII ub - bios death several times...dfi sux...it sucked with socket a boards, same now with the 939..I am really impressed how many people still buy dfi even there where so many many problems since years.

Really strange, this is not the first time i ear about DFI Expert CPU Killing Spree... Glad i have an A8N32-SLI. Thats really strange, even with the resistor soluction and other ones that i had readed looks like nothing can stop DFI from killing processors...

No VID means setting VID to Auto?

I just put my 3800 X2 with my Expert under water, and it suddenly died, I have no clue what it was but I am not so quick to blame my expert yet. Earlier before deciding upon putting my expert under water I made a post @ DFI-Street which turned into nuclear war, the admins seemed pretty damn defensive about saying there is nothing wrong with the board, but we @ XS say otherwise. Now my main question is, since I am scared to fry my next 3800 X2 from RMA, should I sell this and my AB0 Ultra-D and get a Ultra-D AD0? (Not to jack the thread or anything) That new BIOS OPB got his Micron to 300HTT is looking damn nice

For all those who've lost a cpu so far... How do you reset the CMOS? By jumper, battery, or both? I've read that resetting by battery can cause the vcore to significantly jump at first bootup. :eh:

Never heard that, but I pull the power, switch the jumper, and then the battery. For more extreme clearing I remove the ATX connectors and for Xtreme (;)) clearing all the items from the motherboard

Now, was that distilled water? What was the water temp? Was the board properly submerged to cover the caps only or did it also cover the chipset cooler? Did you allow algae to grow on the resistors? Did any fish shyt on the extra three-pin fan connectors? Did you read page 32 - paragraph 16 – appendix f referencing “Fish Shyt and the Expert”!

Dang, I just a bought an Expert and haven't started using it, but now I'm f'ing scared. I think I'm just gonna stick with my Ultra-D that's stable and clocks like a pro. Oh well, a third PCI slot would've been nice :(

What revision is it? I'd say go for it, there are a lot of users with positive results, but beware :stick:

I've heard that the expert is better at clocking 2x1G kits than the Ultra-D, is that true? I'd do anything to squeeze some more mhz out of my Cronus

The results are skewed because most people who don't have problems never take the time to vote in threads like that. Yes the results are skewed.
But I never see another motherboard frequenty been reported like this.
And not all people knows XS and (intended to)register to vote here for problem-free or dead/problematic board.

I owned a DFI before, and that's a Lanparty NFII Ultra B. It gave me neutral impression. Good overclocker, very good, but with some fundamental defects which DFI-streets obviously refused to help.

I probably will buy/upgrade my CPU+MOBO+RAM in summer.

I'll see if there will be some good deals then.

I don't think that theory applies here.... 10% of people having a problem, is a REAL damn problem… You can’t assume that people that have no issue just don’t reply because this is XS, a certified DFI breeding ground. Everyone here is proud and anxious to post that they are “Man Enough” to run a DFI… I guess I wasn’t….. :(

So lets ask the obvious question: how many CPUs have been assassinated while under the oppression of a DFI Ultra-D or SLI-DR? How many CPUs have died from being used in an ASUS, MSI, Epox, Gigabyte, and even ASRock?

Come on. Surely if owners were having CPUs die because of these motherboards, wouldn't they have complained? If you look at the statistics, it shows that the DFI expert has killed more CPUs than any other board, making the fact that owning one is just as safe on your CPU as you walking perpendicularly on an 8 lane freeway. Sometimes cars will miss you, and sometimes they will slow down. And sometimes you are gonna get run over.

Lots of people have had stuff taken out by Ultra-D/SLI-DR's but they mostly assumed it was a fluke. The second someone said there was a chronic problem with the Expert people went berserk and called conspiracy theory. I've personally lost an FX-55 and a 146 CABNE 0530APMW to an Ultra-D and many other people have lost lots of memory, especially UTT.

Talking about UTT is a seperate issue. That was a direct result of a crappy implementation of RAM 4v option. Obviously it didn't work correctly on those boards, and that was the result of the death. But here we are talking about spontanous unexplainable deaths.

I am sure I can kill my Opteron 170 in my Ultra-D right now by feeding it 1.8v and shutting my fan off, but thats hardly the point.

I can account for at least 7 DFI Ultra-Ds that have not killed a CPU.

So let me get this straight, DFI made a mistake on those motherboards and it resulted in many people having hardware failure. I'm not sure I see the distinction.

I am sure you did lose those CPU's as you describe, but people have lost hardware on every motherboard and so far I don't think there have been enough confirmed cases to justify the paranoia some people have been exhibiting.

Its funny to see the same folks appear on these DFI threads time and again. Someone posts of trouble with a DFI mobo in the system, and these same faces come popping out of the woodwork. Its kinda funny.

Anyways, if I wasn't sure before, I certainly am now. Given all the experts out there in the wild now, there are definitely too few cpu deaths reports to provide any meaningful trend other than coincidence and the usual troubles with a high end tweakers board. I see a post of trouble here or there, then i see the "pile on" by the usual suspects.

For those newer to XS, I suggest you check the sigs to see what folks are running. Most of the seasoned guys that have had great success with the expert don't even post on these kind of threads. That can be a bit misleading.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled debate....

Anyone with dead utt on dfi...Just ask the ram maker to reprogram SPD to 2-3-2 and your ram will be back from the dead:)

That one cracked me up good. Come on man, I like DFI. He was talking statistics so I jumped in. And I was going to reply to his comment, but I'll leave it at that...

All I'm gonna say is that I had multiple SLI D's and DR's and they were all awesome board aside from my first obviously defective one which killed $400 of redline.

After running 3.0 24/7 on air and 3.1ghz benching for MONTHS, I switched to a DFI expert so I could watercool chipset. 3 days later, boom, dead CABNE 0530 146. Mobo died too

Ordered a new expert and popped in a 4200. Worked awesome for one day. Next day, dead 4200 but mobos alive. Never even overclocked it

Just ordered an Asus A8n32 SLI. I can live with 300HTT and a warm boot issue as long as my chip does.

I killed a FX55 on a SLI-D but in the end I found it was my fault, now with the Expert and honestly it's been a great board really cannot moan about anything VERY stable and dam good fun to try to get the best from it.

Now please no one take this personal but sometimes things like voltage % etc can and do go wrong FX55 RIP :-( but I think there must be times when this mobo must have been blamed for driver error.

What are the 'safest' voltage settings? Such as 1.5v and Auto for special or something like 1.4v 107%? Special?

what would be a great alternative to this expert?

I've had only two DFI boards
1- Ultra-D modded to SLI with a gig of G-Skill LE and a very early SD 3700 clocked to 2800(My first build/overclock)
2- My current rig in my sig.

Both builds have been 100% trouble free other than the usual learning issues. I feel bad for everyone who has had parts die but I see so many that have lost multiple cpus and you have kept using DFI boards that you blame for the death of your parts. My question is why do you do this to yourselves and then come to a site called xtreme systems( do you see the irony here or shall I turn it up for you? ) and complain?
