Nice pics Stilt. I've been running these mods for a few weeks now. People should be aware that the Vcore mod works better without setting the pot too low trying to get minimum droop (< 10 millivolts). On the scope, there was a lot of switching noise present that isn't caught by traditional monitor programs when cranking way down on the pot. (minimizing resistance). Although the droop was great, the switching noise not picked up by monitors made my system MORE unstable than setting it for 20-30 millivolt droop. Wouldn't recommend setting the pot lower than 30K ohms either. This mod alters the Analog Devices already present droop circuit that seems to be tuned for 65AMPS and I'm playing around with an R/C network into the feedback pin that allows Vcore ro RISE on load. Sorta like afterburners....

Not to answer for the stilt, but these illustrations look very good. Just be real careful you don't turn the pots down to zero resistance. I'd also set the pot for maximum resistance when firing up the board for the first time and tweek them down slowly until you're happy.Quote:

I modded my P5WD2 Premium (955) according to the older pictures.
In those picures, the connection for vDroop is slightly different.
Why is that? Should I change it?
Another problem is the fact that when a peak of more than 1.7V on the mosfets (so not the actual vcore) occurs, my PSU shuts down.
Is there a way to override this "protection"???
Or could it be the Tagan EasyCon 530 (combined load on 12V lines)??? Recently switched from OCZ Powerstream 520 to this one...

which resistance of rezistor will be best for droop mod? what is the perfectly resistance for your mobo? I want to use the 30k resistor and I think that the best effects we will take ~20k
that vdroop is different. I saw one for the chip itself and a 50k pot.
Anyway, do you use a multimeter to determine the ohm of the resister BEFORE you solder it in place? What should the reading be before I start the computer?
One last think...was it worth it?...Did you find a difference doing the vdroop mod?

This mod is for those timid or over caffienated people that don't want to take a soldering gun to your mobo. This is no joke and works quite well. The goal is to lower the resistance of the Analog Devices droop circuitry from about 75k to 40k ohms. The PIC below has a "proper" vdroop mod, so please ignore the wires and pot which isn't required. Should be able to do this mod without removing the mobo.
Sharpen a #2 or any other soft lead pencil really sharp. Jam the tip of the pencil between Pins 17 and 18 of the Buck Boost converter/regulator. Rotate the pencil while applying slight downward pressure, then snap off tip of lead so it remains jammed between the pins. Low risk, should keep droop under 20 millivolts:

Hmm this is interesting, could something else be used? Say a small clip of some sort or maybe a couple strands of wire? ANy specific reason why you say use #2 pencil lead? Man, Your droop is about as bad as the P5WD2-E gets. Don't try to use anything but a pencil led or you'll waste the mobo and maybe the CPU. The lead lowers the resistance between the pins, not shorts them together. Even though this looks simple, it has to be done very carefully or you will definately damage something. The best way is to mod the board as the Stilt describes at the top of this post. You may want to put heatsinks on the MOSFETS which helps a little. There are a few posts on this already in other threads. You can search for them with the search toolQuote:

The droop is different depending on what CPU your're running. A single core draws less current, and will droop less than a dual core.
I took a 100k resistor set to max and booted the board into Windows and then compared idle and load voltages with a DMM and adjusted the droop on the fly.
Some notes:
- I have had troubles when setting it to zero droop, so I usually leave it at 10-20mv.
- Load it to 100%, SuperPi is not enough.
- It you start with 1.400 idle and 1.320 load you might end up with 1.480 idle and 1.470 load because the droop mod increases the voltage aswell. Take care with Presler when doing this.
- Also make sure you measure the vcore at the CPU side of one coil to get a real value. (There is a voltage drop across the coils which should be taken into account)

Same here. Found better stability and less heat generated by the MOSFETS if droop was set to 10-20 millivolts. Try a SPi1M run and crank up the FSB till you get rounding errors, then set the droop for 15mv, rounding errors should go away. At least this is what works best on my rig. YMMV

Vdroop and reading point on the fly.
Still missing:
ddr2 vdd mod and mch vdd mod,
cooler that says fanless asus design will be replaced by a home made with a fan or just going to add a fan, dunno yet,
maybe add a fan to the southbridge too.

@Vortan.. Nice mods, I would have gone right across pins 3 and 6 of the Richtek chip, less noise
@Hardass... How were the results with the pencil mod... I know a few guys on OCF that did it and they had great results. You might want to put a little nail polish on the pins to hold the pencil lead in.
Something strange happened with mine. I have vcore set at 1.30 in bios and it runs at 1.40 to 1.41. If set at auto in bios it will boot and run at 1.50 to 1.51. Tried removing mod but stays the same.Quote:

why can't you use one of the mB fan connectors instead?? In other words instead of having urber soldering skills just mod a female pin for one of the unused MB fan connectors into one of those points with the correct electrical device and be done with it...Although Proth's idea is reasonable with the pencil mod.
Guys, could you tell about the gain you achieved with the Vdroop,MCH and VCore mod ? I have done similar mods to my P4C800-E, but I did not get higher clocks. Only the VDIMM mod was useful, since I use BH-5 memory.
Also for the VDIMM mod, any gains ? I have 2 1 GB sticks of ballistix PC6400, but I didn't get higher clocks/lower timings by raising the VDIMM above 2.25 V...
I am really interested in your experiences, and also would like to compliment the Stilt for finding all of them !
The Vdroop mod only help when you want the absolute most performance from your ASUS mobo. Example would be if you need 1.55v to run stable @ 4.5GHz, you would have to set Vcore @ 1.65 or so to compensate for the droop down to 1.55 when a load is applied, now 1.65 is kinda dangerous to run 24/7.Quote:

The only comment I have is remember that the actual CPU voltage setting will be about .1v higher than the BIOS so you may want to lower the setting BEFORE you do the mod, or enter the BIOS the very first time you power up.....If you can, measure the resistance between pins 17 and 18 of the chip, with the pencil IN and power OFF, and check that resistance is above 20 ohms. The original resistance between these 2 pins is about 75k and the pencil should bring it down to 30k... Anything below 75k is good, but 5k may be too low. One guy PMd me about reading only about 1.5 ohms, and I recommended he twist the pencil around until it got to over 20k. I guess the graphite in some pencils have a lower resistance than others.

I want to do the droop mod. It says to use a 60k resistor pot on the very first page of this thread (great pic also). It sames to use a 60k pot for the mob, but they arnt available here in Australia, but there were 50k and 100k pots. Which should I use instead.
Secondly, when doing the mod is there a particular gauge wire that I should use (current rating). Ie can I just use thin insulated wire.
Any tips would be great before I mob my new mobo.:toast:

Tried the pencil mod on my P5WD2 Premium and it works great !
Clean and simple.
I only put the sharp edge of the pencil in position and the other pencil end I just put some tape to old it in place.
Doing so I did not break the pencil edge, and It didn't become a permanent mod. ;)
I've got with the pencil vdrop mod an increase in vcore of about 0.9v / 1.0v.
I wonder if diferent pencil's will give diferent values in the voltage increase.
As a curiosity the pencil I'm using is from Microsoft ! :D

my voltages are still really jumpy but they only jump around now at the most 0.02 from 1.40 to 1.42 at the most but it usually is 1.41 ~ 1.42
im running 4.5ghz @ 1.42v with my 955 Extreme.
performance is crap though.. damn it i want my amd64 back or a conroe..
damn asus all to hell for not making this board Conroe compliant.

what will it do ?
a 100k will lower the droop some, and 60k will be pretty good.
hey i was just wonduring if anyone has done a vcore mod for the p5wd2-e? is it the same as the p5wd2 because most of the mods look the same (e.g. vmch, vdim, and vdroop)
im planning some ln2 action eventualy and i have phase right now just thought i could always use some extra voltage.:D
