TCCD DDR600 2.5-3-3-7 twenty four seven: The ultimate settings

Kakaroto has done some more research for you because according to the poll I posted a short time ago in the TCCD DDR600+ guide, it seems DDR600 2.5-3-3-7 is still interesting among the people active in XS and off course the whole world of overclocking. Now 2GB is becoming mainstream for most gamers, TCCD still gives nice overclock adventures. In this guide I will discuss some of the optimization settings you can find in the BIOS. The guide will not be very huge like the previous one, but will only be focused on the BIOS settings to get your TCCD stable at DDR600 2.5-3-3-7. And stable is at least a SPI32M run and some hours of Prime.
Some of the important terms of DQS strobe timing, drive/data strength and DRAM refresh rate (tREF) will be discussed.

As you al know DDR600 2.5-3-3-7 is not an easy task. TCCD does not like tRP 3 at that high speed. DDR600 2.5-4-4-x and 2.5-4-3-x is more reasonable. Even though the performance difference between tRP 4 and 3 is very small, tRP at 3 looks much better. You never can tell if your memory can run DDR600 2.5-3-3-7, so you will have to test step by step and see how your memory reacts when adding some more juice.
What I already can tell you is that what you must have is a TCCD kit which have potential to reach the ultimate DDR600 2.5-3-3-7. I had enough situations where DDR600 2.5-3-3-7 was an impossible task to do, so this guide does not guarantee you a 100% success. If your memory already craps out at 280MHz no matter what voltage and settings, is it not worth to try.

For this guide I used a memory kit of G.Skill PC4400 1GB LE (275MHz 2.5-3-3-7) with TCCD 507 chips. This is a kit that will do at least DDR600 2.5-3-3-7, but needs to be tuned. The week code of the TCCD is quite important. The old 431/437/440 chips are better overclockers then the new 507/517/525. Sad to say, but there is one positive news and that is they love higher voltages more then the old revisions. I remember my old 431 only worked properly at 2.7v!

The system combination you use is very important too! A crappy mainboard won’t bring you to the satisfied results. So make sure you use a descent overclock mainboard. I used a:

- DFI NF4 Ultra-D (BIOS 623)
- Crappy Asus 450Watts PSU (24pins) (~3,21v, 4.91v and 11,64v under load)
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 0517 with TTBT cooler
- Samsung 40GB 5400rpm

I will not use Memtest86++ because it sucks big time when tuning for a 24/7 setup, windows is what matters so programs as SuperPI32M for initial test are going to be used and for long term stability SP2004 (RAM Stress).

STEP 1

The memory is plugged in the orange banks for the most optimal results.

First an initial SuperPI32M @ 275MHz 2.5-3-3-7 2.62v run with optimized settings:

Tcl: 2.5
Trc: 7
Trfc: 14
Trcd: 3
Trrd: 2
Tras: 7
Trp: 3
Twr: 2
Twtr: 2
Trtw: 3
Tref: 133MHz 1.95us (4196)
Twcl: 1

DQS Skew mode: off
DQS Skew: 0

R/W Bypass: 16x
Bypass Max: 7x
Max. Async. Lat.: 8ns
Read Preamble: 5ns
Idle Cycle Limit: 0
Drive strength: 7
Data strength: 2

Vddr: 2.62v

http://img497.imageshack.us/img497/5...test9rb.th.png

I passed a full SPI32M run, duh its PC4400!

STEP 2

Let's increase the MHz a little bit to 290MHz with still the same settings:

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1...iled3zg.th.png

This gives me an instant error when trying SuperPI32M...

STEP 3

What I do now is increasing the voltage to 2.72v (BIOS = 2.7v +0.03v). If you want a long happy TCCD life then 2.72~2.83v is the max. So always try your memory at these voltages and see what happens.

Tcl: 2.5
Trc: 7
Trfc: 14
Trcd: 3
Trrd: 2
Tras: 7
Trp: 3
Twr: 2
Twtr: 2
Trtw: 3
Tref: 133MHz 1.95us (4196)
Twcl: 1

DQS Skew mode: off
DQS Skew: 0

R/W Bypass: 16x
Bypass Max: 7x
Max. Async. Lat.: 8ns
Read Preamble: 5ns
Idle Cycle Limit: 0
Drive strength: 7
Data strength: 2

Vddr: 2.72v

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7...ssed5ue.th.png

As you can see, SuperPI32M is passed after upping the Vddr to 2.72v.

If your memory is not stable try this:

+ DRAM Refresh rate to 200MHz 15.6us (3120)
+ Max. Asyn. Lat to 9ns
+ Idle Cycle Limit to 128~256
+ Drive strength 8
+ Data strength 2

STEP 4

If Step 3 is successfully passed, you can try setting your HTT to 300MHz 2.5-3-3-7. In the screenshot below I set the memory speed to 300MHz with ClockGen. I leaved the other settings the same. Unfortunately it failed.

http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/3...iled4kx.th.png

There are two things you can do now; tweak the settings or increase the Vddr.

+ The optimization settings in STEP 3

Let's try the second option first :)

STEP 5

I increased the voltage to 2.83V in BIOS that is ~2.8v in windows. I leaved every other setting the same.

Tcl: 2.5
Trc: 7
Trfc: 14
Trcd: 3
Trrd: 2
Tras: 7
Trp: 3
Twr: 2
Twtr: 2
Trtw: 3
Tref: 133MHz 1.95us (4196)
Twcl: 1

DQS Skew mode: off
DQS Skew: 0

R/W Bypass: 16x
Bypass Max: 7x
Max. Async. Lat.: 8ns
Read Preamble: 5ns
Idle Cycle Limit: 0
Drive strength: 7
Data strength: 2

Vddr: 2.80v

http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/5...iled5se.th.png

Unfortunately it fails again, bloody hell I give up! As you can see it's a little more stable but not enough. If your memory is stable after increasing to 2.8v, you can leave it at 2.8v or decrease it a little bit so you can tweak the settings.

But there is more to do!

STEP 6 - If STEP 5 is not stable

I tried some optimization with the settings, I took some looser timings. Still I leaved the DQS strobe settings and drive/data strength untouched. I also increased the voltage with 0.03v.

Tcl: 2.5
Trc: 7
Trfc: 14
Trcd: 3
Trrd: 2
Tras: 7
Trp: 3
Twr: 2
Twtr: 2
Trtw: 3
Tref: 200MHz 15.6us (3120)
Twcl: 1

DQS Skew mode: off
DQS Skew: 0

R/W Bypass: 16x
Bypass Max: 7x
Max. Async. Lat.: 9ns
Read Preamble: 5ns
Idle Cycle Limit: 256
Drive strength: 8
Data strength: 3

Vddr: 2.83v

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/969...ssed0gu.th.png

Now SPI32M passed!! Switching banks really helped here. So much difference as you can see.

+ Switch the strongest memory module to the bank close to the memory controller

What I find out is that if you increased the drive strength and voltage the max. async. Lat. cannot be so high. If 9ns does not work so well, try 8ns.

Setting the Idle Cycle Limit to 256 always helps to get more stability. If you have memory is more unstable after setting to 256, leave it at 0 ~ 32.

If your memory is still unstable try this:

+ Set DQS strobe timing to enable with value=128~255 in the BIOS. This will give you more stability but very little. Sometimes this only increases instability on some systems.
+ Try 2.86v and lower the Drive strength to 7 and data strength to 2.
+ Lower the Max. Async. Lat. ~8ns
+ If Idle Cycle limit at 256 does not work properly, set back to 16

STEP 7 - Final testing

Now to prove these ultimate settings work a nice SP2004 Large FTT one hour shot. Some important things about stressing with SP2004; your memory will get hot and your CPU will be 100%. I can recommend a fan or something else that generates some airflow. My SP2004 Large FTT crapped out after some time without a fan. In my previous test I didn't used a fan.
Now with an 80mm fan aimed to the memory:

http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/634...ssed9do.th.png

With a better PSU I could achieve some more, but this PSU from Asus is really the bottom of all. I hoped these settings really helped on other people. I appreciate all comments, tips, results. Enjoy!

Next guides will be DDR2 Conroe platform and AM2!

Nice Guide!

i will try it right now :)

I'll try it once I get my FF replacements :(

Well done....

Sticky by me...:D

Well.. really intersting.. my settings are close to what you have use.. only some are different,
Tref 4708 (166,1.95) - max async + read preamble: 8 - 6..
but for test the OC of my Opty i have like more stay at higher timings (2.5-4-4-7) for the moment.. i keep your guide in a link, and will try all of this soon.. great guides.

Yes, everyone that has tested his TCCD's might have tested these settings. And again, it is very hard to find a kit that have the capability after tuning to run DDR600 2.5-3-3-7. Running 2.5-4-3-7 is easy, almost all TCCD will do that. So I guess that this will help few people with "good" TCCD, but it may bring closer to the DDR600 if not stable.

I also have a feeling that this only applies on newer TCCD's which operate better with a higher voltage.

it is true finding TCCD to do 300mhz 2.5-3-3-x is bloody hard still haven't found a pair to do that repeatably stable in benchies best i can do for my 2x 512MB PC4400LE TCCD 431 is 295mhz 2.5-3-3-x and 300mhz 2.5-4-3-x

http://www.fileshosts.com/DFI/NF4_SL...rpi-32m_tn.jpg

and PC4800FF TCCD 516 @306-310mhz 2.5-4-3-6

http://www.fileshosts.com/DFI/NF4_SL...2m_dual_tn.jpg

great i'll try this on my le's

good one....some interesting comments on relation between MAL and other settings....and DQS :toast:

i must have worst luck with my FF sticks.....310MHz 2.5-4-3-7 1T stable and only 260-263 for 2.5-3-3-7 1T..........i've tried very hard but it's just not cooperating

also interesting comment on the strongest perfoming stick closest to memory controller.....actually happened to me last night.....i couldn't finish even 1M at 310Mhz for some reason and after swapping sticks around 32M was OK.....big difference there

my 440 LE sticks are only good to 280MHz 2.5-3-3-6 1T and 290MHz 2.5-4-3-7 1T so no chance there......

Nice guide. Going to work on my LE's right now :D.

Really nice guide kakaroto. I just have one question: Wouldn't putting the WEAKEST stick in the first dimm slot work better?? Somewhere on the forums, someone did a test where they tested each stick in a different dimm slot, and I think the one closest to the motherboard is the strongest, so putting the weakest mem stick in the strongest dimm slot would make up for its lack of OC?? Just a thought.

Nice guide again Kakaroto!

I would like that you do one another test with the TCCD please, one with a dual core, if the timmings could be the same, wich settings to use..etc!

Thanks!
That is what I mean, put the weakest in the first orange bank (bank2).
And the strongest close to the CPU and that is the second orange bank (bank 4). :)

I don't have a Dual Core atm, sorry man...

Hi,
Thanks for such a nice guide, Kakaroto. I know mine are not TCCD and question ris not related to 300 24x7 but if you can give me some pointers, I will be greatful. I have problem stabalizin' windows with my OCZ Plat 4800 (TCC5, SPD rated 303@2.5-4-4-10) @ 310:mad: with either 8 or 9X multi.
305 is smooth with relaxed settings 24x7

Is there a way to get it stable for windows?? I have tried with setting read Max Async Lat to 9... but no go. Even tried 2.8 but then it craps out faster then anything with SP2004-LargeFFTs. To see if it was time to try rated timings I set it but windows is still not stable.
Thanks.

swesome i will have to try this on my new le's

You mention some different tref settings...

Could you tell us the corrosponding BIOS values? :D

Awsome guide! :toast:

The one closest to the CPU is strongest, I have to put my weak HZ stick in there (slot 4) or I can't do 258MHz. It errors out after 2 passes of test 5 if I have the weak stick in slot 2

Makes me wish I didn't go for the G.Skill HZs. Been wishing I could get 300Mhz it would be perfect for my CPU.

What would be my best bet for 300Mhz with 2x1GB sticks?

I know this sounds weird... but my ram will OC a lot better having the stronger ram in the slot closer to the CPU.... I still don't know why but I can't argue with the results.

You can buy the TEAMGROUP PC4000 with Micron F chips or if you can find one the CRUCIAL BALLISTIX PC4000 with Micron B.

Both of these sets use the -5B die chips, but different revisions. Ballistix in 2x1GB form use "D" revision die chips, in 2x512MB form they use "G" revision die chips. The Teamgroup use "F" revision die chips, which are the newest. Also, for reference, the OCZ EB series of DDR used to use -5B "C" die chips. ;)

Ballistix has been dieing often lately though and crucial is pulling them...

I may have to search for that teamgroup ram in the U.S. and see what I can find.

Tankguys.biz has the entire line of TeamGroup memory.

hmmm, i have some week 437 LE sitting around, when i get my new mobo in, i should try to get 300mhz.. i can do it in memtest now, but not in windows. :slapass:

got my new pair of 4800 1GBFF's (rma replacements)

Passed superPI 32M with settings for 275mhz @2.6v , it failed within 1 minute with 285mhz @2.7v...tried 2.8v but failed 20mins into superPI 32M. I'm just trying to get 285mhz at 2.5-3-3-7 because that matches my max cpu OC.

What should I try to tweak at that point since you just increase volts and passed? Should the recommended tweaks be done one at a time, or all in one shot, or mix and match?

Thanks

they are very sensitive to TREF and MAL/RP from what i've seen...since it responds to voltage you can use 2.9 but it isn't looking like it's gonna get there unless you just have a TREF on there it really doesn't like

try 2.5-4-3-7 1T.....would be interesting how far they go

Maybe an off topice question here, but do the different weeks of ram production make a difference like weeks of a cpu? Slap me if I am asking a Noob question! :slapass:

It depends, some weeks are really good and some are bad. But overall all TCCD are good.

Well I'm still trying to get 284 stable at 2.5-3-3-7. That is my max cpu mhz so I'm not even trying 300 with 2.5-3-3-7.

I have F1-4800DSU2-1GBFF rated 275mhz at 2.5-3-3-7 and 300mhz 2.5-4-4-8. I do not know what TCCD chips they have because of the heatspreaders. Just got em back from gskill rma they claim to be a new pair.

Started off with 275 @2.6v - 2.5-3-3-7...superPI fails instantly.
Switched memory banks - 32M fails after loop 2 (2mins 34sec)
Upped vdimm to 2.7v - 32M completes in 29min 20sec

Try 280 with same settings - 32M completes in 29min 12sec
Try 284 with same settings - 32M fails instantly
Change trcd to 4 - 32M fails instantly
Dont know which settings to change at this point, I've tried the ones listed under the If your memory is not stable try this: area of step 3.

Any suggestions for my memory?

EDIT: 284mhz at 2.8v 32M passed at 28min 32sec
Testing with prime blend test overnight, failed 3 minutes into test.
Testing with memtest in windows, all unused ram...update on sunday morning: rebooted from a bugcheck

@Modulok: If i am correct your memory reacts good by upping the Vddr.

Is 284MHz 2.5-3-3-7 completely stable now for 24/7 use? (SP2004 RAM Stress)

Im using 280x9 now, stable in games and 3dmarks. Need to test overnight with SP2004.

Stable:
-8hrs large test of prime95
-memtest in windows 280x9 overnight with screen saver off
-32M superPI
-trying memtest 284x9 right now

Got Bugchecks when trying memtest in windows, possible it happened when screen saver came on.

Unless you [kakaroto] give me other settings I'll stay at 280.

Thanks!

The settings looks good though :)

well yeah, they are the ones you posted.

If memtest passes today at 284 Ill try sp2004 tonight.

Think it's possible for the screensaver crashing system while memtest is going on, ie the bugchecks I got.

What about the prob witg DFi expert and TCCD 600?

I have try get 2.5-3-3-7, but the max i can stabilise is at first 275-280mhz with 2.5-3-3-7 ( OCZ 4800).. then i need up at 2.5-4-3-8 (1T).. but i know the G-SKILL work differently of OCZ..( i think.. pehraps i make a misstake.)

I try stabilise now at 310 ( or 320)x10 ut really without divider it's impossible I can't have same settings like i have use with my DFI SLI DR...

Some advice in Tref or Data drive strenght?

I have change my board just now.. for SLI expert ( biosE704-2BT).. seems have some issue with TCCD.. strange thing the board is really more stable of the SLI DR... I will give now some try of your settings and take al of this with a lot of considerations.... Thanks..

Edit-..r eading some thread i see you use too SP2004.. seems some week i see ont thing o my OC.. i can stablise an OC at 3150 with SP 2004.. but it's not Super Pi 32M stable after... looking temp during test, i have see the SP2004 should don't really stress the CPU or DDR cause temp don't heat so much as during Prime95, Super Pi 32m, or OCCT... do you think it's better finalise stability with Prime95 ?

Trying to get my week 440 g skill la at 2.5-3-3-7, with no joy so far!
Strange thing though, my pc wont boot with the ram in the opposite slot to the one there in now ,module one in highest orange slot & module 2 in lowest orange slot works fine, swap them over and i get no boot even with clearing cmos??
I get no errors with super pi in windows though and performance seems normal in games and stuff.

Did you mean trcd 3 is hard to get as mine works fine with trp 3, trcd 4 but not the opther way round.

Well memtested for more than 12hr yesterday without errors.

While in windows not really doing anything I got a bsod, irq error and memdump. Not too sure if it was memory related. Tried SP2004 last night, it failed with another bugcheck in system event log. I'll try 280mhz with sp2004 later today.

That is weird indeed, I had that ones with some modules. Just install them in the best way.

Mostly with TCCD tRP 4 to 3 is very hard at DDR600. tRCD 4 to 3 is offen no problem at all.

Does PC3200 OCZ EL Platinum Rev2 v1.1 (TCC5) have any chance running with these settings or even lower (more like 280 HTT)? It seems i have tried everything but I can't get them to run with 2.5-3-3-X at even 252 Mhz (280 HTT with 180 divider)?

I have same problem with my G.Skill F1-3200DSU2-1GBFX 1GB (2x512) PC3200 'TCCD' 2-2-2-5

Cant get stable @ 2,5-3-3-6(7) over 265htt X10. Raising volt didnt help too. Have to use 180 divider then i get 280htt stable with 2,75v. And i have dfi ultra-D with opty 146 :(
I really hoped to get at least 280htt with 1:1

I tried sp2004 with 284 and 280 but it rebooted pc with bugcheck.

Which specific test should I run in sp2004?

I tried prime blend test with 280 at 2.83v and it passed 9hr+.

For RAM I suggest Large FTT's for some hours if that is possible.

If using a dual core do I need to run dual instances (I do for cpu stability, but not sure for memory)?

Also, thanks for the guide I was able to get my Patriot PC4800 XBLK, dual SPi 32M stable at 295 2.5-4-3-7 1T with actual vdimm 2.866 (bios setting 2.92, expert undervolts, but reports 2.87 in bios). I also set my DS, DDS both to auto as I was having trouble with your settings.

Could you explain dqs skew?

Are drive strengths weak when odd and strong when even AND the higher the number the stronger?

Thanks for the guide, my GSkill GBFX can do 290Mhz 2.5-3-3-7 1T 2.7v

now, try to get 300MHz, upping vddr to 2.8v still no go
Any advice?

If upping Vddr does not gain you stability, you can conclude two things:

1. the chips cannot handle DDR600 with your set timings
2. there is no OC headroom left

The main timings are fine and should not be more looser.
Try more DrStr (drivestrength) and DaStr (Datastrength), 8/3 or 7/3.

What you also can test is lowering the DrStr and DaStr and up the vddr to 2.8v.

Try 9ns MAL and 5.5ns RP.

You can try this all. Reply back if this does not solve it ;)

GOAL :300mhz possible ?
@kakaroto : with 2.7v upping MAL to 9ns not help
higher DS/DDS (7/3,8/1,8/2,8/3) no go, lowering DS/DDS ?

I've got a pretty nice set that does DDR620 at 2.5-4-4-7. What are the chances I can do DDR600 at 2.5-3-3-7?

when I use ds/dds 7/2 only passed pi4M eventhough I used vddr 2.8v
using ds/dds 8/3 can pass pi8M, but not for pi16M.

looks like, its about ds/dds that didnt match,
after I try using trcd=4, I can get 316MHz using ds/dds level 5/1
http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/3...128v3au.th.png
I will try trcd=3 again

i got gskillz 4400le tccd's weak 431 and runs 285mhz @ 2.5 3 3 6 and the rest of the bios option's @ auto this will be helping me a lot  :)

i never had tccd's befor only geil one bh5's
kingston ch5 and ch6

I got my G.skill LE 1Gb kit up to DDR600 for testing, got stabile for SuperPi 4M :toast: Hope these memory sticks can handle high voltage ~3.0v, they are TCCD 519, hope that they will be able to get DDR600 SP32M stabile :p:

http://foto.apollo.lv/files/Kashelz/large/181898.jpg

hmmm looks like my replacement FF sticks are candidates for 300Mhz club :D

i just ran them now for the first time and started with stock timings onto this :)

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/353...uperpipass.jpg

and this

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/258...perpitref1.jpg

i use a lot of auto values as you can tell from the tweaker shots....fingers crossed i'll be able to reach 32M 300Mhz :)

dinos22 your memory looks graat, what date code are on your TCCD? Ar they 4xx or 5xx? What voltage do you use? I can get DDR600 2.5-4-3-6 pretty simply, but very hard to get something stabile at DDR600 2.5-3-3-x, maybe my Opteron memcontroler is limiting too! :(

i don't know what date they are

i just tightened the timings a little as well....other questions are all in the screenshot

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1...tertimings.jpg

:( using kakarato's settings in 1st step i cant even pass spi1m :(

im using oc el plat rev2 2x512mb sticks rest of specs are in my profile

i ran it at 275x10 1:1 and cpu voltage at 1.488(1.500 in bios)

I've got oc el plat rev2 2x512 also - I'll give these settings a shot and compare w/ ya cMw
