IHS is off.....and it has great load temps.........i was priming at 3GHz 1.42v and temps were at 31-32C load before it crapped out hehehe....straight reboot

Don't forget it's summer in Sydney so this was not much over ambient temps :)

i probably wouldn't do it if that's the case

sonic tower has an easy mounting system and required the back plate only.........i am running it horizontally as well and have neoprene cut offs on every corner of the CPU to make sure the pressure is even on the core (I HOPE :rolleyes: )

So this cpu came like this from the seller, or did it happen after you crashed on 8m? I've got the IHS off the 154 now and am gonna throw it back under the auto.....maybe I need to run 8m @ a speed that I KNOW it'll crash at so I can get the x15 multi - that would come in real handy with this cpu :p:

the seller only had 10x multiplier.....i know him. He's a friend of mine

i didn't crash on 8M and the unlocking didn't happen after any crashing (or it could have on windows install crash)


ok here is what happened from the moment i got it...........................don't know if it will be any useful but here goes

bit of background..................this CPU spent most of its life under phase and in grease.....hence it was still on mobo and CPU....if you take a close look at my shot you will notice the black neoprene tape thingie there......

anywys so this CPU was transported in the CPU stocket to me via courier

when i got it all out.......i pulled out some clear nail polish and applied it on all the chips around the core....slapped some AS5 on, cut out 4x triangular pieces of the thin neoprene stuff and left it on the edges of the CPU and cranked the TT Sonic tower hard

NOW...........on the first boot...........i got 3xlights........jumped on google and dfi-street link mentioned that it is a RAM related issue so i pulled out the sticks from orange slots and left 1xstick of PC4800FF RAM in the yellow slot furthest away from CPU

BOOTED UP after that............i shut it down and slapped the other stick ....BOOTED UP OK again......went to bios.....loaded optimised defaults...........rebooted into bios....all OK......

went to load windows.......it crashed on me almost at the end of install......(bluescreened)............i pulled out the second stick of RAM and the installed finished after that reboot

once windows was installed i decided i'd give it a bit of a crack b4 i go to bed..................yeap went to change all the settings.....set the RAM to 250MHz and did the RAM timings and the rest.....went to change the multi and it kept going past 10x multi...........i thought it was strange and of course left it on 11x..........went to memtest and lol it was working......FARK ME DEAD :woot: ............went to windows and it was a real deal

it sucked balls in yellow slots

i don't know if i mentioned above but i thought i'd try orange slots again and slapped them in.....only to boot up and run OK.....memory goes a lot higher now but i still have some tweaking to do.....i'll do some stock runs on RAM and add some air over those sticks tonight

it was memtesting OK at PC4800 2.5-4-4-8 1T and 2.5-4-3-7 1T but spat out errors at 2.5-3-3-6 1T.......pretty sure this RAM was benchable past 300MHz with 2.5-3-3-6 1T

there's been a few instances of multis going weird....i know that G.Skill Tech has an opti146 like mine that has 11xmulti unlocked

i don't know why you guys are thinking the unlocking is crash related........i didn't get to do any testing to make it crash and unlock.......it was basically there first time i turned it on and went to bios............

CPU shipped in the mobo to me from another city...that could have something to do with it i donno............i did clear cmos before i started up as well....it's hard to tell what it was

btw that cmos i cleared while the mobo still had power....as in LED's were on but the mobo wasn't running of course....i don't know if that made any difference as i've done that many times before...........i really wish i knew......that way s7 would send me his nice Opti 154 for some unlocking action and 4GHz OCing :D

well i tried one of these

Adaptec 2100S Raid Controller in Raid0 with 2x18GB U160 15K SCSI drives with LVD converter = no difference in SuperPI perfomance from small amount of testing i've done

I was going to test non-hot swap drives and also raid0 sata150 drives but dang....i don't know if i should waste my time after this......there's hardly any action on the drives at all with 32M runs.....these SCSI drives have LED which start going nuts if there is any action.....

You won't see much difference since you're "only" running scsi raid @ u160 speeds. Sata2 raid should easily spank the u160 raid array anyday (try saying that 5 times in a row). Here's a crappy comparison - I've been told that HD Tach isn't a very good prog to test TRUE average read speed, but the results should be relative to their actual values. The Blue line is someone running an unoptimized? u320 raid0 array. The Red line is my Promise Supertrack 8350 PCIe Sata2 Raid controller with 2 x Western Digital Raid Edition 160GB drives in Raid0. I'll try my 2 x 74GB Raptor2's later this week and then hopefully 2 x 146GB Raptor3's when I get them. I was trying to find a better example of SCSI u320 drives in Raid0, but this was the only result in HDTach's database :rolleyes: :

BTW, there's a result from the same SCSI card as you have with 2 drives in RAID0 in the HDTach database as well, but if you thought the numbers were bad for u320, you should see this one

LOL s7e9h3n, you got all fired yup! Now a little about that 11X.... I know this particular chip started life in this board with an 11X but was it that way with the previosu owner? Maybe its a certain board/bios revision deal and these cores. I also have seen several people having phantom unlocked chips, maybe there needs to be a seperate post for JUST people with odd unlocks to enter their mobo's/bios revisions, chips and their steppings.

the chip was "normal" with two previous owners.......when i got it (from day 1) it became an Opti148 :)

your explanation lacked any concrete data that related to SuperPI performance and here is why i say that.....you earlier statement is somewhat incorrect as i am performing better with SCSI even though it is bandwidth starved

The only reason why superpi performance is improved using scsi isn't because of the drives themselves, it's due to the scsi card's ability to help free up cpu usage for floating point calculations.

Is this just randomly happening?

I hope I don't lose my 165's 11x multi :( board can't go high enough at 9x :stick:

so its a bios error that unlocked the cpu? The bios has the power to do that? Either that, or i dont understand correctly

these two kits of OCZ Gold VX PC4000 sticks are freaking me out

newer kit with 11xmulti and 183 divider won't let the sticks boot past startup screens and on the auto reboot and bios check i'll be left with Auto value for multi and max 10x value........................at this point i need to wack in the second older kit in and reset cmos with jumper....wait for 30-60 seconds and voila 11xmulti is back......................i cannot get the multi with newer kit and cmos clear ONLY with older kit :confused: it is strange but it i've done it 4x so far and every time my heart skips a beat so i'm not really wanting to push my luck any more.....i think i'll just stick to TCCD and let it be.........i'm getting some replacement FF sticks next week hopely.....fingers crossed it clocks OK with tight timings

wow...notice any differences in default auto settings besides max multi? And how can you be sure the 11x multi will stick when switching to your FF's?

No cold bug down to -50C (what I boot with).

Have had bad luck with the current hot weather, we have evaporative aircon.... VERY bad for condensation :(

And I'm not getting very good mounts. Put IHS back on and got good results but when I pulled the evap off (at +25C) it took the IHS off and stuck pretty damn firmly to it... so I'll have to do that again, stupid concave IHS :slapass:

Tried any other chips? :D dinos' cpu unlocking service $20 for a ride in the magic board of unlockingness.

hmmmm..wouldnt that be something if it was his board/bios/memory, unlocking these chips???

stranger things have happened, but im sure the likely hood of this happining would be near impossible....

but imagine all the cpu's he would recieve!!!!! "rich" inna month !!!! lol

TCCD RAM i played with so far has been rock solid since the start of adventure

i've used G.Skill LE TCCD 440 & G.Skill FF TCCD and they behaved well at every concivable setting possible..........

these OCZ sticks are a different story........they are not behaving the same way......they are the ones that will go back to 10 and retrieve back to 11 BUT they is a way of doing it....i accidentally figured it out

i am tempted to pull put the Opti146 for Opti165 and try unlock some multies.......i have a strange feeling a mix of these components is creating the multi farkups....MOBO/CPU/RAM

also with my preset settings in bios i tried to boot and hold down the settings with 11xmulti while it was on 10 and it wouldn't work just in case someone asks


holy :banana::banana::banana::banana: i just remembered something...........................when i got the board and CPU from c-buzz i COULD NOT BOOT with FF sticks........after a bit of playing around one stick in top yellow slot booted up fine so i shut it down and put the second stick in the other yellow slot..........>>>>NOW on first attempt this didn't work so i didn't think it would happen>>>HOWEVER it did boot and i proceeded to install windows..............it was all fine UNTIL i got a blue screen on the first loading of windows if i remember correctly............at this point i am pretty sure i changed over to LE sticks which booted fine and i totally gave up on FF in the beginning as i could not get them stable at 2.5-3-3-6.......it was a shocker......................only a week later and some advice from eva2000 helped me unleash that set of FF sticks to 310MHz 2.5-4-3-7 1T.......ANYWAY...the moral of this story is the chip had a max of 10xmulti UNTIL i received it and i only noticed the EXTRA multi once i started playing with RAM (I DID NOT CHECK on first boot)..........I think it was that first RAM trouble that unlocked it straight away

and i don't think i'll ever lose 11xmulti as a cmos clear is getting it back for me :)
