Anyone VOLTMOD a 7800GS yet?

Im in the market for a new AGP card for my PC and I was wondering if anyone here has one and volt modded it yet. This is what I know about the card so far. Please correct me if anything is wrong.

Stock Nvidia 7800GS Specs:

Core: 375 mhz (Can do 480Mhhz at stock volts)
Mem: 1200 mhz (Can do around 1400Mhz at stock volts)
Frame Buffer: 256mb on 256bit interface
ROPs: 8
Pixel Processors: 16 (Fillrate: 6000 MP/s but can only display 3000MP/s)
Texture Processors: 16 (Fillrate: 6000 MT/s)
Z units: 16?
Vertex Units: 5 (468.75 MT/s)

3d Mark 05: 5300 (+/- 300 Depending on system) (@ 375/1200)
3d Mark 05: 6500 (+/- 300 Depending on system) (@ 480/1400)
3d Mark 05: XXXX with volt mod?

This core SHOULD be able to do over 600mhz maybe over 700mhz? I mean the 6800GS had 12 ROPs and it could do over 600 mhz voltmodded. What are your guys opinions on this?

I just found out that EVGA is making a 7800GS clocked at 490 core and 1400 memory. This should take the AGP crown... for now? I wonder how the X1700xt will do against it.

P.S. Its called the Evga 7800gs KO Superclocked.

Geometric delta clock is 0mhz. The card will be detected as 7800GT once you have flashed this bios because nibitor doesn't support the 7800GS yet. I used the 6800 "trick", famous from the 7800GT cards, to get 1.5v available.

Where did you get this info? I would like to see a link. Also I think the 7800GS is a better card then the ageing X850Xt as it has better features.

At stock yes, a X850XT will beat a 7800GS but once you volt mod each im sure the 7800GS has more head room and will take the lead.

... Still im wondering just how well the mythical X1700XT will perform.

i get 7000 stock with my x850

dunno why people say the 7800gs = best agp card.

my x800xt AIW beats the 7800GS's

at 600/600 stock volts I score 7200 roughly on a measly 2.5ghz Mobile barton lol.

If you guy's are right about the 7800gs then i'm very disapointed. Will have to wait until something better is released or get the 850.

This is a classic discussion which comes down to the native differences between ATI and nVidia based video cards.

X850XT is on the 01 ORB frontpag which seem to be enough to disqualify your "raped" as an adequate wording.


Its a matter of taste.

Many review sites claim that the 7800GS is the best AGP card so far because of the various new features it has. Not only that, it scores higher in actual game play then the X850. AND if you are too into 3dmark... you can see that in here too the 7800gs wins yet again if you consider all the '03, '05, and '06 scores as a whole. So yes... OVERALL the 7800GS is a much better card then the X850 and this is not coming from a fanboy since a have both old ATI and Nvidia cards. I just see which card is the best at the moment and buy it, isnt that the logical thing to do?

The only card that I see coming out in the near future that maybe could take the AGP crown from Nvidia is the X1700 series. Its 'supposed' to be 8-1-3-2 with 6 vertex units at around 500mhz, also with 256mb on 256bit. So at those specs the 7800GS would indeed lose out. But ill wait until ATI release it before I decide which one to buy.

tomorrow my 7800gs arrives me and iam too interessted in soldering or bios vmod. i hope it is possible too, to reactivate the piplines, so the gs have then 20 oder 24 pipes ?

and iam more interessted in ne features like HDR and faster SM3.0. i think the 7800gs is really fast, because i read some reviews where the 7800gs runs 500/1400 without any problems. so that alot of more power then 375/1200

Also, may I ask which brand did you buy?

My Dealer give me the information that the 7800GS need 2 days longer from the Distributor :(. So the 2 Cards i ordered comes at weekend. Its one Club3D and an Point of View. The second is for a friend but i can test both before.

Well we've waited this long for a good agp card, whats 2 more days. :toast:

aye my x800xt certainly doens't do sm3.0 games in that mode, but I'm sure ut2007, et:QW and any future game i'll use this card for i nthe enxt year will obivously support sm2.0B and the difference between 3.0 and 2.0b should be nearly none.

I just received my EVGA Super OC 7800GS. Installing with latest driver has given me about 10fps boost over a 6800NU which was OC'd to 415/1150. My only real question is how do I know if the driver properly set the base speeds for 480/1350? I don't see anywhere in the drivers the current Core and Mem speeds like I have with my 6800NU.

Thinking of installing the driver that came with the card to see if it has some tweaking tool on the cd.

In 2. line, left the Chip for CPU Voltage and right for Memory Voltage controlle i mean. But how the Vmods now work i dont know. That for more Specialists.
Important is icon at the last down picture, that means that you dont put your 7800GS into the Garbage pail :) ...no, i dont do it ;)
Testing and overclocking i can do at weekend.

Now i have put the Clockrates Sslider at 500/1400Mhz and it runs Perfect. Thats my Dream Result at the Moment that i wanne reach. 6114 Points in 3DMark05.

Hummm 500/1400 is a nice number but I was expecting higher on 3dmark, around 6700 really. Do you have the latest drivers? Also that speed is at stock volts and fan right? Just out of curiosity can you find out what the fastest it will do with no voltmods, heatsink changes and with no artifacts. After that, voltmodding should be quite interesting. HEHEHE :toast:

with 1024x768 i have with axAA and 4xAF und hi quality 6875 Points ! Without al features 7643 points.

at first i have an modded bios with 1.5v instead of 1.4V. i like the card to much and runs to good, so that the soldering adventures must wait before the power no more reaches ;)

:slobber: Did you try running ati tool to scan for artifacts? Also how about some 3d mark 03 benchmarks. I dont like 01 or 06 because the CPU influences the score too much.

The coolbits have that artifact test that you mean. if that dectect someone, then dont accept the clockrates and that works perfect. with the other benchmarks i carnt run in window to make a "runing" screen. that have more authenticity. the demo need much graphic power.

i dont benchmark very often. if i can run 3dmarks or am3 in window so let me know how.

do you know the tool with make benchmarks with games ?

Does this AGP 7800 have the same core as the PCI Express 7800, if so then is there no way unlock it and gain more pipelines?

Its the same 7800 Core, so the hope is a pipeline mod. but i dont know if it possible on the 7800GT PCI-E Cards ? So we can see some paralles ??

What bios are you using for 1.5v ?
the one from mvktech or do you have another ?

@soul: i backup with nvflash my original bios from the card and then with the tool nibitor i modify the voltage. all you find at mvktech.

Did you select 7800 GT in nibitor to be able to choose the extended voltage table ?
because nibitor doesn't support the 7800GS yet.

If so is your card installed as a 7800GT (in the nvidia control)?

nibitor accept that bios and i can modify it without any problems. in windows it is detect as 7800 GS, like it must

So Zombie, any progress voltmodding it? How about stepping up the core to 1.6v or so. That should maybe give you 30mhz+ on core.

Im sure if you turn the IQ to max plus 8aa/16af and play COD2, F.E.A.R. and other games like that you will see some slowdowns. Hehe can you post some game benchmarks, that is if you feel like it? I interested to see if you can do average over 60fps on Farcry with max IQ,AA and AF. Thats my dream right now, atleast till Crysis comes out. :slobber:

i put Vgpu 1.4V->1.5V but i only can clock from maximum before 514Mhz to 520Mhz after. Not so much. But i have set the Fanspeed from 79% default to 70% and that sound better.

But i found that 1 Chip will be everytime very hot still under 2D and 3D. Can you check yours ? I put the finger on it and after 5s i not will hold it longer. I think arround 60°. But its too on default. I dont check it before i flashed some bioses, so i carnt compare and need you help.

that chip is very cool here not hot at all, i would say 40°c, i can put my finger on it forever.

My bios is flashed to for 1.5v
running at 500/1400

and how clocks you have before ?
how many degrees °C hav you GPU at 2D und 3D ?
what flashtool you use and wath command line ?

i the newest nvflash -5 -6 xxx.rom

same clocks as before but less artifacts, 1.5v didn't do allot for me
i checked the change of the VID in rivatuner and it corresponds with my modded bios so i geuss it worked

49°c idle 61°c at load

i used newest nvflash with -4 -5 -6 parameters

Hey guys. Just stopping by. I have an XFX 7800GS...the OC'ed one. Came 440 and 1300. All I can get with coolbits/atitool is 470 and 1350. I am interested in bios flashing though. From what I hear the pipelines are hardlocked on the chip and there is no chance of unlocking them. My 05 score with OC'ed numbers on my lowly 2600 XP-M OC'ed to 2700MHz is about 6529.

i tested now alot of various settings and voltages in the bios and flashed them. my results are, that at the moment the voltage changing not work !! Equal that i do, the clockrates dont got higher then 514Mhz at my card and no higher temperature. i put upto 1.5V. either its an voltage lock protection or the modifying tools like nibitor dont work right for 7800gs. only fanspeed and some other not so important things you can change.

i think the only way is a soldering vmod. but i dont know them 100%. problem is that the most advanced specialists gone to pci-e and have no more interessed for agp cards. at weekend at first i dismantle the cooler to find the messurepoint of Vgpu to see more.

an info. nibitor 2.7 is out and in the infos was written that it support 7800GS but same negative result. higher voltage bring no higher overclock or temp result

I put a heatsink on that chip on my card, it got very hot on mine too. Not sure if it helped any. I'm getting 7258 3d05 marks at 500/1600, processor bottlenecked.

What ram does the 7800gs use? 1.6ns? 2.0ns?

Can anyone share the memory timings for the 7800gs?

Not a voltmod, but an amperage mod. Goes from 485mhz to 510mhz limitted by cooling. The 3Dmark05 score only increases by 100 point so something is wrong. It could be that the card is just trottleling because of heat or grafical errors, but also that there's a problem with the mod.

I got an evga co superclocked 7800GS (256-A8-N508-AX) and now have it clocked at 500/1600 with stock cooling. I idle at about 42 and load at about 58. The card got me 7200 in 3dmark05, which i think is pretty freaking good. Overclocking anymore however yeilds insignificant results (from my tests) and causes artifacts. I could be wrong on this, just need to do some more testing. Ill leave it here for now though.

I dont have the volt mod bios thingy fyi. Im sorta a noob in the whole volt mod field so i have no idea how to install the new bios or work with soldering whatever to the pcb. Could someone point me in the right direction for installing new bioses on my card? and did the voltage mod bios posted earlier in this thread yeild benefitial results for you guys? Thanks:cool:
