Hey, my p4c800 and x800 blew up so I got a p4gpl-x and 7800gt coming my way on tuesday, just wondering what the boards like, the options, mods, tips etc etc

P4GPL-X are available from www.techfever.co.uk (my favourite) and www.yoyotech.co.uk , also eBay and a couple of other places but more expensive..
do the hippro5 vcca mod, increase your pcie to the max stable to allow for higher fsb clocks.
use a pci, pcie, or ide mass storage device
I had both boards and I have to say they are almost identical. You will need to do vdimm and chipset mods. PGgpl-x gives a bit higher chipset voltage without mods and it lacks 1 memory divider in bios and raid options. Other than that I did not see a difference. Performance is pretty good.

I have a P4GPL-X here, flashed to a P4GD1 bios. But flashing to P4GD1 doens't add you anything usefull. But having only 2 dimms slots and 1 IDE channel sucks

The reason I'm asking is, that I want PCI-e (and make a killer rig). I have a 770, and runs fsb 200 with divider 14 = 2.8 ghz. Is the P4GPL-X able to do that without modding?
multi is not changeable in bios :(

Too bad about the multiplier :(.... I actually hoped that the P4GPL-X would be the one to get (it is rather cheap here in Denmark, approx. 80$). FSB has to be close to 200 to get the maximum out of the ram/cpu.
Usually you boot 167+ on this board and then lower multi to get fsb > 250 in windows :)

I just pulled my p4gd1 so I can compare it to my p4gpl-x. For me the p4gpl-x overclocks better than the p4gd1. Unmodded I can get 250fsb with p4gd1 and 260 with p4gpl-x. If I were to mod one board or the other I'm sure I could go higher. Lawry I would be interested to know how much you can get out of your ballistix on your board. I just got the 2x1gb kit and they run exactly the same as my 2x512 kit.
Yeah Lawry the voltage core problem you describe is the same for me. If I reboot it shows the correct value.
So.......... still not possible to change vcore? How much vcore is standard?

even with 175 fsb and 2-2-2-4-2 I'm still getting good performance for 24/7 mate, but yeh, if I'm going to do some proper benching I will lower multi using EIST and up the fsb much higher (probably to 250 2.5-2-2-5 or 270 2.5-3-3-5 ;) )Quote:

No, I mean load bios setup defaults. I don't really understand. You are changing vcore in bios but it remains the same? What does it show in bios after you save, exit and enter bios again? Old vcore value? What does voltage monitor in bios show?

edit: pretty sure it is anyway, bios and probe still say 1.34v but my temps have increased a lot so I'm pretty sure it has, I need to measure with DMM but it's too late so i will tomorrow :)

But i increased the voltage in bios to 1,7, then rebooted and entered to the bios and then bios was showing vcore 1,428. The default was 1,328 or smth. After that computer didn`t want to boot anymore, even if all the clocks were default and only vcore was higher. Weird...

Have you tried 400 and 533 jumpers on the adapter?
Also when flashing bios this would be advised:
1. Load bios setup defaults
2. flash bios, restart
3. Load bios setup defaults
4. power off, unplug power cable from PSU
5. press power button a few times and then reset cmos
6. plug back your power cable (make sure CMOS jumper is set back otherwise you might kill board)
7. Enter bios and load setup defaults
If after this you can't cahnge vcore then I say either your board is faulty or adapter.
Try P4 cpu if you have it.

I was led to beleive that the p4gpl-x is has an almost identical board layout to the p4gd1 and that the same mods would apply to each. If this is true you should have more success looking for the pg4d1 mod as it's the more popular board.Quote:

Yes, ofcourse all mods work for both boards but I did not need vcore mod. Bios gives you 1.7V, so the actual vcore around 1.78V because of overvolting. You don't need more unless going for WR under LN2! 1.65-1.75 is more than enough on air/water. Chipset mod is more important although most p4gpl-x boards would easily do 260+ without mods. My P4gd1 seemed to do a bit lower without mods.
IMO, if you are still having these vcore changing problems, I'd RMA either board (or maybe adapter). Had no probz with modded adapter and original adapter.

So far I can get 270fsb with my p4gpl-x with no mods. :) I would post a screen shot but when I try it says the file is too large. Only 200mb allowed.
16floz470ml, I will try going to high FSB without mods too, I have 2.3v VCCA and could boot at 270 on my p4c800-e before so I'm thinking I should be able to get high 1:1 with my ballistix
Damn, my dothan 740 died yesterday. I don`t know why? I were just editing a picture in photoshop when I suddenly smelled a weird smell. I unplugged the psu wire immediatly. Smell came from cpu cooler, i thouht, oh, only fan, but when i took off the fan, the heatsink was on the bottob a little bit brown and a very little piece has broken off from the core. It was dead. Voltages were default, cooler was inbox with AS5 paste. CPU clocks were default (1,73).
In a place where a piece came of from the cpu, in the same place on the heatsink was a brown mark.

I've got a P4GPL-X and I can't get my vcore over 1.42V even if I sets it higher in bios ,when I start a program vcore goes down to 1.32V. When I chutdown the program vcore is up again at 1.42V. It's almost like some powersaving feature.??
It's doesn't matter if I use my 479 card or my P4 the vcore is going down anyway.
Have any of you seen this on your MB's?????? (vcore going down under stress)...

I've got a P4 s478 at 3.2G thats been up at 4.1G when I used a abit MB at 1.43V I can't get this high up with this f***ing As__us MB.

but I think that its right because the vcore -fsb are matching my earlier clocking. At a vcore 1.32-1.35 I come up to a fsb at 237-240 and to get up the fsb higer I must increase the vcore.
At a fsb at 253 my cpu needs at least 1.42V.
But I'l try to get time to measure it the right way.

Why is VCore setting in Bios a problem for this board suddenly?
The board I had for a while overvolt'ed quite a bit..tested with both Pentium M or Celeron M (2 of each).
My Celeron M's (350 and 360) didn't respond to higher VCore at all.. they actually wouldn't boot if I set VCore any higher than 1.4.
Is this "VCore-problem" related to newer P4GPL-X boards or a specific (new) Bios-versjon? (I just ordered another P4GPL-X to use with a 740M I have as a spare...To long to wait for Yonah, Merom)... :)

The wiremod is what got me to 2.7, before that i would only get up to about 2.6. It seemed like what ever i set vcore to in the bios it never got any higher. I'm not really happy with my harddrive setup, first i have a PCI raid controller and it would only do about 96 in HD tach. Now im using a PCIe 1x controller. With the same hard drives with the on board RAID0 on my IC7max3 it would do about 178 180. I've had setups set to 16k stripping. Also my x1800xl doesn't overclock well at all.
