High MB temps? Cool your MOSFET`s and SFF R60 chokes

My MB temperature was way too high after installing and overclocking my dual-core CPU. Under full load the MB reported temps. above 70deg.C.

After the mod the temperature never come`s above 60deg.C :)

The 3-phase power solution on the Ultra-D, SLi and SLi-dr get very much workload with the new dual-cores, and with no airflow over them, they quikly rise to +90deg.C That may very well bee just fine for a short period of time, but in the long run I`m not so sure if the mainboard would survive.

I`m too lazy to explain in details how every ting was made, so I let the pictures speak for them self.. This mod is mainly for passive cooled systems and people with watercooling (low airflow systems) If you feel asking me a lot of question`s.. well then your probably not skilled enough to do the mod anyways :D

The chips marked R60 under the zalman BGA-coolers is the HF-noise filtering that is done through SFF Small Form Factor) R60 chokes, they filter out high Fq noise

The sinks on the R60 chokes is stock Zalman BGA-type and the large sink`s on the Mosfet`s is from and old trashed PSU. Had to do some cutting and drilling to make them fit, but the whole mod took me 2 hours.

NEVER SHOULD YOU EVER INSTALL A HEATSINK ON SMD COMPONENTS, EVER!

For now i'm going to assume you either got very lucky or you did not actually put heatsinks on any of the SMD CERAMIC CAPACITORS because that would almost 100% destroy your board and possibly your CPU.

Sorry, my mistake, and yes.. you would shorth/destroy a ceramic cap with an aluminium HS:D

But you say those chips are Mosfet`s and that is not eighter the case :stick:

Why didn't you also apply one of you "homemade" sinks to the top heatsink?..that gets mighty hot as well..

So it IS ok to cool those thingies with mini heatsinks?

i put heatsinks on the r60 chokes and i didnt notice any temp/stability differences. i used thermal tape though, so maybe heat transfer wasnt good?

what did you use to stick the sinks on the r60s?

i havent tried applying a heatsink to the stock heatsink though...it looks like you used some TIM on the area where the added sinks contact the stock sinks though, correct?

I use ordenary "quick"glue/superglue

The point of having sinks on the R60`s is just to remove ANY heat from the MB, they transfer heat quite well from the mainboard, but the chokes them self dont gain any stability by the mod.

But I did! :)

If you study the picture below, you can see the copper heatbridge I use when the 4V jumper to the memory is activated. Right now I`m just running my mem @ 3,1V, so the heatbridge that goes to the advance RAM-cooler is off for right now!

There is a lot of problems that comes in play when you stop the airflow on a OC`ed system. I have done a dozen mods to get everyting right, but for now I`m quite happy :)

Lot`s of small sinking everywhere, based on thermal photos of the DFI @ bigbruin.com (Thanx!)

Right now the sound of the Raptor 150GB killing my ears :( (but I guess I`m a litle sensitive to noise..heh)

The whole project took quite some time to finish, but the result is prisless. Mucho custom parts I`m tellin`ya. The system OC quite hard while maintaining almost noisless. My dual-core opty 165 can run at 2625MHz (8 x 325HTT) without any problems. But at this speed the workload on the PSU-fan get`s a litle heavy. So normally I run at 2400MHz, and at that speed the 120mm PSU fan rotate @1000rpm (idle), dual prime and the fan rises to aprox. 1500rpm, but the system is not noisy even at that speed :toast:

The pics are taken with my shi**y HP cam, I hate it, all 300gram`s of it, but it takes good macro-photos anyways:) Only paid 120$ for it one year ago

Yes, done it before and did it with ease :toast: My OCZ VX did not get hotter than 35deg.C running @3,7V

Nice setup dude, I'd suggest getting some foam for your case to deaden the sound, maybe enclose your raptor in it's own little box in the case?

I`m buildig a new passive coolingsystem based on water. So the raptor will be enclosed in a box with watercooling.

those passive alu heatsinks dont wiegh anything. ive used them on ram before, but in a very different fashion.

im actually plannin a buncha mods like this. finally found the microcool mini sinks to sink ALL chokes, the pwm area and the various IC's that get hot (also directed by the thermal images of the sli-d boards)

good work there man, now im just trying to find a VERY cool chipset solution that will allow my big vid cards to work installed in SLi

do chokes even create heat? you sure they arent being heated by surrounding components? in which case adding hs's to them would heat them up moreso.

Just got my mobo back from RMA so it's getting set up for phase and I decided I'd put some heatsinks on the hotspots from the thermal images on bigbruin. Here's the result:
