AM2 to use DDR3?

After reading this thread I went off and did some research....

AMD did not comment.

What is interesting is that AMD has stated that they expect socket AM2 to last at least a few years as thier primary Desktop socket.

However unless AM2 uses FB-DIMM I very much doubt we will see even DDR3 compatibility with AM2 sockets.

Besides I believe that the socket-F? for Opterons is much more likely to use FB-DIMM.

FB-DIMM is for servers only. Why would you want fully buffered ram in your PC ? Also FB-DIMM has HUGE latencies, but can draw 17GB/s BW with quad channel.
This agreement between AMD and RAMBUS was signed way back in past - we had thread about that here :) And since RAMBUS has the Rights to everything that`s intersections with DDR ANY company that wanna use them MUST have an agreement with RAMBUS.

Guys I can tell you right now that AM2 uses DDR2. What you are seeing is the joint effort between AMD and Rambus for FBDimm support on S1207 Opterons and nothing more.

amd is going to use DDR3 yes but in 2008 as they interactive road map says for this year we have virtualization and ddr2 for 2007 we have lvl 3 cache and HTT 3.0 and for 2008 we have ddr3

^ That's the first I heard of that.

AFAIK I thought since AM2 is coming pretty quick here, it's obviously DDR2...Since I don't believe DDR3 will be in production by it's release. I thought then AMD was going to a 65nm shrink, then either 45nm/4 core (whichever first), then K8L (Which I presume to be the DDR3 socket A64) and then continue the shrinking process to 32nm, 22nm and somewhere in there introduce more multicores that will have different primary uses per core (floating point instructions etc).

I think the fact is that they are entering into the contract since Rambus seems to own damn near every memory tech and they want to prepared for now and the future, as it seems to be DDR3 and XDR will be, and also not be sued for patent infringement, as Rambus certainly seems to enjoy hawling all companies using their tech without paying royalties into court.

And I assume Intel and AMD are going to pull DDR3 out of their behinds and supply the whole market with it. :slapass:

All that while Samsung, Infineon and other memory chips makers continue to research and develop DDR3 to sample in late 2006?

AMD will use DDR2 this year (on socket AM2, or whatever it's finally called).
Intel is using DDR2, they are about to give support for Conroe.... does it look as "pulling out of DDR2"? No.

DDR3 is still a paper product.

I'm closing this thread seeing that there is little reason to believe that DDR3 is coming anytime soon.
