DFI Expert Special Edition to be released.

I've just been told that there's going to be a special DFI NF4 Expert edtion to be released.

It is said that the special edition will be released with a limited amount of quantity. AFAIK, DFI has started research for estimated demand of supply regarding the new edition.

Changes include better packaging(more cables, etc), changes in capacitors, and a bit more regarding hardware. For the capacitors, they're going to be changed to solid capacitors. I'm expecting the new special edition to provide somewhat better OC ability from those minor changes in hardware. Though price, of course should be more expensive than the normal Expert edition.

Bellow are some pics of the new package.
(There might be some changes in the future, not 100% sure about this.)

I heard that there will be new Expert version, what I thought is SLI32, but seesm...I am wrong :D

I wont be suprised if this board will have probloms. Looks like Dfi might have rushed Wu again. Lets just wait and see how these boards really are.I hate how the price of Dfi's boards oh sky rocketing :( :nono:

I too am not that intersted in packaging, etc either. lol :D My experience with the normal expert has been great so far, and for those Xtreme Ocers out there, I think the new edition will provide better OC. ^^

count me too, for some deluxe versions, I even didn't open the package for cables, I/O panel....etc, just take the MB out the box, hurry setting it up, install windows, benching....gaming..... :D

is there ANY estimate on when this will be released? I just ordered the standard Expert yesterday, but I'll return it if the other one is due out anytime this month... any idea?

I found out a month ago that i got some front panel for my sli-dr when my friend asked why i dont use it..

ASUS keeps getting better.... DFI should start rolling in a better manner.

oh dear, i would hate to know the premium for a box i wouldnt ever use...

Is it just me of does the packaging look it has a little bit of a coffin motif going on? :D Given the reputation (deserved or not) it seems inappropriate. Does the on-board mini speaker play "Taps" and a disclaimer from the DFI legal department every time an FX CPU is killed by "user error"? :rolleyes: BTW - My DFI Expert is still on my bench. Playing and tweaking - so far just good fun.

The ASUS A8N32-SLi Deluxe matches some of those requirements.

Already bought the regular expert, a few changes are not going to make me want to switch. Who cares about the packaging anyway, we are not using it for our rigs for chrissake

Isnt Venus the core of most Opterons?? I think this board will support oficialy opterons... :slap:

So instead of just frying your CPU... it'll also fry our video cards too?

In a way I do... I dislike all the junk they've been including with motherboards lately. More packaging means more money. The thing looks like a friggen jewelry box anyways.. :-/

Nope. No way am I going to shell out my hard earned $ for useless packaging like that.

As others have said, DFI should concentrate more on things that matter to an overclocking enthusiast like 8-phase regulation, chipset cooling, and 16x/16x SLI. Although all solid state caps will be nice. :clap:

man this really blows... I literally just bought a "standard" DFI expert yesterday. Now I find out about this POS. Arggh.. even if this board is mostly "fluff" the improved caps will surely be nice and I guess the price of the "regular" expert will probably drop down to more reasonable levels.

hey, atleast the box makes a nice mobo stand.. thast what I use motheboard boxes for. I could relaly use a new strong one as this K8N Neo2 box isnt holding up too well after a year.

Hmmmm...I'm not impressed either.

As for some of the suggested improvements mentioned above, the current Expert already addresses a few of them...such as having 2 usable PCI slots when both PCI-E slots are filled, and removing any interference between the chipset fan and a video card. The current Expert handles that nicely.

16 x 16 is a waste time and energy. By the time any video card/cpu combinations can take advantage of 16 x16, NF5 will be out anyways.

As for chipset and PWM temps....who cares. The temps seen on current boards rarely effect overclocking anyways. Besides, I always mod these areas myself.

On the up side, I like the idea of solid caps and better hardware in general. I'm just not sure we'll see any improvement in overclocks. Right now the limiting factor is the CPU. 50,000 mhz HTT doesn't do squat.

Who is the target buyer? Certainly not the hardcore clocker who couldn't care less about a fancy box. And certainly not the budget conscious clocker who doesn't want to pay for fancy packaging.

Limited run products are good ideas if they promote company image, offer halo effect to other products, or step into new markets. Unfortunately, this ltd expert does none of these things.

Nope...this is a limited run waste of time IMO. Of course, more info could come out that changes this....but I doubt it.

too much fluff ditch the box and cables for some better tech.

True enough, and if they ditched the nasty fluorescent orange and yellow crud all over the place it would be perfect. Black board with white slots would look sweet.

don't need special package, oem packaging is fine. when i buy a new board i open box plug board into existing hardware, why do i want to change every single cable and sticker and anything else. i will never use a front i/o panel box thing and resent paying for it, i resent paying for 15 different cables when every board i've bought in the last 4 years had the same, i have boxes and boxes packed with useless crap like that. i don't need extra pci brackets for usb ports, hell i don't need 1 pci slot let alone 3.

give me a board, with great power, 4 sata ports(maybe 8, use sil image sata 2 chip as its clearly faster than nf4's piss poor hdd performance), put the chipset somewhere out of the way, or design a heatsink that extends away from gfx slots and then has a lotta fin surface area. crappy crappy crappy chipset sinks with bugger all surface area and a high speed fan are useless. put cooling wheres its needed.

i will happily pay the extra $5 for better caps, $5 for better heatsinks and $5 extra to not skimp on other crap, i DO NOT EVER want to pay the $0.50 for 2 extra usb brackets, the $1.00 for 3 rounded ide cables, the $2 for a pretty box with a cartoon semi clad girl on a hologram effect box and the other random increases in cost for stuff no one, i really mean no one uses at all.

I have noticed that the IDE performance on Nforce boards ( ALL of them afaik) sux also.

Maybe if Wu teams up with his old buddies at Abit (you know some of those soon to be jobless engineers), IC7 like design and quality would show up at DFI. A genius writing bios and design and monkies engineered the board. No wonder it has problems. Great opportunity for DFI to snap up some of those real engineers at Abit so instead of making coffin jokes...urrr comments about the box, we can make some trophy case...comments.

No cables or games inside, nothing but a Driver CD if needed. THAT would be the essence of a hardcore product.

I have WAY too much stuff to fit in that thing. lol. I use clear storage totes for all my extra stuff.. that way i can see which tote to grab. Selling an OCing ethusiasts mobo in a fancy leather box is sort of silly... Now, a clear plexiglass container would be cool. j/k heh ;)

What a POS. Are you supposed to disassemble the whole system the the day/night is over and it's time for bed? What are they thinking? Instead of a box, give us a case instead! I mean a small one, only with space for mobo, PSU, 1xCD and 2xHD, nothing more. There are so many real cases out there if you want that. What about compact ATX cases? I'm talking about a case that have two functions:
1 - It's small, light and got a handle. Perfect for a -LANPARTY- Do they know what that is? :stick:
2 - When that cover is off you pretty much get a mobo tray with CD and HD's under the mobo and the PSU on one side of the mobo, almost like having a mobo on a box that many of us does. Easy to access everything, and easy to snap the cover on when moving it, all in aluminium of course.

Just give us something that at least some of us want, and not only some crap we have to pay for just to get the best mobo.

Is there any wonder they can't get things right before inflicting them on us? Now see how their minds work, god help us all because DFI doesn't know how to.

From reading all this, it is funny how DFI went from the talk of the town to the...talk down of the town, even though a lot of people still owns the board and lots still recommend them to first time users.

Hmm I like the box but I would rather that it include handpicked ram that is personally tested by Oskar Wu to do 280 2,2,2,5 timings:) Now that would mak it a special edition worth having. Other wise why cant they just take the infinity board make it red and load it with ultra high quality caps and bios settings?

Otherwise, I cant see that solid caps are gonna give much more performance that the already high quality caps that are onboard the Expert as it stands. I just got an SLI-DR for Christmas, sold it and got the Expert for the added hardware changes and layout. Unless a dancing girl in red suspenders pops outta the Special Edition's box when ya open it, I am not changing boards again based on the changes listed in the first post. But hey, who knows what real improvements may show up. Frankly I would like to see them start work on a new board all together.

Leather lunchbox with a coffin styling is what I feel about that.

I don't give a jack :banana::banana::banana::banana: about any of the stupid crap they include in the package. I want my money spent on board components, not stupid brackets, pretty cables and leather coffins

Pretty obvious that the (empty) box isn't being received to well here.
But it's the Marketing Dept that designs the packaging (and god knows how many have voiced their distaste for the current "lanboy" packaging).

Other than solid-state caps very little seems to be known about the board.
Very hard to make a meaningful performance comment without knowing more.

These all look like very interesting possible enhancements to me. Seems to me that DFI gets bashed if they DON'T produce a V2 of the Expert and bashed if they DO make one. DFI may have slipped and fallen but they are certainly not out of the race yet. It may be the board that Oskar wanted to make all along.

Sure would be nice if some manufacturer produced a mobo that accurately displayed/read the voltage and temps on the board as well as the other OCing goodies.

What's solid state caps?

It looks to me as if DFI just wants you to install your pc into the case they ship it in. I guess that way it will make RMA easier for people as they dont have to pack it back in the box.

The typical capacitor is more or less 2 plates, with a small seperation, with a liguid embedded. A solid state capacitor is just that, its a solid.

Typically a solid state capacitor has near zero current/voltage leakage, and makes an even better filter for electronic circuits as it opposes AC signal far better than standard capacitors.

Devote any and all time to an AMD AM2 solution, make it a flawless board upon release.

Use solid capacitators, passive or heatpiped heatsink cooling (depending on whether chipset runs hot like nf4). Sell it like the current Lanparty (SLI-D & SLI-DR), it is doing well. Offer an additional model with 8 SATA, and all the extra stuff (SLI-DR) to compete with whatever extra crap Asus is bundling. Make it perfect the first time, with dual slot graphics, grouped power circuitry (like on the ati reference board), along with 8phase power. Don't even require an Expert or Expert SE edition. DFI has several months until am2 and are surely developing it right this instant, I say don't bother with this, just make am2 perfect.

Or better yet, split the design team. Have one group do a i965 (16x16 intel chipset, supports Conroe). DFI seems to have dropped out of the intel race entirely, don't let that happen, just make that perfect board for i965, cause unlike the current intel stuff, Conroe will be here for a while.

Jumping OT. Besides requiring new ram and cpu's and mobo's that will be bugged out with the transiition to 64bit os and DRM what will it bring us?

I'm not excactly warming up to the idea of what's coming. You are happy with the prospect of Big Brother built into every device? :(

It won't even be 2006 over before intel announces moving on past ddr2. AMD will have a short run with ddr2 at the desktop level imo. Intel is going to be way to strong in q1 2007 so devoting some resources to an intel solution is most likely on DFI's list.

Got some more info regarding the new Expert.

Bellow are some changes I know of.

1. It will be a DFI 25th year anniversary limited edtion. Only 1000 mobos are going to be made.
2. 100% Japanese ESR sold Capacitors
3. HD Supported newly designed Karayan sound module
4. 8 UV SATA/Power cables included
5. New box with lanparty sticker, and a badge. lol

Every time I hear "25th Anniversary" I think so-so performance and way over priced. Don't think I have been wrong yet.

I could see this board being a better overclocker and the xtreme guys could probably get a little extra with the better caps. And with only 1000 maybe a higher level of QC. I guess we'll see...

If the major Changes are to the Caps.. it definately is not something I would buy.. I can change out the Damn caps on my own..
and I would love to see a performance Review on an impartial Site before I even reach for my wallet

2. Doesnt sound like a very big deal...the current expert using 100% japanese capacitors anyway...
3. This is nice but many people use pci sound cards like the x-fi
4. 8 UV sata/power cables is nice but not everyone needs/uses that many and it is also not too big of a deal.
5. No one has ever bought a board for this reason

Sure it is nice because the people looking to buy an eXpert can go for the limited edition if they have a chance to get their hands on one and they will ofc use it as bragging rights aswell. However the special edition doesnt have enough perks for someone to sell their current expert in hopes of getting one

this is the only thing that makes it different to current board and it will only benefit tweakers with high clocking RAM that can gain another 3,4,5MHz out of it......not for the common layman

If the original Expert can be improved with better caps and stuff....why wasn't it done in the first place??
