I've done this before, but it's been awhile and I forget what I did. So rather having to go through remounting billions of times. What does one alter in the mount of a Swiftech Storm if their cpu has the IHS removed? Some washer? Some whatever? I just need to know, thanks. ;)
um.. nothing.. it will mount exactly the same assuimng that the screw doesnt go too far back through the packplate.
Incorrect. Mounting it the standard way will give it absolutely zero contact.
I don't own one, but I have read alot of posts about em. I guess you can shave/sand the top of the ziff and use some padding.

Sorry, max, but I'm affraid you're forgeting the washer. If one uses the default washer, there would be no contact, as EnJoY said.
Of course the only problem is the washer, without washer there would be no difference at all.
So EnJoY, you can use either no washers, or use 3 of the Athlon XP washers on each side. If you put those 3 washers on top of the IHS (with the IHS bottom up) and compare the height with the washer of the A64, you'll see that they have the exact same height.
If you want to increase the mouting pressure beyond the AMD default, you either use only 2 washers or none.
If you use the 3 washers you can tighten the screws all the way, until you can't turn them anymore, without risk to crush the core. I had it like that.
Now I removed one washer to get even better contact, but I can't tighten the screws until the end.
um if you look at the pics I am posting right here, you will see that the the mounting pressure is not determined by any washers, but rather how far the screw goes in before it meets up with the spring to be compressed. I am not sure how you guys are mounting it, but with the stock A64 mounting hardware from Swifty, this is what I did.

I imagined that you mounted the block like you did.
But following Swiftech's instructions (novices usually do that :p: ) you should keep the motherboards default retention bracket in place, put a washer between the bracket and the block and then the spring and screw. In that way you don't risk... well... to crush the IHS :confused:
Anyway, you apply the mounting pressure by AMD specs. If you remove the IHS and try to mount the block inthe exact same way, the block will touch the washer before touching the core.
As I said before, or you remove the washer (and then the retention bracket being in place or not is irrelevant, I keep it not to loose track of it), or you change the A64 washer by the 3 AXP washers. Using the 3 washers there is no risk to crush the naked core and an even mounting is semi-garanteed (as garanteed as the thins involved are flat-same height). But we loose that 1 or 2C of the extra mounting pressure.
I mounted my Storm on my IHSless chip the same exact way max posted the picture, On the Neo2 and my DFI, never ran into a problem . :)
I ran my 3400 Newark (IHSless stock) without problems on my DFI 250gb. No issues at all. Just be careful. ;)

amrgb, I dont know why you would leave the retention braket on, but if you remove it, like I generally suggest to anyone who asks (maybe I should write a Storm mounting guide), the same method for IHS and non IHS works. I have a non IHS cpu I gave to a friend. If he still has it I will try the same mounting procedure just to clarify that there are no issues with the mounting method i showed.

Reverse the screws and screw them in from the rear of the board through the backplate. Use wingnuts to tighten down the block. But be gentle, only needs a couple of turns of the wingnuts to get a snug mount. go into bios and check temps and adjust wingnuts alternately 1/4 turn at a time to.........doesn't need much adjusting. Did it this way on my naked X2 4800+ running @ 2750Mhz with 1.375V load dual prime temp 38/40C in ambient temps of 30C.

Success! IHS removal was a success and storm is installed. Temps under load @ 3.0ghz with 1.6v is 38c (prime max heat, large ftts)! That's a 10c drop in load temps! :toast:
(p.s. used max's method of storm installation.)
Despite onboard sensors being rather bogus, congrats Enjoy. Glad it all worked out for you.

I just installed my Storm Rev 2 on my Opty with the IHS removed. I could not get solid contact on the core without drilling two holes in the back of my motherboard tray. Without the holes, the screws couldn't go farther back without 'bowing' the motherboard up around the CPU socket.
If I had not done so, I would have had to put the screws up from underneath and used a wingnut to tighten them down or used shorter screws. I didn't want to do either so I pulled out my drill. :D
The pics in this thread are not viewable any longer so I don't know what I did differently from Maxx but I wanted to add my experience in case anyone else needs help from this thread.
Guys Its much easier to flip the screws and use a 6/32nd nut and two of the washers and 6/32nd wingnuts. to secure the storm to a naked core.
This is how I mounted mine, and it works wonderfully.

I dont use the big white washer that goes under the top bracket. I dont get contact if I do.
do you still use the bracket??
Yeah I used everything that it came with except those little white washers that go between the LOTES bracket and the MB.
I still have IHS on my 170 but removed the bracket and just screwed the storm down with the recommended hardware...why keep using the bracket?
I dont know, I just followed what it said, never had any issues until I took the IHS off and had to remove the white washers. Its probably so you dont crush the core, plus it lines it up correctly.

I had to leave the white washers out as well. One thing I did notice just recently though is the screws do bottom out against the mobo tray, but the block is on really tight at that point.
Funny that you mention that...after I put the block on and was putting the motherboard tray back in, I noticed that my board was bowing upwards as a result of putting the screws down too tight. The backplate was being pulled up on either side like a 'C'. :eek:Quote:
