Golden FX-57 dead - another DFI Expert victim?

Really bad news, my golden FX-57 (that do more than 3.900mhz benchable) just die after a few hours on the new DFI Expert...

There are any physical damage, but the cpu is really dead test it on another 3 boards, just don't boot and turns board down.

I don't think I ever get such great overclocker/non codbuged CPU like this ..this is really frustrating

It is not the first time that happend (remember OPB's.) my previous FX-57 run on the SLI-DR for many months on phase without any issue..

So may advise is : for now stay way from the DFI Expert if do serious overclocker ..or at least do not put valuable and precious CPU's on it..

I hope DFI can give a convincing explanation about this ..

Awwwww man I fel for ya I really do, 'luckily' my board just blew up.

I wonder what the heck is going on right now.

Does anyone here ahve any direct contact with DFI?

Can someone please look into this - the best thing DFI could (should) do right now is IDENTIFY AND ADMIT THE PROBLEM - re-call all the boards and replace with revised boards FREE OF CHARGE or offer refunds or non-EXPERT boards as replacments.

Mav

OPB had a pre-release board. I don't think there have been another CPU kill with a retail Expert. The other(s?) were with the RD200 board.

Pedro, can you take a DMM and measure what voltage the Expert delivers to your CPU socket?

Post piccies of where we can do this please - also is it normal for the voltage reading in the BIOS to the vcore fluctuate?

I thought this 4-phase distribution system was supposed to get rid of all teh instabilities?

Mav

bad new i was goin to buy one this weekend

Sorry for your loss Pedro..
My RDX200 which have the same power mosfets like Xpert also took my 0442 FX55 claw with it:(

sorry for your loss (that baby was exteme oc, and expensive one ).
like dumo mention, the cpu R.I.P issue was in the pre board, i try 2 experts and no such issue .
even do, that is wird coincidence, cpu work great, and then new board and boom cpu die :lsfight:

Sorry to hear you loss! Something is really odd with those DFI boards lately - I lost 2 chips on an RDX200-DR and now all xpets deaths too.

Man this was one sweet CPU you guys had!

well, I guess I know what I won't be getting until these issues are cleared up.

WHAAAAA?
You too?

:( i bought one today

It`s like russian roulette :(
hope my cpu will get an empty chamber :D

Sorry to hear that Pedro :(

I think we know now why these boards we're delayed so long, and they still have expensive bugs/defects.

Thats horrible. Guys are losing expensive CPUs and not cheap mobos here...are DFI gonna compensate them for what looks to be their poor attention to detail?

RDX and Expert share the same power reg. and mosfets and jumperless 4V..

That blows man. A irreplaceable gem taken in it's prime. :slapass:

DFI has some splanin' to do....

Hexspert is more like it. :(

At least Any Dfi rep should fast say anything about all these deaths .
I bought a dfi xpert too it arrives tomorrow but i´m afraid of killing my 3ghz stock cooling opty.

:(

Sinto pela tua perda. La se vao novos recordes portugueses... por pouco tempo, espero.

May be a concidence, but I have the cpu on the old SLI-DR on the same exact conditions no problem at all
Change to the Expert to have more space for the vid cards on SLI than the cpu die..
May be a coincidence ..but I will not risk again to put expensive cpus on the expert until these conicidences are plainly explained ..

what I found out on the RDX is that when you switch CPUs on the RDX board - no matter what vocre you set in the CPU VID CONTROL - the first boot into Windows will be @ 1.55V plus whatever CPU VID SPECIAL CONTROL is set to.

If for example you set 1.3V + 112% you get way over 1.7V in actual voltage.

If you had just switched CPUs on the Expert - if I understand your last post correctly maybe there is a correlation between the Expert and the RDX.

I have a EXpert - and will look if there is something similar like that

EDIT - Expert does not have this problem

Mike, just for clarity on my part:

Does that mean if i buy that motherboard and a brand new CPU, build a system and boot up, that my warranty on CPU is automatically voided because the motherboard supplies it with 1.55V?

Pedro,

What VDIMM and VCORE were you running when the CPU died, it might be one of the common causes of a Rev E die suddly dieing due to the mem controller getting burned by High VDIMM and Low VCORE...

A sad day it is, I was really hoping to see you guys molest the orb with your Cascade and cards. :(

Man, this makes me nervous. I have a FX 57 and a sweet clockin 4600 x2 both riding on a pair of these boards:hm: I'd like to think its really not a big deal cause there are always CPU deaths when your pushing the limits....and a lot have guys have moved to the expert, so I'd figure I'd see this. But, I'm going to sacrifice a chicken in the backyard just to be safe:)

Sorry for the loss Pedro. It sucks for sure!

Lol - good question - let's ask AMD what they think. It's only on the RDX - I imagine DFI will quietly fix this with the next bios release.

Geez! Sorry for your loss, Pedro! :( :( What's up with DFI lately? Are the caps bad? Possibly the 4v? I think a poll should be posted to see how many people have gotten such luck. I'll go do that now...

this is crazy.....sorry for your lost man!

His was a 0530APMW ;)

BTW, OPB's cpu deaths may not have necessarily been caused by a fault of the Expert. Instead, there are other factors which played a part in the deaths - ones which I won't go into until OPB settles up with DFI about the processors ;)

@ Pedro, what revision board do you have?

I have a Venice 3000+ I'm saving for this board.:chicken:

Wake up DFI.......You have to announce something either warning or solutions.....Let us know are these sotware/hardware failure or user error....

DFI-street is so worthless... so... so... so... worthless.

Sorry for your loss Pedro, that CPU was irreplaceable :fact:

I have an excellent 146 in my Expert ATM and am getting nervours

I was going to plonk my beautiful X2 in this board but maybe not now as none of the newer steppings come even close if it gets fried :(

I want an explanation from DFI :stick:

this is a bfp, the cpu was exelent, rare, expensive...

just working normaly, reboot, no work, 3 leds.
get cpu out, get cpu in again, boot, ok,
enter the bios, load normal config we have used before, reboot to safe bios configs, puff, no more cpu, this is not normal, cpu fisicaly is perfect, but didnt work, shut down all boards 1s after turn on

that 0530 with cold bug only near -100 was to mutch precious to die.....

Sorry to hear, Pedro.
Too bad DFI :slapass:

I think you guys should stay away from DFI for a while, and wait for their SLIX16 MB.

i don't think that you right.
the expert is a very nice one, and we don't know for sure if that is the reason that cpus are die.
i can tell you that my expert work super fine.

Sorry to hear about that pedro,
My expert is working fine. 1.65 vcore primed for 12 hours + running 24/7. Not only are the voltages pretty precise but my cpu is not dead.

After the whole Ultra cold boot/Ram death fiasco, nothing surprises me now.

No matter how many deaths there are, DFI wont admit the problem, users that dont experience it call everyone else a noob

There is an obdvious conflict with both RDX/Expert boards and
hopefully newer revisions of the board might finally fix the power design
they both share.

No signs pf physical damage, but I'd say with 99.99% confidence that your memory controller on your cpu got fried.....

You running that cpu that high of an overclock and you don't think that maybe, just maybe, it's the cpu that gave out and nothing wrong with the board? My first though was that you pushed the fx too high and it just had enough after a while. That's the risk of overclocking.

I really liked that cpu :(
And to XGMan, I don't think it's the risk of overclocking, it just happens to often on those new DFI boards, and it isn't a blame of the 0,09um process as Dumo's FX55 Clawhammer died on those boards too

Same with the coldboot/death on the Ultra but what response did DFI give?

Still to this day ppl without the problem are convinced its ALWAYS user error.

My personal view is DFI put a very large premium on their Boards because of the R&D into making (great) clocking board, but it seems that the same care is NOT put into other area's.

Just to clarify : Before put it on the Expert I run the CPU with the same EXACT conditions (Cooling, VCore, VMem, etc..) in the SLI DR without any issues - put it on the DFI and die after a few hours ..
I have other FX runnig at around 3.500mhz on the SLI-DR for 6 months (at least 12hours /day) under phase without any issues..

I'd still like to know what voltages you had.

Did you measure Vcore with a DMM?

Have you spoken to DFI about this?

Threads like this actually drive manufacturers away from enthusiasts, I would seriously consider talking to DFI and seeing if your board actually does have issues and not creating mass panic on a forum without actually knowing what killed the CPU.

For the record I have killed a Dothan just by swapping it to a know good board in the past 2 weeks, did the board kill it...I have no idea, but i can tell you there is nothing wrong with the P4c800E as its running another Dothan just fine now.

you right tony. that is the big problem.

Well said. I think everyone is going into hysteria....yet again. It always happens with the top mobo when everyone serious about overclocking moves to it. If there was an inherent problem chips would be dropping dead everywhere. Instead, we have a handful of deaths at most. OPB can't be blamed on the board. And Pedro's situation is still unknown. CPUs do die when you push them hard enough.

Given everyone who has tried the Expert and is running it right now, there aren't enough reports of CPU death to formulate any credible trend.

I remember the old days of overclocking when individuals actually knew they were at risk and accepted the consequences. Now days, at the very first sign of a hiccup while running the system 100000% out of spec, and everyone blames the hardware. Man, folks have become spoiled.

I EXPECT hardware to die ! :D

In fact if I don't kill something from time to time I feel like I'm not pushing things far enough.

EXACTLY!

No one likes to have hardware go tits up, but it happens when you push the envelope. I still feel bad for Pedro to lose such a nice chip. But, when your into this hobby, hardware dies sometimes.

well, think back to the previous DFI boards that killed memory. people said that was user error until DFI finally admitted fault. how long were those users called stupid or noobs?

this is just a repeat of a bad movie. too bad a lot of people dont remember watching it happen the first time

Not really. I've been around OCing and dying hardware since 1999 and I don't forget anything. The real answer is that I come from a backgorund where we used to solder the cache bridges on our $800 chips with magnifiying glasses and replaced clockgen chips on our mobos. Back then, you had to work for what you wanted with hard mods. None of this BIOS adjustable everything existed. Overclocking "features" or not, overclocking is overclocking and there is always a risk.

I've had chips die. I've had mobos die. I've had vid cards die. The list is endless. But, I never came onto a forum and blamed the hardware....ever.

BTW, DFI never admitted anything on the Ultra/ SLI DR. ALl they said was that you should not run low mem voltages with the 4v jumper in place. There was just too much voltage to be eaten up and disapated for that. I can't beleive folks freak out about that. A perfectly designed feature....no. But, lol....I ran far MORE risk when I had to hard solder volt mod my mobos.

That's all I'll say on this topic. I feel bad for Pedro and I'll leave it at that.

Let the hysteria continue!

I thought that what enthusiast forums are for? To report the good and the bad. If he had a great overclock should he talk to DFi before he reports his wonderful results? The same is true with bad results. Sure it could just be one or two boards, but why should he stay tight-lipped and not say anything?

Personally I don't care if these mobo manufacturers didn't allow 4vdimm and 3v.to the cpu, there are still going to be record breaking oc's,but it might take a bit of electrical and soldering knowledge.

Another CPU....Another FX.... Died in Portugal!

Hi all, this is my first post and sorry to start with bad news. A friend of my has a FX55 that died today on DFI Expert....and without any OC!!

He played BF2 last night for a couple of hours and at the end he shutdown the computer without any problem as everyone else. Today he powerup the computer and imediatily hears a few bips and only 3 leds stay still...Nothing more happens....Just beeeeppp....beeeeppp....and so on!.............

He as another computer working but with a DFI-SLI DR/Opty146. He took way the Opty and place the FX55 on the DFI-SLI DR. Powerup the computer and....Same thing....few bips and only 3 leds stay still...Nothing more happens....Just beeeeppp....beeeeppp....and so on!.............

He didn't want to risk and try is healthy Opty on the Expert because his a fried of another death.:nono:

DFI Portugal was contacted and is informed of this bizzard situation, they say that they will inform DFI Taywan of wait for a first reaction and today is holliday in Portugal, soo friday or during the weekend DFI Portugal will have in their hands the board and the FX55.

What is going on?!...This is very strange soo many boards (DFI Nvidia/ATI) with potencial problems that could hurt the image DFI company. Something is not right with this boards and DFI has to look serious and focus on the problems as quick as possible...There's to many DFI costumers with very expensive CPU on this boards and some are burning out.

This case is indeed very strange...Without any OC!!....Powerup and the FX55 is dead!.........

I will follow his bad luck very close, because i my self, i'm a DFI Expert owner!!...Opty146: 3Ghz/DRR500...And i'm very affraid!

Hm, 3 leds on the DFI boards means the CPU works and there is a problem detecting the RAM.

Now, that could still fit the theory of a fried memory controller on the CPU.

But just to be sure, can your friend do a full CMOS clear on the SDI-DR, to rule out that saved BIOS settings from the Opteron prevented the FX from finding the RAM?

S-T-A-Y ... A-W-A-Y ... F-R-O-M ... E-X-P-E-R-T ....

Jesus!!! When will these people learn, this board has demons, don't throw your money down the drain. Use safer boards.

Martin, in DFI manual it's very clear and i know this for sure...

4 red leds up: System startup
3 red leds up: CPU Detected
2 red leds up: DRAM Detected
1 red leds up: VGA Detected
zero leds: System boot-up

This means each test sucessfull, one red led goes off. If 3 red leds are up and the system holds, that means that there's a problem with the CPU, didnt pass the test diagnost.

My friend did several CMOS Clear on both boards, almost every time before a system startup, he even changed his ram setup with another similar kit, he basicly change almost all the hardware.

In every diferent system setup he tried, where he puts that FX55, the problem was the same. He put the Opty back again in the DFI-SLI DR, made a CMOS Clear and the system powerup nicely and smooth as it was before.

All points out to the FX55 death....On a DFI Expert!

dfi nf4 boards prob have a big time record in buring CPUs. You guys should consider using Asrock :D.

Same here....Ran under cascade around 7 hours daily for 3 months (stock run and highly overclocked benching) with SLI-DR and FX55 claw/FX57 and no problem...

The best thing right now is for DFI to let us know what problem/s (if any) that cause malfunction of this boards......or what kind of user error if any.
At least with Ultra-D/SLI DR DFI warned us about possible problem with 4V jumper.

which psu are you guys using?? maybe is a problem with dfi+psu.

For RDX200 I use Zippy 700 (no problem with >3.2Vdimm)which won't work with Ultra-D with 4V jumper enabled. Enermax 660 is the other way around.

Can´t follow this logic...

...your friend´s got 3 LEDs up and manual says "3 red LEDs up: CPU Detected", so I´d say: CPU´s been detected, but no DRAM.

Greetz, Flox

Of course you have to keep in mind that you can damage your hardware while overclocking, but I'd say OPB and Pedro know how to swap cpus from one mainboard to another..

There are too many dead cpus already with this board for my liking..
Might be the board or anything else. Who knows. I guess only DFI can tell wether there is something wrong or not.

I just toasted an Opteron 148 on DFI Expert the other day, but that was my fault. I made a wrong calculation for the "CPU VID Special Control" % volt increase and I later figured the CPU was getting more than 2 V ... so it delivered its soul to the creator ...

Anyway DFI guys should arrange for a more clear way of showing the actual Vcore instead of damn percentages :shakes:

And just stating in the manual:

Quote:

CPU VID Control

Important: Although this function is supported, we do not recommend that you use a higher voltage because unstable current may be supplied to the system board causing damage.

---

is definitely not enough!

Why then should we buy this more expensive mobo???

Pedro, ganda azarito, meu!

This sittuations is simply not acceptable.

Me, Pedro, Ricky and Daniel are extremly angry about this situation, since this CPU was a great find from all the FX-57 we search, because of the cold-bug situation.

The life of a Extreme Overclocker is not an easy one, and with these "manufacturer mistakes", not a cheap one.

Sorry you are wrong here. 3 LEDS staying on means the memory hasn't been detected. I know for sure from "various" memory expriments.

---

Ok, just wanted to make sure a full clear was done.

Well, i could say the same, but i read it in another way. DFI manual says:

Led 2 to Led 5 are diagnostic leds. These Leds will indicate the current condition of the system.

System Condition: 4 Led - System Start-up
3 Led - CPU detected
2 Led - DRAM detected
1 Led - VGA detected
0 Led - System Boot-up

I understand that 4 led means system is up, one led goes off at 3 we are at CPU detection, another goes off at 2 we are at DRAM detection, another goes off at 1 we are at VGA detection, and the last goes off at 0 we have passed all tests and the system boots.

This is my read, each time a led goes off, it means the detection was sucessfull and pass to the next item diagnostic.

I could be wrong even with my experiments of the past, but my friend case is the FX55 for sure, that CPU doesn't work anymore even on a different board, the RAM is fine and works has before, actually everything works fine except for the FX55 and maybe the Expert also, he doesn't wants to risk another CPU on that board.

By tomorrow or during the weekend DFI Portugal will have the Expert with the FX55 and than we just have to wait and see what DFI has to say.

Looks like Pedro Rocha&Ricky case is a bit similar to my friends FX55, they also had the 3 leds, but they could get once to the bios, my friend case couldn't pass the 3 leds with that FX55 even in a different board, and i say again....The RAM is FINE!

I had a similar 3LED problem yesterday with the expert - but didn't have any hardware failure.

I was running 3DMark05 on an OPTY overclocked to 3.05GHZ on air and had a crash during the run.

After the crash I decided to put in another Videocard and test that card.
When rebooting the Expert would get stuck on 3LEDs. I could not get the system to boot again. I let the system rest with PSU off several times, but nothing would kick it on again. At first I had assumed that the CPU bit the dust.

I took out the Videocard and powered up the system without any Videocard installed and it would still hang with 3 LEDs.
When I put in the original Videocard ( both were 7800GTXs) - the system booted again. After that I switched back to the Videocard again that may or may not have caused the system not to boot, but now the videocard did work perfectly fine.

I have no idea right now if there might be any correlation to any of the above problems - I just wanted to share this experience, maybe any kind of parralel could be found.

Here's the solution:

Stop switching the cards around. Pack up the extra 7800 and then ship it to me :D

Crap I hate hearing this. Makes me scared to use my eXpert. FX57 is running @ 3ghz on air so far. LS is comming back soon from mods. Maybe I will have get the ASUS A8N32 SLI for peace of mind after all. :/

Let me know what DFI says. I hope you can get the CPU RMA'ed

Mike I dont think its about being spoiled. When the CPU is working great without any problems on another mb and you change the boards keeping identical conditions and the cpu dies something here is seriously wrong.

As we have noticed the eXpert/rdx killed a few cpus. But their is a chain, all of the guys who lost cpus were running them way out of spec. Dumo and pedro are running their cpus at much higher frequencies than everyone else on XS with an expert/rdx. Most of us are probably safe because we havent pushed our cpus so damn far on the expert. If all of us got a cascade for our expert i think we would be seeing more deaths.

that last led doesn't go off until the board gets past the POST, so it would be as follows:
all 4 on: cpu dectecting
3 on: ram detecting
2 on: video card bios detecting
1 on: working on finishing POST :)

Hi, Pedro:
Sorry to hear your story. You certainly drew our attention here. We had already conducted simulation tests, so far we could not duplicate the situation mentioned on your post.

To be able to look into this issue further, we need more details of what circumstance could cause this type of damage. For instance, details of programs you were running, a detail list of hardware connected to you motherboard, and BIOS setting you were using at that time. All those information will help us to narrow down the test range of our simulation tests.

Please assist us with more detail information. Thank you!

Hi,

The FX-55 JohnMike mentioned was mine!! The FX-55 was running perfectly without any kind of OC. One day, at night, i turn off the PC after playing BF2 and the next day, when i turn on the computer i could only hear a long "beeepppp" and 3 led's red.

3 days before, i've recived a message from the nvidia on my desktop, after i turn on the pc, telling me that the graphic card doesn't recived suficient power and if i choose the button "troubleshooting", says me to connect the power suply for the GPU. The GPU was a 6600GT and doesn't need extra power suply(I've a Enermax NoiseTaker 600W SLI Ready). I've got 2 more messages like this before the FX55 dies. I turn off the PC, wait a few minutes and then turn on PC again...and no problem with the power on GPU!!! I think probably this mobo had some kind of problem with the electric circuit :scope: , and doesn't give the correct voltage for PCIe, CPU, etc! It's very very strange!!! Today the 6600GT is working fine in the other computer i've (DFI SLI-DR), and never had some kind of message like i had in the DFI Expert!!! First i think GPU dies, but no.... it was the FX-55!!! :dammit: :cussing:

I think its time to DFI starting to do something, because many processors are to die in these motherboards and i'm losing the trust on this mobo's!! I am not the first one and certainly also not the last.....unhappily!!!!

Regards,

Anybody taking count of what revision these boards are? It might be a bad batch.

BTW, hello all. First post here in XS, long time guest.

To All:

Below is a post from a DFI representative. I post it here again because some of you may not have recognized that this is DFI asking for more information on Pedro's situation.

Until more information is gathered, I urge that we stay calm and not jump to conclusions. Threads like this tend to attract every user with a problem from around the globe. I see that 4 new members have registered only to report thier problems on this thread. Its easy to see how things can snowball.

I am not only speaking from my own positive personal experience with multiple DFI Expert motherboards, but from a common sense approach to issues such as this. Until DFI can duplicate the problem and verify an issue, I think we should reserve judgement. That's just my 2 cents.

I appreciate DFI looking into this matter.

I'm not judging DFI :nono: ....Since my SLI-DR, i'm an DFI addicted ... I've already 2 mobo's from DFI (SLI-DR and SLI-DR Expert) and after this FX dies i had 0 problems with DFI mobo's. I'm just reporting my problem. I've regitered here in XS because i saw the Pedro's post and after that, my FX-55 dies too and i wanna tell him (and to others unlucky guys) that isn't the only one with this kind of situation with this mobo, and in my case, without any type of OC!!!

In my case,

List of Hardware:

Enermax Noisetaker 600W SLI Ready power suply
DFI SLI-DR Expert
Patriot 2GB PC-3200 (PDC2G3200LLK)
WD Raptor 74GB
2x Hitachi Sata2 80GB
Creative Audigy X-Fi XtremeMusic
XFX 6600GT PCIe
LG Combo
Nec DVD-RW
LIS2 Premuim VFD
TT Hardcano 13

List of programs:

WinXP Pro SP2
Some games (BF2, COD2, Steam)
Smartguardian
Openoffice2
Creative X-FI software and drivers
Other programs like winrar, etc
Latest ForceWare Release 80 - Windows XP/2000 32-bit Version: 81.95 and nForce4 AMD Edition - Windows XP/2000 (32-Bit) chipset drivers Version: 6.70
Multimedia Control Centre for LIS2 Premium VFD v2.2.2.2

Bios Configuration (default BIOS that cames with mobo):

Dificult to report because i can't access to bios now, but as i remember i've changed the values from "auto" to the correct settings on the CPU voltage, multiplier, etc to run the CPU default values (200x13 -> 2600MHz), and the mem setings. On the mems menu i only changed the tCAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS to 2-3-2-5, and choose 200MHz at frequency and the vDimm to 2.6v. The others changes in other BIOS menus was less important (i think), like onboard audio off, IEE off, etc. One other thing i changed was the primary display to PCIe, because it was PCI. Nothing more....

I hope this info usefull to try to understand what happened.

Regards,

I still think it would improve the situation a lot if we would send around some of the "killing" boards so that a few of us can have a look before they go to DFI.

Because no matter what DFI says or does, zealots from either side will cry foul. Even if DFI would start hading out CPUs for free, then some people would take that as confirmation that their board was at fault.

It is a lose-lose situation for DFI - and for those of us who saved countless hours of our free time because of DFI's work.

@ MFM..Why did you buy a DFi board if you werent overclocking? Why does anyone buy DFi boards if theyre not going for world records? There are much better stable alternatives then DFi for stability and price.:2cents:

Shi(f)t.....I can understand your pain in your heart caused by this burned CPU.....It's BETTER lossing 10 motherboards, than 1 killer CPU......I fill sorry for you Pedro.....:(

I hate when a good CPUs passes away just like that......It doesn't cost money, it costs in our heart......

I want to make it perfectly clear that i have absolutely no problems with folks reporting their success of failure with certain hardware. My comment was not directed at you. I was pointing out how threads like this can lead to distorted data when it attracts people with problems from around the globe without attracting the happy satisfied users as well.

I am happy that you registered here at XS and hope you stay around and enjoy the forums!

Simple...i had my FX-55 overcloked on the SLI-DR with the patriot mems, and it OC good. When i put the FX on the Expert with this mems, i can't OC very well, so i was waiting to "change" my mems or waiting for a new Official BIOS release that improve mem performance. Until then i was waiting. I wouldn't like to make the OC with divisors on the mems or pull the multi too high. I'm using air cooling for now....waiting to buy perhaps a promy. It was good not having done oc with this mobo, because we now can presume thats not the OC that kills the FX!!!
