So to address a few issues.

Cold bug

As you chill an A64 the stength of the memory controller increases, so the colder you go the more you over drive the dimms. So you have to weaken the drive.

You do this on both the memory controller and on the motherboard

1T with 4 dimms

Oskar aparantly has a bios that allows ddr406 or so with 4x1gig dimms at 1t for the old NF4 LP boards. He promised this bios to a friend of mine last week...we still have not seen it though. If you are lucky enough to have Oskars IM details you will notice he is advertising this info in a nice MSN header...so i would say he is pretty excited about it.

I know there are ways to increase the amount of drive the memory controller can deliver and i will say with the correct board 1t 4gig is real...i have done 4x512 1T at 200fsb but this was with pure determination and 4 sweet dimms so don't ask me to do it again till i get oskars new bios to play with ;)

Ram overclocking in general

Guys there is a lot happening with motherboards you don't know about, just applying voltage does not get the job done any more. I had a recent lengthy conversation with Oskar and we both agreed the biggest gains with ram on any board are made with drive strength tweaks and memory termination resistance...both of these do not involve any voltage increase.
Motherboard manufacturers used to just focus on the CPU for overclocking, now we are seeing a push to address the ram issues. Its something i have been pushing for a good while and you have seen the products of some of the conversations with the new breed of boards coming from the likes of DFI etc, and please understand they are listening to quite a few skilled enthusiasts, not just me.

Please embrace what im trying to tell you here, grayskull is actually hinting as best he can also on some of the same. Just because an AMD CPU white paper insists 4x1gig =2t does not mean it has to be so, you all need to appreciate there are people out there who do push the envelope and will do what is impossible.

now to finish

I have a CF-DR on the way from Taiwan, its a final release retail board and i will be posting with it as soon as its here. it is a 6 layer board.

CF-BT has been pushed back 2 weeks I hear but its still a reality, its based on a 6 layer design not 4 layer and the memory traces are being spread over 4 layers to improve crosstalk, thats the only tweak it needed. I have fellow testers doing 315fsb+ on the ATI reference easy with TCCD so how much improvement DFI will make i have no idea, its already a fine strong board.
NF4 expert will ship to me sortly after CF-DR and again i will post what i think and find of it, Xs will be the first place with info i hope.

Thanks for the info Tony! With that all said I am more than happy to wait until Christmas to go Crossfire.

Personally, i know 4 sticks of 5b-d chips single-sided(for 2 GB) gives 2623mb/sec in memtest 1.55 @ 3-3-3-8-11-14-2-3-1-2 @ 200mhz, so i'd love to see a board offering it stable, 'cause i can almost get it now, but not quite.I can feel it there, tho, so your info comes with much anticipation.

I want to add based on what Tony said, don't expect the same Ram overclockability with(even) 4 x 512MB rams at 1T as you will have on another config with 2 x 512MB........Am I wrong on this?......

I don't think so, but i'm pretty sure they are aiming for 4gb 1t, and i am thinking of single-sided...might work out the same as going 2x256, ykwim? It all really jsut breaks down to math, so it SHOULD be totally possible.

It's dependent on the memory controller, but IMO that with added latency via bios that 1t may be possible but I wouldn't think at very high htt.

You haven't convinced me yet. It is hardly to believe a motherboard can make 1T possible with 4 dimms inserted with double side dimms!

I also saw DDR600 4x512 TCCD 2.5-3-3-7 on a taiwanese forum, you know who i mean. Never able to achieve that.

But, i am exicted what tweaks Oskar wu used.

I think better at night....anyway, that's the config I run right now so if DFI can even get the 2T performance up I might still be sold. Anyway, I'll wait till we get more info before judging and making purchase decisions--this thing's bloody expensive!

Looking forward to some results sometime soon though! :banana:

now im not doubting he found something thats fast, but i doubt its cas1.5.

If you all want to try for 4dimms 1T try 200fsb with ram in 183 mode and push up slow. thats how i did it a while back. TCCD at 2.5-3-3-8 2.6V 4 dimms.

sorry no screenies, 8m pi stable but thats all i really tested...i didn't actually think of it as a big deal as a 2gig kit is faster and easier to clock.

Alright Jason....just saw your offer for a free Mousepot for 4xDS in 1T, does that count for 2x512 + 2x1024 as well? I'm 90% sure I can get it to work again, maybe even at >DDR400 speeds this time, I'll try right now.

BTW, all my hardware and BIOS versions is retail/publicly available.

Alright Jason, I can't even boot at 190....no bother in booting lower and working my way up cause it won't work. You win....until we get some new BIOSs to play with though (which is what I really care about, I'd take DDR400 2.5-2-2-x 1T over DDR500/550 3-3-3-0 2T any day).

Command rate is a latency the memory itself doesn't "experience". Command rate affects things that take place before any signals are sent to the dimm-to-be-accessed.

In short, Command rate value is the amount of cycles that within the memory controller (mc) is supposed to decode a rank address in the whole of memory space for a bit to be accessed.

I don't see why achieving DDR400 1T with 8 ranks would be impossible.

Because of the nature of command rate as a latency, ability of a mc to run 1T with high speeds and large memory spaces (8 ranks) cannot be considerably improved. By saying "considerably" I mean sqeezing much more than, say DDR400 1T. I believe no board can be certified to do 1T DDR400 with 4xDS, in majority of cases memory controller forms the limiting factor.

It could be done by tweaking the routes between cpu and memory banks - and maybe some bios optimizations. I gather this is exactly what DFI is doing to their Expert board and the upcoming bios'.

This would naturally REQUIRE a good proc too.
How good is another question.

No way DFI Expert board would do that. :)

This new design only gives a slight bump. It won't make memory controllers somehow magically to be able to do 1T and 4x DS at higher frequencys.

It only inhibits the mobo-related problems.

This info looks very promising, it is even making me kinda glad they delayed so long, cause my system is going to be a beast now with all the extra cash I saved up! Makes me wonder if I should get 512x4 of OCZ VX4000 instead of 1024x2 of OCZ Plat PC4000 EB. Guess it depends on how high I see people getting with 512x4, cause I need at least 230 or so for that to be worth it for me.

rsGTS....you won't get 230 2-2-2 1T stable with 4x512, sorry. I'd go with the Mushkin PC4000 sticks that should be out very soon--if you're looking to purchase more immediately, get the OCZ 2x1024 PC4000EB.

Better voltage stability supposedly....probably better memory performance at the same settings as well. There's also more room between PCIe slots for some better cooling :D

11x multi with 183 ram results in a higher integer memory divider than expected. ;) I hope this isn't what allows it to work at 1T...

Very little waiting left on the DFI RDX!! I received my retail sample about 30min ago. :D Mu guess is that the Egg will have them real soon. (Damn egg gets stuff before me. :mad: I expect "for sale" product" next week. If anyone is interested in the board I will check on my final cost and see if I can hook you guys up. ;) )

I plan on testing with 4 512MB TCCD @ 1T as soon as I get an OS on it.

Just got it. I have not asked DFI which bios it has on it. Going to :stick: on that as soon as they open up.

Look, there is a large group of overclockers that ALL used s940 last year with the FXs....I happen to still love my sk8v. I read your challenge and posted 4x512 @ddr400+ 1T with AMD. You never said anything about which socket. I was just having a little fun, that's all. :)
Besides, I'm not trying to claim any fame here, but it was my thread earlier this year that exposed this difference to a larger audience, pretty sure that was before your "return" to XS. But honestly, I don't know you and I'm sure you're a nice guy, but your "long before you" statement kinda bugs me. Frankly, you really don't know. But feel free to point me to a thread here or at "that other site" where you did 1T with 4x512.

Bottom line is be more careful about how you word stuff, because half the people in this world be seriously thinking they deserved that Mousepot :D Of course, I know that was not in the spirit of your original challenge. Take it easy.

We Mastered that board and all of us have ran 4x512 at 1t.

Please link me a thread from "years ago" where you or anyone else is running 4x512 @ 1T. Far as I can tell THIS LINK was the one of the first threads on CPC, and it was well after most of you guys were playing with the FX-51, 2 sticks of 512, on either the SK8V or SK8N. I searched many of the old threads on the SK8V including many of your posts, and nobody ever discusses 1t or 2t and in fact there are no threads where anyone is even using 4x512mb.

^ that clearly shows 2x512 in Sandra, showing bank interleave at 2-way, it should read 4-way, not to mention only two dimms are filled. Besides, why would someone do an amazing run like that and run 4 sticks, makes no sense. I think the original post of "512x4" is a mistake, and the Sandra shot supports that.

This thread ends here... Perkam gave everyone interested a link to Tony's another thread where discussion about 4x512MB 1T progressed a little bit further.

@MM and Drcrawn,

Your arguement stops here. MM asked for DDR400 4x512MB 1T on DFI Crossfire S939. We now know that this board can do it (not much more above DDR400, though) so case is now closed. S940 boards has never had this issue as you know. Getting deeper into this discussion is pointless.
