Just got my Opteron 146 :)

Woohooo,

just got my Opty in the post, UK to Cyprus in 5 days! Thanks to Stella over at cpucity.co.uk for sorting this all out, first UK retailer of Opty 939 with the help of XS and one of its members :).

Right my cooling is as follows:

XP90 some crappy low speed 90mm fan

This will be updated in the next few days to:

temporary water cooling setup + some lumps of ice in water :D
first attempt a WaterCHiller, dont want to cold temps +10C idle would be nice

Booted up fine at 2.8ghz 1.4v, idle temps 38C, ambient temps arnd 28C (its hot and humid in Cyprus :p: ). Running prime95 as we speak, onto 2nd test, temps are arnd 48C.


The CPU I have has a low last three didget number I think its 036 :), we will see if the low number proves to be any good. Im going to push it as far as it goes on default voltage, the temps r already quite high, once ive tested on air, I will switch to water. Need to get tht sorted, just finished cleaning out my WC system, now need to work out how to set everything up.

Think I will be priming, benching whilst planning the WC setup :cool:

Hehhehe, onto test number 5, temps steady at 46-48C, not bad when considering ambient temps.

Yeah just had a look at the MaxTCase info in the 'Unofficial' thread, gundamit is a 65C one, lets see if 67C makes a difference, hehehhehee, im excited to see how far this one goes, touch wood it doesnt go belly up like my 2.9ghz 0512DPBW Venice did.

0.04v == 3C increase in temps

Im sure the WC is going to help this chip out with the heat, only once ive fully tested will i think abt removing IHS. Lets see how long it takes to fail now, back to planning....

Im taking it easy, the chips run hot and my fan aint very good at moving air, the real high clocks will come once the WC is setup. 2.9Ghz with 1.44v priming aint too bad

Just failed after 30min, not the usual error though, got a

'FATAL ERROR: Final result was B2....., expected: 3E......'

Be4 i move the voltage up, which i dont fancy doing (getting mightly hot), im going to check my setting in bios, see if i can get 2.9Ghz prime stablish without increasing voltage, call me boring, but the CPU sure is burning in at low voltage

I'm getting a 144, Using 2x1gb of micron chips so Im stuck on a divider anyway, figured might as well save the $60 and just use 9x instead of 10x. Now I just have to hope that my DFI has no problems hitting 340 HTT.

No I dont think so. I'm buying it from tankguys with the cpu. If you're talking about the board I think you are (What was it, $105 in FS?) then I was second in line and looks like the first guy took it. Tankguys price is decent. $120 + ship And I'm paying like $8 shipping for both parts.

Thanks. I dont think my chips (Venice/SD) have been that bad. A couple 2.8's on air. a couple dozen 2.7's and possibly the worst week 17 ever (2.5-2.6). But I wouldn't have any complaints about a 3.1ghz+ stable on air chip. :D I'm Sort of expecting 2850-2900 though.

Just a small update be4 i bring WC results, CPU burned in last night at 280x10 with 1.3v using CPU Burn-In without crashing :). Just trying out some superPI at 290x10 with 1.38v (1.4vbios) almost at the end of 16M run now. Will be popping out to buy some cheap tubing and will leave 32M running, hopefully wont crash by the time i come back.

Im really looking forward to the results of this CPU under WC

edit: Mine is a 67C as well, what does that tell me?

Zeus i think they're all 0530APMW, i haven't heard of any other stepping for these Opties.

Doing good mongoled, hope the burn in is having some effect. Some people say burn in on air with high temps help, and then to improve cooling? i don't know if that has any validity but seems to be what you're doing so good luck.

Ok got the CPU on water, must admit I expected more, not tht I have poor results, just my expectation are probably too high!!

Anyhow I managed to get a superPI 1M @ 3100mhz

Im priming right now at 3Ghz with 1.5v, CPU is at 45C. Hopefully with some burn in I will be able to increase my benchable clocks. At 3100mhz I cant do much more than superPI 1M :(. Increasing the voltage has a negative effect on the ovrclk. I can boot at 3150mhz but have no real stabilty.

Wish I had another board here so I could see if it really is the CPU tht cant go higher. Think I may try watercooling the nthbridge to see if it effects my clocks, from wht I understand it shouldnt, but their is no harm in trying

If anybody wants me to try a few things, just let me know. Im going to put in the freezer some ammonia packs I have to bring the water temp down a little and will see if I can do some superPI at 3.2Ghz.

Oh and I still got IHS on, will only consider taking it off as last resort to reaching a higher clock!

Well it looks like the mthbrd has died on me, its been acting funny for a while and may have cst me the life of my venice chip while i was still in the UK.

I hope my Opteron is ok, i tested my winny with the mthbrd and it still doesnt work. Ive tried a diff gfx card and again no go.

I get all the red led's lit, but no post :(

Im thinking of getting the aRock mobo :), to tie my down till i get one of the new ati chipset mobo or even the DFI Extreme edition mthbrd.

Will hae to do a little reading on the aRock, if anyone has any suggestions with regards to my mthbrd please let me know.

I managed to revive the mthbrd,

was ready to place another order when i remembered tht if i bought another mobo their was a chance I wouldnt be able to access my hardrives because im running RAID so need the controller.

So i got up this morning with the intent to hotflash a NF4 bios on a NF2 mthbrd, heheheee. Anyhow be4 I got to attempting this, i decided to have one more attempt in restarting the mthbrd, out of the case. Well guess wht it booted, but this dosnt mean it is working as should.

Im running right now at 4x200 with a 166 divider and 1.225 volts :eek:, i wasnt able to get it into windows with any sort of stabilty with any other way. Im also getting hardrive corruption, tried switching the SATA ports but this doesnt seem to be the cause of the failure.

Question: Would a very erratic vCore cause harddrive corruption?

Im going to flash the bios to the latest bios on dfi website and will see if the mobo starts behaiving. Im still interested in getting the aRock, thts if it shares the same SATA RAID controller as this mobo (im doubting this very much)

That's the reason I quit using raid0 in oc'ing. It doesn't take much to corrupt the hd's and nf does not work with ghost in raid0. Glad to hear it's bad working, big hassle rma'ing stuff.

i guess that i am going to have to get me one of these chips with an 11x multi for UTT and a prommy the ram on chilled water

Hey I know wht u mean!! Ive managed to save this array, by using an IDE drive, booting to the OS, then connecting the SATA cables into my hitachi drives. The OS wasnt even readable in windows

After running chkdsk c: /r, im currently running on it again! My friend had EXACTLY the same thing happen to him, and we have found a common thing we did to have these problems. It came from lowering the vCore too much when trying to burn-in!! For some reason, the Ultra-D (we both have) in combination with the Opteron 146 (we both have) with low voltage corrupts the raid0 drives, to the extent tht it is not possible to boot the computer properly never mind get into the operating system.

Think im going to continue my ovrclk experiments on my SATA drive or even the IDE drive i have!!

So after 3 days of trying to resolve the raid0 problem I can get back to ovrclking this puppy i have, hopefully more results to come soon...........

Acronis True Image works with RAIDed drives. I use it to keep two identical operating systems on two different RAIDed drives. I use one for all my overclock eperimentation and inevitable corruption, and boot to the other only when using known stable settings. If anything gets screwed up in one, I boot to the other and restore a clean image, and I'm back in business. Might be worthwhile to investigate...

Thanxs for tht information, I may investigate the this product, as you say it works with raid0 then tht is great :)

A strange problem I had with my array was tht even when I was trying to reinstall the OS it would still crash at the stage the computer tries to access the raid controller (im assuming this).

Anyhow, this is another conversation, hehheee

Looks to be running at least 3C cooler, im priming while i right this at 2.9Ghz with default volts. My digital mm says my core is running with 1.44v. I will be doing some testing tonite, I hope i can reach greater speeds

Here is superPI 32M at 3050mhz, without IHS load temps have dropped 6C, the CPU now scales as it should have in the beginning with voltage increase!

Am using 1.525v set ib bios, 1.57v on my digital MM, load temps 40C

Well I finally managed to dump some ice into my bucket to get a half decent attempt at a superPI 32M bench.

Here is wht 5C water helped me get, this is at 3150mhz, 9:10 divdier giving mem 287mhz 2.5-4-3-7

I tied superPI'ing @ 3200mhz but failed on the 11th Iteration, the water is starting to heat up already!!

You have a good CPU. Why don't you suitch your ram for some new PC4800 TCCD? You should reach 315 without dividers. If I had a CPU like that!

Unless I get round to building a water chiller this CPU will 'only' be running at 300x10. In an ideal world, I would have a cascade setup which will fit in my case and the ram you described, heeehehee.

There are better Opteron 939 CPU's than mine, I wont know if this one is struggling until I try it out on a new board, some of this CPU siblings are clocking at 3Ghz with alot less voltage than mine and im without IHS!

But running 315 stable with only 1.5v core is nothing a XP-90C with a decent fan can't handle. You will get about 46-48º degrees in full load.

hmmm i think you are assuming too much ;), I had the CPU on an XP90 (non 'c' version), crap fan though and the heat it was giving off could not be handled as I increased the voltage. This CPU is putting out alot of heat, and wont run over 3Ghz unless voltage is greater than 1.55v!

I wish it would run at 3Ghz on an XP90, hehehee

The only difference between a 939 opteron and any other 939 cpu of the same mhz/cache is that the opteron is binned higher.

by binned higher do you mean they have more mhz buffer?

My understanding of binning is this: Due to inevitable variations during the manufacturing process, a given lot of chips (be they CPU's, memory, or whatnot) from the same batch will not perform identically. The only way to determine the merits of a given chip is for the manufacturer to actually test them. Some are dogs, some are average, and some are superior. These chips are then "binned" accordingly - that is they are physically seperated from each other according to their performance. Say, for example, we are talking PC3200 memory. The dogs go on to become value memory, the average chips become standard memory, and the superior chips become performance memory. All are rated at PC3200, but some will perform better than others, and thus the manufacturer charges accordingly.

This is just my understanding, and I am sure someone in the know could provide more accurate and/or better details.

Yes, they clock a lot higher but I have seen no evidence that they are anything but very OC friendly SD cores on the cheap. If there is some process involved that creates this in the fab then it is something that I am not going to speculate about. I won't even pretend that I know what AMD puts into their chips.

Remember mongoled, you only get 5 minutes of fame and you already used up 2. It's better not to use the 5min all at once. :D

Really, once the results on phase comes out, the numbers are so great that it pales guys like you and me on air and water. When you see 3400Mhz+ it gets your attention(it does me). Once more people get there optys, there will be more talk about air and water.

Just a little heads up guys just got off the phone with monarch and they told me they should have 146's this week prob fri.

The real prob is the bios.Only the 1.8 will do 280 or over,but if u read msi sight they make updating bios sound like a trip to the moon.
