Zalman 9500CU vs Thermaltake Big Typhoon: the FINAL answer

1st: why did I start a SEPARATE topic? Because I am tired of people whining and :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:ing and crying that you can't buy the Zalman, how expensive it is, and now good it's supposed to be :slap: Hence, I want everybody to see it (which is not likely with a single post in the Zalman thread)

In the 1st case, Big Typhoon beats the Zalman @ max RPM by 6C with case fans on and by 4C with case fans off while under full load via S&M. Big Typhoon is 1) cheaper, 2) available for months, 3) cools the RAM and the surrounding area of the CPU socket and 4) PERFORMS BETTER. So please don't give me a nervous breakdown and buy or wait for the Zalman :stick:

Yeah much better than a freezer... the higher the thermal load, the better the BT shines...

I have no doubt it will perform better than my Zalman 7000-CU.
Running a 630 @ 4Ghz, stock voltage on a DFI 875P-T.
Temps are around 62-66°, 2x Prime right now.

Can't wait to compare the results, but I expect a huge temp drop.

Jupiler, you'll lose 10-15C man!

That would be nice if it does.
Anyway, ordered one and will pick it up on monday evening.

yeah but its too big, too much hassle and gets kinda price (2x120mm fans + original cost).. but i would really like to see a direct comparison between the BT, 9500, xp120 and the sonic

In intel last cpu's is hard to get under 50º temps full i think..

not on a high load proc, doesn't matter what fans you put on, the BT comes out on top..just my testing, take it all with a grain of salt, one experience is not the worlds..

Remount it.. I have it mounted in a Enermax Maxflow inverted and my idle is 28, load 41 deg c.

haven't picked it up yet.
They only notified me at 6pm, which was to late for me to get it.
I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning at 9am, and I hope to post some results in the afternoon, if all goes well.

How does it compare with the XP-90C

leaving all other factors aside, pure cpu cooling, which HS is better? The BT or the 90C

the BT... but only on high load chips... I found almost zippo diff on single core procs for example...

I'm going to take issue with what you wrote above.

What is the airflow difference between the two fans on the heatsinks ? To judge accurately how the heatsink performs you need to have the same amount of air blowing over them. If the Typhoon has equal or less cfm than the Zalman then I agree, it looks like the Typhoon does a better job however that still does not fully show one way or another as one of the heatsinks might have more "capacity" than the other before temperatures start to runaway.

The only way I could hope to make a judgement betwen the two would be to buy both, rip their poor cfm low speed fans out and then use them on my rig and get my own values.

Buy an Asetek Micro, pull that idiotic duct off, place the fan right on the heatsink. Did give me good results :)

Does anyone know how the Typhoon compares to the Tt Tower 112 copper monster? (with lets say two normal 92mm fans)

Let's put it this way... with the stock fan on my BT (it might get 34cfm), I get 4-7c better temps than with an XP90 and 110cfm fan...

I picked up the BT today and I was impressed by the looks of this cooler. What a monster.
Actually, it was the first time I bought a cooler with a heatpipe design, and using 120mm fans.
Installation was pretty easy, the manual explains it pretty clearly, although I had to pay attention not to tighten the nuts to hard, because I firstly did, which resulted in the board bending pretty badly.

There's enough space and clearence around the cooler, in case anybody would wonder.

So, after all was installed, I powered up the rig (still using the same settings), and was impressed by the quietness of the 120mm fan. I almost can't hear it.
The loudest part in the rig is my Fortron 530W PSU, whose fans are pretty annoying. I'll be looking for a more quiet PSU though.

So off it went.
After XP booted completely, I ran 2 instances of Prime95, just like it did before with the Zalman 7000-CU.

The temps of the DFI 875P-T fluctuate a lot.
With the Zalman, they went from 61-67°, mostly around 64-65°, but never got them under 60°C.
So I was anxious to see how the BT would perform, and what temp difference I would expect.
After almost 4 hours of Prime, I was impressed by the temp decrease compared with the 7000-CU.
Fluctuated between 50-57°, mostly around 54-55°, never got over 57°C though.

A nice whopping 10°C decrease with the BT, very impressive I must say.
All in all, I'm very happy with the BT, maybe temps might go down a little more, once the AC has settled in.
Will be hard to beat this cooler for it's price.

Thanks for the results Jupiler, that's a whopping decrease..not bad for something you cannot really hear.... I have ordered a faster fan (up to 100cfm) and I'm going to put it on a variable speed controller. Let's see if the BT can do better... I think this cooler offers the best bang for the buck..let's see if I can beat up some of the WC kits with a new fan for the 50 bucks I'll have invested...

I agree it is looking pretty good, what I am saying is that rather than hype one way or another it is better in my view to put as much info as you can across and let people decide for themselves as more results come in. The first poster was implying the Zalman was bad, which is not really the case, it just might be that something else is better.

I've ordered a BT to see how she performs as they are cheap and available and worth a spin.

In reply to Jupilers results that does look very good. I have a 7000 at present which has the original fan ripped out and a delta 80mm 80cfm FFB0812EHE on top.

As you can see there is also a Papst 6212nm 170mm which is over 200 cfm and cools graphics card, memory and that pesky MOSFET heatsink that gets hot when you have it jumpered for more than 3.3v VDIMM.

This was part of the reason I was saying the results provided might be too simplistic and it all depends on your own setup. With my set up I have two competing air flows at 90 degrees to each other and so the shape and orientation of the heatsink might be just as important as the amount of metal and the cfm of the fan. Also my setup is in my shed where temps can range from -5C to 35C ambient.

When the BT arrives I'll post some results in comparison to the zalman to grow the knowledge pool. Thanks for the tip about bending Jupiler, that is a classic error I tend to make. Cheers.

Actually, the bending happened when I installed the standoffs to the boards, not after screwing the little nuts in.

If you plan on using the cooler on several boards in the future, I suggest not to peel off the tape from the spounge. It's double sided sticky tape, and once installed, might be hard to remove it without damaging the spounge itself.
But the cooler will remain on my pressi for a longer, so it doesn't bother me actually.

I popped on one of the TT 120mm 78 CFM fans, although it was loud I dropped another 3 deg on load. 2.8 Ghz @ 1.64v never broke 39deg c. Stock fan is about 42. The fan was too loud but worked over the hot summer, I put the stock fan back on now and it's not breaking 40c with the fall temps coming (NY).

Great news on the 10 deg C drop the BT is amazing!!

Actually, you should be using the double taped foam attached to the thin black plastic peice that came with it...this ensures that if the foam is compressed the backplate does not ground out the back of the socket. Hence. the double-sticky foam, and the thin black peice being in the box! :stick: you stick one side to the metal backplate, and the other to the plastic black "insulator"

Please tell me you used the plastic piece too...

But one last question (dont be hard on me ;) )

I had 2 heatsinks in mind for cooling my 4ghz prescott (see sig)
First is was thinking of an xp-90c, and secondly the big typhoon.
Im someone who moves his computer around a lot (lans.....)

Whats the cooler that fits me best xp-90c or big typhoon. (cause the BT is even more heavy then the XP-90c, kinda scary when moving around)
But I want my temps to be around 55° max (case is antec p180)
And is the BT way better then the xp-90c ?

I attached a thin strip of metal from each top corner of the BT to the top rail where the PSU fits in to reduce any chance of movement and also to reduce stress on the mobo....

If you turn your case on it's side, so that the board lays horizontally, then there won't be any problem with either of both coolers while carrying your case.

That xbit article is good and adds extra weight to the BT being better. I'm avidly reading all these reviews as my BT has not turned up yet, it's a Big Late Tornado, or BLT :). It's a new place I ordered it from so hopefully they are ok ...hmmmm.

Two interesting things from the xbit article, the BT seems to lose it's advantage when out of the case due to the 9500 doing a lot better, this would suggest to me that something is up with the 9500 airflow when in a case, even with the case fan on.

I was also interested in what they said about where the BT got warm. I expected the cpu covering part of the sink and the bottom of the heatpipes to get hottest but they say it is where the fan / fins are, which goes to show you how much I know about how heatpipes work :). To be honest up until fairly recently I have been a bit sceptical in regards to heatpipes, thinking it more of a marketing trick, but the results of the BT from xbit and other reviews ( including XS members ) are consistently good.

Here goes a tip from Portugal

i used 2 TT Smart Case fans (A2018) one on the top of the other and gained 1ºC.

Both at 2000 rpm.

I have a AXP 3000+ plus Asus A7N8XE-Deluxe

Temps:

TAmb: 22ºC
TIdle: 34ºC
TFull: 36ºC (With CPU Burn)
TFull: 38ºC (With S&M)

I´m waiting for a 170 cfm fan from Sunon (120x120x38cm)

mines is on the mobo header for a few months now

It's a really slow 120mm fan so it doesn't eat much power. Shouldn't be any problem running it off the mobo IMO

My Big Typhoon was delivered yesterday. Quite a few of the fins were bent and pushed together so I spent 20 minutes asjusting them with a flat headed screwdriver. I was going to test it last night but our new sofa arrived and whilst testing this in front of the television promptly fell asleep.

I'll test it tonight. I have a similar current setup to Jupiler ( Zalman 7000 ) so we'll see whether I get similar results.

Here is the results from the original Zalman 7000 which used the same setup as in the picture above, ie dleta 80cfm fan on top and Papst 6212nm 200cfm to the side. Ambient was 22.8C, I'm using the nvidia ntune program to log the results, the link takes you to a log file which I have scanned for virus' and they are ok

I spent so long installing/ adapting the BT the ambient later was down 3C ! However it still did very well

As you can see, even with the 3C ambient loss the BT still manages to push out a big 5-7C decrease in temps, which is pretty impressive. I'll have to rethink my thoughts on heatpipes etc, I just thought they were a gimmick.

For a cheaper heatsink the BT is very good indeed, actually it is very good full stop.

Well I got my big typhoon last week and im impressed :)
The typhoon holds my system @ 50-52° stressed (s&m and prime95 test)
And thats in an antec p180 with all the fans running low speeds

But I did spend some time with it.
First I lapped it till it got a mirror finish,
and I used bigger screws and wingnuts to mount it.
(the screws that come with it suck, using bigger ones is better feels stronger)

But its a good deal not to expensive.

how does this compare to the SI-120? thermalright's new 120MM heatsink?

Based on this thread, Mine's on it's way (In the UK, Eclipse Computers)

Oh, and a 100CFM Squirrel/Cage Clower...

Replacing the stock fan improves performance 1-2C with a 220 CFM Delta.. so no point, really

My advice is to start a new thread in air cooling, list your full system specs and the guys will jump in to figure out what you need for best effect.

I personally prefered the Thermal Right SI 120 as it has a copper base and the
aluminuim pipes helps to transfer the heat faster to the aluminium fins.

Also i know that this thread is not related to SI-120 but still wud prefer it as its light.

People in Air cooling always and I mean always report the ambient temperature. Wich

is a major factor in this type of cooling.

Still testing - installation and removal is much easier being that it's a little smaller. Temps seem up about 1 degree load but the AS5 hasn't had more than a few hours to cure.

Such a hard choice.. a respected manafacturer with a copper heatsink or a manafacturer that has delivered a few poor products in the past (with a huge amount of lying for the CFM and DB ratings) with an aluminum heatsink (not that I think TT is crap, just some of the earlier products).

Aluminum is much lighter than copper, and copper performs about 3 times better.. and the BT is something like 300 grams heavier..

I'm still having trouble deciding. I've seen some benchmarks that place the BT at the lower end of CPU cooling, and I know that the Zalman isn't the best cooler (with its current fan..).

I'm already getting load temps of 38-42 degrees with the stock cooler.. so whats the temp difference between ambient the CPU with the BT?

Past history aside, the Big Typhoon is probably the BEST Air cooler on the market now and yes, it's silent! There is no lying on specs, this thing just kicks ass. So far the Zalman 9500 is ok, it is easier to install / uninstall but the temps are also hotter. Now I think it's stripped my backplate due to the way it is designed. It works well but nothing will replace my Big Typhoon!

The reviews show the TT-BT beating the Zalman fair and square and yes near silent.

I've seen some conflicting / weird reviews that show crappier coolers than the 9500 beating the BT... I don't trust those reviews though.

I'm probably going to get the BT then, something that performs good, is very silent, and cheaper at the same time is hard to pass by (I don't trust the 19db rating though.. )

Nor would i since its rated at 16db not 19db, solongs its quietish.

Ok folks -

I've here to report. The Zalman would not prime stable into the 2.9's no matter what volts, etc. I reseated it a few times it just was not 100% with the 9500. ...NOW with the Big Typhoon a nice application of AS5 and guess what... 2900 is primeable at 1.5v, 2912 is primeable at 1.52v.


So the final words (I am still testing max stable OC with the BT)....are this.

The Zalman 9500 NOT prime stable at 2.9 Ghz 1.50 - 1.55v load temps were 47 deg c.

The Big Typhoon prime stable at 2.90 (1.50v) and 2912 (1.52v) and working my way up....load temps 42 max.

I think it's clear to see the Big Typhoon takes the cake. - This is in a closed case, the pic is above it's the Enermax Maxflow (reverse ATX).
