Preliminary results with New OCZ DDR500 Gold 2x1gig kit !

Got these on Monday from Monarch computers, OCZ PC4000 Gold 2x1gig kit. Mine are serial #00000004 :D I haven't had alot of time to tweak or anything so these are pretty much plug and play results. But they look really good so far ;)

They use Samsung IC's so they should perform pretty well and are on Brainpower 808 pcb's. Without any tweaks running at 3-4-4-8 I was able to do 275mhz @ 2.7v in windows without any memory errors, I used memtest in windows and Super Pi to test. This was with everything set to optimized defaults using 704-1 bios. And like I said, I've not had time to play with settings so IMO 280mhz or more is possible with some tweaking.

My optimum setup with the X2 4400+ in my work rig (see sig) is just over 2.8ghz, so I'm running them at 11x257mhz at 3-4-3-7 1t with 2.6v for my 24/7 config. I included some screen shots with those timings and Sandra for those interested.

Sorry I didn't have time yet for 32m Pi, I wil try and top these out in before the weekend and see what they can really do. I'll post some more screenies then.

lookin good! with battlefield 2 being such a RAM whore, its good to see some overclocker friendly 2 gig kits finally.

Good Ballistix is seen doing about the same with tighter timings these days (3-3-3)...but it is nice to see some competition.

I had these in my play rig last night and was able to run 2.5-3-3-7 1t at 250mhz but can't seem to do it on this rig, not sure if its the different bios or what.

EDIT: Just needed 2.7v instead of 2.6v I had been running

well sounds like the do respond with volts why dont ya krank them up and tell us what hapens hehe

those screenshots show 257, are you sure about 275?? Check your posts you said here and at BE that the max was 277 but the screenshots you have are all at 257...

mine max at 2.8v @ 273 mhz and 2.7v @ 258 mhz.

Just a question, how much performance is gained through using a brainpower 808 PCB over the standard DDR reference design?

Look again, One of the screen shots is of 275mhz the others are at 257mhz what I'm running right now.

Mine top out at 276mhz and at 277mhz I get random errors, I've not really tried playing with them yet. I got the Abit AN8 SLI on monday and a 4600+ that I've been paying with (the Abit stinks btw !) and have spent all my time setting that up and tearing it down to put the DFI NF4 back in ! lol

for me its:

260mhz 3-4-4-8 2.8v 8errors
265mhz 3-4-4-8 2.8v 60errors
270mhz 3-4-4-8 2.8v too many errors :(

Try 2.7v or even 2.6v

I'm error free up to 276mhz in windows, I've not even played with memtest86

Also you may want to switch the sticks around

I wanted 278 or 279 stable 1:1 would be nice...

gotta keep playing with it though. too much volts is not good, more memtest errors... keep the volts low with this stuff.

I just used memtest for windows to verify, I'll run memtest86 tomorrow when I start tweaking.

If you can run windows memtest for 200% there's no need to run memtest86 :2cents:

Well this is as high as it goes with optimized defaults, haven't played with Tref or drive strength or any thing else for that matter ! lol

278mhz 3-4-4-8 1t @ 2.7v, I get errors with 2.8v regardless of timmings or clock.

It errors in windows at anything above 276mhz at 9x multi, same problem I had with the Ballistix 2x1gig. IMO my memory controller just isnt up to the test.

Nice results... gonna go retest mine tonight - I'd like to hit 276 - 278 1:1 with these. Right now 273 is ok but I want more :p:

Even if you can pass memtest86 without errors you may still encounter problems in windows. I usually test first with memtest86 just to make sure I don't corrumpt my windows install, and then do final testing with memtest for windows and super pi.

More volts has worked for me though

Previously errors in memtest #5 .. so i swapped the sticks around like major said

This helped.. i had no errors until 26mins...that was at 265 3-4-4-8 2.7v

Now i increased the volts to 2.8v and im currently at 34min and no errors


Memtest is full proof.. If is passes that, it will handle anything you throw at it.. Also, if it fails, i know it wont corrupt my windows install

Mine is looking to be maxed at 274 3-4-4-8 @ 2.7v.

Any higher shows memtest errors.

Have you tried any different Tref or drive strengths yet ?

If you have time do a cpuz cert and pi32 so we can post your results in Enjoy's 2x1gig OC database. I'm going to play with it again after work today and try to get 274-276mhz posted.

I'm putting my Ballistix in my gaming rig with the X2 4600+ today and start OCing it, I'm hopeing it has a better controller than my 4400+ and maybe able to hit 290mhz with it since they are memtest86 stable up to that.

I didn't bother with the yellow dimms, I've not had much success with the yellow dimms even with UTT and BH.

Yea, the yellow dimms suck. My BH6 drastically prefers the orange, especially at high voltages.

look carefully at the first picture major gave us. it's neither BP nor JEDEC reference pcb.. but a micron pcb. check out the similarities between my crucial value stick and the bottom edge of the ocz ddr500. if it's a micron pcb, this also means the same 5b D chips that crucial is using in the ballistix, so overclocking should be very similar between the two.

Definetly not Micron chips ;)

I thought they would be Micron chips when I purchased them based on the timmings. I PMed Tony "bigtoe" and he told me they were samsung chips. I also looked under the HS to check if I could see the small half cirlce that the Micorn have on the edge of the chips and its not there.

Also the PCB is a brain power BP808, I'll take a pic later on tonight of the pcb.

2.85V max on these, as I posted over at the OCZ forums its best to tweak in tiny steps on the vdimm, using a modded 3.3v line on your psu or a powerstream's 3.3v pot to fine tune will help.

They do get hot so remember a fan on them.

I didn't gain anything from going from 2.7v to 2.8v, in fact I got errors @ 2.8v.

I'm running them fine at 2.6v and IMO they would do up to 270mhz like that.

Major, get me a cpu-z valid for your OCZ top.

I ran it at 275x10, If I could get 278x10 or more I would run it 24/7 at that but at 2750 I'm giving up 75mhz on my processor OC and thats more than I'd like to sacrifice. But it sure sounds nice 280x10 would be ideal but I don't think my X2 4400+ can handle that, it couldn't with the ballistix.

Great review, but I'm still looking for a 2GB vs. 1GB comparison that compares the minimum FPS when playing a game, not the average. I think this is where 2GB would have its biggest advantage especially in RAM heavy games such as BF2.

I will try to add some more with FRAPS and timedemos and see what the results are. I dont know if the minimums will actually jump or if gameplay is just smoother having more memory to avoid HD caching. It will be interesting, gimme a few days and I'll update the review with some numbers that might help.

These sticks are good but the ballistix tracer seem to be the more complete package.. lower volts, tighter timings, higher bandwidth and even cheaper from where ill be getting them, which will be sometime next week

The problem with those Ballistix is they don't come in a matched set, instead your left buying 2 sep stix....I don't like that idea. The OCZ comes in matched pairs as true duel channel ram should. Correct me if I'm wronge :confused:

You're wrong. The Ballistix aren't 'matched' per se, but all modules should work together anyway, they are the exact same type of memory after all. No doubt OCZ just tests the two together for an extremely short amount of time just for truth in advertising laws, the sticks will run together and they know that without testing.

The ozc works better with the ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe so I'm choosing this ram hands down. It's too bad the Ballistix is no good for my MOBO :( I guess thats why OCZ is the best :rolleyes:

I know you guys seem to prefer the Crucial but these OCZ modules seem to have something quite sweet about them. This was a quick and dirty test as i have been playing with a new motherboard and decided to test a 3000+ and 2gigs of ram.

1000mhz overclock at 311fsb 1.6V aircooled with a FX55 heatsink(OEM) and 2gigs of 4000Gold in 166 mode for around 253fsb or so 3-4-3 at 2.65Vdimm.
Now i know its not prime but please take a note of the bandwidth, this is pretty healthy for such slack timings.

Tony, I think everyone should remember that obtaining high HTT with any 2x1gig configuration is totally dependent on the memory controller.

Even though I was able to run the ballistix at a high HTT with a low multi, it is far from stable using the higher multis of 11x or 12x at the same memory clock. I've tested it with my San Diego 3700+, my 4600+, and my 4400+ and all of them had to be run at 2t with high memory clocks of over 270mhz or so.

I guess what I'm trying to get accross, if you look at my sig you will see I'm running the OCZ and the Ballistix at a much lower Mhz with a high multi. When you take the A64 controller into account the OCZ is on par with the Ballistix. I think the only expections would be if you have an outstanding controller (FX55, FX57 for example) and can run 2x1gig at over 270mhz without issues.

I'm thinking about getting a second set of OCZ PC4000 for my work rig to give me 4gigs total. :D

Would that have anything to do with the "new" motherboard ;) you are testing, or was the bandwidth that high with the DFI nf4 too?

looks like something funny goin on with your memtest. i wouldnt trust that bandwidth. Its also missing information. It doesnt show the memory speed or what chipset like my memtest86 1.60 does. Ive tried about every config i can think of, including yours, and i cant get close to 3500 bandwidth. Only thing i can think of, if that is correct, is that new unnamed mobo your usin. How about some windows screenies to verify that bandwidth. :)

Board is a Halibut reference board as EMC2 mentioned. The fact that the memory can only give the bandwidth the on die memory controller lets it kind of eliminates the board as the cause of the high bandwidth.All A64 boards will give very close to the same bandwidth at the same timings etc as the memory is tied directly to the CPU.

Next up I have never used Photoshop on a bench screenie, i work for OCZ yes, but I also persue only the absolute truth when it comes to memory benches, i have never BS's anyone on a forum with memory benches and never will. Please check my posts, you will see OCZ thru myself and thru Ryan have always been completely open about our products and lay the info on the line.

I resent the fact that you would feel i photoshopped a memtest screenie :mad:

Tony I don't think they were refering to the memory bandwidth, only the mb info and as pointed out by EMC2 it wouldn't be displayed anyway if Memtest didn't recongize the bios info.

I can personally vouch for Tony, I've never seen him post anything that was less than truthfull or that was misleading. Just the oppisite I find that he goes out of his way to shed some insight into what is to come from OCZ and resolve issues with OCZ products.

Yea, Tony is a standup guy, he's given me assistance with memory issues I've had, he's the best memory guru I will ever know - if you are reading this thread please understand I wasnt indicating he was photoshopping the results, I thought he removed the chipset and any motherboard information due to NDAs that we sometimes have to deal with.

Dean, my issue was not really with you but best to let it drop now.

The memtest issue is that X86 don't have the chipset info as yet so memtest does not record what the registers are setting, it does however record bandwidth correctly as i have seen the same with the NF4 also.

I actually feel interleaving may be working more efficiently which shows much better bandwidth as a result, i actually had over 3k with a Sandiego with 2gigs and on the same exact settings with a 1gig kit 2800+ was all i got so there looks to be something with running 2gigs over 2 dimms.

Ofcourse it may be just some OCZ magic in the SPD, i will have to ask later ;)

For those who wanted a windows sandra bench here ya go. 254fsb on the mem 3-4-4-5, weird thing is 3-4-3-5 gave the same results but was just not quite as stable...

Your sandra score is buffered, its dependent on L2 cache and processor speed. The memtest86 is unbuffered, just raw memory bandwidth

I was running in memtest86, i posted a sandra glory benchmark for you and we are real close but you are running 11x254 and I was running 311x9 in 166 mode, try your board the same way and see what you get in sandra. Please run an unbuffered also as this is closer to real bandwidth than the bloated bus dependant buffered bench.

One point a few have failed to notice is that the 2gig kits seem to give more bandwidth than the 1gig kits....

Tony, have you tried running 4x1gig OCZ PC4000 on DFI NF4 ? I'd like to see some results with that as I'm concidering going with a second set for my work rig. I think it would benifit from as much memory as I can throw at it.

I don't trust Memtest bandwidth anymore, with my 3200+ Venice I would get 3300MB+ in Memtest at 10x250, the same exact settings with my FX-55 and 3700+ don't even get me 3000MB in Memtest, even at 11x250 its under 2900MB.

Memtest is still cache dependant like most bandwidth benches, all you can do is run the same cpu and run benches back to back to make a comparison.

I can tell you I have seen over3K easy with a sandiego using a 2gig kit, pull the 2gig out, put a 1gig in and 2700 was reported. There are gains to be made with 2gigs over 2dimms over a 2dimm 1gig kit thats for sure.

I had a feeling you would be back to DFI, I've been down that ABIT road before and it does suck :rolleyes: I think the new Grouper board will be a MUCH better option to play with.

pretty much yes, some may need 3-3-3, some are getting lucky and seeing 3-3-3 at 250+ also

Well 3500+ isnt that much bandwidth in memtest. But the bigger the banks on the memory the more bandwidth you get, I couldnt break 3500MB/s with 2x256BH-5 evven at 270Mhz, but with 2x512MB UTT BH-5 I can get 3500 with just 3.43v, and 261Mhz. And this is at 2-2-2-6-7-12 as well. 1M stable too. :D

Anyway, my point is that bank interlaving gets more efficiant the more ram you have. So 2x1GB would be faster than 2x512 and that is mush quicker than 2x256. This may also be why 2x1GB cannot clock very well, and are extremly memcontroller dependant.

It can be taken up to 2.9 volts... I thought it was 2.8 like a lot of other OCZ RAM, but I had a look on their site, and its 2.9...
