Intel quietly adds DRM to new chips

Microsoft and the entertainment industry's holy grail of controlling copyright through the motherboard has moved a step closer with Intel Corp. now embedding digital rights management within in its latest dual-core processor Pentium D and accompanying 945 chipset.

Officially launched worldwide on the May 26, the new offerings come DRM-enabled and will, at least in theory, allow copyright holders to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted materials from the motherboard rather than through the operating system as is currently the case.

While Intel steered clear of mentioning the new DRM technology at its Australian launch of the new products, Intel's Australian technical manager Graham Tucker publicly confirmed Microsoft-flavored DRM technology will be a feature of Pentium D and 945.

"[The] 945g [chipset] supports DRM, it helps implement Microsoft's DRM ... but it supports DRM looking forward," Tucker said, adding the DRM technology would not be able to be applied retrospectively to media or files that did not interoperate with the new technology.

However, Tucker ducked questions regarding technical details of how embedded DRM would work saying it was not in the interests of his company to spell out how the technology in the interests of security.

The situation presents an interesting dilemma for IT security managers as they may now be beholden to hardware-embedded security over which they have little say, information or control.

Conversely, Intel is heavily promoting what it calls "active management technology" (AMT) in the new chips as a major plus for system administrators and enterprise IT. Understood to be a sub-operating system residing in the chip's firmware, AMT will allow administrators to both monitor or control individual machines independent of an operating system.

Additionally, AMT also features what Intel calls "IDE redirection" which will allow administrators to remotely enable, disable or format or configure individual drives and reload operating systems and software from remote locations, again independent of operating systems. Both AMT and IDE control are enabled by a new network interface controller.

"We all know our [operating system] friends don't crash that often, but it does happen," Tucker said.

Intel's reticence to speak publicly about what lies under the hood of its latest firmware technology has also prompted calls to come clean from IT security experts, including Queensland University of Technology's assistant dean for strategy and innovation, IT faculty, Bill Caelli.

"It's a dual use technology. It's got uses and misuses. Intel has to answer what guarantees it is prepared to give that home users are safe from hackers. Not maybes, guarantees".

Caelli said it was "critical Intel comes clean" about how the current DRM technology is embedded into the new CPU and chipset offering.

Microsoft was unavailable for comment at press time.

The way it is implemented, I dont believe it needs any specific software for it to work.

Oh please, Intel can't stop piracy with this crappy technology. Me and some buddies are already working on DRM-breaking code. I'll get my hands on this chipset/CPU asap and see if my code actually works. I've already placed my bet that other programmers are working on it too. I wonder when Intel will implement TCPA. Hopefully AMD won't follow Intel's Microsoft/MPAA/etc etc-loving attitude. Intel screwed up big this time.

The DRM does not worry me at all, however the above quote does. This is gonna be a hackers best dream come true. This is a none-issue for End Users but for large firms and the business-sector, this could be a problem.

the more news i read the more i hate intel, i cant wait till i can build my new rig and get me a diego or venice. in the end, pirates will alwasy find a way around things though.

woops, there went my thoughts of playing with some intel hardware... until further notice.

if DRM is indeed in the CPU itself, then I indeed know what hardware I won't be bothering with in the future.
with all this privacy crap snooping into my hardware and OS, and games, I am already sick of it... when I can put my own CD, into my own CD drive, copy it to my own computer, then have a big "CANNOT TRANSFER" sign pop up, when I try to put my own CD onto my own Ipod... then I get pissed.

they are trying to control every single thing you do with your stuff.
pretty soon I won't be suprised if they sell stereos that stop working after 9 PM, and computers, that require a blood sample before they turn on... :(

after all, wasn't MS trying to do this exact same thing with thier "Palladium" thing in the Longhorn OS??

The answer is: don't use Intel's new CPU/Chipset, and use Linux. Go completely against the Wintel specification. M$ will be out of business, and so will Intel. No more DRM.

Unfortunately Wintel is quite a big monster and you canâ€:banana: slay it just liek that. Becides we have to many lazy people around on earth, since they find Linux to be a crapy thing, wich it isnt! And they're lazy because they cannot spend couple hours in order to be able to configure it :slapass: . You know what I tell them, you try configuring Windows 3.1 or older :fact: .

I've already converted at least 100 people I know to the Linux side, and alot of them to AMD :) Now, a copy of Windows XP Pro costs what, £200? 200 * 100 = a £20,000 loss to Microsoft. That's not really significant to a corporation with a few hundred BILLION dollars, but it's a start!

Pff, loads of games can be ran on Linux natively. And don't you go telling me they suck, because I can say that Quake 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Doom 3 DO NOT suck. Plus, if you pay £1 a month, you can get Cedega/WinEX and play Half-Life 2, Half-Life 1, Far Cry, and loads of other games at nearly native speeds.

Grandma can't install linux neither can 95% of the population which pretty much precludes any kind of real user or support base. No im afriad MS and intel is here to stay and stay dominate. The stuffs free and they can't give it away (linux). Did people switch with intel's unique precessor IDs? With MS writting your ID's into every DOC they make? DRM will be the same.

Might be a noob question but can you get around this by not using a third-party pci or pci-e network card?

that is the problem ppl that drop 1k plus into vid cards and dual core/fx55 wont the FASTEST speeds possible and as of right now Linux CANNOT compete with windows for games...the best I have seen comes withen something like 7% and unless you are on top end hardware and don't care if you take the hit then it is a BIG deal...

The thing that will piss me off is when I go to rip a CD to MY library no piracy intented and it wont let me or when I go to put something on my MP3 player and it wont that is when Intel and EVEN AMD and anything else that is connected is going to get a BIG BIG and I mean F*CKING BIG letter by millions of people or so help me!!!

Intel: No "unannounced" DRM technology in Pentium D processors

Intel reacted to accusations the new dual-core Pentium D processors would integrate new technologies to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted materials. Intel spokeswoman Kari Skoog said the reports were "wrong" and that "there are no unannounced DRM technologies implemented in the Intel Pentium D processor or in the new Intel 945 Express chipset."
