New Thermochill 120.3 Shrouds

To make the beast even beastlier (if that's possible?) I just received my 2 new shrouds for my 120.3 ordered from here: http://store.over-clock.com/ThermoChill.html They provide 40mm distance from fan to rad, old shrouds were a joke in comparrison, maybe 10mm. Fans seem quieter and temps seem very good. Now for some pics:

Wow... is your radiator effectiveness now less than 0.015 C/W with that new shroud and those 6 fans at 12V? :slobber:


You sure have got an amazing setup... mountainmods.com case, Iwaki RD-30 (at 18V?), Storm G5 (you'll get a G6 in the future? :D ), a 120.3 with a big shroud and 6 Sanyo Denki San Ace fans (at 7V?), a T-line, a GPU-block I don't recognise so fast (Silverprop?), and some distilled water + HydrX?


And of course a great overclock. :toast:

As always an awesome setup niksub. Did your overclock improve with the shroud? And what fans are those and at what voltage?

The .015 C/W was with only 3 fans... Guessing here, but with my 6 and these shrouds would likely be at .011 or so? RD-30 is at 24v, fans at 7v, and yes, Fusion HL GPU block.

Fans are Sanyo Denki's. OC impoved due to new CPU :D My 2 other CPU's maxed out at 4.3 and 4.2, this one is destined for 5Ghz on water. ;)

What volts on those fans? 7v? If 12v they must be loud no?

Oh and I love how you have all this expensive equipment, and a 9800 XT. :P

7v yes mostly. Yeah, well my 9800XT fried, lol. This is a 9800 Pro hehe. More than I need though, I only play WOW and battle.net

WOW is quite intensive I here though. I bet your cpu makes up for a lot though hehe. I have a X800 XT PE that does 590/590 on stock cooling/stock volts that I'd let go for the right price hehe. :)

G5 block whered you get that on LR website theyre only on G4 and their sold out =(. I really want a G5 or G6.

Nikhsub1... I was wondering how much it cost total plus shipping for them? You had these shipped to the US right? I was thining of ordering a pair for my 120.3 also.

Interesting. Looks like we won't see cathar's next block till atleast G7 then and it'll have to be more cost-effective than G6 if it will enter production as G6 is in cathar's words too complex and not cost effective, especially for the relatively meager performance gains. I'm eager for G7. :toast:

That shop is awesome when living in Denmark shipping price for that shroud is 0,92£ the national danish shipping price for the same is 4,65£! I have just ordered one for mine :) When I look at your results it seems as a good idea ;)

So there is no confusion, the shrouds did not create the OC... That is a new CPU that went into the rig at the same time as the shrouds. IIRC, the 2 shrouds with shipping from UK to me were about $60 or so, not cheap.

that = £30.... so not too bad, thats like £10 shipping... it costs £6 for a UK courier ....

I thought that push/pull configuration showed no performance gain rather then just pull or just push.

No, there are gains they are just minimal. I have the space so I do push and pull. The nice thing is that push/pull at 7v is equal to pull at 12v so my way is quieter.

do any retailers sell decent shrouds for 120.2 heater cores?

Decent? The old ones or how? And where in the world? I'm going to make the push and pull as well, a fan just cost's 10£ or ~17$ so it's a little expensive to get 6 fans..

i live in cali, so shipping for UK for a cheap item is a big rip off.. so any good US retailers for good metal shrouds?

hmmm....90 degree bends on the sides. the finish, fan cutouts and amount of standoff look familiar. :)

are the corners seam welded or press fit?
are there dividers between the fans to separate the shroud into multiple chambers or is it one open chamber?

I have a shroud proto for that rad but I am still tweaking it (and the one for the BIX/BIP series). They should be available before too much longer as I am down to squeezing the last elusive bit of cooling performance out of them now. :)

In any event, it looks well made and definitely an improvement over the stock shroud. :thumbsup:

Weapon I'm not sure... corners seem bent, not welded or press fit, but then, I'm no metal master. They are definately open chamber. One word of advice, take careful note of the BARBED side of the rad... I went through hell getting it to fit, the shroud is like 1/2" taller than it should be, it hits the round metal bit on the outside of the threads where the barbs screw in. I had to cut the shroud under each barb. Even then, the tubing was a nightmare to get on the barbs as the barbs are too close to the top of the shroud. Oh, and a new OC :D

They're the shroud drawings I put on www.overclockers.com before christmas... I just got em made up as got sick of folks emailing asking if we could make em. So we did. (http://www.overclockers.com/tips1183/ - 16th September 2004)

Both drawings (for HE120.2 and 120.3) were also put on Thermochill.com on the same day. (http://www.thermochill.com/guides.php)

The design was literally just make a box, cut some fan holes out. Attach. Fabricated in the easiest way, punch, fold, weld the corners, paint (powder coat in this case). Mounting holes all align to original shrouds' holes. Only reason they were designed in the firstplace was cos someone asked how to make a shroud, so I did em that design and told em to get some good stiff card. Twas a 5 minute off the top of me head job....

I should tell you Marci that because of Niksub, I've been wanting a Thermochill 120.3 more and more. He makes them look so sexy and powerful. My two favorite rads/cores in watercooling now are Weapon's Monster Core and your Thermochill 120.3...I think you should put Nik on the payroll. ;)

Naw, no need for payroll but a single pass 120.3 would be REALLY good :D Hint hint!

Got mine today, got kinda disapointed, none of the holes matched if it was to be used on the same side as the shrouds :( Had to make the holes longer for it to fit, and now it is fitting nicely.. But a little crappy that it didn't fit from scratch..
Didn't want to send it back as that would end up being about the same as the rpice for a new one :S
Edit: Just saw the technical drawing, my holes where only 7,5 mm and should be 19mm.. So it was a fabrication error..

whoa those look nice, do these provide better performance overall? I have the stock shrouds and I had to mod them to make my fans fit on :|
