Multi problems with Dothan + ct-479 on p4c800-e

I Flashed to 1021 bios for p4c800-e, installed adapter and dothan 760 533 fsb processor, set jumper pins for 533 fsb cpu, and this is what I get:

It boots with 6x multi and I cant seem to find anyway to change it. In the bios, it show the cpu ratio as LOCKED :( any ideas?

I figured it would at least boot with the 15 multi which I believe is def. for pentium m 760 533 dothan, but no luck.

I have a p4p800 here I can try it on too, but I will need to force flash it to the p4p800se bios. This is possible, no?

What a nice underclock :woot:

Props goes to zawanao, at EOCF, who showed me the ways. On the 'Function' pull-down menu, click on 'MSR Editor'. Read address 0x0000199. The setting for EAX will be 0x0000xxyy, with xx being hex for the multiplier, and yy being inverted hex for VID. I haven't personally been able to get VID changes to reflect against actual vcore, but multi adjustment will change....at least in Windows.

Multis, for those who aren't savvy in hex (which, I'm not...I use an online converter :D):
multi - hex
6 - 6
7 - 7
8 - 8
9 - 9
10 - a
11 - b
12 - c
13 - d
14 - e
15 - f
16 - 10
17 - 11
18 - 12
19 - 13
20 - 14
...and so on. So, it would be written 0x0000c20 for a x12 multi.

There's no G in hex dude. They stop at F, which is 15 ;)

It is still a little unclear to me....
I can make the value under eax change to hex for whatever multi I want, but the multi does not change in windows.

Hmm...I don't know. The change would take effect, once written through crystal cpuid, for me. I got the impression that it wasn't a physical change, but rather a "software" change only, but it would reflect in CPU-Z at least.

On the processor box it states that the chip runs in performance mode(2ghz/1.35v) and also battery optimized mode(800mhz/.998v)

I wonder if raising vcore would solve this. Maybe when the chip senses low voltage, it throttles down?? Havent seen this in any dothan threads yet though.

looking over this thread and seeing that i will be doing the same thing i was wondering, do you think that i will run in to those same issues. Although i am using the P4C 800 deluxe E.

You will have to first flash to 1021 without the adapter installed (i.e. w/ a northwood or prescott installed). I think I remember seeing that fugger and possibly one or two others, ran into problems on initial flash, and had to re-flash w/ the adapter installed to clear it up.

And i havent gotten the chip yet but he said move a jumper i beilive for a 533 where xactly would that be

If you look at a picture of the adapter, you will see. ;) There are two jumpers and a FDD power connector on the board. Those jumpers dictate FSB.

Buy a cheap Celeron, or something and then just take it back the day after. Thats what I'm doing when i get mine Dothan Set-Up.

doubt this has anything to do with it...but go to start/control panel/ power options and change it to a desktop cpu...still doubt it has anything to do with it...but I'll say it anyway :)

no kidding. If I can't change my multiplier AND have to flash the bios with some P4 then I'm looking at a long road of difficulties. (I guess I can just buy that cheap Celeron but I don't want to have to keep doing it over and over again to reflash the bios over and over again :stick: ) Of course, I havn't heard of anyone else having problems with this - hopefully my build won't have any problems either.

I was thinking about buying one of these just for the sake of flashing the board. After everything is all good and kosher with the Dothan, I'll just slang it on ebay.

you'd be better off spending the extra dough and getting one from a retailer like CompUSA, then getting a nice fat refund that just happens to be equivalant to what you paid for it. :)

I already tried the eist tool with no luck. I will try rmclock.

I bought a prescott 3.0e eo stepping to flash the board over to 1021 initially. THen I put the, dothan in and it booted and went to post just fine. I should reflash the 1021 bios with the dothan installed and see if this helps. The chip seems to be locked from within bios. Still thinking a vmod will "wake it up".

In the mean time, I put the prescott 3.0e on DI just to see what it would do. All I can say is WOW!! these 3.0e EO's are really nice clockers. Hoping to break 26sec superpi 1m @5ghz+ on a barebones p4p800 by sunday. I'm at mid 27's now with 328x15 5/4divider 5-2-2-2 pat enabled and 1.55vcore (no vcore mod yet)

I tired RMClock, and got x6 multi, but with no "real" results (only "software" results...). I belive TAM or NewBeetle (whichever of them had this same setup) had a lowered multi for 21s superpi, and I have seen a member at EOCF w/ a lower multi @ 282 mhz FSB, which he stated he achieved through crystal cpuid.

I will have to try Crow's suggestion....I would feel extremely foolish if that's all it was. :slapass:

Hope we can get this cracked....and nice results on the 3.0 ^ k|ngp|n. :)

:edit: NewBeetle has P4C + ct-479, w/ various multis: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...165#post839165 (post #163)....so, it is doable....

:edit edit: In doing some more searching around, my problem probably lies in the fact that I have 400 mhz FSB dothan, which doesn't seem capable of achieving higher FSB, regardless of multiplier. So, hope you guys have better luck.

Re-flashed 1021 w/ the latest version of afudos, then reflashed with dothan installed. Dothan is still locked in bios, but not in software. Crystal cpuid works great for changing multis in windows. Setfsb works very well for changing clocks in windows too. To get 1:1, 166fsb set from bios was needed along with auto setting on ram. 200fsb set from bios makes 400 divider become available in dram settings. Overclocking went smooth once it got locked into 1:1.
I wish I had more time to spend with it this weekend :(
Overall impression is its very fast and feels just like fx55 on desktop. I was able to install win2k3 at 166x15 without a hitch. Nearly 600mhz overclock benching on air with def vcore is nice too.
I have some other p4p boards that clock better here that I want to try it on. Only p4p800se is supported though atm.

Still going strong on ct-479 alminum heatsink.....Im trying to get into the 26.xx for 1m on air using this asus def hsf for the adapter.

for sure....If you are into 1mpi (which I shamelessly am), then you can't go wrong with dothan lol... Although I will be 3d'ing it not too long from now w/xtpe and dual cascade ;). Now that will be interesting.

nearly 2.7ghz for 1mpi on this craptastic ct-479 aluminum cooler lol.

26.**sec 1mpi would be easy as pie :) with around 245x11(2695mhz). I can run ram up to 260-270 stable, but not the fsb of the cpu. It walls at 232fsb no matter what multi. I'm hoping some extreme cold will take care of that...it could just be a chip limitation of mine though. I also suspect it may have to do with the way the chip overlclocks in 1:1 depending on how you set fsb in bios.

You have to boot atleast with 200FSB to change NB Strap from 400FSB mode to 533FSB (200FSB boot) or 800FSB (201FSB or higher boot). When system is booted up with less than 200FSB, 400FSB Strap mode is used. With 400FSB Strap your motherboard will max out at ~ 230FSB. When the Strap is changed to 533FSB or 800FSB mode, you board will be able to run 30MHz - 50MHz higher FSB than now.

Unfortunately you can´t do this with 760 chip, without phase or C02/LN2 cooling, since the multiplier can´t be adjusted from the bios. Unless your cpu is able to run at 3GHz (15x200) speeds with air ;)

I suspected that was the case. With DI, 200x15 should be no problem for boot up.

you had to get to 200fsb to lock in at a 1:1 in bios right, but did your pc post with those settings i cant get it to go much past 166fsb with out kicking the can(in bios)

I may be able to help here, i think I found a way of forcing the 533 strap on the P4C800e but I have not tested the bios file.

When I modded the p4p800D bios witht he p4p8x boot block the board was running 533 strap by default all the time to force PAT, only issue was none of the dividers on the ram worked and you are forced to run 1:1.

So i then looked at the changes in HEX from the stock P4p800 to the modded bootblock version and was able to apply the changes directly. This may be just what we need.

Im away on holiday so don't PM for the bios...its not here and its not tested but i do now have the CT-479 and will try and get the bootblock modded to 533 by default for us all.

If no joy i will beg Asus again to add the strap option like the IC7 has.

I cooked up a pretty decent mount for my chilly1 container using the stock p4 bracket and adapter card with hooks and springs....working good so far I think,but need to recheck contact to be 100% sure. I shimed the dothan with some really thin foam tape to cushion the container around the core.
Bios temps were reporting -30c on p4p800se with chip at 1.6v. Does this sound about right for -64 to -66c on container? I guess I'll know for sure when I re-check my contact. It was tricky at first to get the container centered nicely over the core. I still may have not got it dead on.

and here were some 1m runs ......my dumbass knocked the solder joint loose on my vcore mod while it was on :(.. so only 1.56-1.58vcore under load available. Will re-attach the mod tonight and try to get in some runs(2am).
Cpu would not run faster than 3.16ghz with 1.58v... I'm thinking it was vcore(lack of 1.6+) holding it back.....but it easily could have been poor contact. I did manage to run fsb at 316 which ended up being my best score :)

LOL...I was able to beat my cascade cooled fx-55 clocked at 278x13 with only 3.16ghz and 253 ram speed. With 1.6-1.7vcore load and better contact maybe... Im thinking low 22's...maybe break into high 21's on DI with high mem + mobo speeds + max ghz. I'll give it a shot before I use ln2.

I have a 2nd hand p4p800-vm for use with a ct479 but i dont know what the vid settings in the bios is for i tried searching but so far nothing. I downloaded the manual from asus but it didnt cover the newer version of the bios with the vid settings. Can i use this to increase the vcore.

Nice OC k|ngp|n to answer a question from your first post the bios from the p4p800-se will not work in the p4p800 but the p4p800-vm bios will but as the vm uses intel lan the p4p800 3com gigabit lan will not work and it stopped pci lan cards from working too.

There has been a lot of talk about the new San Diego's and Venice's over the last months how well can/will they clock etc but these Dothans dont half make the situation differently.

Im getting a Single Phase unit soon and very very tempted to get a Dothan and P4C800-E setup. It sure would fly on phase :D

Yes I learned this the hard way. I could not get my p4p800 to force flash to p4p800se. I tried everything I could and corrupted the boot block on every spare bios chip I had here :(

thanx bennah..I REALLY like this kit alot. For everyday use stuff like ripping, encoding, burning, and installing and moving large files it flies. Havent done a lick of 3d benches or gaming yet though....soon. Hope it's the same way.

Tried those P4P8X bootblock tricks yesterday, and it still uses 400FSB Strap when system is booted up with less than 200FSB,

All the testing didn´t go to waste, since I managed to get CPU Vcore adjust for Dothans ;) The voltage is adjustable between 1.5V - 1.6V :)

When you make the vcore mod for P4C800, you will be able to get vcore up to 2V+.

why not give it a cascade try?

Hm, 2vcore+ to a Dothan... that has got to be some incentive to push the little dothan to the edge ;)

The Stilt do you know what the vid cmos settings do on the p4p800-vm ?
There is not alot of info when searching the net on the vid cmos settings.

I gave it another go last night with the p4p800se vmodded, and the chip will not BENCHMARK faster than 3.19 ghz on DI no matter what voltage. It can go to desktop at 3.2+, but just can't push the numbers.

LOL.....my mounting is crude as hell, but it worked for my testing.
It just may be not that great of a chip for what I need it to do :(
I tried every possbile combination of dividers/multi's/fsb's with no luck.
Board is stable to 325, ram is stable to 270.
I took it all the way up to 1.75v and the stability went out the window.
This chip really seems to like around 1.61vcore and not a bit more with my temps (DI).
My contact was perfect and temps were reading -111 in bios(as soon as they got below -39c, it just went to -111c which is obviously a bug.
My expectations were a little higher for DI...maybe 3250-3300mhz.
...but overall it still is a killer little chip on air and @-30 to-40c. I may try another one just to see if it clocks any better.

time for ln2, and nice insulation of the adapter:)

That's it, I can't take it anymore.. MUST BUY A DOTHAN!

Im hoping for my first LN2 session on monday. I found a supplier 10 minutes away that will sell me whatever I need @ 3.00/liter and let me use on of their dewars for only $100.00 cc deposit for first few times, than no deposit once they get to know me :rocker: .

Tried 2 760 dothans now on a modded p4p800-se and modded p4c800-e dlx on DI with chilly's container, and I still cannot f'ing break 3.2ghz for pi.
Both chips walled around 3.15ghz DI on p4p and a little less on p4c. One chip did it@1.4v, the other needed 1.55v. Container base temps barely budge under load and my contact is great. ALthough after looking at the base I noticed some tiny pits in copper right where core imprint is. Should really lap those out as they could be creating hotspots on the core.
Work has kept me from giving it 100% though. I have all weekend to get this thing figured out. I have to be missing something here. Could just below 3200mhz for benching just be the limit on my chips at -68c? Could be psu related. Gonna grab a x850xtpe agp card too for some 3d. That should be alot of fun. These things do very well in pifast too btw.
