Official release of venice and diego on April 15th!

i thought it was known, but a trip to the venice watch thread told me otherwise.

this is directly from AMD.
the 4th was the NDA lift date, and the 15th of april is the official release date for venice and diego.


also, the reason for the winchester cold bug is the memory controller, and AMD *IS* working to fix this. :D

they do know, and are fixing it.

edit: more info i should add: some venice and san diego chips will have issues with cold temps. the problem is not fully fixed yet but as i said, AMD is trying to fix it. so it's likely going to be hit or miss on venice/diego chips working in the cold for now

that i can not confirm, and nothing was said about the fx. but i think its pretty soon. by my own speculation: inside 2 months for sure.. maybe less than a month away. :) /speculation

So AMD is working on the cold bug. Its great that they're working on a problem that would only be a problem for very small group of people. :confused: I'm happy with my Winchester but I'll be anxiously awaiting confirmation of the fix so I can start shopping. :) Thanks for the update.

it wasnt an article. it was amd who said it. my source asked not to be named but he was chatting with amd and thes tompics came up and these are the answers given by amd.

15th as in i think they shipped already cuz a few places have them already.(local stores only, they likely dont know they are a differant chip)

i think on the 15th places like newegg will be able to have them on their site for sale.

IMO this is more speculation, this is the 3rd thread or so with somebody who spoke with somebody who spoke with AMD, etc. I'm waiting out on a Venice just like everybody else, but I've had everything but my processor ready for my new PC since the beginning of April. I'm about to just buy a dud Winny for $120 and deal with it for 1-2 months until I can actually get my hands on a new chip.

Cannot be viewed as "Answers given by AMD." If the information is not publically released, you should not be advertising it as such. The validity of this "source" seems sketchy at best.

lol seeing as how getting to 20C would be an ungodly accomplishment for me I don't think I'll have to worry about the cold bug :p

That is insane and mighty cool of AMD to work on something which a very few amount of people even can achieve....that's why I love AMD, they really try to make the best CPU's for their users.

Wasnt there a big plan for everybody to not buy these processors until a month has gone buy so the supply/demand kicks in and they are cheaper :D

So whats the over/under on how many XS member's heads will explode on the 15th when Newegg's last entry in the processor core menu is still a Winchester? ;)

so do i order a fx55 thats listed as 90nm D0 but seems to have been mispriced at £340ish, instead of the normal £550 they are in the uk. or do i order the 3500+ E4 rev, listed at £215ish, with winnies going for £180 here. Or more likely its a choice between that FX55 or waiting a couple weeks to get one that will probably be about the same price as a winnie, other stores will be cheaper for sure here. just that mispricing, £340 for a fx 55 on new die size , could clock like crazy.

I think release date for europe MIGHT be the 18th as elara in ireland says they will have them in stock by that day.

Now I am a bit unsure if I should switch my order to a 3500/3700 San Diego. I have a 3500 Venice on preorder at the moment. Any suggestions?

I'm waiting for early released batch of fx57....probly it will be the same like fx55 0437 to 42 vs. 0502 and up....which earlier batches of production oc. better than the newer 05 ones.

The Vinice sounds good, but...I'm gonna wait until the desktop dual cores show up in June before I make my descision. I guess my FX-55 will have to do me until then... :rolleyes: :p:

Dual cores won't be suited for enthusiast use for quite some time. Sure, they'll be excellent for multitasking, but there will not be enough multi-threaded applications for them to be worth an upgrade.

well remember that a dual core at 2.2ghz will be slightly faster single threaded apps than a 2.2ghz single core, no matter what.. and for the things that are multithreaded, it'll be way faster. it's a win win situation

I don't think cache plays too big of a role for distributed computing applications. But with two cores, you can run two instances of D2OL simultaneously. Anyway, it's time for you to join the team. Hurry up and visit the D2OL section. :slapass: :D

Um that doesn't make much sense at all. unless the app is multitasked it won't use the second core AT ALL. Also where did you get this info? Or did you just post it as an opinion?

they are working on making a better controller that doesnt fail under cold temps.

they would implement this on new 90nm chips, like the venice and san diego.

the fact that several venice ES chips or early slips have been proven to work under cold temps shows there is at least some imporovment in the IMC already. hopefully there will be more as time goes on.

Making a new winchester rev doesn't make sense with the Venice out so I suppose they'll give users the posibility to disable that :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing winchester thermal diode if its that what messes up when too cold.

BTW: when you say the problem is the mem controller, does this include the thermal diode?

not the diode. its nothing to do with reading temps, its just the IMC not liking low temps. it wont run at the lower temps for some reason.

kind of like how an LCD wont run at very low temps, or it gets sluggish. (REALLY bad example, but kinda similar. they could fix the problem by... maybe adding a heater to an LCD panel to allow it to opperate in very cold ambient temps.)

see what im saying? did that make sense? the IMC just wont run at low temps.

Different E-tailers broker their shipments through different Distributors...it may just be that this first wave of shops we see allowing orders on the Venice/San Diego chips are using the first Distributor that's actually confirmed stock and released it for the E-tailers to order...there's business agreements and such in place so newegg or something couldn't just switch distributors because they had the chips first...or...the major E-tailers that we usually use are just holding out on us...no telling really

Chances of getting a decent stepping aren't very good right now...if people already have a CBBHD or CBBFD up over 2.7ghz already then no, there may not be a really compelling reason to sell it and buy a Venice...but for all the people with crappy Winchesters, or older chips, the Venice/San Diego lineup looks to potentially perform in a way that no AMD chips have up until now
