Prepare for San Diego 4000+, 3700+ and 3500+ (!)

That last one should be a great overclocker, at a great price:

Interesting chart...however I just can't buy into AMD releasing 2 s939 3500+ CPU's for the SAME PRICE, one with 1mb L2 cache on the San Diego core...the other with 512k L2 cache on the Venice core...why even bother releasing a Venice 3500+ at all then?

I just don't know what to think about this whole new core mess anymore...except that it's a mess

What?

You can choose: 512K L2 and 2.2GHz, or 1MB L2 and 2.0GHz. Both "on average" perform about the same at stock clocks.

Presumably you are also traumatized by Intel having a 5xx and a 6xx series that differ by L2 cache size?

These parts should start shipping this Friday, 4/15, per AMD's original distributor notice.

I don't see why the o/c would be different from venice. Same core. Only the L2 cache is different.

But, what it gets you is a slower core / larger cache for a given performance rating ( = price). And slower clocked cores have more headroom to overclock.

For example, if you buy Venice 3500+, you are already at 2.2GHz.
San Diego 3500+ starts at 2.0GHz.

They'll probably, on average, o/c to the same speed. But you'll have more cache if you overclock the San Diego, thus higher performance.

It does seem odd that AMD would be selling 3500+ and 3800+ chips in both 512K and 1MB considering that the Venice cores are cheaper to produce due to the smaller die size, and AMD certainly can't sell one 3500+ for more than the other . . .

Doesn't bother me particularly, but I don't see the business sense in it - maybe Venice yields at 2.2 and 2.4GHz are not good? (I'm hoping that's not the case . . .)

Seems to me that there is a sweet spot at the 3700+ San Diego (1MB L2, 2.2ghz). You get the 11x multi, and the bigger cache.

I believe the 3700+ San diego will be 2.2, 1Mb cache, while the 3500+ will also be at 2.2, but with 512 cache, similar to a venice. I recall seeing ADA3500DAA4BN. The 4 means 512 cache. I think the 3700+ will be ADA3700DAA5BN. The ADA3500DAA4BN probably failed with the 1Mb cache, similar to the 3500+ clawhammers that came out recently. Those seem to overclock well, so i wonder how these 3500 san diegos will do. Perhaps better than venice?

Where did you see those OPNs?

I doubt this. AMD has no interest in having distributors distinguish between 512K L2 on-die, all functional, and 1MB L2 on-die, but 1/2-disabled.

That's another way of saying they should label that part "4BP" not "4BN".

Seems like this would be a reversal of previous AMD procedure since they apparantly stockpiled the extra Clawhammers last time then crippled them and remarketed them as 3500+ to clear stock...not sure if the Clawhammer 3500's were fails or just overstock of the Hammer cores, however since the Clawhammer 3500's seem to OC well it doesn't seem like they would be failed speed-bin'd cores...

That doesnt make a lot of sense. How could they have San Diegos if the Venice yields are down? Venice is essentially a toned down San Diego with about 2/3 the transistors.

The Clawhammer 3400+ sold for more than the Newcastle one. Why? Because it had more transistors, thus more cost.

This isn't anything like the 5xx vs. 6xx. San Diego won't replace Venice like 6xx replaced 5xx. It's really the exact parallel of the Clawhammer and Newcastle.

Besides the speed bin distribution, there are marketing issues at play. I'm sure AMD can make tons of 2.4 and 2.6GHz San Diego parts, but not many people can afford them. So, many get clocked down.

Thats good speculation and makes more sense than amd undercutting the 3500+ when they make more with 4000+ so it could either be 512k cache or 1mb but speed binned cause it didnt make 4000+ clocks. I guess we will find out in time. I doubt if I can afford a retail 3700+ diego unless it magically costs around $300. The 3500+ diego looks ok if its below $300 and overclocks above 2.7GHz. We all speculate, after all it gives something to pounder ;)

Try froogle search for ADA3500DAA4BN. I currently see 8 resellers with this processor. Don't you think its unlikely they all made the same mistake and wrote BN instead of BP?

If indeed the new 3500+ chips are a full 1024kb of L2, it may mean AMD is going to phase out 512k chips from their premium line. Now I couldn't make any decent business case for this other than to compete on a checklist against Intel's 2MB chips (joe-blow wont understand IPC, Intel understands).

However, its probably more likely that its a failed SD 4000+ or such. A full fledged 1MB chip would be an awesome little overclocker though. :)

AMD will not release another fx at the same clock speeds as the one before it.

It will be at 2.8ghz, 90nm, have sse3 support and might not be called fx57 this time they might change the naming process :)

The chips shipped to OEM's on the 4th, not retailers..so not a paper launch. Dell and HP always get the CPU's before public does.

I just RMAed my FX55 to AMD and they received it on APRIL 5th 2005. I called this afternoon and talked to the Analylist wondering why the FX55 has not shipped. Usually there is a 2-3 day turn around but what he told me was that there is none left. He told me that sometime middle of next week the new processors are coming in and more FX55's will be coming in. I did not personally ask him about the venice but i am wondering if the new chips are the 90nm FX55 with SSE3 .
I have a feeling all the new processsors will be listed in stores. There is no FX57 for awhile but we will definitly see the FX55 90nm

I see the PN's but it just seems a departure from how they've done things up until now...now that I see retailers showing expected stock on these lower speed San Diegos I guess it just must be...Hell of a nice thing for AMD to do for us I guess, 3700+ for $350, I'll bite

They must be getting some amazing yield on the San Diegos though to be offering such a diverse lineup on the chips...Hasn't been the case up until now...previously their 1mb L2 parts have been fairly limited to the upper echelon of production chips because they've claimed to have low yeilds, and high cost on that Fab...they must have really honed their Fab process this time around to improve production levels...hahahaha, maybe all they're making now is San Diego's and crippling a portion to make the Venice line (like the Clawhammer 3500's)...would actually almost make sense to do it that way actually if they've been able to get production costs low enough...

the size of the 1mb san diego makes that slightly impractical though. i suspect it's better to have two lines, and make all the 1mb's that have defective caches venice while the rest actually gets put into a san deigo based chip :toast:

I called AMD today to find out my status of my RMA for a FX55 . HE told me that they are out of the FX55 but will be receiving the NEW processors next week sometime APR 20th. I wonder if AMD is just making 90nm chips now and the FX55 is now 90nm

I don't know why people are getting so upset. Would you rather not know about new CPUs until you buy one yourself? :stick: We should be thankful for all this pre-release info, not mad at it because we can't get a CPU that isn't even released to the public yet.

Terrace your argument about distributors not caring whether the code is BN or not is flawed after all that very same distributor listings shows the Clawhammer 3500+ (half cache disabled and lower frequency 4000+) as 3500+ Newcastle "AS"!!! So it is indeed possible that this is a similar case and the san diegos start at 3700+.

Fantastic! That's the CPU I'm most interested in at this point so some results would be nice...My only question is, can we get some Translations posted here instead of just looking at pictures and guessing what it says there? I'm not so great at reading non-english languages :confused:

I got news from my AMD person today. They said that 3700, 4000, and FX-55 will be out in the San Diego (1024) flavor. FX-57 won't show up until 3rd quarter. 3500 is a Venice (512) chip.

Great...it'd be much appreciated...I can only make out about 1 in 5 words in Danish or German which is just enough to get me really confused...your translation into english will be just fine - I can read mis-spelled, horrible grammer, no punctuation English great! I just have trouble with most other languages even if they're perfect :rolleyes:

Be nice to see some air testing...maybe just a few quick runs to get a feel of whether it will be comparable to the Venice results on air...but I'd understand if it was skipped :toast:

amd's roadmap still shows a 3500+ Diego but it could be in error or a 512k cache verson at 2.2GHz. Who knows, we will find out when its out, im not gonna speculate on the if's as for 3700+ we dont yet know its price but it might be somewhat affordable to some, at least its not some $900 fx55 if you want 1mb goodness.

Look at video cards. Nvidia and ATI might as well stop making any more GPU's as these CPU's are no way in hell fast enough.

Thats why SLI is such a waste in my view. Geesh i mena the only AMD CPU thats gonna be faster than a 6 month old chip is the FX-57, and thats only 2.8ghz and costs an arm and a leg and isn't out for ages. Surely they can get more mhz?

yeah, cpu speeds are kinda static, was saying in some thread, basically i mean a 3200+ was 2.2Ghz, there was an even faster chip with less cache, forget which though, and in two years we've gone up to 2.6Ghz. people forget that, on release all the reviews showed in 3d, and encoding(sse2) the athlon 64 was a decent lead infront of the ath xp, but in general performance the IPC isn't very much better than the athlon xp. overall we've seen very little basic increase in pure alu/fpu power from amd, OR intel in some time.

dual core is literally giving us double the fpu/alu power, but without quite the same amount of resources per core. but it is a BIG increase in power, just needs to be utilized properly which again will take some time, but not too long.

dual cores and proper apps will see cpu speed rocket, and in two , three years the more cell type design with added extra cores that specialise in certain areas adding to the dual cored power. but i don't see that there will be too much increase in power from a 2.2Ghz dual cored ath 64 to 2 years later, they'll probo only be up to 2.6Ghz dual cored.

This "tiny speed increase" will put AMD's CPUs in the running with those über Pentium 630s that are clocking to 4.4-4.5GHz (check Xtreme Overclocking section for some threads).

And one more thing: Intel's speed increases have been pretty crappy lately, too. We've finally come to a point where a lot more MHz just isn't feasible. As drunkenmaster says, dual core is likely to change all that.

Yeah but thats with overclocking, hardly any of the market o/c, overclocking isn't the point or the issue here's it's stock speeds, and the proggesion made in such a long time.

Also surely, CPU's are totally overpriced. I mean look at a GPU it has it's own memory, resistors, etc, etc, etc, and whats a CPU a blog of silicon? Now i ain't no expert by any strech of the imagination, but current CPU's are to pricey.

It wasn't as bad in the Athlon XP days, but then AMD didn't churn out loads of the same crappy CPU's with different names to confuse everyone everyone 4 months or so.

Higher IPC has helped make up for MHz increase being stagnant. I used to have an xp2000 doing 2.2 to 2.4GHz then a 2800+ newcastle at 2.2GHz which utterely crushed my athlon xp. Then I upgraded to a 3200+ castle and gained 300MHz. Next I went s939 winchester and gained huge differences, it was almost like going a64 all over. Venice may be another jump but dual core will be the next revolution. I never bothered with $500 or even $200 gpus because as you said "these CPU's are no way in hell fast enough" and I am totally in agrement. In fact I might sell my 9800pro and go back to my softmodded 9500 as its still plenty fast and I need the $ for Venice or even Diego in order to boost my gaming fps and of course 3dmark performance ;)

i was just thinking the other day how stagnant the cpu arena has been. i still believe that MB manu's are trying to catch up anyway, producing higher powered cpu's may not be the answer in the short run, getting the unit to run like a well tuned Ferrari, without bottleneck this and bottleneck that, everything working in a pure flow, CPU, ram, MB, etal.

although it is getting better, there is mucho room for improvement before CPU speeds are gonna make any real difference.

take a look at a p4, a tbred, a barton, an a64(castle, claw, winny, venice) and get back to me. Its a fact :fact:

3500+ San Diego was a mistake. There is a BN 3500+, but it is "4BN", meaning there was 1MB L2 on die ("BN") but ("4") only 512K of it has been left on. So, it is effectively a Venice 3500+ in terms of performance.

These parts are made from 3700+ San Diegos that either had a partially defective L2 cache, or AMD disabled it even though they did not have to, for supply/demand/pricing reasons.
