NB vmod GA-8IK1100

Well, this is my first post @ XtremeSystems, so if I do something wrong, please tell me ;) (I hope my English isn't so bad you couldn't read it)

I am trying to reach the 4 ghz with my p4 northwood 3 ghz. But I can't get a FSB higher than 245 mhz stable. I think the cause is my mobo, so I want to give the NB some more volts. But I can't find a good guide for my mobo.

Is it possible to vmod my NB, and if it is, do you know a good guide? (or an other way I can see wat to do?)

My specs:
Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 rev.2.0
P4 Northwood 3,0 ghz.
Corsair Twinx 3200C2PT
Antec TrueBlue 480 watt
Radeon 9800pro @ XT (is also waiting for a vmod I already have found)

Swiftech MCW50
Swiftech MCW20-R
Dangerden Double Heatercore

Thanks man. But for as far as I can see it's only a vcore and a vddr mod, not one for my Northbridge. Or am I wrong?

Yup that link only for vcore/vddr.....You might need to take a snapshot of your mb for anyone to help you with that part:)

The FAN1655 looks like a Vtt regulator, but it is in the wrong area of the board to be the Vtt regulator for the RAM imo. Can you check the voltage at pin 3 on the chip, and see if its voltage changes when you change Vdimm (I can mark pin 3 on the picture if you need me to, but its the first on the top row of pins on the chip which is disappearing behind the capacitor.

The voltage didn't change when I changed the vdimm. It stays at 1,43V.

[Edit] I've found the vcore for the NB is 1,5 V, so this could be the right voltage regulator?

I think that the FAN1655 is probably going to be the Vdd regulator, but I'm a bit concerned about the 3A current limit on it. It might also need a cut-trace mod to increase the voltage, but I will have to check the datasheet again and you will have to get some readings to be sure.

3 to ground = 1,439 V
14 to ground = 1,401 V

Can I read the resistance also when the pc is off? Because it's very narrow inside ;)

Yes, read the resistance with the power off.

Resistance between pins 3 and 9 is 0,4 Ohm. (not much ;))

It looks like it might need a cut-trace mod then :(. Are there any 0 ohm resistors around the chip? (should be marked with a 0 on the top). If there are, can you check if it is connected between pins 9 and 3.

Could you explain to me what a cut-trace mod is?

Yea, thats right. They are a lot more dangerous to do because you have to do more soldering. There are two possible ways to do the mod, and I'm not sure which one would work best.
The fist way to do the mod would be to lift pin 9 up from the board and solder a 200 ohm variable resistor between pin 9 and pin 3 and raise the resistance to increase voltage. This would rely on the resistance of pin 9 for the mod to work, and I'm not sure if it will work.
If connecting a varaible resistor between pin 3 and 9 doesn't work, you will have to connect a 10 ohm fixed resistor between pin 3 and 9, and connect the varaible resistor between pin 9 and ground.

Have you any clue what voltage I'll get by what resistance?

Assuming you do the second mod with the fixed resistor, and that pin 9 has an infinite resistance between itself and ground, with the 10 ohm fixed resistor and the 200 ohm varaible resistor at maximum resistance, the voltage should be increased by about 0.075v, and 0.15v with the varaible resistor at 100 ohms.
If you do the first mod, it would depend on the resistance between pin 9 and ground, and I can't find a value for it in the datasheet.
You will probably need to put a heatsink on the chip as well as it contains current driving components for the Vdd voltage supply, as well as a voltage regulator.

I will get the stuff and first try the first mod, with a VR between 3 and 9, or do you recommend the other one?

The first mod will work as long as there is a reasonably low resistance between pin 9 and ground, within the chip itself (and i'm not sure if there will be).
I would suggest trying the first mod, and if the voltage doesn't adjust, or is unstable or doesn't adjust enough, then do the second mod. The only extra component in the second mod is a 10 ohm resistor.

So if pin 9 is lifted, I can measure the resistance between pin 9 and ground and after that I can decide witch mod I'll do?

In theory, yes, however you might not be able to get an accurate reading. There will be other factors as well as the resistance, such as capacitance of the pin which might be hard to measure.
I'm quite certain that you will need to do the second mod, but it might put too much voltage through the NB if you don't check weather the first mod works.
You could try connecting the 10 ohm resistor between pins 3 and 9 with no variable resistor, and if there isn't a voltage increase then add the varaible resistor between pin 9 and ground.

I think I can get the resistors by Tuesday (because shop is closed on Monday) But I also need to find a good (how do you call it in English) thing to solder if you know what I meen. :stick: ;)

Sorry I kick this old topic, but i've something to say.

Today i've found finally time to do the mod. The first option doesn't work as predicted. The second option works! :) The voltage increased to 1,508 volt, with vr on 200 ohm.

I want to thank all the people who (tried to) help me and special thanks to persivore. You're great :D
