P5P800, SL7PU 530J = "little monster"

How things have changed since the last time i played with the Prescott ;)
Last time around was 3.2E ES (D0 stepping) on an IC7-G .... it was ok, but really HOT, and didn't OC THAT great.

Now I'm playing with the P5P800 ($49 from Newegg refurb) and an OEM SL7PU 530J ($159)..... also unlike last time around, the Intel rig is CHEAP! Combo is cheaper than a 3200+ alone.

Now, a couple issues... the P5P800 uses 24pin PSU, so my OCZ booster and 20 pin Fortron isn't the best bet... although it has worked ok so far...
I could do the 3.3v direct mod... and use my 24pin PSU.

So I've just played a BIT with it, but at 1.44v it goes nearly 4100mHz with Zalman 7700Cu... I'll go higher later once i get some bugs ironed out.

How to enable PAT on this combo??
How to get better DDR OC's??

OH! ANd why does CPU-Z give wrong Vcore???

Some thoughts:

Try to search for how to enable PAT on the P4P800 series of mobos, same chipset.
One good program to verify if PAT is enabled is CTIAW.

Regarding the vcore, either it could be a standard Asus idle vcore (high), but that's really high... it might also be a mix up of sensors, and that could be the vtt maybe.

PAT can be enabled by 2 tricks on boards, first off, the old P4P800 didnt let you keep PAT enabled, if you overclocked. the trick to bypassing this, was to stay in 1:1 mode, and boot into windows at stock, and overclock with clockgen.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work on the P5P800, but it's really only useful if you have ram that can go high at 1:1.

you can also try 865/875 tweaker.

Here's teh deal with the CPU, Fry's has OEM 530's listed at $159.99, but they BRING 530J when you purchase... otherwise 530J should be a few bucks more... I think that ALL new OEM 530's are E0 stepping (530J SL7PU)

Well, I've found the issue that some have written about. set the fsb to 15 x 266 and run sPi with cpu-z open, start bench and watch cpeed jump from 4006 to 4050mhz...
weird!!!! any ideas?

no idea what that is, my CPU here is solid. when I set 4.2 ghz, it stays at 4.2, or 4.199

maybe it's a Asus board issue??

FSB fluctuations, a lot of mobos show this issue at high overclocks.

Or... perhaps the C1E state, and CPU-Z can't read correctly the throttle speed, you say 15 x 266 right? run RMclock to be sure your cpu is not throttling to 14 multi when idle.

wow, nice results charlie. What ram did u use? Your mushkin blue? Put that under LN2 and get 6.xxxghz.

No way. the combo's bottleneck under LN2 is the board, incl. all mods, FSB330 will be possible, but not more for sure.

I'm actually having all kinds of probs with memory clocks. Nothing I have will do more than 260, 1:1... not tccd, tcc5, old-school bh6, utt bh5, utt ch5, ??????
now i see why I should have got chip with 16 and 17 multi. and this board only has 5:4 divider, which is too low at the cpu's max, like 275ish...that's only like 220.
i know this isn't a fatal1ty or a dfi 875-t but it was $50, hehehehe.....

here you can see the issue with the memory, I just can;t hit the sweet spot on AIR with the 15x multi. I have a 630 coming on Monday, and I'm bummed, becasue it'll be the same issue. I should've opted for the 640 or 650. Now I shouldn't be so picky, it's replacing my ic7-g/3.0c@3.4g office rig... so It'll be sufficient, but you know how it is around here, lol

max my 640 will do is 4.3 unstable and 4.2ghz (semi stable tiil i vdroop the board)

weird thing with the 6XX is when i set the cpu over 4.1ghz @ 4.2ghz, it will show 3.89ghz @ windows...only cpu-z will read 4.2ghz properly... :stick:

I need one of those 875P-T but damn...none of my supplier have them in stock...only available to USA damn it :mad:

why not just sell that board, put a extra $20 in and get a AS8??
seems like a much better board, after what I heard from you...

An AS8 has no problems to go over 290FSB, I tried one some time ago and did not play too much with it but FSB clocks are good.

By the way Charlie if you wanna sell that 630, pm me.

yeah, i know what you guys are saying... but the problem here is that with a fixed multi, and only a 400 and 320 divider, i get either 267 for 4g or 211....
my best high speed sticks won't top 255 on the intel and 211 is just too slow!
the boards max of 270 or 280 whatever it is, is ok

The score isn't very good, and the clock is to the max.
with vcore over 1,45 the cpu is get worse.
i will make the vdroop then I hope can improve.

Its just soooooooo difficult to get near max oc on both CPU and ram on a P4 setup... :mad:

Had the exact same problem with my old 2.4C. It went 3.2 max @ 267FSB leaving my BH5 at 213 :rolleyes:

But nice to hear that overclocking prescotts on air is kinda possible.

so far i'm not happy with memory related problems. i can prime with the stress the cpu option near 4ghz, but when i hit blend, i can only go like 3750. i've tried lots of sticks and haven't found anything that gets along with the p5p800.

my OCZ Plat Rev2 will do 270 memtest stable @ 2.65v but the damn multi wont work properly !!! :slapass:

btw Charlie, i tried 5 530J & 4 540J on my AS8 and no 530J prime stable, 2 540 stable with 1.6v

Vcore drop on AS8 boards are a BIG problem, tried a 530 and a 540 cpu and none of them were totally stable at 4.0Ghz (more than 12 hours of 2 prime smallFFT sessions), same cpu's are rock solid on an Asus P5GD2 with just 1.4v.

Perhaps mosfet cooling can do something there, I didn't try it.

Now with the same 540 cpu on my new AA8XE it needs 1.475v on bios to be totally stable, when stressed uGuru software shows vcore readings of 1.42-1.44v.

I stopped messing with it and I'm back on my 3000+ @ 2700mHz 24/7....
I like it a LOT more than the Intel.
I'm thinking about what to do with the 530j, 630 and the p5p800....
For me to feel satisfaction with the Intel, I need decent ram that'll do 270+ 1:1 no worse than 2.5-3-3...
I really don't want to drop the $$$ for a 925xe board and ddr2.

I only have water cooling and I can only do it 258FSB with 1.52V. And that's the max voltage ppl advice me to run my pressy....

I have a lot of faith in Intel's new little 6xx line of CPU's... however, the memory problems hurt me... waiting for a primo set of sticks...

I haven't been able to get this mod to work yet, I've soldered to two different locations and it doesn't seem to work either way. An EXACT location of which points to solder and what value resistance would be helpful.

Charlie + z1erer: Do you mind sharing the FPO/Batch of your wonder CPUs? A friend of my got a 630, week 38 of 2004 which only overclocks to 4GHz on water. Pretty crappy compared to your numbers
