Impressive 6200 Overclocks

Hey guys - just got around to playing with my Gigabyte 6200 card on my DFI NForce4. I'll let the picture speak for itself...

Basically just put AS5 on the core (same stock HSF) and i threw some RAMSinks on the ram with Arctic Silver Epoxy. No voltage mods...considering the card is stock at 300/500, i thought it overclocked pretty well :)

I also did the softmod from 6200 ---> 6600 so that it has 8 pipelines instead of the 4 it comes with enabled by stock. :D

Also, test was ran at 1280x1024 resolution and 70.80 drivers...i'm gonna try and tweak a little more and see what i can do :)

May I ask with all those parts in your sig, you have a 6200 to go with the other things like an OCZ 600W, DFI SLI-DR. FX55?

LOL, good question Tomodak - basicaly, i spent all my money on those parts and ran out of money for video card..lol...i plan on upgrading to an SLI config at some time in the near future when i have some more cash..

As far as the tweaking went...didn't work so well..lol..i threw a big 120mm fan blowing 108cfm in front of it and i gained about 5mhz on the core clock and 10 on the memory..resulting in approximately 1 point higher in 3d05..lol..anyways, guess thats my wall - not too shabby :)

AWWWW MAN, another reason to regret buying my 9600 for $99 too early...damn.

Mines a 9600 np too and the max a 9600XT goes is 1500 stock and max 2000 OCed so, again, congratulations.

Why did you run 1280x1024? What do you get @ 1024x768? Nice o/c on the core. How many ns is the memory - 3.6 TSOP?

i didn't try the 1024x768 test...i just did 1280x1024 because thats my monitors max resolution..lol..the memory is actually Hynix 4ns TSOP.

The plain vanilla 6600 core is at 300 but as it is same as the 6600GT core which does 550+ normally then it is not surprising that the same core with 4 pipelines softdisabled also gets as high .. nice result for cheap.

Also, not many people mention broken pipes when re-enabled so I guess there are not as many faulty units as the 6800/LE which had 4 and 8 disabled.

Great card, for lower resolutions same as a GT in effect ( where memory bandwidth might not be as much as an issue.

Anyone wanting one of these better get it before nvidia just pump out nv44 turbo chache things which will be a lot less powerful and best used as a paperweight.

1024 is the standard. That's nice for 4 ns! 3200 is with 8x1?

3200 is without any AA. I can try and do a run later on with AA...gotta run to class now! See ya!

hey kunaak - the reason i did 05 was because it is the most graphics intensive tester...01 tends to be more CPU/memory bandwidth based - however, i'm going to do a 01se run right now...be right back with the pics...

Even though NewEgg says its a 550mhz stock ram speed, it really isn't..i plugged the card in and got 500mhz stock...although i heard that some of them were coming with 3.6ns TSOP's..wish i got one of them :( oh well, mine still did pretty well! :)

DO NOT get a turbo-cache card - they are the epitomy of low-end graphics cards..lol...go with the 6200 like mine and you'll be happy being that you can enable the disabled 4 pipelines making it a 6600GT and then most likely get some nice overclock out of it. the TC cards are a whole new core, NV43 if i remember correctly, and it doesn't clock well at all. In closing, go with the 6200, you won't regret it!

Nah, look at the 01 score. With a 9800pro overclocked and fx55 at 3.2 it would get a few thousand higher probably. Hell I can hit 21.2k with a axp setup and 9800pro.

For the price though it aint a bad card.

Simply amazing for how cheap these cards are! You're right about the 6200 Turbocache, they use NV44 not NV43 (6600). I think I'm going to pick one up. Do you guys think refurbished ones have a lower likelihood of being about to do this mod?

9800 pro = 170-200. This card is 100. Nice value for a modder, also a nice project for the cheapest 20K. What do you think it would be?

I got a eVGA 6200 with 550 MHz ram and this thing runs like a beast on steroids! I unlocked the additional pipes and got to overclock a bit, here are my results:

That's my max stable artifact free overclock, I'd wager to say I could go a little bit further, but this is about it. Simply a great value card!

i mean especially for 6200 AGP if any available ?

Im a real noob at soldering and need a little bit more intrsuction exacly how to solder, ground and all that. Picture by picture. Anybody have any good volt mod pictures to show?

Just picked up an Xpertvision agp geforce6200 from a shop in Hull, softmod works fine and the card has Samsung 3.6ns ram :D So I am hoping to get to over 700mhz on the memory. Not tweaked the card yet as the bios on my ComboZ skt939 board doesn't fully support the card, just waiting for Asrock to send me a beta bios to sort out the compatibility problem and then I can push the card on a bit.

What exactly makes a card SLI "compatible"? Obviously the 6600 GT is SLI compatible but the 6600 NU is not, so is it simply the bios? If so, since the 6200 is basically a stripped down 6600, I don't see why someone couldn't hack the bios and get it to work. As I said before, I have absolutely no idea how something is SLI compatible so I'm just throwing out an idea. I'm not sure either, but I'm 90% sure it's not required from all the ruckus due to the DFI Ultra board. Even though the ultra board didn't come with an SLI bridge people were able to run SLI albeit it at a somewhat slower rate. I'll do a search on this momentarily.

Anyone want to start working on hacking the bios? Also, I found out that the Gigabyte 6600 has a turbo version of the 6600 NU maybe we can use it for an improvement in performance (have read that someone was able to flash the 6600 GT non-turbo with a turbo bios so maybe this'll work for the 6600 NU as well)! Maybe if we could flash our 6200's to 6600 we could take advantage of this "special" bios.

That's true... but if someone can figure out how to get SLI working for some of the cheaper cards using this method, maybe we could stand to gain something. Two 6200's in pseudo-SLI would most likely beat a 6600 GT and would likely cost about the same!

Possibly... this is obviously all speculation at this point but there are 256 MB versions of the 6200 and 6600 NU available which would at least partially help that problem. But if you really wanted performance you'd got for a higher end card, I think this possibility would be nice just as a value option not to replace high-end performance.

i actually think 256mb on a 6200, and even 6600nU isnt all that useful... the 9800pro is better then a 6600nU (mostly), and it hardly helps with the 9800pro's preformance... 5% at max.

oh, and i think someone here mentioned the 6200 turbo cache... avoid those like the plague, they are worse then the 6200 by far...

ok - i'm going on the hunt again for a 6600 bios that will comply with nvflash and hopefully work on my 6200...i'll post back in a while with my success (or failure, but lets hope success :D ). And yes Ackbar, my handle does represent the group Alter Bridge :toast:

Interesting... I found a few bioses that work on my card when I use VGABios but... I did not want to flash since when I tried using VGAbios on the "backup" I created of my own bios it would not work saying that there was a "checksum error". I tried reading my backup bios I created in NiBiTor and it stated that my bios was incompatible so at the moment unless I can get a good backup bios I am hesitant to flash... I know how to get the bios out of the gigabyte thing, I'll PM you. I think this will work!

ok, i'm back after some experimenting...and i have good news..my card successfully flashed to a 6600 when i forced nvflash via switches -4-5-6...however, i'm having some issues...i'm trying to narrow down whether or not its a driver issue or the bios...i'm going to try reinstaling drivers now...and another weird thing, when i go to overclock, it doesn't offer me 2d/3d...look...

I hope you figure this out. I just ordered one with a DFI NF4-Ultra, PS, and case. I'm just gonna mess around with it until prices for the x800XLs come down.

edit- does Nibitor work with the 6200?

unfortunately, nibitor doesn't work with 6200 bioses...but it does with the 6600's...anyways, i'm experiencing some weird things here...the flash was succesfull, but it seems that the card only "half" took it...like, i get in windows, and it recognizes Video Card but when i go to install nvidia drivers it says "can't find appropriate device, installation aborted". So, i instead force-fed the driver to it in 6600 flavour...now it refreshes the screen a lot (blacks out and comes back) whenever i do something in relevance to the video card...i checked my "Version" with nvflash and it was very strange..it told me the device was GeForce 6200 but the chipset was a GeForce 6600. So i think the additional voltage is leading to the much higher overclocks,however, i think i need to still allow windows to think its a GeForce 6200 to get appropriate functionality. I'm going to experiment more tomorrow, as i'm dead tired and its 2:00AM where i am. Have a good night, i'll be back tomorrow with updates.

Interesting... so did you find that your max overclock improved as a result of the flash? I'm not sure about the 2d/3d thing... maybe that's not an option with your drivers. btw- what are you using when i use coolbits it doesn't look like that.

BTW- What issues are you having?

My card just didn't like the 6600 firmware - was blacking out, not showing 2d/3d in coolbits modded drivers...i dunno, it was odd...maybe another 6600nu bios will work better...i'll have to see if i can find one...until then, i'm going to look into that voltage mod..see what i can do...as seen while it had the 6600 bios, with some additional voltage, this baby will fly! :D

I've got another 6600 NU bios (non-gigabyte) and some other Gigabyte ones of various revisions. If you have some time, maybe trying one of the earlier (or later) revision gigabyte ones might work out. PM me if you want links to some of those other bioses. BTW - did you happen have a problem using VGAbios on your original (backup) bios? I did and that's why I'm hesitant to flash mine just yet. If I found out that you had the same problem I would probably be willing to try it out.

Look at the "6200UP-8X CT"... notice anything about its ram? DDR3! I wish we could get one of those in the states. I don't think it would be worth buying one from them, would have no idea what the brand is and warranty and such would be impossible.

ok, tried the canyon version of 6600nu bios, flashed and had same results as the gigabyte one - it seems that it doesn't change the adapter name to 6600, instead, to NV43...yet i flash back and its called a 6200..lol..i don't know..im' going to continue the quest for a voltage mod as i think that'll do us more good than flashing to another bios...and Ackbar, i did try the vgabios thing with my backed up rom, and it gave a checksum error, yet the backup works fine.

is your system running at stock in those benchmarks? (other than the gcard) my 6800nu only gets 18.5k in a 3dmark01 run all system @ stock.

the 18.5k is at stock FX55 speeds - the 20.5k is with my FX55 at 3.2ghz.

Hmm... I attempted to flash last night but many anomalous things started to occur... so I didn't get anywhere with it. I'm curious if what you're noticing with the ability to overclock more is due to the bios or a voltage increase. NiBiTor doesn't seem to allow me to look at the voltages on the 6600 bios so I can't tell what the 6600 voltages are set to. I'd like to try the v-mod on memory since I think the memory speeds are what are really holding us back.

I'd wager to say that it could be done without too much work just by following what people have done with their 6600 NU (or maybe even GT). I think there must be a software based solution though... maybe we can submit our 6200 bios to one of those bios hackers on this forum and ask them to check it out. Maybe there's a simplier more elegant solution to increasing the voltage or maybe a way to get the 6600 bios to work for us.

You should send your bios over to the guys at mvktech.net. Maybe they could get nibitor support for it.

good idea BDB, i just submitted my saved bios. We'll see what they say...hopefully they can get nibitor to read it and read the voltages correctly..that'd be mint :)

Try the memory VMOD I have at this thread. It's simple considering the legs of the IC you'll be working with are spaced wide. If you don't want to solder anything, you can always run mini-clips instead.

Interesting... I bet that v-mod will work. I'm 99% sure at my clock speeds I'm limited by memory bandwidth. Also, I noticed that I can physically clock to 600 MHz (ie. no artifacts) and run benchmarks but the scores aren't impressive probably due to throttling. I think that if I could get a better cooler I could clock to 600 MHz, all that would be left to make this a kickass card would be memory cooling and a v-mod for the memory! :D

Edit: What's the best air cooling available that would fit our cards? I'm wondering if I could even get past 600 MHz, but that seems to be the limit that our software will allow us to go.

Before my board died, I was testing at 650MHz artifact-free with 2.8V. Prior to the VMOD, my maximum on the RAM side was 610MHz with 2.6V. I also installed some OCZ Copper BGA ramsinks to cool things down a bit.

As far as how much of an improvement 40MHz was good for, I wouldn't know. My Ultra-D died just before I could even pull some 3D runs. In my book, 1MHz is good for something...anything...even a slight boost in ego. ;)

EDIT: For cooling the GPU, you can try the Arctic Cooling Silencer. It looks like a fairly good unit.

Interesting... so your 6600 NU could only get the memory to 650 even with v-mod on the memory? I can get to ~670ish for it to play hours of gaming but for benchmarking I can go to 680. I'm actually a little more intereted in the GPU itself right now. I feel that I can clock that to 600 MHz + but first of all software won't allow past 600 MHz and second I'm getting some serious throttling after anything more than just benchmarking. Water cooling on this guy doesn't seem worth it for such a cheap card either... so I'm considering getting whatever fancy air cooling solution is available. Ideas?

Edit: Scratch the last question, you answered it while I was posting. LOL!
EDIT: The application for the 6200/6600 (NV Silencer 6) isn't available in the states yet it seems. But... from a search I just did, it appears they plan to release it in March, maybe we'll start to unlock the impressive power of the 6200 by then!

I don't think the memory on my card is all that great. The guy who took me down in 03 and 05 has his memory in the 700MHz range, if I'm not mistaken. I'll see what this card can do when I have my system up and running, although I might get sidetracked since I just ordered an X850 XT. :D

You should be able to clock beyond 600MHz. Maybe not in RivaTuner, but in Coolbits instead. RivaTuner wouldn't allow for anything over 450MHz on the core, so I just went into Coolbits and tweaked it to 540MHz from there.

Coolbits for my card is limited to 600 MHz, take a look at AB's post where he has a screenshot after he flashed with a 6600 bios. It's kinda a moot point right now anyways since I'm throttling at those speeds regardless.

Man. 600MHz+ for the core and 700MHz+ for the memory would be awesome for such a value-priced card if you can get to that level. At least shoot for the memory VMOD.

not that bad rancid - GT's have DDR3 and a different PCB, so your memory clocks will be way higher..lol..and hopefully a nicer core overclock too! Good luck with it...as far as cooling and whatnot ackbar and conrad - guess we'll be waiting for the NV6...until then though, we need to figure something else out...lol...i'm hoping that the mvk guys come through with nibitor reading our bioses...be awesome to just do a soft voltmod...the memory vmod seems relatively easy...i see the legs of that IC and they are wide so soldering won't be a problem...i'm going to run to radio shacke tomorrow and i'll prolly grab a 10k ohm pot to solder on there...we have regular dimm IC's, not BGA IC's for memory, so on my memory i have attached two BGA sinks to cover the entire thing with Arctic Silver epoxy. speaking of that..i hope the NVSilencer6 FITS over the memory sinks..lol...if not i might be butchering a heatsink and slapping it on there...oh well..for now my card sits stock until i can get some volts :)

yeah the 6600GT should be a bit of fun, i have some ramsinks to go on it and im going to get a arctic silencer for it soon :) I assume the 6800 model fits the 6600gt ?

Im also tempted to get a lian li pc75 and put some water cooling in the top with my mach2 GT on the bottom :D How easy is it to mod a pc75 and how much would a watercooling kit cost for just the gpu? the chipset doesnt need cooling on the NF4 does it ?

The discussion is ongoing, but it seems that the Silencer and Zalman models are the best. Beyond that... little direct comparison has been made. I'd be willing to go for the Zalman since it comes with ramsinks, but those ramsinks look real crappy.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the Zalman VF700-Cu fits our card.

You can also use the NV1 Rev 2, which I also haven't been able to find anywhere unfortunately... it seems that all the Artic Cooling models that support the 6200/6600 (GT) are not available yet!

hmm..i see the zalman is a bit more available...maybe i'll grab one of these...see if it does any good...

Wow! You don't waste any time! LOL! Let me know how it goes. I think if I wasn't throttling so much I could easily get 600 MHz since I get no artifacts that high up. Unfortunately, I feel that the main limitation is the RAM bandwidth.

LOL - ackbar - yeah, memory bandwidth is killing us, but every mhz helps :) lol - so i'll let you know how it goes with the new cooler...as far as those TSOP style coolers go, i got quite a story..lol..i tried ot buy 2 packs from frozencpu, being that theres 4 in a pack..i got 2 packs of TSOP style FLAT heatsinks...not those big nice ones like in the pic...so i had 16 sinks..lol...so i called them and told them i got the wrong thing..so they say fine, i'll send out the correct ones. So I got the packagte and i got the those sinks but in BGA format, not TSOP. lol, so at this point i said screw it, and just put 2 of the BGA's on the TSOP chip - they fit, just about..lol...does the job..anyways, having the zalman will hopefully keep the ram nice and cool as well as the GPU...anyways, thats that.i'll let you know howi make out.

I think I figured this out. Need to edit your bios in NiBiTor and "Enable 6600GT Temp Monitoring" trick. I read up on the exact hex string that has to be edited and it's present in my bios as well as the 6600 GT! I'm betting that if we just edit this small line we'll have temp monitoring. Then reflash with your modified 6200 bios. Wanna try? I've had trouble getting my bios to flash...

EDIT: Look at http://forums.vr-zone.com.sg/showthread.php?p=631062 for the exact Hex edit bios string. If you edit our bios in NiBiTor you can see that it changes that exact string! I'm fairly sure this is all we'd have to do to enable it.

ah ha! You're a genious Ackbar!! It works...perhaps this is a slight problem..49c at IDLE stock speeds...i think the zalman should help quite a bit :)

Yikes! I'll cook dinner on my 6200! I'm guessing no one anticipated that the 6200 (a value card) would need great cooling. I'll flash mine in a little while and see what's up. Could you tell me the exact command line parameters you used (since I've been having trouble flashing)?

lol, i guess at stock it doesn't need that great of cooling..they run it high...but if you wanna be xtreme with your budget cards, you gotta cool em :P anyways...did you save your bios succesfully? if not, do "nvflash -b original.rom" then mod the rom file with hex editor and then to flash it back i always to "nvflash -4 -5 -6 originalmod.rom", the 4,5,6 switches FORCE a flash despite any non-matching PCB, etc. Good luck!

Yup, I've already gotten a backup and also already modded it! But I haven't been able to flash any new roms and I think that's what my problem was. Awesome! I was missing the "-4 -5 -6" I think so I was having trouble just testing a flash with my original bios!
