MCP 650 VS MCP 600 rev2 noise review.

well I just got my mcp600 rev2 today and I must say it's almost slient, for those of you deciding which pump to get this is the one... it's by far more quiet than my MCP650 (aka D4 12v). Just giving those people a heads up who is looking to get a nice 12v pump to look into the aquaextreme. It's alot more quiet than the mcp650 I can provide short videoclips upon request if you like but I need someone to host :) Very very nice, i'm glad I made the switch! No more annoying noises yay!

Nice Job! But from what I have read, the DD4 gets whinier at higher resistance (ie w/ several blocks/large radiator), so running the DD4 in your loop and the MCP600 just in a tub doesn't really give an accurate idea. Does the new MCP600 whine like that?

VAPB400: I will post another video with the blocks installed but as of now I'm a little bit busy trying to figure out with's wrong with my NEO2 but I will have that other video up as well!

Thanks maxxxracer I found out that it was the OCZ Powerstream 520w that didn't like my Neo2 all that much so i'm sending it back for an RMA. The strange thing is that it's a brand new PSU that was just RMA hahah.

yah some of hte neo2's dont do well with the ocz psu or the other way around. I was lucky and got both of them to work well. You should note that it wanst the psu and was infact that the board is fuxxored. its nothing big but has grounding issues. The ocz psu and the high end antecs have ground sensing that makes them shut down or not even turn on so that the system isnt running ungrounded..

I watched both. So is this one of the quitest pumps? Is there one quiter? I'm looking for a super quite pump. That sounded pritty faint. I havn't watercooled before, but am in the process or researching.

get a 1048 and place it ontop of some bubble wrap (the large bubble type).

iboomalot, the 1048 is a good quality pump but highly not reccomended for performance watercooling. If you just going for silent and no so much for the OC, its fine, but it does not have the head pressure of flow to be truly effective in a watercooling loop.

btw, have you made any decisiosn after your wmd-15 incident?

not yet one thing that I might consider is Iam using a MCW6002 and I might not need a huge pump due to it tappering off at higher pressures.

just seemed weird that with the WMD_15 my temps were 2c higher than the 1048.

wanting silence vs couple degrees cooler.

I figure right now iam 6c cooler than before 40c vs 46c thinking the weapon HC will drop that some more. Might try out another pump and see if it drops the temps.

SO what is silent when sitting on some bubble wrap / foam ??? if you hold the pump in your hand can you hear it??? Is it loud????

I wanted to know that too, my Hydor L30 II is loud even in my hand or foam, from what I hear from the video, I imagine the MCP600 is better, 'cos my pump is louder than the MCP650

Ugh i get shivers when I hear that D4 pump. I had one for 6months and hated every second of its spine tingling pitch that seems to penetrate all other sounds.

jupiler you might want to return it and get the AquaExtreme 50z (mcp600). I thought I told you to get the mcp600 and not the mcp650? Did I not?

The video of the mpc650 is an actual representation of the pump noise with the mcp650, I will have a clip up soon with the waterblocks installed on my system with just the waterblocks and mcp600 (aquaextreme 50z) I will update it soon sorry for the infair comparasion. I will have another clip of the mcp650 with just the same equal length tubing of the mcp600 I had and a bucket of water posted as well.

do one with the pump in your hand so its not touching anthing and let us know how loud it is?

Got the pump up and running.
I have to agree that it's pretty loud. The whining noise is driving me nuts.
DD's site states that the pump needs at least 6V to operate.
Maybe I can try to have it running at 7V through the molex', but it might take a big performance hit.

at 7 volts it will be a BIG performance hit... for having it at that voltage you might as well go with a different pump.

Bwa, I'll leave it like it is and put some plugs in my ears.

Fei, Let me be the first to welcome you to Xtreme Systems, where we kill hardware with Xtreme effeciency.

As to your question, I will ask BillA of swiftech, but to be honest, there arnt a whole lot of the rev1's in circulation. They have either failed (died due to usage) or are in someones rig. they are not for sale at retail outlets anymore, only the rev2 AquaExtreme 50Z's from cooltechnica are available now.

that said, I will ask bill.

Could you also ask him why they replaced the MCP600 rev.2 for the MCP650?
The MCP650 seems to perform less, cost more and make more noise. The only reason I can think of is that the MCP650 has a longer MTBF.

actually if you look at the MTBF on laings website its 10k hours not 50k... (for the 650)

The reason it was changed was becuase of the bad rap the mcp600rev1 had.. ppl knew that the mcp600 was bad but wouldnt take the time to learn that the updated version didnt have the problems. So they moved on to a different pump altogether.

The serial number of the rev2 mcp600 pumps start with an S is how you can tell the difference.

Just replaced my DD 12v pump (MCP650) with a MCP600 and all I can say is WOW it is WAY quieter than the 650!!! That buzz of the 650 was getting annoying!!

I have the MCP 650 and with have it wrapped in sound foam and have the inside of my computer desk lined with sound foam so I really don't hear the whine thankfully. If I would have known about the sound issue I would have gone for the 50z when I bought it, but you know if it works, I'm not gonna fix it!

Dumping more heat onto water? I don't know... (wrapped = no airflow to cool pump really well)

My aquaextreme 50z (MCP 600) is too loud for me. It makes my case rather noisy (it might be the vibrations more so than the actual noise from the pump). I have a Laing DDC (MCP 350) coming tomorrow to replace it. I really want a very quiet, but good to excellent performing system.

Semi-unrelated side note: With the MCP 600 and my HDPE reservoir the water splashes in the reservoir. That noise also drives me nuts. I've got a DD fill port coming to replace the reservoir as well.

No pump will be quiet without proper vibration mounting. MCP600 is very quiet and not readily detectable vs MCP350 in cases deemed quiet. How is MCP600 mounted? If you followed the instruction given... bad. No metal should contact case, no screws in unless you grometted (even that is not good enough). Put big sponge type thing or... sorbothane (if you can find it) underneath pump. Make sure you don't make tubing so tight that it transmits all vibrations. You will have same problem with MCP350 unless above steps are taken.

Thanks for the advice. I mounted the pump per the instructions with the supplied piece of foam like insulation and 2 screws with plastic nuts and washers. So you are saying the pump should not be screwed to the case. If yes, then what prevents it from sliding around and shorting out the motherboard or a pci card?

The MCP 350 is already on its way, so I will try that out also. I'll report back if it's significantly quieter.

Just use the doublesided tape. Key factor here is "isolating" the vibration from case. By tightning the screw you effectively joined the thing. Making whole case vibrate. One quick way to test is touch the furthest away part of case from pump and if you can feel it, that's guaranteed noise. MCP350 vibrates slightly lesser amount but without proper isolation, it will.
(I've got 3 watercooled rigs atm. 1 with 2 mcp600, 1 with single mcp600, 1 with mcp350, the ones with single pumps are for quieting the system more than anything else and they do sound similar about a foot or two away... not noticeble beyond that distance due to the fact they are in kitchen and living room which do have fridge in same open evnironment... loudest thing around there)...

Jinu117: you're wrong on the vibration... I mounted my mcp650 and mcp600... with 2 screws.. the reason why it doesn't vibrate is because the bottom plate is paded with a soft foam to absorb the vibration that the pump will gives out. I don't know about you but I like my things secure...

I'm still not entirely set on MCP350 or 50z. I want quiet. That is the #1 goal. What are your experiences, jinu, with both pumps concerning sound?

Well, my dangerden order came in. I opened up the pump box and surprise, it's a Laing D4 pump, and not the DDC I ordered. The also left out the tee i had ordered (bad DangerDen bad...) but I bought one from Home Depot instead.

So I did a side by side comparison of the 50z and the D4 outside the case similar to the video. As expected, the D4 definitely has a potentially annoying whine to it. Suprisingly, I noticed that that the 50z vibrates a lot more than the D4. When I held the 50z in my hand it vibrated my arm up to my elbow. The D4 in comparison vibrated very little. Maybe the D4 is better balanced?

I wound up suspending the 50z inside the case with some ghetto zip ties and I ditched the reservoir in favor of the fill port and tee line. The tee line fixed the splashing noise from the reservoir. The suspending of the pump got rid of the vibration noise entirely. The only unwarranted noise left is the noise from the air in the lines resulting from the tee line. I'm hoping it goes away after a few days. Even if it doesn't it is still a lot quieter than the splashing water in the reservoir it replaced.

I also switched to the McMaster 7/16 inch ID hose. A much tighter fit and easier bending than the 1/2 inch ID clearflex I used before. Not to mention a much better price :)

All in all I'll probably just keep the 50z in place. I can't imagine the DDC being appreciably quieter.
