www.firingsquad.com
did a review of the powercolor one that does have a power connector...430/550 is all they got if i remember correctly (thats not much better then the non molex ones)
i think the cores that cant hit high speeds get put onto the XL's,Non pro's, SE's (speedbinning)
But XL's have physically different cores, they are much smaller, how could they be speedbinned from higher models then?
Still it is VERY strange when a card only gives a 7,5% overclock on core imho. Every single card i've had has done at least +35% on air.
yea it seems like their haveing some yield problems or atleast difficulty reaching high speeds with 0.11 but it should pick up as their tweak the process
isnt the x850xt based on the same core? or is that still .13?Quote:

Everything I have seen leads me to think that the x800xl won't be a great overclocker. The x850 might be a different story, though.
agreed. but if it really will be available for 300€ here (390usd).Quote:

390 USD for the x800xl? Retail is 299, and you can pre-order(yea I know... but eh I don't think anyone has them in stock right now) for around 330 or less.
For 390 USD I think you would be better off with other options (Sapphire x800 pro vivo modded to x800 xt pe?)
i've come to the same conclusion c42, i figured it was just a power issue... but since the powercolor has the external power connecter, that obviously isnt the case, unless this particular card is a lemon.
i did notice they got the core up to 445mhz, in doom3 800x600, but 430mhz everywhere else... whereas any other review is just ~430mhz everywhere. dunno if that means anything.
also, EVERYTHING is more expensive in europe, so its not like the x800xl will be $390, and the x800pro will be $400... more like $490. ;)
in germany 470usd for an x800pro and 650 for a pe are a great deal
dunno why that is. (tax maybe 16%)
Ahh yea forgot you guys have VAT and whatnot. If you bought from US(assuming shipping doesn't kill it) would you be able to get a good deal? Seeing as how the Euro is doing vs the USD?
it pretty much balances out, with shipping... though i think it is slightly cheaper to buy from the US, if someone here is willing to buy, and resend it.
Ahh ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
maybe the XLs are just in a desperate need of some voltmodding?
Is what I was thinking/hoping !Quote:

Definetly the best card for the price(Assuming they stay near the MSRP). If voltmodding does the trick to get this to O/C like the other x800s like to, then this will be quite the card.
Is it possible they are putting the good cores aside for a newer model, say X900 XT with 110nm or some such?
I hope they don't SUCK, I pre-ordered one from ATI for $299-20% = $239 + Tax/Shpg. Thought it'd be a nice 24/7 gamer card.
C
could be the heatsink sucks
I think it lacks the power - if we could figure out a way to solder the power connector on it (like on the 9600PRO :) ) then the overclocks may improve a lot.
Every time someone doesnt read a thread, a quote is performed and a little bit of code dies! Its because of this that we have windows you know :p:Quote:

R520 being .9, and the x850's being 1.3, im betting that the 110 process is stuck between the 2 and has the worst of both. R520's will overclcok like mofo's though.
>>R520's will overclcok like mofo's though
Somehow I am not 100% confident :p
Almost worth saving for x850xt if the xl's are not gonna overclock at all. Ive been planning on getting one of them for a while. Damn.
Feiticeira
Well, I hope somebody will voltmod an X800XL soon with good cooling and then we will know what's going there.
Why not? The prescott, and the winchester both do faily well, and OC better than their 130 counterparts. Especially with xtreme cooling, minus the bug with the winnies. I reckon that the R520 with a peltier will be the 3d01 choice when it comes out, 700 at least on the core, and mem, well, it's a toss up
The early reviews showed very LITTLE headroom for the GPU, but BIG OC numbers for the memory...580, I believe. We'll see, I guess.... we have to put the cold on 'em and up the Volts then we;ll know more :D
C
Well it looks like these cards have shipped from a few places now, i know ocuk has shipped some, anybody have any news on how there doing yet? 8 days until i have to make my decision, should have more news by then i guess.
Dave
For sure this is the case, lets all try and be optimistic about these cards folks :).Quote:

Slap a peltier onto one of these, and give her some juice, and we'll be seeing a great overclock on the core, easily (I hope).
20 degrees sub-ambient and a good overvolt makes all the difference. I'll bet that the stock XL cooler is crummy as well - there's a reason the X850 XT has that huge honking blower strapped onto it ;) ;).
just ordered one here in a shop at spain, club3d to concrete. I hope to have it in a few days, with the new neo4 (just available here at spain...) and if someone discovers how to hardmod it, ill try.
Seeya :)
I hear it's mainly because the 110nm core is a new process and isnt fully developed yet. That's why you can't get a very good overclock on them, otherwise they would use this process on the x850 cards.
But apart from not being so overclockable, i think theyre great value. Not as expensive as a 6800 GT and theres not that much diference.
here in spain, a 6800 GT pcie is 457€(like 550usd or so) and the x800xt is 371€ ( 470 or so...).
Thanks and see ya
I should be ordering one as soon as i know the DFI board has shipped and ill put it strait on the watercooling and post some results. Vid hope u get some results soon.
Dave
thanks  ill try to get it as high as i can... If i have the same luck as my previous 9600 Pro...
tomorrow i think ill have my neo4 and hope having the x800xl.
See ya pal.
Got it a pair of days ago.
WEll, lets see, its assembly by Club3d. Club3d x800xl 256 Mb gddr3 Dual DVI VIVO pcie. Got it here at spain for 371€, thats 473 usd. WEll, first of all, the heatsink, i must say it is beautiful, but hell its small and slim. To be real its the same the 9800 XT had.

WEll, u cant see them so, memos are Samsung 434 Gc16, thats 1,6 ns. Not bad.
Just passed atitool, and got the best result at 450/1100 Mhz, not bad for the GPu, but whats even more is that i cant get the fan to go full speed. I mean, when i boot pc the fan goes fast, and when loading windows, goes slower, rivatuner says it goes 43% of the speed. And is at 37º idle with a 30º temp outside.
Im waiting to get a Ati Silender 5 and some Zalman heatsinks for the memory.
Well, hope it helps.
See ya
how fast can you get it manually, to pass (3dmark2k1)nature without artifacts?
thatd pretty expensive for something that was suposted to be $300... :(
Pikard u have to think thath here in Europe everything is like 100 usd more expensive than there. If there was a shop, like newegg fe that sent parts to Spain, everryone would buy there.
For example now i want to byt 2x 512 Gskill pc4800 LA, here buying them in the UK its 330€, sthg like 430 usd. And if i buy them there, its like 300 usd, o 200€ or so.
Ill benchmark it better and tell u about it.
See ya
hmm, so europe hit the "cheaper" prices faster then we did in the USA... :D
and they are still at $380+ over here...
My ATI pre-order is like 5 weeks old.... wonder when they'll ship?
C
just got off the phone with ATI online shop and they say x800xl will ship a end of February..... so about 3 weeks.
C
how com ati will ship them end of february ?
i saw them available here in my country...slovenija...
we have sapphire here in Israel, in-stock! :D
Got my PowerColor X800XL today from overclockers.uk. Comes with 1.6ns DDR3 chips as well as power connector and VIVO. Most other brand XLs comes with 2.0ns chips (ATI, Saphire...) The stock heatsink seems to be one of the better quality ones out there but it will be replaced soon by Maze4 with Peltier and Zalman RAM sinks.

Are you gonna do any mods on it??
Any known guide?
Congrats for the card
See ya! :toast:
As far as I know there are no known guide out yet. I will just settle for peltier+water cooling and air flow over the ram sinks for now. I am waiting for my water cooling parts to arrive as well as a 110W 15v peltier since I have a aux 15V PSU. I would go for higher wattage but can't seem to find any 40x40mm peltiers around with higher ratings. There is a 226W but it's rated 24V so it would turn out to be around the same wattage. Should prove to be decent overclock. If volt mod is possible I will definately try that.
The layout of the PCB is somewhat different but the ISL6522CBs on the back of the board still seems to be in the same location. I will probably try pencil modding.
I have a club3D x800XL like viddax^2 ;) and i wanna put a new heatsink ATI silenter 5 too ;), but the problem is on gpu more than memory speed.
got my x800xl on friday, but only got it all set up on monday thanks to amtrak, all running stock at mo as gaming distracted me from overclocking but ill post results from standard watercooling soon.
Dave

But i find one problem in ur config, yes peltier may run well, but youll need the Volmod for sure, dont think it will go up 450 Mhz... With me memory i think no problem...
See ya and if u would make a voltmod guide, we would be very grateful ;)
these 800XL's were suposed to retail for 299. why are they showing up at 450. plus on newegg and other sites? is this because they arent out in masses yet? just looking at the prices of the 800XL's and about shat my self
Charlie
what is that online store you pre-order your 800XL from for 299. ?
thx perc,
That happens with most gfx cards. Just give it a month or so and it'll calm down in price.
Started overclocking last night and core goes to 455, 457 and ATI tool picks up little errors. Not all together bad but i was hoping for a tiny bit more on water. Hopefully as there was room to put RAMsinks on underside of card that should clock better. Do the big air coolers also cool the RAM or can u also put RAMsinks on?
Dave
Depends on what brand you are using. The PowerColor fan cools all the front side RAM more or less. And you can stick some sinks on the back and add a fan for airflow.
It's not really that much. The Club 3d X800XL costs about 295€ in Germany and many shops ship european-wide.Quote:

You can try geizhals.at, it's a great european price-search website.
Regarding the voltage mod:
when the ISL6522CBs are on the backside, I'm sure you can use the good old pencil mod. Just make sure you 'pencil' the resistor connected to the same pin of the ISL6522CB like on the other cards.
maybe for some things yes, but for example i am trying to get a pair of 512 Mb sticks gskill pc4800 LA. in the USA 1 Gb is $292, thats 228€, in Germany its 298€ and in the UK is 330€...
Some things are really expensive here in Europe...
WEll have to go to :usa: to buy :D
mmm, i dont know much about resistors and so, can you show some pics?
Thanks a lot Phobos
ati doesnt care that the x800xl sucks at ocing, 90% of users never overclock, just the 10% like us do and those that want xtreme clocks will just get the x800 or x850xt anyway but at like $500 :( at least the x800xl is better than the x800pro and both are the same price. Hopefully prices go down to $330-350 in a month when supply picks up.
The Gskill pc4800LA is 290€ here in Germany. That's still too expensive ;)Quote:

Regarding the resistor: Have a look at the X800 Pro / XT V-Mods and you will see that you have to paint a resistor with some pencil brushes. If this resistor is at the same location on your card I'm pretty sure you can do the V-mod that way.
i got my 800xl two days ago and i started oc and i got:
core:400@476
mem:500@579
on MCW50-T
without artifacts!
any vmod guide yet?

Nice clocks!
I'm glad to see such a success; 6000 3d05 is almost twice as much as my 9800XT did.Quote:

I'm thinking this will be a GREAT gamer card.
C
Why do you say it will be a great gaming card?
The price?
or does it have some technology on it that helps with gaming? (sorry i dont know)
I've got a powercolor X800XL, it can't clock well, i don't know why, this site http://www.vr-zone.com.sg/?i=1721&s=5 can clock to 440/1120 and having the same card he's able to clock that high? Mine is only 425/1090.
I think it'll be a good gaming card, because i hate to have a $500 GPU sitting in my gamng rig depreciating, losing it's value.Quote:

I couldn't enjoy a 500$ GPU.. I'd think every day, "how much is it still worth; should I try to sell it on ebay while it hasn't lost that much of its value"
Had this feeling with my 9800XT and I hate it :am: ... and if I want to make an investment, I'd rather buy some silver coins lol.

See ya! :D
viddax^2, what's the max you can get without any vmods?! :D
cause personally, i do believe that the ones with the external power connector will OC higher!
ATM, i'm tending toward the PowerColor one, which has the external power connector, 1.6ns RAM, Dual DVI & ViVo. :D
Not sure about it coz the fan doesnt go any faster than 43% , i got nearly 450/550 or sthg like that, think i can go higher but after a while the temp rises and it starts making little artifacts...
Ill have to try and manually connect the fan to the PSU...
See ya :D
hey... I tried the X800XL from Club 3D yesterday. A very nice card, but the price in Denmark is about 350-360€ :(
jackal83, can you tell us some more?! :D
The Club3d one 341€ here in Spain, the prize has gone down 38€ in less than a month :slobber:
See ya" :toast:
Got my PowerColor up to 495 core and 545 mem. Running with 1 radiator only atm and waiting for 2nd BlackIce to arrive.
koei, how about some benchies?! :D
I will soon. My old OCZ rev2 are gimp and wont oc good. Just bought a pair of Mushkin that seems to be holding up the MHz pretty well. Going to get things stable then run some benches.
System clocked and stable. Got memory to running at 550MHz.
Is this at stock? or with h2O or ATI silenter 5 + heatsink in memories. Nice clock!
koei, thank you very very much :toast:
but can you give us 01 & 03 benchies too?! :D
Tweaked a bit, 555 memory...
It's running on water, Maze4, 110W peltier, Zalman RAMsinks and a 92mm fan over it for airflow.
jeje, nice Koei.
I was thinking about a nice Vgpu and Vmem mod, with a 265W peltier+ water...
What do u think?
Thanx seeya!
I believe that pelt is 24V. If you have something to power it it's all good. Otherwise if you hook it up to your PSU, you are only getting about half the watage. This 110W pelt seems sufficient for me, tho the thempreture sensor reports the core as being 268 degrees so I can't really tell, but I assume it's below zero.
When you hook it up to your 12V PSU you will only get 1/4 of the power! Because P=U²/R.
These chips will overclock worse due to the lack of low-k dielectric in the .11 process. The XL chip will run hotter due to the current leakage compared to a .11 + low-k. Watercooling and a voltmod should reach the average 20% overclock while the more xtreme overclockers - you know who you are ;) - will prolly top out at 30%. Seriously, if you want high clocks, this won't be the card for you. Buy an X800XT for a little more and you won't have to work so hard reaching 550-575.
As to the fan speed problem: For kicks, plug it into a motherboard fan header as it should be the usual 12 volt fan. Then see how good an O/C you can get on stock cooling. I'd love to know.
And another review: http://www.hothardware.com/viewartic...?articleid=643
They reached 442core/1116mem. 10% with stock kit is pretty average. Makes 20% seem very doable. Certainly wait for the newer revisions of this chip once the FAB starts pumping them out in quantity. Should get us a better overclocker.
Oh, yea . . .my 2 cents for what it's worth!
Picked up a BBA x800 xl from CompUSA on Thursday. Played about 8 hours of halflife2 and doom3 on it before starting to see artifacts, on Saturday. Now, I get serious artifacts (mostly green or magenta pixels) even at the desktop (and even clearly visible on the POST screens on a cold boot!). This was at stock speeds; downloaded ATI try tools, and _downclocked_ the ram and gpu to no avail--still tons of artifacts.
Is it unheard for a card to be fine for 10 hours of use, and then to go bad so severely, so quickly, on its own? Could it have been caused by my PSU or Motherboard? (500W Fortron Blue Storm ATX12v 2.0 compliant, DFI Ultra-D, 1G Gskill LE, 1 HD, a few 80mm fans, 3200+ winchester).
Sounds like some bad ram on the card. I would return it for another and you will be good to go.
i mod a Thermalright SLK900a on my x800xl + 92mm fan@4000rpm.....
cut some p3 slot heatsink to small piece for my memory cooling....
so far maximum speed is 475core/580 mem....cant push anymore....damn

Theres sure some sweet prices on these ($290). Its strange that the overclock on stock volts is so limited (10% max). Have ATI put any limitation in place?
Yeah, they dont have a low-k die or the core is missing an extra layer that stops current leak more or something.
I think the time will come when ATI improved their new manufacturing process and then it maybe a nice overclocker :).
just bought a powercolor x800xl ,
