I am tihnking in buying a rad but i don't know which is better. The black ice 2 with the 2 120mm fans or the cheaper heatercore. Which one is better.

Can't really beat a car heater core except with a bigger heater core.
??...the plain heatercore from dangerden is better than the black ice
...same thing?
yeah, i think the double heater core performs at least as good as the dual black ice radiator and costs less...
definatly go with the double heatercore. it is cheaper and will give you better performance than the black ice
...i am thinking of painting it blue. Do i just spray paint it blue or...? I really don't know.
just put something to cover the fins and paint the outside

just like that
well I can't post pics untill my roomie gets back with her camera....sorry m8.
You don't need to put tape on the fins just hold the spray can far away and go at it.
i think i will cover the fins. You tryin to trick me
No actually I painted mine black with spray paint. and I didn't cover anything. That was the whole point, to paint the heatercore including the fins. Why bother painting, if you're not going to paint everything? And if you think painting the fins is going to increase your temps, then you should go back to air cooling. Ever notice the black Ice extreme II is completely painted?Quote:

....ok,k,k...you don't need to get all hasty. I get it now. I will paint it blue.

Good to see you Weapon :D
How is that shroud design tutorial coming along?

I have all the pics, etc. finished - its just a matter of getting the time to write it up and explain it. unfortunately - it is on a list with several other projects that have deadlines. :(Quote:

sweet weapon! i remember that thread hehe :D
good to see you back! if you want i can help you writing that guide :)
let me know :toast:
you can use a lot of the stuff you posted in threads like the one you linked to and just change some sentences and words to make it the text for your guide ;) helps a lot to save time and it makes more fun to work on text like that and adding and changing stuff than writing all the things youve said so often down again from scratch :)
and yes, painting a heatercore doesnt really have a bad impact on temps. afaik painting it black with a thin layer of spray paint even increases the heat dissipation ;)
that spary paint is a very very very thin layer, and the paint is not insulating that much, especially since its so thin. if youd use silicon based paint instead you would def get worse temps as it insulates a lot and will create a much much thciker film of paint on the surface of the rad/fins.
thanks for the offer - much appreciated. I think I can get it nailed down before long though. I was debating whether I should go for the plexi shroud or the metal one - either can be done with a few tools at home but the metal one requires a little more skill and hardware to really nail it - at least that was my take on it.Quote:

I also got temporarily sidetracked when I discovered my cable modem was running hella hot - you could feel the heat pouring out of the vents. So I yanked it apart and discovered zero cooling measures (no real surprises there) and the main processor setting on a not-so-lovely 55C during online gaming. I ended up mounting a hsf on the main chip and wiring it into the PCB for power - that was a fun little project but I probably should have watercooled it just to be silly...
6002a?
yep - mcw6002a with a mcp650. the entire loop is going to something along the lines of:Quote:

other toyz in the box - modded nf7-s, mobile xp2600, 512mb (256 x2) OCZ pc3700 plat. EB, enermax 651 psu, 9800xt, coolermaster muskateer, twin vantec nexus fan controllers, microcool sinks on all the heat producing chips, dual 74gb raptors, 5 120mm fans, 4 80mm fans, etc.
I am still debating some other moddage like a 120mm fan mounted to the back of the mobo tray to cool the backside of the socket and the mosfet area or possibly making a couple of waterblocks to handle that along with some other moddage. The U2-UFO has so much space that it allows a lot of mods that normally wouldn't be possible. The most cramped area behind the mobo tray still leaves about 2.5" of clearance - the other sections on the back of the mobo tray have something closer to 8.5" of clearance to the opposite case panel. Fitting watercooling into this case is about as hard as trying to figure out how to fit 2 people into a full sized Hummer H2. For example, I was playing around with the spacing earlier and If I wanted to cramp it a little, I could fit a '86 chevette core and dual '77 b'villes with 3 swiftech 650 pumps. playing around with this case leads to a lot of :D
time to get back on topic. :)
this is why painting a heatercore doesn't screw up performance -
top of a core with the top tank removed:
http://www.cox-internet.com/weapon/i...i_flowchan.jpg
the slits indicated by the arrows = water flow channels - the solid sections in between the slits are the top layers of the fins for airflow.
if you peel those solid sections back, you will see:
http://www.cox-internet.com/weapon/i..._finschans.jpg
the red arrows on the left point to the waterflow channels, the blue arrows on the right point to the finned fins that are the ones in contact with the air.
--fins on the fins = mega surface area
on to some hardcore core peeling action:

^note the silver solder line on the edges of the core. as long as the paint doesn't get past those, you aren't effecting the area where the cooling primarily takes place - i.e. the fins that are on the layers of copper fins.
one more:

the arrow points to an opened up waterchannel.
everyone see how they work?
