High pitch sound driving me crazy!!!!!

I've used both the msi k8n neo and the epox 8kda3 and both of them had the same problem. When the system is both overclocked and at stock (more so when overclocked)

I get this high pitched sound/sqweel coming from the mofsets area.... i'm pretty sure the sound is from those rings with copper wire wrapped around it.

I've tried an enermax 470w psu, vantec stealth 470w psu, and a generic 320w psu but still get the same sound.

I found this but it didn't really help me.

and yes I am using a seagate IV harddrive, but i've also tried other one as well, but it's the same thing.

Back when I had my Abit NF7 using the same components, I didn't get any high pitch sound. Could I have just gotten two bad boards?

try putting it under load, then making it idle. Does it go away when its under load?

Right now it's louder at idle then goes away when running prime 95

I have noticed something of my system also doing that while/after playing Painkiller....

For my its the OCP kicking in when the system is idle, when its under load its not a problem anymore because the CPU is drawing all of that extra current.

its the 8kda3j or epox motherboard you have. Mine makes the sizzling noise too.

It's the chokes! Take a pencil or something non-conductive and touch the chokes when they are making the sound - LIGHTLY!. When you get to the right one, it will change the tone/pitch of the sound.

This is your victim. All you have to do is put some non-conductive glue to secure it 100% and you're all set. I've done it on a videocard and on one of the NF7-S boards I had.

Probably a newb question, but what are the chokes? and isn't a pencil conductive?:confused:

I got that problem to with my Epox 8KDA3+
Im hitting everything on the mobo :shrug: but the sound is still there , maybe u could shouw us a picture of what u mean

Did you try identifying the source of the sound on your mobo?

Btw, often there's a sound when scrolling - choke by the AGP on my 8RDA+ a while ago.

I think if you google for "choke" in images, you should be able to find it. STEvil explained pretty good, though.

I dunno, never bothered tracking it down and my system is all torn apart atm.

Ok I tried touching the chokes with a pencil but the high pitch sound continues :(

This has happened on two boards, do you think the cpu's causing this?

When i press hard on one choke the sound is gone , but when i released it the sound is back :(

lol, ain't that the way it goes? :D This is good to know, for the future, thanx Ivan. :) My old 8RDA+ did that for about 3-4 months, driving me the same kinda nuts, then finally stopped. Maybe I bumped a choke into a more stable position. (?)

Is the LOGO Instant glue(cyanoacrylic) safe for that kind of work?
If not what is the best out there??

superglue attacks the pcb in theory, i dont think its a problem though as ive used quite a lot of superglue on my board without any problems.

What kind of glue did you use?

What about regular hot gun glue?
and do you cover the whole choke? won't the glue melt though, cause those things get really hot!

Never tried it with a glue gun. However, the choke is made of ceramic and metal so temperature shouldn't be an issue IMO.

I just touched mine and they are pretty cool. I think im gonna try hot glue :D

Yep, just put my finger on one of the chokes and can't hold it on there for more then two seconds :(
If I use hot glue, it'll definitely melt! maybe house goop?

Tried the glue trick and it didn't work :(

First i take a screwdriver ( very small one ) and moved the copper around the ceramic donut , so that the copper is equaly over the donut
Then i push hard at it and glueded with hot glue ( coils are cold here )

I don't think you have to cover the whole thing. Just 1 side, maybe? You might try partial coverage first to see if it helps. As long as the glue goes through the whole choke to the PCB, it will usually help IMO.

I have the same problem on my 8KDA3J too, and it's really annoying. So I thought I should give the glue trick a shot.

But how do I know the glue is not conductive?

my seagate hdd sounds like that i have sended it back 3times and im gonna send it back tomorrow again still beeping, its an 160gb s-ata hdd and i have asked if they could replace it with an western digital instead

i secured the vdd vcore and vdimm mods on my a7n8 deluxe rev2.0 with superglue and secured the wires fro and to the solder spots, the solder spots themselves, the pots and the meassureing cables to check vdimm vdd and vcore all with super glue!

that was like 1 year ago and the board is still running fine without any sign of corrosion :)

i used "pattex blitz gel" its not liquid but sort of creamy wich makes it easier to apply as it doesnt run down or drop off, and it glues stuff in a second literally when you press the two parts together!

I've tried everything now, including the glue trick.

I'm thinking about soldering off the chokes and buy some chokes similar ti them, which hopefully will be more quiet. But how do I measure a choke?

Update: Hey guys, I've done some research on this and I think that painting the chokes with nail-varnish could quiet those bastards.

Gonna try it out as soon as I get my board back from RMA.

Update#2: Hey guys; try this out: Disable your integrated NIC and listen for the sound. I've been talking a couple of guys who don't use the integrated NICs, and their boards are quiet as stones.

Or can anyone just kill my theory by telling me that they get the noice without using the NIC?

The noise still there even after disabling the integrated NIC :(

Today i try glue/silicon trick on my Epox 8KDA3J , but anyone know hows with others nforce3 based boards , im espeicaly interested is DFI LanParty III UT have same problem.

For now i had Epox 8KDA3J and MSI K8N Neo FSR both are unaceptable for quiet computer ( theyre laudest part of my box atm ).

What's interesting about this is that i only get the annoying high pitch whine when using my mouse wheel, or when accessing the network/internet over the on-board lan. Damn bloody annoying it is. Will try the above suggestions in an attempt to find the cause.

I RMA:d my board, and now I've got a new one which is Rev 2.2, and the sound is gone!

They've rearranged the mosfet area and there are now 3 chokes instead of 2.

Hey guys...I use ShoeGoo to secure the chokes...you should too.

Nothing Good , i have DFI LanParty UT NF3 now ( i had Epox 8KDA3j and MSI K8N Neo-FSR ). The high pitch sound from chockes is gone. But you know, i steel hear other high pitch sound that existed in my previous mb's. I tried different processor and sound was lauder. I hear its laud when im priming. I think that cpu also make noise. I checked on A64 3000+ , mabe someone hear pitch and have couple cpus to check if its only common for one model or something.

It's with Ultra-D vcore at 1.6v, whenever the mobo temp is at 59C the whine starts, when temp drops to 58C it goes away

UBER annoying

it is coming from the voltage regulators area I only spotted one choke, it's perpendicular to the mobo, i tried pushing it gently, i'm afraid to push anything too hard tho :/

suggestions? :shrug:

I changed the MHz and vcore, it still happens at 59 C

Wierd my Ultra-d has two chokes, one perpendicular to pci slots and one parallel. Both on either side of a hetsink on mobo below cpu socket.

I've seen this issue resonate thru the forums so many times it's not even funny. Hehe. Resonance lives.

The noise is coming from the Blue area, and according to previous posts I think the choke in pink area is the source.

I figured it out!!

THIS ISSUE IS DIRECTLY RELATED to one I had with a previous mobo:

at cpu voltage close to 1.7v the old ultra-d's inductor blew up

this ultra-d's same top inductor gets hotter than the rest and emits high pitch noise at 59°C !!

Since the coil is INSIDE, there's no way to glue it now, is there?

Quite often, a high pitched sound is a pointer to a Capacitor on its way out too!

I have had Caps fail on Mobos, PSUs ( Currently got 2 Monitors doing that - but not really too bothered as I have a couple of new ones on their way ).
