how ATI and Nvidia are handling the supply and demand for the X800 and 6800's is just pathetic. I mean almost 3 1/2 months since retail release and supply is still near non existant...

wow I am surprised they hit retail so quick. I just got mine yesterday.
I would try and pick one up when they go back in stock. I have been playing with mine all day. Even controlling the voltage is easier then a VR modded vddr. The old way I would get down in my case with a flashlight and a little screw driver to adjust the vr. With the booster, I just reach a hand inside from my seat, and adjust away!

Hmm, I can't make up my mind. The mobo compatibility chart says they only tested up to 3.4v on an AN7. You can already give it 3.2v in the BIOS, so it's not that much of a boost. :rolleyes: Still, I don't know how much the power filtering helps, and I don't know if that max they listed is the "safe" max or what. :confused:

I don't understand this voltmod device. The only selling point I can see for it is that it supposedly offers a cleaner Vdimm. (Which is easily claimed and extremely difficult to disprove). Otherwise you are paying close to $70 for a volt mod.
1. If you are pushing your ram hard enough to need this and you don't have a quality PSU anyway, you're a fool.
2. You can voltmod yourself for ~2$ or get it done (along with any voltmods you want) for 15-25$
3. Reusability wont be that high as ddr2 will arrive eventually.
4. If you can't handle a soldering iron, you really aren't qualified to be putting 3.9v through your ram.
5. It voids your mobo and ram warranty just as much as a vmod would.
6. If what I'm hearing is right, it puts out quite a lot of heat. Quite simply, that sounds bad to me.
I see one use for it. If you don't want to run 24/7 high vdimm, and have a lot of systems that you just want to play around with high vdimm on.
Once price goes down to $40>, then I can see a use for it (simply to be lazy). But laziness just isn't worth $60 plus shipping to me.
I suppose my finger isn't on the pulse of Xtreme, but I don't see what the frenzy is about.
The advantages are obvious. No need to mod. It won't void your warranty because there are no physical mods. It allows for up to 3.9v, instead of the usual 3.3v. No need to mod the PSU. Not to mention you can use it in more than one mobo. It's almost like a memory upgrade.
Well, I think one of the nice things is that you don't have to get your 3.3v rail up to 3.8v (loaded) just to run 3.6v through your ram. Not to mention it makes it easy to adjust when using different types of ram as in my case and quick testing multiple boards as many on this forum have. I think $60-70 is worth the convenience.
I haven't bought the unit yet just because I have 2 concerns: 1) HEAT (although my bh-5 does pretty good, the 3700eb runs hot enough already and doesn't need any help) 2) If filling the extra slot in the mobo creates any kind of issue that limits FSB - mobo's can get really flaky about that kind of stuff.

True... but I can afford about 30 mods for the cost of it... so unless you own 30+ mobo's and only run them one at a time, I've got you beat.

So you believe using pamona grabbers to do a mod means you aren't violating warranty terms? You are forcing more voltage through the motherboard than it was built to handle. Your warranty is void as hell. Besides if you can solder worth a damn, you can undo a mod and leave absolutely no trace. So the only people that is a "Pro" for are sloppy solderers without ethics.
I don't see any reason to debate this item... Either you buy one or you don't. Why should it matter to either party what the other does?
I've soldered professionally for many years, who cares, If I don't feel like screwing around making semi/permanent mods to hardware? Am I somewhat less Xtreme if I don't solder it? LMAO.. WTH is the point of debate? Who cares if another forum member decides to add a bit of profit to OCZ's pockets.....
when the inevitable happens and some hardware gets cooked, so what, won't be the first, nor the last..
Only discussion here should be how well these things work, not why I should or shouldn't spend MY cash on one....

Before I saw the price I shrugged my shoulders and figured it was just so people wouldn't have to bother. But people are paying $70 for something that could not possibly have more than $10 in parts, I can't see why anyone would when we have forum members who do vmods for the cost of shipping.
When someone says a reason for buying is that it maintains their warranty, that irritates me. Why? Firstly it is causing resellers and Manufacturers alike to become nazi'esque in their RMA procedures, which screws everyone. More-over, the people I imagine buying this product are the same people who fill newegg's refurbs with radeons shorting on a lifetime's supply of AS3 stuffed under the BGA chips and gpu. They are the people who burn up caps on motherboards with their idiocy and cost me rma shipping when I have to return their boards. They are the people who kill their hardware then sell it on ebay as "worked when pulled, as-is". The number one advantage of this product is that it leaves no trace behind. That is what will sell it to most people, and that winds up screwing the honest people who know what they are doing in the end.
Look at all the disadvantages already found with this product. It's bulky, hot, and the compatability list is about twenty boards long. Can you explain why it's constantly out of stock? Sure a few experienced users just want to save the time of doing the mod when they are testing out boards. But that doesn't account for how fast these are selling. The only market large enough for this are the people who DON'T know what they are doing and buy this figuring that even if it kills something they can just RMA it and no one will be the wiser.
So who is to blame for the just under $60 price tag? Do we blame the retailers for gouging? OCZ for making there cut?component suppliers? PCB maker? Shipper? OCZ has already said $49, expected street price less.. So right now, everyone with stock is doing as they all do... Supply and demand....Quote:

BTW, The LED Driver alone is around $6.00 in 100 lot, larger quanity will get it down a bit, but not that much, cost is probably somewhere closer to $15....
Hell-Fire no longer mods for shipping cost, and I'm not aware of anyone else doing so.. And to be Honest I think he should of quit the freebies long ago, but he is the one setting the value on his time.
Plug and play is probably the biggest advantage....

I don't disagree here, but your voice, nor mine, will have ANY effect on dishonest members, here or on Ebay....
Do you actually think soldered wires, make any difference to dishonest people? Do you really think that someone who fried the motherboard shorting a connection, or lifting a trace, will be any slower to RMA than if they had used the Booster? You at least insinuate you have the skill to do your own mods, so with your knowledge, would you have any problem doing mods (or removing) in such a manner as to have a problem RMA'ing?Quote:

Most places simply don't have the resources to look that closely at return merchandise.

Actually its relatively small, and with a little additional thought could be made to reside in the same size, or smaller package as an actual memory module. Heat can be managed, as most here are well aware of. compatibility list? 20 boards? That list will certainly grow, what do you expect OCZ to test every DDR board in existence? There's one other advantage yet to be shared. Anytime we get a new mobo on the market, we have to wait until one of the genius's around here figures out the vdimm mod.
I don't spend much time on actually soldering as I do waiting for a mod to show up and then trying to find where that thread exists. Sure seems a lot easier to just plug-and-play and not waste time looking for vmod threads.
Not to mention, how many times have you looked over a vmod thread, memorized the soldering points, but when your computer was apart and soldering iron was in hand you were saying to yourself, "Oh crap, Was I supposed to solder leg 8 or 7?!"
Time = $$$
This booster saves time, therefore it saves $$$ :P
Does anybody know if they sell any in Canada? I was about to finalise my purchase at excaliburpc, but then I saw how much the shipping charges would be. Around $30 - $40 US just to ship that little thing across the border? Pffft, whatever.
I paid $53 for my K8N Pro :D While popping a $60 booster in a memory slot might save time ... soldering a piece of wire to two points sure was a lot cheaper . And heck, way more fun ;)Quote:

I don't know about the specific LED screen. But I've seen LED screens selling for less than $2 each in Quantity 1, so I don't know why they'd be buying $600/100 ones. While I do think OCZ and resellers are gouging on the price here, I can't fault them for it, as you said, supply and demand. My point is that the price will make persons who have the knowledge to use this device properly turn it down and simply continue to VMod, which means the target market isn't people who can and will use the product responsibly.

While it's nice to pull a mod out and put it in another system, I doubt that is a big selling point. I wouldn't vmod a board just to use until I get my hands on another toy. The ironic twist to that is that I bought a (supposedly new) motherboard from a reseller once. It arrived DOA with a resister burnt. I RMA'ed it, and they refused the RMA because they noticed the burnt resistor when I sent it back. I had to dispute the charge with my credit card before they actually shipped me a replacement.Quote:

If it interferes with board electronics, I consider it bulky. Ti4600's were bulky. SLK900's are bulky. This is bulky. Ram is not the most convienient place to cool. You can get a breeze over them fairly easily, but direct airflow towards them is quite a hassel. No doubt the list will grow... but I wouldn't want to be the one buying it only to find that my board was one of the unsupported ones.Quote:

Well, to be honest I'm more then capable of doing any of the mods, on pretty much any hardware, however, if this thing will save me some time, and is basically portable, and a one time investment.... This is a matter of preference, and even though I soldered Professionally for almost 30 years I would rather push this thing in a dimm slot, so call me lazy, but WTH...

LMAO, well its just the opposite here, I worked the electronics industry for longer than I care to admit, and I guarantee you I know more "people that Can't, then can.... Sure most people can learn, and some can even do, but working SMD devices is a bit overwhelming for the inexperienced...

Well, If I were limited to a single board, or not planning on getting new hardware I would agree, but for me, and I'm sure a few others it is worth the cash to save a few minutes time... Plus there is the cool factor/gadget, whatever... Hell I'm a technology freak, I enjoy playing with new toys... Oh, and it won't always cost you $70 bux, once the gouging stops it will be under $50, and a few bucks to ship... AND, its going to take more then a few minutes to go from no mods to 3.3 + capability for most.. Even if your good enough to solder in the mod, you still have to adjust, then there is the matter of the PSU as well... Average person doing those mods is going to be over 5 minutes.

well that is your perogative, however, even IF this were true why shouldn't OCZ, or any other company take advantage of the market? You could say the same thing about a Prom or a Vapo, as well, only difference is price keeps it out of the possesion of the masses. Think about it, plenty of products promote warranty voiding, hell even TIM, and as far as that goes, as soon as you Overclock you void most warranties, so how many here would not RMA dead hardware after a mild OC? Technically the owners warranty will most likely have been void long before it sees the OCZ booster...

That's why I figure MOST of the Xtreme members are buying it. It's something new that hasn't been done before. But would OCZ really release it if the only people who were going to buy it are Xtreme members? What I definately feel OCZ needs to do is put a warning in item descriptions and included with the product saying that using it will void your motherboard and (if using A64) cpu warranties and if used to move ram voltage above what your ram is spec'ed for will void your ram warranty as well.
If it's proven independantly that this does offer significantly cleaner voltage, hell I might buy it. But more likely I'd grab the specs, have an electrical engineer buddy or two give me a hand and build one that solders to the back of the motherboard with the heat-dissipating components somewhere they would be easier to cool. It IS a neat gadget. But I get a bee in my bonnet when I see people assuming it's warranty-safe just because it is user-friendly and wrapped up in a simple plug and play package.

My point is that I can do these mods so fast (Only thing that's a PITA is driving to the shack and trying to find the right VR's I must have a drawer full of useless ones by now from buying those "assortments" because they didn't sell what I needed single.) that unless I was working on at least five boards at any given time, or for some reason needed to constantly remove (not just disable) the mods, I really don't find soldering the mods that much less convenient.

Well, It literally takes me the time to remove my PSU cover and boot into bios plus maybe ten seconds to adjust my PSU, If I do something else while my iron heats up (I use a cheap 15w), I've got maybe thirty seconds per joint, tops. Of course if I only wanted accuracy to .1v, I could make the adjustment in bios in a matter of seconds.

Technically, but there are certain things that simply don't kill chips (bumping a 2500+ barton to 3200+ speeds), and things that sometimes will (forcing 3.9vdimm down your board, ram and Mem controller's throat). We have to trust our better judgement. I think the requirement that you use only stock tim and heatsink on amd's chips is retarded. But running nearly 4v through a line meant to take 2.5v is among the things I consider "warranty-voiding". Why? If something bad happens while your cpu is under AS5 and a slk948U, it's pretty definate that it wasn't the AS5's fault. If something bad happens while you have 3.9v going to ram, there's a damn good chance it was the voltages fault.
8. I did. That reseller now has something like a 2.1 reseller rating. But it wasn't burnt as in burnt out, it was burnt as in a retard with a soldering iron scorched it pitch black and clearly melted a patch of board surrounding it.
9. Yes, but skilled solderers aren't profiting off of selling their skills to people who will damage these electronics and turn around and rma them. Would someone in services offering "clean" vmod removals from dead hardware for RMA be allowed to keep the thread? I think not.

Excepting a very awkwardly placed side blowhole, how are you going to get a permanent fan mounted to cool ram without jumping through hoops? This is to make a point about what people I feel this device is marketed towards. I think it is mostly marketed towards the people who can't or won't vmod. I have a booster,and have been playing with it for a few day's now. I really like it. I vmod all my boards and will continue to do vcore mod's if needed, but the booster is great. On my K8NSpro I needed to run a very high +3.3v rail just to get 3.2vddr. With the booster I keep my +3.3v within reason and still get all the volts I want. Plus since I have my board out of the case a lot, I have to mount the VR's on the MB itself. This makes getting in there with a screw driver and flashlight to get to the VR very annoying. With the booster I just reach in and turn the knob. Quite convenient.
Also I never have or never will RMA a fried board!

Looking at the pictures, and reading some preliminary comments I doubt its filtered and regulated much better than an average motherboard, I was a bit dissapointed to see some comments mentioning a fair amount of voltage swing. Hopefully its just from a weak supply or such. I also doubt it would take an EE to reproduce, from the pics it looks like a fairly simple DC to DC variable PSU that most anyone could reproduce. I do find the Patent Pending interesting, and am QUITE anxious to see what is so original they feel is patentable....Quote:

Plenty of threads I've read here that offer many simple and effective cooling methods, I don't understand, you consider cooling memory "Jumping Through Hoops" but Vmods are simple? Not mechanically inclined or???? LOL............. Even these same "Noob Hardware Slayers" are probably capable of this. Maybe OCZ should market a memory cooling system, perhaps that would impress, and pacify you.

Hmmm how about the fact that a ot of have no idea how to do a vdimm mod from scratch? Take my case, I have an A7V880, there's maybe 5 - 10 members here that have one. I don't even know where to start trying to figure out a vdimm mod. I posted a thread in the mods section and got very little help. This booster will save me the time of running through probing the hell out of my board, trying to find 2.65v, and at the same time providing me with a lot more overclocking headroom.
Why should I solder VRs on to my board, if I don't have to? Not to mention I have 5 DDR motherboards I can use this on. 2 of which have vdimm mods available (8RDA and NF7). The other 3, no one knows nor cares.
So quit your attack on this wonderful device that saves time.
By the way, it also saves time because you don't have to rip the mobo from your case and solder, and put it back. :rolleyes:

All the high quality PSU's I've ever seen had rail adjustments either in the PSU or mountable outside (true-control). The only exceptions I can think of are the lower-end antecs... but frankly, most of the time they don't have the balls to be it a volt-modded rig.Quote:

I say if a product dies and you know for a fact it was a manufacturing error, it is right to RMA. I RMA'ed a cpu recently, because when I plugged it in, it wouldn't run stock... I went ahead and tinkered with it, in the process overclocking, and trying to figure out why it was incapable of running at 200HTT. Eventually I found that the memory controller was faulty. In another instance, I had a NF7-S die on me (back when they were $115). My cascade had had a slight leak (A beading at one of the barbs), I figured it had dripped down and shorted. The system kept rebooting, so I shut down and noticed the moisture. I let it dry and it never booted again. There was absolutely zero evidence that the death was my fault, but it was a case where I refuse to RMA, because my using it inproperly was the cause of its death.

It isn't difficult, just a pain in the ass. Mount everything, figure your clearance, empty the case, drill mounting holes for brackets, make brackets, reassemble case, mount fan to brackets and brackets to case. It would take me at least an hour in total (Making the brackets would take awhile... I'd probably wind up using slot covers) Mounting to the side of the case is easier, but in every case I own would interfere with devices in the 5.25 bays. Also, I've never been pleased with the results (accoustically) when I resorted to side-mounting a fan. That 1/8" sheet steel is a surprisingly good sound dampener.Quote:

FrozenCPU.com did indeed LIE by sending me a confirmation email on the 22nd saying that my item was packaged and shipped(without a tracking number). Funny thing is that they did have a tracking number right on the shipping label.

I hate when places send me the tracking number then dont ship for days. I got my tracking number from them last night, and they did ship. But i was hoping to get it yesterday to have fun this weekend.
