Need help with K8NS Pro VDIMM mod...

I did find the VDIMM mods for Gigabyte K8N and K8N PRO, but just can´t find the right one for the K8NS PRO. I´ve got these two pictures which show the "wire trick" mod(covers both vdimm and vbt) for K8N nonpro/pro, but I don´t know if I can use the same mod with my K8NS PRO so if anyone could confirm this?

It works for the K8NSNXP-939. I would suspect it would work for the K8NSpro

Thanks for the info pkrew. I also suspect that the mod(s) work cause atleast what I know K8N and K8NS PRO are the same board except the chipset. I just need confirmation so that I don´t burn my new board... :)

I'd like to know as well. Sitting here with solder and nowhere to put it. BTW, Jayl, how is that the above mods have no trimmer on them? Is that supposed to give it a set voltage? Don't tell me you go and adjust up your vdimm in bios after this mod.

I don´t exactly know why no trimmer is needed but I quess it is because that mod gives you as much vdimm as much your PSU gives from 3.3V line. So increasing your PSU´s 3.3V will increase the vdimm...

If your 3.3v rail is 3.3v , your Vddr will be 3.3v.
So its locking your Vdimm

As i said on the MuroBBS, Yellow=12v, Red=5v and Orange= 3.3v so lower mod is for K8NS PRO and NP.

:D Well, there you go, thanks... "problem" solved....

The mod in the second Pic does work. I am able to get up to 3.85V Vdimm with it as my PSU will adjust up that high..

Jay, have you tried it? Does it work perfectly? The VTT auto tracks?

Look on the bottom of your board and see if the layout is the same, if it is then the mod will work, if not, find the vdimm mosfet and use a variation of this mod.

The best way to do a 3.3v = Vdimm mod is to find the FET leg reading Vdimm and then do a connectivity test between that leg and the capacitor legs that are on the back of the board nearest the other components in the Vdimm circuit. It may be very obvious which capacitor is the correct one if traces are easily seen and followed, but the connectivity test is the fastest and safest way to find it.

Once you are sure which capacitor is in the same circuit as the FET, then connect a wire from the 3.3v solder point and that capacitor leg.

Actually I haven´t tried it. I´ve been meaning to but been so busy last couple of weeks.

I´ve been planning to do the vdimm mod with a 580kohm trimmer so the max vdimm would be about 2.9-3V. I figured out that these EB´s are not gonna work great with that much (3.3V) vdimm 24/7...

The layout of the K8NS pro is identical to the K8N pro.. The Mod I did is the same as the Pic above..

This I did with my Pc3500EB at 3.8V.. Psu I used was an OCZ Powerstream 420W and that is how I got 3.8V :D

having some minor stability problems which may indicate VTT might not be tracking. I will light the system off sometime and see what the VTT voltage is reading..

vtt tracks fine with the 3.3v rail pumped straight to the dimm slots. the older way to mod the board required you to mod both the vdimm and vtt. this newer version owns :D

here is my Mod on the K8NS pro.. As you can see it looks identical to the K8N Pro..

3.3v is the least amount of voltage you can use. anything higher requires your psu to be modded.

What I ment was that your Vdimm is locked to the 3.3V rail... and the Vdimm BIOS Options don't work anymore...
But 3.3V is a little high for my memory right now... both won't run with that high voltage....Kingston BGA DDR400 and A-DATA Vitesta DDR500...

Is thare any way to up the vdimm without locking it to 3.3v What pot would you use if you can?

Without a pic of the top of the board, I have no idea if Vdimm can be done a different way...although I am betting it can be as there is a regulator somewhere.

Value of the VR depends on several factors and type of mod done.

Post a pic of the top of the board please.

I don't have a digital camera, but i did find this mod of the k8n pro which is the same layout. Im not sure what Pot is there on either mod though. any ideas? hope this pic uploads

I don´t know what are the places where you have to solder. But I do know that with 560 kOhm you get ~2.9Vdimm and with a 680 KOhm you get ~3.0V... I have to ask Augu cause he knows...

where did you get those numbers from? is there a way of working it out? in this pic you can see the resistor to solder to and the other solder point is just a ground. I would like to max it out at about 3.3v but have everything else below.

Is it possible to use a VR, if so which?

So if I've got this right, all I have to do is solder a wire as shown on the pic, back on my K8NS nonpro to "lock" the 3.3V rail?

this is my 2nd vdimm mod

I did the 3.3 to vdimm mod on my k8ns nonpro.

One of my friends has a k8ns pro and i joined the 2nd 3.3v pin on the back of his mobo to the vdimm cap. After which his pc wouldn't post. It would turn on and then off within another second, even before the boot screen would show up.

Has anyone done the vdimm mod the k8ns pro. I would really like to see this mod done on his board. Seeing as we have similar cpus ram and boards. + he has 2 2x256mb kits of BH-5 that are good for 240 2-2-2-5.

Another one my mates can't get is OCZ DDR booster to work in his k8nsxp

All three boards are s754 btw.

I find it extremely ironic that both of their boards don't like vdimm mods and are targeted at overclockers and mine took it like a :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: and has worked fine since day one :)

edit btw removing the wire fixed the problem and seeing as it posted and turned off im assuming over current protection or over voltage protection.

No this exact mod will not work but a very similar one will.

I have modded a K8NS (nonpro) and it worked 100% fine. You just need to make sure that your vdimm is set to +.2 in the bios all the time

Does this bypass the onboard memory controler or is it still possible to toast it with the mod? And whats the max Vcore on this board?

Max vcore is 1.7 so its also gonna need a voltmod if you are using anything better than air cooling.

There rae two capasitors in parrellel behind the vdimm regulator, you just join the 3.3v rail to the +ve leg of either cap.

Just make sure its the 3.3v rail and also make sure its the +ve leg :)

The 3.3v = Vdimm does bypass the Vdimm controller on the motherboard....and thats the case for any platform (Intel, AMD, A64). And by bypass I mean that it forces the voltage high, but the controller is still in the loop. This will generally also force Vtt high in most newer boards.

What voltage does the IN cpu memory controller get?

how is this board? is it better than the dfi, cause its a lot cheaper. one thing i didnt like was the way the legacy connections are on the mobo and the new stuff is on headers

The Vtt I was referring to has to remain at 1/2 of Vdimm output...so doing the 3.3v = Vdimm should automatically force Vbt/Vtt to track at 1/2 properly. On most boards.

i have this mod on my NF7-S and it tracks :D

For the life of me I can't get the mod for the K8NS Pro to work. I have it looking exactly like the pics (K8N Pro pics), but nothing. My computer still boots fine, but my max fsb is stuck at around 219 for my BH-5s. It's like the vmod isn't even there. The only little difference I noticed is that in BIOS under PC Health status, it shows the DDR25V as 'Fail'. But I think it should be like that considering. Any suggestions? Type of wiring? BIOS options? This is only my second Vmod ever, so I may have missed a step.

umm arround those speeds i need to set the ldt multiplier to 3x :) (which is good right upto 290 or something btw ;p )

also make sure you set your vdimm to the max setting in thebios ie +0.2V or whatever it is.

Also make sure that the BH-5 are compatible and capable to overclock at 1T with that mobo ;)

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it past 219 fsb on my memory. I've been to get up to 340 HTT, it's just that the memory isn't getting the volts. My RAM has reached 260 MHz 1:1 when I use the OCZ booster. Unfortunately, the booster only works for Super PI calculations at these speeds, and my RAM won't go past 219 MHz at any voltage for 3D benches. I'll have to check with my multimeter to see the actual voltages. Does anybody know where the contact points are to read VDIMM?

Edit: Sorry for the noobish type question, but how do you change the 1T/2T setting in BIOS? I've tried with the A64 tweaker, but it wouldn't enable 2T.

Bios, ctrl+F1, advanced settings ;), there you can adjust timings and all. Down the tab you'll see xxxxx something - 2T, it has Auto / Disable / Enable, set to disable and then u're on with 1T.

Thanks again for the help everyone, I finally got the mod working! It turns out that for some strange reason, the vmod didn't effect DIMM 1 and 2, but worked for slot 3. At first, it wouldn't post at all when the memory stick was in slot 3, no beeps or anything. Then I remember seeing someone say that his wouldn't post higher than 3.1V with the mod. So I just set the powerstream 3.3V pot lower, and now it works! I just had to crank it up some more when it was in windows to get it over 3.1V. super-pi stable: 250fsb @ 2-2-2-5 1:1 @ 3.4V so far. :)

Edit: It seems to boot at over 3.1 V every time now.
