My friends, it seems I drew the short straw.

As some of you know I've been pretty sick the past 2 months,
The Dr's were all thinking the heart as I had 3 heart attacks on July 17, 2013
At first the symptoms made me agree with them but very quickly I started thinking this is something else.
After 6 weeks of testing on the heart every which way you can and nothing I sort of lost my temper last week on Monday am and
went on a rant at my primary care physician and told her in words of one syllable that before they found out what was wrong I'd be dead.
That motivated her to order like 40 different blood tests and we found out what the problem is.
It looks like advanced prostrate cancer that has moved into the bones.
My PSA was at 400 ( 2-3 is normal) and also factors in the blood that only come from bone or liver cancer.
This explains many things as this is something that's probably been going on in me for years.
I'd just thought at first that the lack of energy was a normal part of aging as lets face it, at 62 I don't expect to feel as I did at 35.
Now the good part is the specialist who seems like a true professional.
I was in to see him today for a biopsy and meet with the oncology people Wednesday.
It is what it is and my head is ok. Life is a journey with no guarantees on it's length..

Now the two things that have helped me deal with this are my friends and family and last, a project to work on in my spare time.
I have the first and I believe only SuperMicro X10DAX dual socket 2011 V3 motherboard with the top pair of 18 core E5-2699 V3 chips in it.
This board is able to be overclocked with BCLK and also memory timings, vcore and vdimm voltage adjustments,
It took me a solid week to get it running as I was just too weak to stand and set it up but for the last week plus it's been running.
Normally I would have been tweaking and testing but again, no energy to do that so I set it at a simple 104BCLK and let it run on WCG
Dear Lord is it a monster. Stable with load temps in the 58-61C range and the computational power is just plain scary.
My dual 10 core IB system(3047MHz) does app 160,000 PPD in WCG.
This at 140MHz less speed(2905Mhz) does app 350,000PPD
After a full week on WCG it is the top daily producer and is even beating a 8 socket 64 core/128 thread X7550 Enterprise class machine
that has to be well over $30,000.00 just in parts alone.
The Dr tells me the first thing he wants to do is boost my energy levels and then I plan to see exactly what is in this beast as I know I haven't come near the limits yet.

The last thing I'd like to say here is that the people I have met here have been the best group that I've ever met.
So many close friends from all over the world that it is humbling at times.

There's nothing I can say that doesn't sound trite, so I'll just say that I'm truly sorry to read this and am glad to be able to call you a friend.

Oh sh_t! I'm very sorry to hear that Dave :( Things like that make me always scare.
Important is that you don't loose the faith and will. Try to think about positive things and always look forward.
If you're going to start therapy it will be a very though experience and sometimes you'll feel totally beaten and down. Don't loose the faith! Also think about alternative methods (either to support the therapy or target the entire cancer), I have read about lots of methods (and also some of my family members tried them - i.e. linseed oil, various diets, HIGH vitamin C doses, etc), but I don't feel enough skilled to suggest the best alternate methods.

Well done on losing your rag. Just what the doctor didn't order. Now the treatment can begin, leading to recovery. Three work colleagues had treatment for bowel, bladder & prostrate cancer recently & are in remission, working just like they did before. While avoiding getting cancer seems to be no further forward, treatment has improved immensely. There are some things I have always admired and agreed with you on Dave. Inclusion, tolerance and "move on" or "let it go". Of course your appreciation and tolerance of my jokes has always been appreciated. And of course our shared dedication to WCG. I have said before this team is what it is and the members are who they are because of you. The way you have moderated the forums and mediated peace has been masterful. I respect you and appreciate everything you have achieved here. You sir are a gentleman and a good man with a good heart. I hate you and your mom are going through so much. I know you will remain strong because that is who you are.

Having my mom die from colon cancer and then reading your story, a whole host of feelings flood forth. I cant even imagine your struggle.

Do what the doctors tell you to the T. Eat super healthy. Depression is cancers friend so stay positive or fake it to yourself. Surround yourself with positive people. Do what makes you happy even if that means playing with computer parts all night. If you need someone to vent to, id be more than happy to give you my cell number as im sure any of these other guys would also.

Good luck and we are pulling for you.

With todays medicine Dave has a good chance to stay topside for many more hours.

Even with it being news like that at least you know what's up and now can do something about it.

Dave I'm very sad to hear this awful news but there are many new and advanced treatments these days. A strong and positive attitude can go a long way in the supporting the healing process. To quote Jimmy V, don't ever give up.
I'm astounded that it took the doctors so long to diagnose the real problem. I have a complete physical every year and complete blood work including a PSA test is standard. To be honest this sounds like negligence/incompetence by the doctor. PSA testing should be done on every male over 50 as part of any PM healthcare.
I know I'm far away but if there is anything I can do to help just ask. I will add your name to our group prayer list.

nanoprobe - There is rising question as to the effectiveness of PSA testing... my opinion on the matter is that it is because the testing methodology is flawed if there are as many false positives being produced as is claimed.

Anyways, that aside.. fight hard Dave, think and be healthy! I've been reading some promising material on binding colloidal particles to cancer cells to allow targeting them easier, maybe something to look into.

Sorry to hear about your prostate cancer diagnosis, MM. But at least now you know what to fight. That's got to be a relief in and of itself.

I will just echo previous people and say that the best thing you can do is maintain a positive attitude. It's worked for my aunt, who has been in remission for 12 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago.Its aso worked for my mother, who has been in remission for almost 2.5 years now.

Please keep fighting! You were one of the reasons I ended up joining the team, as well as starting my dualie obsession.

Just came back from the "Meet and greet" with the Oncology Dr.
He impressed me, he listened and when I told him how weak I've been prescribed a mild steroid. He said that should help in that area

In the United States where I practice, there remains a difference of opinion between various groups. On one side the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer. This recommendation was based on two large trials. On the other side the American Urology Association differs and believes that the USPSTF interpretation of the data is flawed and the fact that another landmark study was not included is relevant. I have been monitoring PSAs routinely for the past 13 years and am confident that I have positively impacted a number of individuals by doing so. At the very least, I think that primary care physicians should at least have a discussion with patients and let them be an active participant in their health care. The information is not harmful, it is what is potentially done with that information that is relevant. And we have specialists in order to help people deal with that information.

Hey movieman, I just checked in after a long time to see what's going on and then I read this. Terrible news.

I honestly admire your attitude towards this, and wish you nothing but the best. You will be in the thoughts of people all over the world.

When talking to someone that we know has a chronic life-threatening disease, most of us avoid talking about the issue for fear of upsetting the sufferer, either by reminding them of their condition or by saying the wrong thing. By starting this thread, you've got us over the first hurdle, and I hope that neither I or anyone slse says something that upsets you - well, not much, anyway.

Prostate cancer runs in my Dad's side of the family, so I've learnt a bit about it. It's also the cancer that affects or has affected more people I know than has any other cancer. 4 of them including my "baby" 61-yo brother, have had RP surgery. 3 of those are clear of the cancer, tho at about 1 year later for 2 of them it's a bit soon to tell. The cancer came back in the 4th guy but he's still alive after about 10 years, tho he's had a rough time at various stages. And I know 2 others who were diagnosed too late for surgery. They're both still going some years later. They've been very sick sometimes, but have had good periods too. Bottom line is that with therapeutic intervention it's usually a slow-growing cancer, so you should be around to see that beastie machine you've built climb up through the crunching rankings.

I've had a rough year healthwise over the last 12 months too. Someone informed me that "65 is the age when the warranty on your body runs out" (I'm 66 now). You've still got a few years to run on yours, young fella, so you might try getting an RMA from your makers if they're still in business. Some people keep things to themselves but I've always believed in 'get it out" and say what you feel.
This situation sucks but it is what it is.
I'm doing what I can do, seeing the Dr's I'm supposed to and so far they all seem excellent and caring people.
The pain is the biggest issue. Haven't slept more than 2.5 hours in weeks except for one night.
The drugs are another concern as I never took any pills my whole life and I mean none.
They also vary. Woke up at 3:30am today and right knee was killing me, pills didn't help and that was 2 vicoden and a steroid pill.
Hot bath, big bowl of cheerios to take my mind off the pain and that helped a bit.
Last, the friendships and comments help more than you know.
More Dr's visits later this am.
This has become my new life.. Dr, follow-up, Dr, follow-up, rinse and repeat! :D

Hope you don't mind me asking, but have your doctors verified that the f*cking stupid cancer has already found its way to your bones ?

Dave, there are no words that can express how sorry I am to hear this kind of news. What really sucks is the doctors did not catch this earlier. But it is what it is. Have known many folks to kick cancers ass. I know you have to testicle fortitude to do more than kick its ass, but send it far away. With today's technology, your chances are very strong to beat it. The road will be all up hill, rough, full of pot holes but we know your determination can do it. You have many friends here that are willing to help. Don't hesitate to make that call for help. I have no problem making that drive as am sure others will too. JUST ASK! Good luck at the doctor's office today. Keep us updated. WE are here to help.

Today met with the cardiologist and the financial person from the hospital;
Heart is the same, ok, and getting help from the hospital's private fund for the costs.
HUGE money involved here and I already have over $250,000.00 before this deal from the heart last year.

It has been a long time since I checked in on XS, and to read this news and to know that my good friend Dave has gone to the Crunching Team in the Sky, truly saddens my heart. I was known by many here years back as phelan1777.

Movieman, aka Dave and I talked many times over PM and via phone. Though I never met the man in person, I once asked his advice as I was dealing with a relationship issue. His advice which I remember many years later. 'You can go out for a burger one, or stay home and have steak every night'.

He, in many ways was a father figure to many here being much younger at the time, less experienced in overclocking, computers, and life in general.

I resigned up here to see if I could get a hold of him only to find out he passed away.

I did not have much of a father figure nor did I seek such in him, but mentor of sorts he became.

He always had a sense of humor in our conversations yet a conviction that caught my ADD attention.

While I was not as close as many here, to him, he left a lasting impression on me and my perspective on life and relationships (friends and otherwise)

Xtremesystems was home for me for a long time, (2006/7ish to 2009/2010?) taught me much of what I know about cooling, overclocking, computers and net community. None knew me outside of my posts here aside from Dave, but when I was active here I was dealing with personal issues that I did know realize were due to factors before I joined the site. (Car accident.)

When I would act stupid, Dave would PM and try to guide me or offer advice. I didn't realize at the time, he meant well and I guess maybe saw something in me that I was unable to then. I can say similar things about only a few that I have met in my life to this point. (40 something ish old)

If admin boot me again, (yes, I know forum policy), I understand. I just had to say my piece on a great man.

HOWDY!! 123bob checking into this thread. Yes, it has been sometime. I still recognize some of the names. For those I don't know, hello, you are on a very good team with a noble and worthwhile mission. I can personally attest to the effectiveness our work has brought directly to the area of chemo for cancer.

I also think of Dave every time I boot the main rig I still use today. It has the dual Xeons that came from "somewhere" and are still running on the Supermicro board Dave recommended... This thing has been bulletproof.

I was also one of the survivors of Dave's phone calls.:rofl: Man, that dude could talk. But it was all good, and we got to know each other very well even though we were at opposite ends of the country. (I'm still in the Pac NW.)

I hope this post finds all of you doing well. I had a few life crisis's to deal with, gradually lost a bunch of my farm rigs, fell in the standings, but I think that will be changing soon. I have found the Q6600 farm to be largely obsolete after my foray into the i7 stuff. I have not kept up to date on the latest, best performing crunching farm rigs, but I know I can find out with a couple of searches here.

One fun thing that brings me back here is that my Daughter recently moved back in with me and brought "modern" computer gaming with her. I am floored by how much that has evolved since the days when I played the original Doom game back in about '92. It was the start of my addiction to FPS games, led to a bout of Civ, Civ2, Call of duty, Battlefield, etc, etc. She and I played COD against each other over my home network somewhere around 15 years ago. She regularly kicked my butt just using the "melee" tactic. Quite embarrassing for an ex-military dude to be slaughtered by a half pint...:shrug: So I am on the forum looking for build advice on a gaming machine. Mind you, I'm not asking here, there are other parts of the forum for that.

I am glad to see that my login still works. I had bought into what should have been a lifetime membership, some years ago, when the site owner had trouble funding it. (Fuggar?) Still good, and I have no idea who owns the site now. I am very pleased to see it is still here. I still remember how impossible I thought it would be to catch DDTung (Victor) in the standings, but a number of us did it.
