Guys, it's been maybe 1-2 years since Sierra_Bound retired and moved to Chile.
It is time to elect a new team Capt.
Three names have come up for consideration:
Stoneageman
Old_Chap
OJ101
All three are excellent choices IMHO
Are there other names that should be included?
What do you guys think?
Toss all three names in a hat and choose one? :D

Timely Suggestion & nominees MM. Have you checked with your nominees to confirm that they where truly interested in becoming our new XS WCG Team Captain?
We indeed need to rejuvinate our leadership to find a new XS Team Captain that can guide us in increasing our active XS WCG membership to boost the XS WCG Team productivity and its appeal to Worldwide crunchers. This will require much time and dedication from whoever takes over the XS team captaincy fron Sierra_Bound.
Can we possibly formalize the nomination process and have the candidates post their future vision and plans for our XS Team so that members can make an informed choice. We could also name one scrutener to whom XS members could PM their vote selection for the XS Captaincy. He would tabulate the votes and declare the winner.
It is imperative for our XS WCG Team long term survival that we boost our corporate image to enlist new members. Judiciously electing our new XS Team Captain is an very important first step.
For the sake of transparency, I am currently the XS team captain at GPUgrid :D
Hello PG your response was enjoyable but predictable. I am a relatively new member of the XS WCG Team, Oct 2012, that would like to see it grow and expand so has to maximize our contribution to WCG research.
Our new XS WCG captain should be carefully choosen not only on past achievements but also on his vision and plans for our team's future. Our new captain needs to have time to dedicate to the captaincy task and a willingness to ruffle feathers to change our corporate image to make it acceptable to all people, regardless of nationality, religion or sexual preference. The young boy pushing the cart, shown in the second picture you posted above, should be able to visit our forum without any fear of encountering inappropriate postings.
Right now our XS WCG Team is an old boys team that has a wealth of knowledge but unfortunately tolerates inappropriate postings to some of its threads. If we wish to remain as such we can maintain a status quo. If we want the XS WCG Team to expand and prosper we need to carefully elect our new team captain and plot our future course.
I have a couple of comments:
I am perfectly willing to give it my best but I am entering (starting tomorrow) a period of uncertainty on the work front. I may not be clear on the outcome for some months.
I therefore wonder if, with this distraction, I can be the person that some might wish for in a Captain.
I am less than convinced that me and a pink tutu is a good thing for the team too ;)

Anyway, yes this team is home to a bunch of friends. Good old boys I guess. Something MM has rightly always stressed is being friends and having fun. Yes sometimes things go a little further than they should. But I do not know of too many instances where MMs mom or one of the few girls here who posted here a time or two ever were made to feel uncomfortable. But that someone might have been offended by something posted at some time or another is a given. I do not like some of the political postings in the funny thread. But I am a big boy and allow for others freedom to post. While MM has called me out once or twice for getting carried away with my jokes, and rightly so, no one else has ever complained.
As captain my motto would be: "Ask not what your captain can do for the team, ask what the team can do for your captain" :hehe:
Some time back I PMed MM about needing a new team captain. Three days ago Otis11 and exchanged PMs about the team and the lack of activity and the slide in participation. That is when Otis11 started a few threads to get people posting. I had tried and failed. Otis suggested I post Milestones and welcomed new members. I have started monitoring the stats page and will post events.
The reason, I think, that things have slacked off are several. One we are coming off the summer season. Most of us cannot do as much in the summer due to heat. Second many went to Ripple Labs and may not have come back. We have not had a giveaway, challenge or Supercomputer Week for some time. There is also the inevitable attrition of peoples lives and priorities changing.
My concerns are that the relationships that have been built here over the years, sharing laughs, life problems, illness and good events and happenings continues. XS-WCG was at the top of the game, I would like to see us get there again. And as many know I am big on WCG projects and want to always get new people interested.
My vision of who would join us is mostly PC people, geeks, nerds, tech enthusiasts and those who are looking for a way to do something good for the sake of mankind. Maybe I am wrong but I do not see soccer moms, young kids or your grandmother getting involved in a distributed computing project team. They may run Boinc on their PC at the behest of others but not big on team activity.
The only complaints I have ever received for my postings were public, so no need to list them. Twice IIRC. I have never received a PM saying anything negative about my jokes. If I had I would have apologized and removed what was found offensive out of respect to that individual. But I'll tell you something. There is something on the internet to offend EVERYONE. If you are going to be offended I would suggest staying off the internet or only visit corporate web sites. Getting a sense of humor and allowing others the same freedom of opinion and expression that you want also go a long way in not being so bothered when you are offended.
Whatever you guys want for a team is fine with me. Personally I say f**k corporate. I worked in corporate america for years and know it well. You can have it. :down:

I'm with PG on this one, I'm not keen on the idea of corporate. I want a fun team here with my friends and family - yes, I consider most of you to be extended family even if you have a thing for pink tutus ;) I feel that at any time I can turn to any of you for help and that any of you can turn to me for help. I've experienced both here, you guys know who you are. I'd like to keep the close-knit vibe. I have nothing against having new members join, au contaire I would love it! I was once new here and was made to feel welcome from the get go. What I would like to see is new members joining the family and not just being another number in the corporate world so to speak.
I too think that one of the reasons of a decreased score is the summer. I for example am utilizing (since ~May) only ~6 cores out of ~50 I have. But temps are going down recently, so I hope to resume soon.
The other factor I believe was HCC1 on GPUs in the past, where people earned lots of points and this has brought more folks to the team. Remember our scores and position then? ;) With the end of HCC1, lots of folks were hoping for another such run, but they lost illusions after months passing and still no other WCG GPU project in sight. After experiencing the power of GPU computing and WCG still relying on CPUs, I believe this has eventually caused a shift to other projects.
I too said said to myself a few times why to bother with CPU computing if there's so much more that can be done with a single GPU... And still waiting for a new WCG GPU project...
I have always felt acceptance here. A 63 year old disabled UNIX geek with a rowdy sense of humor. Trust me I have not felt that acceptance too many other times in my life. I cannot think of a time anyone was rejected by the people here.Quote:

A big reason XS-WCG became the powerhouse team it was was mainly due to MM. He made the team what it was. What the team is now are the people who found a home here. We need a captain that has the time and energy to drive the team back to where it was without changing the formula that kept so many of us here.
That there should some kind of strategy is surely no bad thing but some balance between "corporate" and "hare krishna" is more likely to be seen as the acceptable way here even though pg still has the saffron robes
Being old and semi-senile I reread my posts in the hope they might make sense. In looking over this thread I could see where someone might get the impression I am campaigning for the position. I am not. Like MM I do not have the energy most days to do what needs to be done. My goal is simply to keep this team alive and growing doing what I can when I can.
I think the three candidates MM listed are three good choices. I cannot think of anyone else to add to the list. All three have what I consider the most important qualifications. Dedication to team and WCG, consistently participate in forums, helping others as they are able and their conduct is MM approved. The same question gets asked over and over. We answer each time. Many personalities and temperaments require some tolerance. All three have been Friendly, tolerant and patient.:up:

I'd like to address this quickly - as a programmer who has worked coding both CPU, Mutli-core CPU and GPUs (Both OpenCL and CUDA) - While the GPUs may have more brute force power, CPUs and GPUs are not in the same league. It's like comparing water falls (CPU - limited number but incredible amount of force) and a summer shower (GPU - Overall more water, but lots of little drops. Take a lot of effort to get useful work out of it). Your CPU can do calculations that may not be feasible on GPUs any time in the near future, but the work that can be done on GPUs can be done incredibly fast...Quote:

The welcome thread needs to be started by someone who's seen as a regular/important to newcomers (Preferably the Team Captain) - either through having lots of points, lots of posts, or both. Makes them feel recognized by someone important. The Daily Numbers/Pie can easily be delegated to helpers.
This will take a lot of time, but this was my recipe for GPUGrid way back when, and within 6 months or so we doubled the size of our team. Most people don't need the encouragement and recognition, but getting it is likely to help them stick around through the harder times, make them feel more at home/make more friends here, and even push a little harder to give it more as "I gotta catch Sparky!" Or "PG is gaining on me!" (The first was my motto for a good year and a half, the second, sadly never happened as I never caught PG either... but that's OT)
Sadly I don't think I personally have the time to do it, but I'd be happy to help out and cover the person doing it a few days/month if needed
I would also suggest that we revisit this at regular intervals (say every year?) That way someone can step up for now without feeling obligated to do it for eternity. That said, if the team captain is fulfilling their role and wants to continue, I say let'um! Also wouldn't be opposed to having a captain, with a "second in command" to help make sure things don't fall through the cracks.
That said - I'd ask who's interested in being considered? Are all 3 of you up for it? Is there anyone else we missed? I'm going to PM people before I start spouting any names or suggesting things. Feel free to PM me too!
And do we want to do names in Hats, Votes, what? I'm happy to do the tallying if you want an unbiased 3rd party...

I would add that the team captain does not need to do all those things just make sure they happen. Delegating to volunteers seems fine to me. Why would you think anyone would join a team with cobwebs on the forum?
What I don't want to happen here is what happened to my old, first DC home of F@H. It got real slow and then one day... gone.
At the same time I've not had the time like I used to have, plus having to pay for all my utilities now along with other costs I'm not as ready to run a bunch of powerful boxes like I once was. I just couldn't afford it. I still run it, but just on reduced hardware count to keep costs a bit lower. The summer is definitely a double whammy on that front.
There is a 'magic bullet' for increasing membership. It's called a financial incentive. Ripple labs, RSC & Easynews have used it to good effect. Perhaps we should create our own XScoin :rolleyes:
However, the most successful team on Boinc as a whole is Sicituradastra which does not offer financial incentives. They started around 2006 & by 2012 were #1 team overall (currently #2) XS=17th. So how did they do it?

Looking at the title of this thread you can maybe see why I have considered disqualifying myself just in case the worst happens.... I find it a tough call.
The more I look into it the less I think we need one "Leader" to do everything and the more I think we need one or two people to pester everyone into being active in the forum... I mean just look at how much life this forum has taken on in the past 3 days!
Still a long way to go, but it's night and day compared to what it was! (There might have been more posts in the last 72 hours than the previous 3 weeks...)
So, thought about this quite a bit, and here's what I've come up with:
Team Captain - Someone VERY stable, and VERY PC (The whole, above reproach speech...) Main responsibility is articulating the vision of XS and guiding the group in that direction. (Plus making sure everything runs smoothly...)
Member retention specialist - Someone willing to pester the crap out of people when they don't hang around much or contribute. Simply ask for 1 post in WCG section and 1 WU per week minimum (Sound do-able to everyone? Just something so you don't forget XS is here...). Regular recognition for milestones (Even yearly anniversaries of joining maybe?)
New member Welcome/Recruiting Head - Starting personal new-member thread, finding ideas for recruiting people to the team (or helping brainstorm/implement ideas at least - remember, the idea is quality people, not quantity.)
Special Events Coordinator - SC week, give-aways, any new ideas... (Might be better for the TC to control this and allocate on a case by case basis?)
What do y'all think? Good basis to work off of or is there a better idea completely? Separate Special Events Coordinator or is that intruding on TC duties?

While unreasonably low demands also unfair. We have forum members who do not put points up for this team but who are our friends and make contributions such as helping people with PC and Boinc problems. I doubt seriously too many people would get much help without them the way things have been for some time. I posted a thread about a new PC build and got ZERO comments on liquid cooling or what WCG points I might get. Seriously? No opinions on Liquid cooling? No one ever used a AMD FX for WCG? No. No one cares to take the time to respond anymore. When I post an article on Cancer research or one of the WCG projects there is 3-4 people that might acknowledge the post. Very seldom does anyone else. Even if you do not read it you can say thanks. It shows others there is interest and response to postings.Quote:

You can do whatever you guys want. But I do not think we need a bunch of rules, laws or commandments. We need people to care and then ACT on it.
We have a great bunch of people here, we need to let people see that. And I believe if we do the numbers will grow.

I agree with PG, having been in change of large groups of volunteers before (which is more or less what we have here) pestering the crap out of people will most of the time not achieve what you want or worse the very opposite. Everyone in here is a Member retention specialist, its called engaging with each other. I know VB has a thank you system in it at this point, maybe Fugger can turn it on in this forum as test to see how it we use it? I myself hesitate to mention it because it takes away some of the real interaction between people that should be occurring. Maybe we have turned into Facebook zombies? since there is no one click way to engage someone we move on not doing anything. :shrug:
I believe a Team Captain and Co-Captain or 2 should be all we need... and the rest is really on the group as a whole.
I know for myself when life gets rough/busy I withdraw because honestly most people don't want to hear how badly your are doing for days/weeks/years. I would like to believe this group is different then that. I'm doing my best to remember that and force myself to engage because if I can help one person feel better that day that does wonderful things for me.

Sorry PG I saw your post about the FX, and I did run an 8320 for a while, but I didn't pay too much attention to its output nor its power usage as it was a work PC for a long time and I haven't had it for a few months now... I didn't have much to offer there.

I always look at the forum listing to see how many Viewers WCG is getting. It amazes me how high that number often is. Twice today I saw it at or near 40. While alot of them are visitors that is a lot of traffic to show what this community is about. Fast cars, hot chicks and cold beer! No wait that's another one. Sparky ain't wrong about the Folding@home team. It's gone. No forum due to no activity. It was once a good size team, active forums and put up some good numbers. Slowly died up to a point and then it died almost over nite. Gone.

Part of me wants to sell off just about everything to then fund a total new build. My PC has been using the same case, with the same basic water cooling setup (aside from a couple block changes) since 2007, with just a few incremental upgrades over the years. Something totally different would be fun.
But then, my PC does everything I want it to, and the other reason that I'm not as active as I used to be is my car is the big money-sucking hobby these days, and likely will be for the next few years.
Yeah, I didn't mean that requested minimum as a requirement... simply a request so that people stay active. (I know for me personally, if I get on just once a week I'll end up getting on most days, but it's also fairly easy for me to get caught up with life and ignore the forum completely - like what's happened for the last 2 years... when life gets busy/hard, I tend to buckle down and work until things get fixed and forget about the little things.) And I didn't say the WU had to be for team XS! Just meant to encourage people to keep boinc on at least 1 computer or phone, no matter how rarely it's used...
That said, y'all are right, it's probably not necessary, or even beneficial.

I love to laugh. Best stress and depression reliever I have found. Usually stuff pops in my head at Robin WIlliams speed at George Carlin sarcasm level. It's ALL for a laugh. And I love it the most when someone says "Thanks I needed that" or "OMG I almost peed my pants". I know from life long experience that not everyone understand or appreciates my sense of humor but I get too much out of it and there are people who do enjoy. I think it is great if I can give someone a little relief from the stress of daily life or the depression of feeling crushed by life. And these forums do have an ignore function. It is dangerous. I REALLY do not want to hurt someone feelings. But it is almost impossible these days to say anything without offending someone. Whatever. Be offended. Or get a sense of humor. Personally I think we should draw a name. No one has voiced any objections to the candidates and I agree with MM on the voting.
If MMs mom is agreeable and feeling up to it maybe she draw the winning name? She has done that in the past for us. If not then MM? Or MM could assign it to someone.
Is there anything else to discuss? Should we get this done and move on?
If you do not think this team is in decline or forget what we once did take a gander of the last year numbers for the team.

The more I think about this the more I feel it is a job for someone younger than I.
happy to support, help out or otherwise generally be of use to the "Captain" but truth be told I have too many things going on/changing in my life just now to be able to fully commit.

2. Melde dich in unserem Forum an und schreibe in diesem Thread (wird noch erstellt) = message in our forum and write in that thread (to be created)
3. Benutze den Thread im WCG-Forum (wird noch erstellt) = Use the thread in the WCG forum (to be created)
Our new captain will have to contact WCG admins to start the process of changing captain officially, so he can get the authority to enter us in these competitions etc. Could take some time.
@OC - I like that, November is always a good month for supercomputer week (as per my rather outdated avatar and signature :p:)
@sam - done, I've emailed support@worldcommunitygrid.org and submitted a support ticket explaining the situation

I am up for the birthday challenge. In years past I have donated my crunching cores to a smaller team in need, but if XS is going to do the challenge, I will surely support the team.
