Glad I stuck with 1440p surround.
I can't imagine double the vertical lines & being able to read them on the same screen (or squinting hard & trying harder). Save for photo & possibly video editing, driving this thing in games is beyond the reach of quad Titan Blacks, huh?
$2500 isn't terrible, at least. Should have been 32" or 36", imho.
I think 4K would look nice on a 50" tv, but I agree for a monitor 1440p is enough for me. I actually keep one 1080p monitor around just for email purposes because I don't like having to squint at my text.Quote:

I don't have any first hand experience with 4k, but I adore the idea of leaving "FullHD" for something more crisp, but ffs guys, display manufacturers needs to get their priories straight. Now that we have a "new" and very nice resolution on our horizon we need DECENT PANELS, sort that out, THEN increase resolution. Not the other way around...

4k does not work well on current and doubtfully on next generation tech. Unless of course you run Sli/CF or drop the settings far down, bit pricey though? And surely I cannot be alone in enjoying stable 60fps<?

1080p still is the "standard", and the most popular resolution in the world, on most platforms.
According to Steam statistics, it's the most abundant amongst gamers as well.

Time will tell how fast 4k catches on, Steam statistics will keep an eye on that. But I am sure you can consider it popular/normal within two years time.

Well, it's not that I don't need max settings, it's simply happens to be a decent trade with frame rate and graphic quality, without having to spend an arm and a leg. And to be fair, two 780Sli@4k while mostly achieving 60fps< would probably put you very close to "low" in the graphics settings, and while the aliasing properties would be excellent @4k, it's not going to "look as good"; figuratively speaking of course.

Talk about upcoming video cards all you want, smooth gaming at high settings on 4k or 5k is still a pipedream for the majority of enthusiasts never mind gamers in general. The video card performance is just not really there yet unless you spend a ludicrous amount of money and are willing to spend that amount every GPU refresh to keep up with more demanding, newer titles. And there's not that many people willing to throw that sort of money at gaming.
In a few years when 4k displays are cheaper and you maybe don't need 2+ highest end cards to get a playable experience then maybe 4k will catch on with enough gamers then. Until then 4k gaming is going to be a very niche thing.

Decent projectors are really expensive btw, although they do drop look a stone in value... luckily. But you really need a "batcave" to grasp the experience and not to mention the "worry" with the lamp.
You can get hold of some nackered second-hand ones, but you better be able to use a soldering iron:

So the new iMac has a better display than this, 5k SST display and a full PC for $2499. This is just the display, worse than the one in the iMac (MST) and costs the same at $2499...nice

You can kinda fix it by setting up the 200% dpi size thing, but some things don't scale right.
For example, the selection mouse cursor, is like an inch big on my 27in screen, it's double the size of the text lmao.

In batman, in the bench, I'm hitting 57fps on my 680 on 4k, all maxed except no aa.
Definitely needs 2x the power of a 680.
I need to get my 2nd card in, I need resistors, maybe next month.
5k would quite an awkward res to use though.

Considering Apple and the applications on it support OpenCL, the new m295x is rather good. It's just behind the GTX 780 Ti in OpenCL, and significantly better than the GTX 780m they were using. It's a pity AMD are still behind the curve on Mobile GPUs though. Many would have preferred an NVIDIA GTX 980m, but it seems Apple has a supply contract with AMD now. One thing that's interesting is that the m295x is nearly twice as fast as the GTX 780m in Tomb Raider that uses OpenGL 4.0 in OS X, while only 9fps faster in Diablo 3 that uses OpenGL 3.2
In Cinebench this iMac gets 105fps, which is very very good for a mobile GPU, especially compared to his Mac Pro with FirePro D500's, and even full desktop NVIDIA cards.

For work I would get the upgraded 5K iMac over the Base Mac Pro with either D300 or D500 GPUs anyway, unless you specifically use Final Cut Pro X which'll use any and all OpenCL GPUs.
Considering the 5K display is an SST and it being possible IGZO ( TFT Oxide ), with the system thrown in, it's extremely price competitive compared to the Dell 5K MST display.
Personally I see 5K as awkward to use as 1440p, as it's quad 1440p. Just like 4K/UHD is quad 1080p.

This said, im happy to see Apple make good use of OpenCL and OpenGL, with OpenGL next it will be only better... but lets be honest i use 2x 7970 on a 1440p monitor, and this is cleary allready limited at this resolution, in some situation, i see clearly i need to upgrage now . the Tonga based mobile gpu is somewhat 1x 7970 performance wise..
Now, my system who is under H20 and well overclocked with a good 6cores cpu, i got nearly 10Tflops of SP and 2.5Tflops DP, who is not bad at all compared to the actual offers .... ( W9100 = 5.4Tflops SP / 2.7Tflops DP , Nvidia Is way under even on SP with "only" 5.2TTflops SP in the 980 )
