To add I killed one at 1.47 real voltage was apita with black screens and under cold,it was sucky even on the modded Asus or stock Sapphire bios.
soooooo how you guys doing?

Man I love you guys :) you keep the extreme in Xtreme.
Guys I need some help identifying a performance problem. I am on my 6th video card 290x , out of first five only one was able to go to 1300 core on LN2 also it did 1290 on cold water weird it clocks almost the same in LN2 and water. I juts received video card number 6 yesterday and I quickly mounted an EK full cover water block. ASIC 76.9 , Elpida Memory , flash PT3 Bios and away I go testing this new one. The card runs at 1345Mhz core 1670Mhz memory on water , just plain water not cold or chilled , at 1.387v in Asus GPU Tweak in DMM 1.43v real. No mods yet. The card scales very well with voltage , and max temperatures while running heaven is 42c core , vrm 1 is 34c and vrm 2 is 36c. Temperatures are great , here comes the but ? but the card does not score properly , it seems to score lower than my other cards on heaven and Fire Strike extreme , my question is what could it be video card has throttle during the benchmark ? Video card needs subzero to score correctly ? Drivers ? I was watching heaven run for hours last night at 180 FPS , average was 174 FPS , it dips in the tessellation test to 165 FPS. But score is abysmal and way off. That was with a 4770K at 4.8Ghz on water , max score I got was 4456 , I had scored 4682 before with another card same cpu clocks and same OS , same drivers , card was at 1290/1581 , so 300 Points difference. I tried lower voltages , lower core clocks ( 1250 ) , lower memory clocks ( 1500 ) and it scored 4384. To end the story short , I am lost why this new card can run so easily at 1345/1670Mhz on water with no mods yet , but it scores very bad. Any idea or hint what could it be ? Any guidance , help , opinion or idea are welcome. * The new card black screen always during any bench but very little maybe 1 or 2 seconds then signal will be back and always finish the benchmark *
2 dead benching under LN2 ( Toasted VRM due to too much v.core ), 1 dead testing volt mods ( Toasted memory vrm due to too much volts ) and 1 just plainly Black screen whenever enter any 3D and it was RMAd. I am still buying/selling/killing and binning 290x cards for LN2 benching , there ae some Golden cards out there , just need patience and Luck to find it. Now , can you help me or have some idea why this card is scoring lower even if I it runs at high clocks ??? Thank you :).
tried a different bios on it?
Can we zombie the burnt ones? I have a class 3 solder certification and I solder on aircraft parts for a living. If we can get the usable dead parts to me with zombie boards and a clear idea of what to do, I would be more than willing to use my skills to help.
Heres my 3dmark 11 so far

Thank you for trying to help me Ace123 , apretiate it.
Finally I have an answer after many many long hours testing and re-testing my 290x with every driver available and 3 different OS w7 installations , card has not been volt moded yet. The problem is related to the video card throttling down during heaven , it does it 1340/1677Mhz stable and pass heaven DX11 extreme on water full cover EK H2O block , but the card starts throttling at test #11 once it gets warmed up the clocks goes up and down as well as the FPS ,performance take a nose dive due to the v.core set at 1.43v real via DMM reading , water cannot handle that much heat , LN2 required for stability. Big Thank You to Crustytheclown for all the help. I guess finally I found a Golden card , I am happy as a dog with 2 tails :D. next will be full volt mods and LN2 to make it scream.
Here is a short video I made of a complete run of heaven at 1340/1677Mhz on ambient temps H2O, I selected and only showed the last 2 test #25 and #26 because heaven last almost 5 minutes to run lol , the fps starts very strong from test 1 all the way until test 10 fps are 186 max , average 182 ,then it takes a big performance hit after test 11 once the card is warm game over :/. darn it took my 6 cards to find a golden one. watch the short video and the FPS. Check it out to see what I am talking about. id you are having the same problems as I did , there is your answer.

higher clock ( on anything ) + lower scores = instability. it's really that simple i'm afraid. i hope i'm wrong, though chipsy.
Dude you are absolutely right and not wrong :) , the problem is the card needs subzero cooling to be stable at those clocks 1340/1677Mhz at 1.43v , too much to handle for H2O cooling too many volts needed for that speed , hence why lower scores = instability is correct. No worries , I will do all the volt mods to the card this weekend and next week I plan to run it on LN2 , hopefully it can do at least 1400/1750Mhz at 1.46v and -100c
do these have coldbug? i theorize u can get close to 1500. cold changes everything. now to just get some LHE :p. happy benching man!
You really have to have rtss open while you test chispy that's what its there for bro.
nemo
1500?? I don't know that's wishful thinking nemo 1350 -1400 is a very good card anything over that is pretty damn good.
ace I hear no you can not zombie theses cards but they are trying... to use the ass ends should be ok but sadly that's what goes on them
Where theres a will, theres a way. The factory VRMs get the power in there. Unless theres a component on the board that is being damaged also as a result and it has not been found.
chispy: what is maximum for this card without trotling at h20? Did you tested limit for best score? The card seems really nice :cat:
On H2O without throttling max is 1280/1600Mhz and that's at 1.39v real read thru DMM directly from the card it score in line with my others 290X. After that speed the card required ridiculous amount of volts to be stable , hence only subzero benching can handle that heat. I just finished doing all the volt mods , most likely this week it will go subzero to find out the absolutely max limit. Will keep you guys updated.
Are you hard modding beyond the bios that was posted? Pics?
Hi guys, I need some guide for oc my card which I did put under H90. Where should I start and what would be safe for me to oc card and leave it for 24h use like gaming, rendering and stuff.
Really have to see for yourself but about 1050-1100 stock voltage might be ok I can game at 1200 in cf with added voltage on my cards
Throttled some I forget to set the power limit

I watched your video and I face with the same problem : by using Displayport, the display becomes black randomly when I apply about 1.35 V with ASUS GPU Tweak or +160mV with Sapphire Trixx. On the other hand, with DVI, instead of black screens, the display flickers, becomes blurred randomly. I must diconnect the DVI cable to have a crisp image.
I am watercooled : the GPU does not exceed 45?C and the VRM1, 60?C. Your conclusion is the heat too high for watercooling.
I am not sure that it is the cause when I see our temperatures. Furtermore, I thought that the cause might be the RAM overheating but even at the beginning of benchs, when the RAM is cold, the problem appears. According to me, the causes may be either the VRM circuitry, not stable enough for high voltages. Or the GPU which does not like too high voltages. I tested on around 7 290/290X cards and every card encounters the same problem.
Hi guys, I did try oc my card under h90 and some heatsinks on vrm's and so far I can get:
Unigine
Heaven Benchmark v2.1
FPS:
72.9
Scores:
1835
Min FPS:
5.9
Max FPS:
167.1
with gpu @ 1100 and mem @ 1350.
in HWBOT-Unigine-Heaven-Benchmark-Application-1.0.3 i do have 3075 score with aboce settings.
Temps are on gpu max 51 and vrm 1 is 70 and vrm 2 is 58. As soon i give more than 1100 on gpu its starting to crash any benchamrk. I do use MSI Afterburner 2.3.1 with settings:
CV - 0
PL - 50
CC - 1100
MC - 1350
FS - 55%
How I can push it forward to don't dmg card? I'm noobie in oc r9 290x and would like to have some good oc for 24h use as i did put it on good cooling.
Pretty quiet thread considering the potential of these things, maybe everyone was waiting for non-ref to get the most out of them .... I was waiting for Lightning but I have given up so I might get a ref 290x with water block and have a go. What mods are you using for 1.36v?
Regarding black screens - I had two different 290x's do this, they would bench well but would black screen within a few minutes of starting BF4, they both went for RMA and I got a store credit for one, hence the wait for Lightning ...
:)
Well its the 290 overclocking thread and lets face it they don't overclock that well. :p:
Mine games np bf4 thuo never had any issues with that its was early drivers that were crap that were pissing me off but lately its been ok even with 2 and 3 cards
1200/1600 np few hours I played this was before the mantel driver I don't even have that driver installed I use 13.2 or 13.3

Good and cheap solution to noisy and hot stock cooler which should help with overclocking as well!
Hi,
quick little test of my cf 290x :

cards no flashed just used msi AB , no software can change the memory voltage without flash because it blocks at 1453Mhz on the 2 cards .
I get my MSI 290X Lightning here in the next hour or so - excited to see how far I can push it and how much eye candy I can have on BF4 @ 1440

Releasing the tool to do that would make the Titan to look even more ridiculous, however it would also hurt the FirePro sales...
Have you done any game performance tests? Used to be that changing a Radeon to a FirePro gave increases in a few places sometimes.
nice find hope that this will be released soon :-)
Hello, long time no see.
I have bought myself used R9 290 for 190? and I want to instal my universal EK water cooling on It. Everying is fine just one question: what is that and if I need to cool it?
http://shrani.si/f/3m/cI/1XLWLhao/290-13b.jpg
Flat metal packages are power mosfets for auxiliary power supply ('AUX voltage' in Afterburner). They are fine without direct cooling if ambient temps are low, but for safety I would put a small heatsink on them (at least the big ones).
