Hersounds, I knew you would be the first to slice off that IHS :)
Intel really went over board with the Paste and Black Silicone. Can't wait to see the new figures once you've cleaned that crap off and applied your latest Phobya Solution :D.
One small thing meaning to ask the line of very small transistors/caps which appear to the left of the first picture (on the CPU) are they important or can you scrape a few off?
So I guess the clamp and hammer method would work on Haswell too lol

@ Hersounds...I'm pretty sure it will be included, but I haven't see the retail board yet.
without IHS+ liquid pro combination woo expecting some good results.
Not really!,this is from a friend on facebook mine...
http://www.firegoon.com/u/f8xyz.jpg
as you see he need 1.16 vcore, and temps are not very well as all...with 3770k same speed need 1.12 vcore ( 3226B068 batch) and temps are more lower.
What cooler?
3770k with antec 620 dual fan...4770k similar stuff i don't remember right now
you should expect good results on temps but i dont dig that u wherent stable at 5Ghz or u cant boot and after delid YES u can, that was tried before on IVY and ur temps will be better yes at 30C less using liquid pro even me im stable at SAME volts after delid on IVY
u can see here
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...results/page29
Ppl at Overclock.net are talking painting the exposed metal next to the die with nail polish or mx-4 or gasket sealant prior to Liquid Metal as Liquid Metal is conductive.
if you go mx4 temps will drop 9C if you go liquid ultra u get 30C !!! u can put some silicone over the parts to protect that will do the job ;)
this one NOT the others

Cheers have fun !
Sergio
Use nail polish for that… It's far thiner and will protect the contacts, moreover if want to remove just throw some acetone at it and wipe it clean.
Do you guys use Coollaboratory Liquid Metal or Phobya? (the film or the paste)?
:)
Gotta admit that my urge to upgrade from i5-750 got the better of me, 4760k on the way... darn it.
Great to see some delidding action on the Haswell!
Did you have a chance to test your own yet Hersounds?
Anxious to see some Haswell delid results. :)
A little piece of this electrical tape would probably work fine.

First delidded i5-4670k result I've seen posted here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1397764/d...-4670k-results
Should get better when his Liquid Ultra arrives, it was done with PK-3.
Unfortunately only tested so far as of this post at 4.3ghz, not the 4.7-5.0ghz everyone's been waiting for...
Is it possible to reuse the Liquid Pro (e.g. take the IHS off and on again)?
I downloaded the Maximus VI Extreme manual but it makes no mention of it at all. I would think that they would at least mention it in the 'package contents' section. Is there any way to get this bracket separately? Heck, I would buy it off someone who doesn't want to delid their Haswell.
Popping lid off my 4670k (L311B424) and using Liquid pro on the cores dropped 10c. Did not take before pic but here is after pic.
http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/...dLiquidPro.png
Something's not right then if you only lost 10 degrees. I've done 4 Ivy Bridges and lost 20+ on all of them. Re-check your application for proper contact between the die and the IHS. It helps to paint the underside of the IHS with a light coat of LMU/LMP to help adhesion.
Yes you must have lost between 20 - 40 degrees...use liquid metal in 4 sides bro!...lapping Ihs and copper block
I did try to reapply the liquid pro on the core and the under side of the ihs and it did help a little but not much total drop is 12-15c closer to 12c. I don't seem to have great luck with cpus. Seems this cpu doesn't like anything over 4.5ghz. Trying for 4.6ghz and up to 1.4v and no go. not sure if dud cpu or uncore is holding it back or a voltage setting I am missing.
I removed the ihs on my 4770k today, and using the special skrews from EK to use the EK cpublock without the ihs:
The results where amazing.
Not much screens before, but I go from 82c to 56c with 1.42v
http://www.diskusjon.no/index.php?sh...ost&p=20632465
Is this what you used? It is designed for Ivy Bridge, but good to know that it also works with HW.
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=37453
So let me get this straight, you're putting liquid pro on the bare die, then putting the lid back on. What are you using to secure the lid and what grease? I don't think I'm going to be able to mount the swiftech to the bare die on the MSI board.
hey
when i get my 4770k 5 ghz on air 32m stable at 1.44v, then after one hour i have to give it 1.5v short time after it will not run 5 ghz on air at all, i remove the ihs and tryed mx2/4 still no go 5 ghz on air
I just delidded my 4670K and so far its about 10 degrees drop with crappy acrtic silver on the die, I dont even know where I can get Liquid Ultra from .... still looking.
What would be the next best TIM, and one that is prferably not electrically conductive?
That EK naked mount kit looks like the go, I might try that.
Also- my core voiltage on cpu-z doesnt show correctly, where do I get the correct version?
My Asus utility seems to be showing motherboard temp instead of cpu temp ... it says Im priming at 39 degrees .. I wish
:D
Edit : Putting AS5 onto the die made no difference in load temps at all, very disappointing. I will reapply when I get some better TIm, and I am going to order that EK naked kit.
:)
Thanks Olivon! That vid answers my question. However I think I'll use a brush to spread the TIM.
n00b question here: do liquid metal tim's drip off if motherboard is placed vertically (i.e.: inside a case)?
thanks for the video Olivon!
These Haswell temps are nuts... might have to de-lid my 4770K on the weekend.
Here's what its making now!!!! & sure I'll update if/when I de-lid

u delided ur chip ?
Before I go tearing into the cpu, what's the longevity of the liquid pro? Especially since putting it directly on the die is permanent. Is it going to start losing it's thermal transfer abilities after a few months?
Got this from anandtech forums who was just using a naked die and a water block. Apparently NT-H1 was the second best choice after liquid ultra but there was a concern about pump-out.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost...3&postcount=67
Heres nachtfalke using it http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post5194141
i went from 80C load to 63C load only using GC-EXTREME. cant wait for liquid pro to arrive
lost about 30c using liquid pro :)
using corsair H60

thats why you need to spread only a little dot on die, then spread it,if you use the proper amount should be ok.
nail polish :P. and yes its VERY necessary. liquid metal is very leaky and those resistors are tiny and right next to it.
here is some results at 5GHZ 4c 8t. Previously this cpu would not even get close to this and hit 90c, now its barely at 70c

so will delidding allow for higher clocks? I mean like right now I can boot at 47x on 1.30v rune cinebench and all is gravy. But will it allow me to boot into 48x 49x 50x? I guess what I'm trying to say is, if I can boot into 50x multi at 1.35v but isn't stable will delidding it give it a chance to be stable?
Isnt the VRM gonna be facing on the right/left side when the processor is installed on the socket?
Anybody got a clue as to what all the resistors do on the 4770K PCB?
I just broke one off rubbing my fingers over them whilst cleaning the PCB black stuff up!!!
Its the very bottom one in this picture
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m...770KDe-Lid.png
I quickly tested the chip in the board & it booted so I carried on & applied nail varnish to the resistors liquid ultra to the die & under side of IHS. I also glued the IHS back on with some black mastic.
The chip is now in a board & appears to be ok but I'd still like to work out what the resistor was for.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m...CAmbientLP.png
Did you have to delid to get 4.5Ghz stable?
It's probably a capacitor, not a resistor. Resistors usually have markings on top of them that display their resistive value, ceramic capacitor on the other hand rarely have markings on them.
Depending on the size it's either a 0402 or 0201, its hard to tell.
My guess is that these caps are used for some kind of decoupling.
0201 (0603 metric): 0.6 mm ? 0.3 mm
0402 (1005 metric): 1.0 mm ? 0.5 mm
I have doubts that you will be able to solder this component back on, so I would put efforts into testing the CPU's integrity through stress-test programs.
Yes I think you are right it would make more sense for it to have been a decoupling cap. I have access to a rework station & would have attempted to stick it back on should the chip have failed to post. I've tested everything everyway I can think of & everything looks to be working as it did before & better thanks to running cooler so looks like I got away with it.

Anyone know where I can get one of these, I want to delid but I want one of these first.
My cpu is good for 4.8 but man too hot when testing with p95 or anything AVX, gaming I see low 60's
Here is better pic......ask asus guru's.
Skilled machinist can do it.
Dont really need that bracket for delidded chip you can actually putting back the IHS without losing any degree vs naked die.
I meant temperature
with IHS = without IHS
But with pics circulating that means someone has already made it, does anyone know who made this?
Is this true? Have you tested both ways? I bought the naked mount kit from EK but if you are correct then it wasnt needed.
I have a question regarding degradation but Im going to start a seperate thread on it.
1x Liquid Pro = 6.64€
1x Liquid Ultra = 7.48€
Total: 19.58€ ( 27$ canadian shipped ).
:D
Guys, somebody measured the difference with and without IHS on the LN2?
pitch lost warranty, but nice resolut OC.
I got a 4770k that I have just delid
My CPU is very no spense
On MSi Mpower with noctua d14 it's very very hot, like 90? uneder Linx at stock frequency
I'm waiting for liquid pro+ mx4, in this moment it runs with noctua TIM between IHS band DIE
-10?, bug under Linx at stock frequency it's very hot, 80?
I hop e that liquid pro can give me another -20? ( for -30 in total), 70? at stock speed will ben always a lot but less that now
Very bad CPU I hop e that it's luky as voltage required
*edit* I misunderstood. I have only tested with delid and changed paste, not without IHS.
ON SS -55: Difference is close to 50 Mhz in heavy single thread loads, none in light load like 1M and I would guess >50 MHz in real heavy load like wprime.
before
http://hwbot.org/submission/2393293_
after delid w. ocz freeze on core and ceramique 2 on IHS

http://hwbot.org/submission/2398610_
http://hwbot.org/submission/2399533_?
Contact is very good with temp on single stage rising from -54 unloaded to -51 at the end of wprime1024M.
Here is one for you
my 1st haswell build 4770k
I am getting poor heat results all stock bios settings triple checked.....
tested with intel burn test which i have to stop short......
1st stock cooler 103c in less than 10 secs
2nd be quiet shadow pro sr1 up to 100c around 10 to 15 secs
3rd corsair h80i between 90c to 95c again around 10 to 15 secs
At the moment so i can work i am having to disable hyper threading and under volt the cpu to keep my temps down which is a joke ......
Surely this can not be right ...paying over ?270 for this from intel i feel some what ripped off
ta sy
^^^^ check the vcore in something like CPU-Z maybe stock/auto is pushing a lot of voltage. I would have thought 1.1 ~ 1.2v would have been more than enough for stock & should run well under the 100oC mark
Oh & a silly one..... I take it you have something between the IHS & cooler?
Thx for the response
yes @ stock default settings in bios ..that should set default setting volts for the cpu surly....well i would hope so.....will check when i am back with cpuz and post them here
re. paste i only have toothpaste at hand at the moment i ran out of mustard yesterday........:)
i have used mx4 ,ceramic & as5 same results but a little better with mx4 i assume no cure than the others....
I have just had a reply from the retailer's tech support and have told me not to use intel burn test eh?
so replied
So let me get this correct there are issues with intel burn test a program that intel have designed to test there own cpu's ????
come on.....
anyhow will test later and get back to you
ta sy
Right i have solved the problem
with intel burn test and aide64 i was getting upto over 100c and showing cpuz 1.22 volts max which is strange as it was not going that high before i defaulted the bios over 5 times to try and correct
so
I have now re flashed the bios and re set to default and this time i am back to normal voltage 1.05 v and with ht enabled and my temps are back below 75c so not sure what the problem was bad flash with the new bios who knows...so i am back on track now with my under volt project ...i am able to pull 4.3ghz all cores ht enabled @ 1.035v & 4.4ghz all cores ht enabled @ 1.039v still testing this...temps below 77c air
so anybody with gigabyte z87 d3hp board with heat issues then reflash your bios seems to have worked for me....
Ta sy
I have changed the noctua TIM with liquid pro between DIE and IHS. Now therefore my cpu has LQP between DIE and IHS and MX2 between IHS and cooler.
From stock temp drops by 25-28?C and maybe it will dicrease agin to few degrees (I saw LQP needs some hours to give best performances).
However, my CPU was very hot, under linx it got 90?C more or less, now it's under 65?C.
Here are my results for my maximum performance over clock on my 4770k before I delid it.
Powered by Intel's latest AVX2 linpack code.
Look at the Gflop performance and the heat.

This chip is worthy and ready for delidding.
Once you delid are you guys able to back down on the volts?
4.8 ghz/1.445V/2.0VCCIN/4.0Ring/1.2RingV. Undelided. Only ran Aida for 30 min on cpu test. Max core temps of 82C.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps887b06b5.png
No
No because undelided my cpu wasn't able to run under overclock, I think that it had a little gap between DIE and IHS, I got -30? after delid
I got out of The LID.

All razors. :)
So far everything is going well. Getting ready to mount.
