I think yes, now is good time for upgrade. FX will be more power hungry with high voltage (1.488-1.55V), but with some 1.45V you can get balanced system.

i intend upgrading my HTPC with the 1090T and am dreaming of a stable 5Ghz oc from the FX 8350 with my WC.ing setup for 24/7 use.

I'd like to see a frequency vs power graph for these CPUs on air. Buying one for everyday use is kinda pointless if I have to spend £100 on watercooling just to make it as fast in games as Thuban!

It's faster than Thuban in games,stock vs stock by around 20%. You can OC Thuban to ~4Ghz on good air cooling but since Thuban runs games at its half core Turbo of 3.7Ghz(most games are just not supporting more than 2 threads and Thuban runs at 3.7Ghz with 3 active threads) your OCing effect will not be that effective,maybe you will gain ~20% in games(NB OCing effect included on top of effective 10% cpu clock effect). This way you can match the stock 8350 according to CPU chart Hardware.fr got. But then you can OC Vishera from its 4/4.1Ghz stock clock to around ~4.7-4.8Ghz on air and jump ahead of OCed Thuban very easily...

That's good, I'm debating at the moment because I have a 770t motherboard which can't take an AM3+ CPU. I have a 955BE atm at 3.7GHz, mostly because I have a budget heatsink and also because it's a bad clocker (VID of 1.4V O_O) so it needs 1.41V for that, and 1.475V for 3.9GHz (which is just on the limit of my heatsink). I do have a lot of threaded applications though, and I like AMD. Wait for steamroller probably.

Yeah I think you are set with your 955BE,too much $ needed for upgrade now.

please can you keep us posted with the out come of your ocing, after you flash the bios(CH5)? what are your temps. like and have you tried getting a stable 5Ghz by increasing the cpu voltage.
Am curious becos. we have the same setup. ;)

Just out of curiosity, has anyone experimented with removing the HS on FX chips?

not worth. it may increase temp instead and crack the cpu. amd happen to build better cpu than intel in that regard Lol

I've also seen samples with 1.325v, 1.337v and as well as one more reported at ~1.36v.

Using the same settings with which I ran a 1hr. 4.7GHz Prime large fft test (~1.476v load)... I was able to complete Cinebench at 4.9GHz but not 5.0GHz. I'll probably switch to water cooling before pushing/testing higher.

Looks like the 8350 I just picked up about an hour ago is a keeper then. Mine is doing similar results but I'm using 32 gigs 1600 ram on a Biostar TA990FXE.
Voltages very similar to yours excepting this board has serious vdroop so I have to up the base voltage a bit more.

5.2 under load for 5100 Flanker. I think I'm close to max for this setup. My ram is bleh for benching and this board is vdrooping pretty hard.

Im back with my Cinebenchs, I found maximum for CPU load and over 5200 MHz was hard time...one run OK, second crash or bluscreen etc...

I tried quickly validation with all cores, high CPUNB and high memory and some device in IO :)...SO over 5400 MHz :). I think, I could get with 2 cores and tweaking about 5450-5500 MHz.

Pulled the trigger on an 8350 yesterday, Frys had it in stock and was selling at msrp. Even after tax it was cheaper than newegg. Stock VID on mine is 1.38, needs 1.475 for 4.8Ghz.

StinkEye: The VID on mine is a little lower (1.3625), but 1.45-1.48v and 4.7-4.9Ghz seems to be the sweet spot for retail chips on ambient cooling...
The higher VID on yours may actually offer a little more headroom should you decide to go cold!
If you'll notice though, there's a decent performance boost (due to IPC) and better power consumption.

Thank you, it's definitely fun. I have it on custom watercooling with it's own 360 rad loop, so heat doesn't seem to be a problem. It doesn't feel like it is on the ragged edge like the 8120 did when pushed to 4.8, overall I am pretty happy with it.

Nice results and chip Flank3r! The review sample which i got here is quite old (1224 PGN if I'm not mistaken) but atleast 5GHz it does easily.

Today is finally the right time to part II, test with AMD Vishera FX

INTRODUCTION
After a long time I finally got to the being playing with the new processor Vishera FX. Generally processor rather exceeded my expectations. His performance in practice is everywhere higher than the Zambezi FX and also improved the potential for clocking and of course due to the power consumption of the MHZ clock. I'm quite pleased with the power consumption after considerable overclocking, which is actually quite a bit lower.
Roughly speaking, the new FX processor at the same clock offers a 3-25% higher performance than the previous generation of FX processor. In the most common case, the differences of about 10-15%. That's not bad for a simply architecture refresh on the same production process. The processor has been in the eye only these tiny changes and I think that has been streamlined many processes (bugs removed) from the previous concept. Even this, however, counts, and so Vishera Bulldozer is already more capable the bulldozer to the masses.

Overclocking
Overclocking is a chapter that offers most of the articles also often differs term "stability" as well as the methodology of determining stability. The alpha and omega of AMD processor temperature. Still I have to repeat over and over and temperature, temperature, temperature. If we follow Coretemp, FX cores temperature should not exceed the long term value of 70 ? C (this is in reality the CPU still around 85!). The following, however, we keep the temperature the better. Example. The default settings and low overclocking we can afford to keep the temperature and 70C will see without instability. But if we on the maximum of the CPU clock, there us already this temperature can limit. 4.9 GHz and a temperature of 70 C does not bode well for a while everything will be okay, gradually we will see probably error. However, if at the same clock and voltage reaches a temperature knock to 60 C, I'm sure that the processor will be fully stable. It must be really good cooling - high quality cooler with pushl-pull fan (the bigger the flow, the better) and sprite or mainstream allinone like Corsair H70 etc.
Because of this I got to the beautiful 5010 MHz! It could indeed take over, and 4950 MHz to put the clock tuning, where temperatures are not as much of a problem. It is a higher average, but on the internet I've seen a few better.

The overclocking is also related small chapter I love above all, and the maximum overclock for benchmarks. Here I got an additional 200 MHz up Cinebench I even went through with efforts to 5240 MHz! Below is a short video jerky quality (probably nerves as I was tight :)) and below some pictures.

Undervolting at stock clocks
Not as we see chapter of undervolting. And with the attendant decrease in consumption. For many, it is more interesting than the actual overclocking. The lower voltage consumption is obviously reduced and thus the load is often a multi-threaded processor 4100 MHz frequency.

And how everything is reflected in consumption? Meant, what is the consumption in the base, and when overclockingor undervolting ground state? Well.

Among states in idled are not significant differences. Approximately 3W savings even worth mentioning. Basically, the entire assembly during exercise tells about 232 W. After overclocking over the 5 GHz consumption increased, but the processor is not as uncomfortable hungry as FX Zambezi. Consumption grew by "only" 83W! This is about more than 70W less than the FX-8150 at a frequency of about 4880 MHz with the same line-up! If the processor to operate default values ​​of frequencies, we are able to save with undervolting decent 36W. With longer tweaking of CPU voltage VDD and CPUNB would be still some Watts knocked down. All, of course, also depends on the length of the processor.

Crosshair combo with Vishera FX-8300 can be recommended to all fans who are looking for maximum platform at AMD. The board will delight stability, widgets (fastboot, diretckey, post display, etc.), software, build quality and components fitted, fully digital cascade (DRAM and CPU), processor FX-8350 offers very good indeed multithreaded performance and respectable single thread, finally overcomes him with confidence Phenom II (mainly in practical use and gaming). no, I wrote about it...Max stable is 5 GHz, 5240 MHz is only benchable for some benchmarks, validation up to 5500 MHz

it not helping much...But we will see, stil I have it at benchtable with MX4, next weekend I will change chip to my workstation with liquid ultra :)

My second FX-8350 is really awesome! 1.565V in BIOS, 1.35V CPU/NB, I tried quickly validation and I was shocked:thumb:... The best FX I ever seen. Cooling is only AMD liquid cooler, so nothing special.

I got more with the same voltage (5734 MHz, but validation was wrong :( ). This chip could be interesting with LN2 :)

Yesterday me with friend frozed my first Vishera chip (validation "only" 5510 MHz with 1.575V) with LN2...Looks not bad :)... Playing Quake III more than one hour with 6 GHz for people and max. clock was finally broked :)

If I remember right, we got about 8100 MHz with this voltage. After Christmas I take some time for LN2 and I tried the best what I could do :-).

The best, what I and froxic can save with core 0/1 was this. We got over 8000 MHz with core 2+3 (something about 8040-8050), but we have only photo...

Now my FX-8320. I tested with the same settings as both FX-8350s. First, I finding validation only with 1.565V. I tried cores 0-1, 2-3 etc. The best looking at this FX-8320 0+1 and 5+6.

Near 5500 MHz, is it about 100 MHz worse than FX-8350-1 (LN2 8GHz+) and 200 MHz worse than FX-8350-2

Quick question my set up same as your but cinebench 11.5 is showing 4C/8T instead of 8C/8T. Got mine stable @ 5ghz with 1.48v watercool.

Yes, Finally I got some record after long time :)...I tried the worse from my 2 FX-8350s for LN2, but both are good with air/liquid cooling. This one can get 5600 MHz with 1.565V for validation and about 5 GHz full stability. Second one is in safe for some time...But its devil... 5750 MHz 1.565V. It could be better than this one "record holder" FX. So, what is now Czech+SK record in frequency? There is it!

I love Vishera :)...,next chip looks similar as my second chip for validation. There is a bit higher result, but I used here more voltage than at my second chip...But this chip is good with all cores. I was suprised :) So, lets go!
