Anyone getting ready for SC week? I'm ready to power up the farm again and I'm hoping to get both Arima beasts online this time :up:
Overall, we are currently in 4th behind team Sony and they are only putting out 16.5 million WCG/day. I'm hoping we can put them on notice and pass 'em up!

I'm getting a HD 7870 to maybe pick up some beta HCC GPU work.
Should work out so that I'm ready and just about perfect timing for SC Week.
Just imagine if HCC GPU goes into production before SC week :shocked: Could we hit 50m/day?
I don't see why not if the points ratio stays the same. I get 32 boinc points per WU completed on a 2600k @ 4.5ghz. During the beta, GPU WUs are taking 2.25 minutes to complete on a radeon 7850. That is 640 WUs in one day or 20.5k boinc point (143500WCG)if you get 32 boinc points per WU. Given the GPU power that is not being used, I think we could easily exceed 50 million a day (WCG points) on a non-SC week. Honestly, I'd be more worried about WCG running out of GPU WUs :D.Quote:

I'm in for SC week, as late in November as possible would be best due to temps here.
I'll do my best to dig up something more to run but I can't guarantee anything. I don't have much hardware left that's worth anything other than what I run already.

To be honest it's more the electric bill that will stop me than the actual system cost.
That's the part I fear the most as well. If not for that I could throw a fair number of cores at the issue.

I had my eye on all the boxes that were recently replaced at work...only core2 duo's and only stock but there were 150 of them..... alas I now have a tear in that eye as they were returned to HQ

It breaks my heart: my contract ends at 31st October and I am not sure about machines I am leaving at the Uni :(

My SC week plans include getting any machines I can together.
new plans: get a motherboard and some AMD gpu to go with my i3-2100/ram/case/psu, plus convert ALL gpus in my sig rigs to WCG HCC GPU!

thanks. I would probably go for a standard ATX board... 2-3 gpus with at least double or triple space if possible.
updated plans: switch over my 5x GTX 660 Ti cards, 2x GTX 470 cards, and 1x GTX 650 to WCG HCC. Also I will have another GTX 650 Ti by then as well. And I will move the AMD 7850 to one of the i5 quad cores so I can run 3 tasks at a time.
Depending on the money situation:
Buy a used quad core system
Or
Buy at least one HD7770 or HD6870, move the HD6670 to the Dell i5 and put the Seasonic 650W PSU I was saving for a new build into the Dell.
Or
Find someone who has computers on XS and donate some $$ for their rigs electricity
I assume that MM will send an email this week to all members and to make it easier for them to participate I suggest preparing NEW STICKY for new-comers. Stickies that we have may be a little "intimidating" with 200-300 pages. Also, no secret that GPU crunching is best thing since sliced bread so maybe quick guide with screen-shots to help the transition.
I guess that 50M is more than possible with all GPU power that XS members have.

Don't forget that GPUs are not the best thing for EVERY kind of problem and they do have some weaknesses regarding heat and duty cycle that we are so used to dealing with on CPUs that we forget about them. Tesla cards, which are dedicated GPU compute cards (not high end graphics cards like one idiot tried to claim), are built to run at full load for extended periods without cooking themselves while consumer graphics cards aren't expected to be run nearly as hard let alone 24/7. Taking a few simple steps to keep temperatures low sounds so obvious that nobody is mentioning just how hot GPUs can get without a little thought. The fact that there is only one science app at WCG running on GPU is a good indication that not ever project is suitable for GPU implementation, either. Some will benefit greatly, others not so much. There could even be some that just can't be run on a GPU at all due to a lack of functions in the hardware.
There is whole bunch of people out there running running bitcoin, f@h or boinc project on gpu for years and I think they can handle one week of WCG :)
Those are people who are already familiar with GPU crunching. I'm trying to get the point across that this isn't points for free. There is always a price to pay somewhere. If you're aware and understand the risks and requirements then it's all good, but this isn't for everyone.
... and things like these should be clearly stated in a guide for new-comers :up:

On a side note, where the bleep are the tock chips??? I've been dreaming of an 8 core since before Ivy. :( Is trn on hiatus or just building a gpu farm? :rofl: Sorry. I have some catching up to do. ;)

If anyone has any video cards that are capable of crunching but aren't I'd be open to borrowing them for the SC week and returning them afterwards. I can't afford new H/W right now.
Added a 7950, a 7850 and got my existing 7850 and GTX670 crunching plus bringing my entire farm back online.
I will keep it all running as long as I can.

quick update on hardware available to loan out to a good home: I have an i3-3220 cpu and an i3-2100 cpu I would gladly send to someone who could run it for the week! Also possibly a GTX 650 that won't have a home. Let me know if you would like to run any of them for the week and I can send them out ASAP. I also have 1 stick of 8GB DDR3 if that would help anybody get a system running for the week.
I have a free PCI-e slot on my cruncher.
My dual optee has two free PCI-e slot's but I would need more PSU for it.
Got 2x 7970's already crunching.. adding 2 more this week for sure and maybe a 3rd too :)
i might be able to get my hands on a couple of fire pro w8000 and w9000 cards .. fingers crossed for those .
Need to setup a machine or 2 for my other cards .. thinking ill put 2x 6970's and a 5970 on my sr-2 and 2x 5870's on my 2600k machine ..

I haven't found much information about the W series firepro cards , id love to see what they can do as far as DP compute is concerned . Should be pretty similar to the 79xx series cards hopefully. Fingers crossed !

Just thought I'd post this concern of mine here...
I have a couple people that would like to contribute for SCW, but don't want to go about setting up an account for themselves and setting up for all GPU. In other words, it is going to easier for me just to install BOINC and then use my weak key and app_info file to get them up running for SCW on my account.
So with that said, it may be wise to make sure you have GPU work set to run for your "default" account so when you add or people jump on your account, they can run GPU work right away and you won't have to worry about managing device profiles for new devices being added.
Just a thought :)
Another thought - has anyone warned the techs at WCG that this is coming up? It might be nice to let them know rather than just having their feeders suddenly run dry and validators choked to death.

I just purchased a MSI Twin Frozr III 7950. It should be here by Thursday, and Friday at the latest. That paired with my 570 should give me some decent points for SCW.

Hopefully you can get those before SCW starts. What frequency are you running the 980x at?
The 980X is at 4.2ghz, anything above that starts requiring large bumps in voltage to maintain 24/7. The new 7950's are going in a SR-2 though.
I love leaving the crunching game for like less than 6 months, come back everyones scores have doubled, but mine.. stupid video cards..
with the amount of points people can add withone little card, makes me not even feel bad about leaving my Sammy turned off and in my closet all week..
Tell me about it, I'm getting ready to sell a lot of things and just have a dedicated server board with multuple gfx cards and a gaming rig. Multiple machines spread around the house seems like a waste now.
