Was wondering what do you guys think is faster. A prescott @ 3.8Ghz on air or an AMD64 @ 2.4Ghz. Would love to see a review with a 9800XT. I am only interested in air cooling. By faster I mean everything....gaming, video conv., superpi, 3dmark...etc Any opinions? Looking for a STABLE oc on air and had 2.8Ghz Prescott or AMD64 3000+ on my mind. Thanks in advance.
Why stop at 3.8Ghz?
The real question should be, both processors taken to their max on air. Why run them any slower, right?
So, say a 4.2E vs A64 2.4-2.5? Assuming both have something from Thermalright.
Not sure, we haven't seen any direct comparisons yet. It may be close depending on the benchmark.
It is kinda odd that FUGGERs prescott @ 4Gs only cranked 22K :(
Considering 3.2c + 9800 Pro scores about 19.5k stock, it looks about right to me, though we don't have a direct compare at the same clocks from C vs E yet.Quote:

I think the main thing you guys are missing out on is the new support features in prescott, many of the programs aren't optimized for the prescott to take advantage of.
i.e. SSE3
Pretty much tho I think Prescott will pave way for better intel processor, until then my A64 sticks since I'm a gamer and I love to OC :D
Personally I think that Pentium have a major advantage when it comes to overclocking in that you don't have to volt-mod your motherboard for very high. I just got an A64 and I've already hit it's limit because of a 1.7V VCore so I'm forced to mod. However with my Pentium4 2.4C I just cranked the sucker up to 3.6 Ghz with no mods and plenty voltages left.
Even so I'm sure the A64 will still give the P4 a run for its money even at those clocks.
Yes, SSE3 will be an interesting thing to see, as it has instructions to help in many different areas, including video encoding, and gaming.
I think the Prescott will do just fine in 3DM01 though, better than most people are expecting.
It all depends on where the top end is for the Prescott. Let FUGGER/MACCI or someone put one under -110C and see what happens. Things will start happening REALLLL fast at 5G

No what he was stating was that the Prescotts run remarkably hotter than the Northwood's at default clocks. I was hearing around 60-70C on stock cooling.
Those are some crazy temps for that core to throw off!
that's the stepping 1 early cpu's....the latest retail ones are MUCH better!!

i dont think any of the two will be faster in everything, gaming video encoding office photoshop etc...
will be a close match i guess, the performence diference wont be very big... if you have a prescott capable board go for it, if not check prices and wait for a review or some scores from people who oc their prescotts :)

Just saying that for convential AIR coolers it will run simply too hot for them to OC it much.

Fugger has stated that the current stepping is better heatwise. I think his article on the front page of XS said 39c with a lapped heatspreader, under what I would assume to be the stock heatsink.

There was a 4.2G CPU-Z shot over at VR-Zone but it didn't represent a stable clock speed.
Yup, SP-94 + Tornado should be good cooling for this, 39c sounds pretty cool...my 1700+ DLT3C is running 42-45ish right now ... of course P4s are fine running 50+ even

Somehow i can't imagine this prescott scoring more than 25k @ 4.2Ghz and heavily clocked Raddy XT.

Just to echo what quad said and add my :2cents: if the performance becomes less apparent at higher clocks what is 4.2GHz other than a higher number. :confused:
The vr-zone overclock keeps up the great tradition of them getting a good overclock, both on video and cpu's. I am not sure if this is just down to luck, the air quality in Singapore ( and lack of chewing gum ) or simply soemthing else.
Negating this it seems to be similar to NW in overclocking.
I am still looking forward to very cold testing though, especially if this possible non linear increase with core clocks happens. It was mentioned a 4.5GHz Prescott being similar on superpi to a 4.8GHz Northwood, and this sounds in the ball park what you would expect if it is true.
As they are a lot cheaper than the P4 3.2/3.4 EE, then hopefully we will have a lot more people with extreme cooling giving them a go and therefore more chance of getting one of those 90th percentile chips that do really well in the right hands -- rather than just sitting in an office doing spreadsheets.

Well, people are saying SSE3 isn't worth buying into now as there is nothing with SSE3 optimizations, then can't the same thing be said for 64bit processing? A64 shouldn't be worth buying right now if you're looking for 64bit apps, cause I mean, socket 939 will be out and whatnot. ;)

the only reason Prescott scales a bit better is cache. It has double the cache of NW. Compare prescott to an EE and performance will scale slightly worse. Cache is the answer to everything. The prescott benefitted Intel more than gamers. P4E is 90nm which means more yields per wafer which is more profit for intel. That means intel can sell it cheaper than northwood. Intel is simply streamlining the manufacturing process to cut costs and expenses, and to make more Pentium4s with greater effeciency. P4E(prescott) has 1mb L2 cache which equals A64 so that will make it competitive marketing. The prescott was targeted for big PC manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Gateway, Sony, e-machines, and compaq. Sure the Prescott is slower for gaming than A64, but in this industry, to survive as a business. Gaming is the last in priority. Look at what happened to 3dfx.

BTW Why categorize overclockers with gamers? People use computers to other things too.. Gamers usally and in general do not know much at all about computers or hardware. But they will buy what they think will get them highest fps in CS :rolleyes:

im not too sure about if prescotts oc very high in a prommie... prescotts are only 5°C warmer than nws on air, this doesnt sound like much but prescotts actually produce quite a nice amount of heat wich will make prescotts run a lot warmer in a prommie than nws.

Thank you for everyone's responses. The reason why I included the original values was for REALISTIC comparison. I don't care that one of my cousin's friend's brother is running his Prescott @ 4.2 Ghz air cooled or Athlon64 @ 2.5. The values of the A64 seem realistic to me because my friend has one and I kind of got an idea what it can do stable on air cooling (and stable is not one crash every couple of hours) What I care about is when I go and buy the chip, mobo, ram, I would be able to replicate the same overclock on all of the systems I put together (hence what most would get ocing a particular setup). So as it stands, taking the cpu debate aside, who do you think would take these categories assuming a Prescott 2.8 @ 3.8Ghz and AMD64 3000+ @ 2.4hz (1:1, no video oc, air cooling, best memory available for both)?

lets see.... Intel had something like 9 billion revenue last quarter, and i believe 2.2 billion net profit.
Any idea how many chips that are...? 99% of them will never run past its stock speed...a big portion are server and mobile chips too...even if you count only desktop chips...its a very very small impact on Intel's total :)
This is an estimated guess but i dont think "we" account for more than 1%

well for a comparison my 3400+ does 20717 on stock w/ 9800 xt gpu stock.
i am at a disadvantage atm..cant overclock at all. i have superior cooling (mk2 but i cant oc) its winter here and my room is overheated. the apt management has the heaters on like crazy and its hot enough to grow palm trees. prommy powers up but shuts off due to high ambient temp. running stock is my only option til it gets warmer outside and the heaters shut off.
Mach II is designed to handle up to +30C ambient... i cant imagine its running thÃ:banana:t hot... could you tell me any specific fault codes you get, if any? (possibly through PM as to stay on tpic here)

no it's not a bug. btw, MS just released XP-64Bit for download. Also VIA has 4in1 64Bit drivers including sound/raid/SATA. Promise has RAID drivers available to download.

isnt comparing processors in 3dmrk03 kind of pointless? As far as sales percentages go, dont forget that intels processors are only like 60% of their sales.. if that. They are actually the leading gpu manufacturer(followed by ati then nvidia), nearly as many chipsets are made by them as processors (since every processor needs a chipset of course, and a very small percentage are made by sis and other 3rd parties) not to mention their broad line of networking equipment, handheld products, software, and memory. I would say people such as macci and fugger and other front page regulars, even stretching as far as anyone with a prommy, while probably put the most income per capita towards intel products (that choose to) of any of their customers, they are a nearly incalculably small percentage of intels total income. Enthusiasts or overclockers as far as what they spend on processors, are no more than 3-4% of intels total income. We are no more than a grain of salt on a very, very large beach.

If you use their seperate "CPU Score" you'll find its pretty accurate.
And in that particular bench, FX-51 / 3.4 - 3.2EE / 3400+...etc actually works as advertised.
But none of our overclockers care to bench it. I'm sure if one did it might start the ball rolling, so to speak. ;)

That's awesome Quad! I'm downloading win xp 64-bit as i type. Just curious though, at what settings was that screen shot taken at? ie. fsb, mult, divs, timings, etc.
10x230 2-2-2-6-11-16 air cooled 24/7 settings. 3200+ / Asus K8V Deluxe, Corsair XMS3500 BH-5 2x256MB in slot 1 and 2.

Now what you need to do is run an actual Divx encode, show us your results, and have someone else run the same file on a Northwood/Prescott to compare, just to have a 2nd proof and not just PCMark.

I gotta question about S939. 939 will be both Athlon 64 and Athlon FX right? xcept the only difference between the 2 is the Athlon 64 will be based on the newcastle 512k cache and the FX will stay at 1mb? basically the 939 supports 2 styles of chips? :confused:

940 will be opteron-only (high end), 939 will basically be the fx line because it'll all be dual channel w/ 1mb l2, and 754 will stay at 512k L2 with newcastle core and be lower end. Thats how I heard it anyway.

A64 and AFX will BOTH use S939 and will both use dual channel memory. The difference will be cache... A64 will have 512K, only FX will have 1 meg
and the FX will cost like 700 so ill have to get the plain janer :mad: I hope not though ;)
Lets face it, considering only 5% of Computer sales are determined by Gaming/Overclocking Intel is not going to really lose out by AMD taking are larger place in that market. With the major sellers like Dell etc, almost every PC has and will continue to have a Pentium CPU. While every one baggs Intel in this forum, there out making ALOT more $$$$ than AMD. Like what Kanavit said, most consumers dont know the difference between a AMD and a P4. GHz sells.

With the major sellers like Dell etc, almost every PC has and will continue to have a Pentium CPU. While every one baggs Intel in this forum, there out making ALOT more $$$$ than AMD. Like what Kanavit said, most consumers dont know the difference between a AMD and a P4. GHz sells.

The actual sales in overclocking is probably extremely minimal.
However the enthusiast market has a pretty loud voice...when we like something, sooner or later some noobish computer user will pick something up like AMD good or bad etc... it does influence the general feeling of what is a good or bad CPU up to a point

If my mom ask me what CPU to buy, I'll suggest Intel. Less hassle.
ummm....... less hassle? how so? u can get a xp2500 for lets say...90 bucks. Or u can get a Pentium4 1.8A for 120bucks? hmmm what would i choose........hmmmmmmm still dunno :confused: obviously the 2500 , its much much much much faster and cheaper, and i dont know of any AMD ive had that wasnt rock stable at stock speeds.

Please dont tell me u would tell ur mom to build a celeron over the 2500. it may be true it would serve ur mom fine, but the barton is much more future proof and stable
Intel has the market wrapped around its finger. When someone asks about Intel they go... OH 3.2 Ghz wow... They ask about AMD... 3200+... whats that mean... Oh it runs at 2.2 Ghz... Gees, the Intels faster lets buy iT! OR Dell sell Intel... They must the best.
Yes this is partly true, but if someone asks whats 3200 mean and they say that means it runs at 2.2ghz..... u sure thats all they would say? i think not.
